• Music server + Banshee

  I'm currently trying to figure out some kind of set-up for my music collection. The music collection is located on my "main PC" and I'm using Banshee to play/manage the music. Since I'm often at a different location where I use my laptop I have a FTP server running on my main PC, use curlftpfs to mount the music in /home/username/Music and sync the Banshee DB/configuration via Dropbox. The problem at the moment is that Banshee skips songs very often when the connection is a little slower. I've been looking at some servers like Ampache but they are not really an option since they don't let me use Banshee (which means I have no ability to change metadata or rate songs). Syncing the whole collection to my laptop isn't an option either because of its size. It would be great if you had some ideas how to make my current set-up more reliable or maybe know an alternative.

• What do you do about content when someone asks you to build a website

  I am an experienced asp.net developer and asp.net mvc and I have my own CMS that I have written but starting to think there should be another approach. When someone asks you to develop them a website how do you develop it so that they can add pictures,slideshows, content, news items, diary events. On a side note do you give them a design for the home page and inner page and thats it. I'm just thinking if they turn around and say 6 months down the line I want a jquery slideshow on the right hand side of this page how do you or CMS's handle it?

• Microsoft Money alternative?

  I'm looking for something to replace my MS Money 2004 application. I've tried KMyMoney which seems pretty simple (that's good!) but it can't import the OFC files I get from my bank, so I would have to enter everything manually = not good. I've tried GnuCash which does import OFC files but I can't wrap my mind around this double-entry philosophy. It may be good for accounting but not for home use. I've tried to make MS Money run in Wine with some success but it was hard to make it work and I'd have to re-do that on my new machine. This is still a useful alternative for me though... Is there a similar tool that can import OFC files and that doesn't do double-entry accounting? Tax capability is not needed for me, I only do after-tax numbers. Some nice dashboard views (upcoming bills, future cash flow, total net worth) and some graphs would be a definite bonus!

• Repercussions to sharing .bashrc across machines with Dropbox?

  I work on a lot of different machines, all running Ubuntu (not always the same version). I have some really basic customizations to my prompt I would like to have available on all machines. I currently use Dropbox and store all my other "dot files" there, such as my .vim/ .vimrc .gitconfig .ackrc. I then just link them to my home folder from my Dropbox folder. Voilà, all machines in sync. I am unsure what the repercussions of doing something like this with my bashrc is. Can any one offer suggestions? Maybe an easy way to load a separate file in the bashrc?

• Copying and pasting files. Nothing new here

  I installed XBMC and it's working beautifully. I have my own skin I'd like to use and all I should have to do is copy and past my skin.folder into the addons folder and I'm down. However, this isn't so easy with Ubuntu. I have the latest version, installed today 11-14-2012 Could someone please spell out the command process to make this happen? I've read through so many forums, tried ssh, I know now I'm getting into things that could be dangerous so any help would be much appreciated. • Windows 2008 R2, UDDI 3.0 and No Admin Links

  Windows 2008 R2 might end up giving me a heart attack at some point. Yesterday I installed and configured UDDI 3.0 as part of an ESB 2.0 install & config.  After configuring UDDI 3.0, if I browsed to the localhost/uddi virtual directory from IIS, all of the links would show up in UDDI.  If opened up IE and went to the UDDI site only the Home and Search links would show up. You've probably already guessed at what the "fix" was... I had to Run IE as Administrator.  Then when I browse to the UDDI site all of the links show up.

• Redirecting non existing post to homepage; is that good for SEO?

  I am checking my website out on Google Webmasters and I am seeing an astonishing 5000 links that could not be found by Google's Crawlers. That's normal, because my website is built in a manner that users can drop their own things, which also lead to 404 pages. Not a problem at all if I can find a workaround of course... So my question is: what if I made a function or a mod rewrite that will check if the link exists (a post for example) and if not, it will redirect it to the home page. Is this good for SEO? Will Google see this as 'link found'? How do I have to look at this problem?

• I can't get suspend, hibernate and shutdown to work in Ubuntu 12.04

  I recently built a computer with these specs: Asus Motherboard, Intel i3 3.3 GHz dual processor, 8 GB of RAM. I installed 12.04 on a brand new hard drive. I partitioned the hard drive between root, home and swap like I have often read how to do. I cannot get this machine to properly shutdown. I have to hold the power button down now. Although, for the first few days it properly shutdown. I also cannot get the system to hibernate or suspend properly. I have read tons on this and watched many YouTube tutorials on how to fix both, but the computer never wakes up after suspend or hibernate. It just stays on a black screen. Can anyone help? I love 12.04 so far, but these setbacks are making me worried about stability and power management issues. Also, I wonder if it's really bad for the hard drive to force the CPU to shutdown.

