• This update does not come from a source that supports changelogs

  When I get an update via update-manager for a software like blender/vlc, I like to see what has been fixed/changed. I added the ppa for blender/vlc (this only applies to the software I added a ppa for) sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cheleb/blender-svn sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install blender And vlc like this. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install vlc And when i run update-manager, or update manager pop-ups I see that vlc/blender have updates but, I can't see what has been changed/fixed this is the message I get, the screenshot below is for mupen but it's the same thing. (I updated vlc and blender, didn't wanna wait for the next update) This update does not come from a source that supports changelogs. (by the way I have a dutch Ubuntu, so the above text i Google translated it!) It only shows which version you have and to which version you be upgrading to. So my question is, how do I get the change-log tab of update-manager working. if it's even possible?

• What is a good way to store tilemap data?

  I'm developing a 2D platformer with some uni friends. We've based it upon the XNA Platformer Starter Kit which uses .txt files to store the tile map. While this is simple it does not give us enough control and flexibility with level design. Some examples: for multiple layers of content multiple files are required, each object is fixed onto the grid, doesn't allow for rotation of objects, limited number of characters etc. So I'm doing some research into how to store the level data and map file. This concerns only the file system storage of the tile maps, not the data structure to be used by the game while it is running. The tile map is loaded into a 2D array, so this question is about which source to fill the array from. Reasoning for DB: From my perspective I see less redundancy of data using a database to store the tile data. Tiles in the same x,y position with the same characteristics can be reused from level to level. It seems like it would simple enough to write a method to retrieve all the tiles that are used in a particular level from the database. Reasoning for JSON/XML: Visually editable files, changes can be tracked via SVN a lot easier. But there is repeated content. Do either have any drawbacks (load times, access times, memory etc) compared to the other? And what is commonly used in the industry? • Is there a measure of code rot?

  I'm dealing, again, with a messy C++ application, tons of classes with confusing names, objects have pointers into each other and all over, longwinded Boost and STL data types, etc. (Pause and consider your favorite terror of messy legacy code. We probably have it.) The phrase "code rot" oft comes to mind when I work on this project. Is there a quantitative way to measure code rot? I wouldn't expect anything highly meaningful or scientific, since no other measure of code productivity or quality is so fine. I'm not looking for a mere opposite of measures of code quality, but specifically a measure of how many bad things happened after a series of maintenance software "engineers" have had turns hacking at the code. A general measure applying to any language, or many languages, would be great. If there's no such thing, at least for C++, which is a better than average language for creating messes. Maybe something involving a measure of topology of how objects connect during runtime, a count of chunks of commented out code, how mane files a typical variable's usage is scattered over, I don't know... but surely now, a decade into the 21st Century, someone has attempted to define some sort of rot measure. It would be especially interesting to automate a series of svn checkouts, measure the "rottenosity" of each, and plot the decay over time.

• What have you learnt that has a steep learning curve?

  Recently, I've invested time in learning the intricacies of Git and it has got me thinking about time and learning. (My previous experience with version control systems was only limited use of CVS and SVN.) It took me a whole day's worth of reading to be able to understand the concepts and differences of Git. There are an infinite number of things available for us to learn. Some, more useful than others. I don't know Fortran - I'm relatively young. But looking back at the preceding years of my life, I notice that I'm busier and busier as time goes on. The amount of things I have to get through in a day is increasingly out of my control. It doesn't take a genius to extrapolate that information and realise I'll have even less time in the future - unless I get fired, but I have no strong plans relating to that idea for now. So, given that I have much more time and energy now than I will have in the future: what have you learnt, that has a steep learning curve, that you would possibly recommend to a fellow programmer? Edit: I've stumbled upon the excellent question What programming skills have provided you the best return on investment? and hav realised that my way of approaching how to spend learning time was naive - it doesn't matter if ten useful concepts can be learnt in the time of one if they're worth it.

  I'm trying to compile using the llvm-3.1 package. I'm running 12.04 x64 (3.2.0-26 kernel) && 12.10 (3.5.0-4) x64 backported llvm-3.1 from quantal, then debian experimental. • What would you do to improve the working of a small Development team?

  My company is having a reshuffle and I'm applying for my boss' job as he's moved up the ladder. The new role would give me a chance to move our development team into the 21st century and I'd like to make sure that: I can provide sensible suggestions in the interview to get the job so I can fix the team If I get the job I can actually enact some changes to actually improve the lives of the developers and their output. I want to know what I can suggest to improve the way we work, because I think it's a mess but every time I've suggested a change it's been shot down because any time spend implementing the change would be time that isn't spent developing software. Here is the state of play at the moment: My team consists of 3-4 developers (Mainly Java but I do some .Net work) Each member of the team is usually works on 2-3 projects at a time We are each responsible for the entire life cycle of the project from design to testing. Usually only one person works on a project (Although we have the odd project that will have more than one person working on it.) Projects tend to be bespoke to single customer, or are really heavilly reliant on a particular customer environment. We have 2-3 "Products" which we evolve to meet customer requirements. We use SVN for source control We don't do continuous integration (I'd like to start) We use a really basic bug tracker for internal issue tracking (I'd like to move to an issue/task management system) Any changes that bring a sudden dip in revenue generation will probably be rejected, the company isn't structured for development most of the rest of the technical team's jobs can be broken down to install this piece of hardware, configure that piece of hardware and once a job is done it's done and you never have to look at it again. This mentality has crept into development team because it's part of the company culture.

• A better way to encourage contributions to OSS

  Currently in the .NET world, most OSS projects are available via a NuGet package. Users have a very easy path towards *using* the project right away. But let’s say they encounter some isssue (maybe a bug, maybe a potential improvement) with the library. At this point, going from user to contributor (of a fix, or a good bug repro or even a spike for a new feature) is a very steep and non trivial multi-step process of registering with some open source hosting site (codeplex, github, bitbucket, etc.), learning how to grab the latest sources, build the project, formulate a patch (or fork the code), learn the source control software they use (mercurial, git, svn, tfs), install whatever tools are needed for it, read about the contributors workflow for the project (do