• Connection manager detects network but won't connect

  I've just installed 12.04 on my home desktop. Because of where it's located, in order not to have my children tripping over cat5 cable, I've got a cheap 802.11n USB device plugged in, which uses a Realtek 8192CU chip. The house wifi is protected with WPA2. Ubuntu's Network Manager detects the network, but connecting to it just times out and asks for the password again. I'm sure I'm using the correct password. No other computers on the house network are having any difficulty. This device previously worked correctly with both Windows 7 and OpenBSD in the same machine. The linux-firmware package is installed (from the disc) at version 1.79, and /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin is present. dmesg|grep rtl only shows the "loading firmware" message. I've tried Google, but I apparently can't find the right set of words to plug in, because I haven't found anything related (lots of "doesn't work at all," but nothing matching my circumstances). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 Again ! Ubuntu 13.04 x64

  First I have to say that I tried everything written about this concept. The problem is that it stops working randomly in 3 main forms : 1 - sometimes it disconnect from wireless network and reconnect automatically 2 - sometimes it disconnect and wont connect no matter what (needs reboot) 3 - some times it's still connected but cannot ping or surf or whatever. I already tried disabling N mod using these commands : sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 (or 0, whatever) it didn't help . these are the results of lspci, sudo lshw -C network, • Icons missing from launcher, system settings, folders

  Various icons from launcher are missing. The first one is from Home folder menu the second from Terminal the last one from Desktop Switcher. This happened after I upgraded to 11.10 from 11.04. I have created a New (Untitled Folder) folder in my desktop and the icon is missing too. The same occurs in System Settings menu too. Some icons like Appearance, Keyboard Layout are missing too. Sorry but I can't post a screenshot due to my reputation. Any suggestions?

• How do you track bugs in your personal projects?

  I'm trying to decide if I need to reassess my defect-tracking process for my home-grown projects. For the last several years, I really just track defects using TODO tags in the code, and keeping track of them in a specific view (I use Eclipse, which has a decent tagging system). Unfortunately, I'm starting to wonder if this system is unsustainable. The defects I find are typically associated with a snippet of code I'm working on; bugs which are not immediately understood tend to be forgotten, or ignored. I wrote an application for my wife which has had a severe defect for almost 9 months, and I keep forgetting to fix it. What mechanism do you use to track defects in your personal projects? Do you have a specific system, or a process for prioritizing and managing them?

  Moved from Home to work and went to fire up my project and after long pause "The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string" or even More Abscure ProviderIncompatable Exception Now after 20 mins of chasing my tail re different ver of EntityFramework 4.1 vs 4.2...blahblahblah Look inside at the inner exception A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible DOH!!!! Or a clean translation is that it cant find SQL or is offline or not running. SO check the power is on/Service running or as in my case Edit web.config & change back to Work SQL box   Hope you dont have this pain as the default errors @ the moment suck balls in the EntityFramework 4.XX releases   Cheers

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x86_64 sound artifacts when scrolling with firefox

  I've been using Ubuntu since the 10.04 LTS version and i have a sound problem that still remain in my fresh install of the 12.04 LTS AMD64 version. This install has been performed by formatting the / partition and my documents were kept safe in the separated /home partition. The problem : When i listen to a audio or video source while browsing the web with Firefox, I have some sound artifacts when i'm scrolling and stops when i'm not doing it. This happens when i'm doing X11 related actions too, such as switching between virtuals desktops. Computer configuration of my laptop : - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS AMD64 - Plantronic USB Headphones - Intel HDA Audio sound card (laptop) with SigmaTel STAC9200 chip - AlsaMixer v 1.0.25 - Nvidia GeForce 7950 GTX with Nvidia 295.40 driver Any advices are welcome here :) Note : This is my first post on AskUbuntu.

• Translating to Bash Command

  So for a project for school I had to install the DPJ extension to the Java language. I downloaded and unpacked a tarball containing the files, and then was told to run the following: setenv DPJ_ROOT ${Home}/dpjbin setenv PATH ${PATH}:${DPJ_ROOT}/Implementation/bin How do I do these commands using bash? I know I have to open up the /etc/profile file and add 2 lines (or for the PATH one do I just append something to the top line of the file after a colon?). Any help in how to do this would be appreciated. If it helps I run Ubuntu 14.04 on Virtualbox (and have little to no experience)

  If you have recently installed SOA Suite, created a domain and then tried to start it only to find it fails with the error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. the solution is to edit the file <domain home>\bin\setSOADomainEnv.cmd/sh (depending on your platform) and modify the line: set DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS=-Xms512m -Xmx1024m to something like: set DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS=-Xms512m -Xmx768m Save the file and then try to start your domain again.   When coping a file greater than 64kB from an Ubuntu server to a CIFS mounted windows share, most of the data is copied, but it seems the last chunk doesn't get copied. The size doesn't match, and the md5 check sums don't match. I have plenty of file space, but then I use cp, I get the following... cp: closing `cloudBackup/asdf.txt': No space left on device Using rsync, I get the following... rsync: close failed on "/home/fluffy/cloudBackup/.asdf.txt.qrBWe6": No space left on device (28) rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(752) [receiver=3.0.8] rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (29 bytes received so far) [sender] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(601) [sender=3.0.8] I have full read/write permissions on the mounted share. I can copy locally and between the mount and system via SSH just fine. Any ideas? Thank you
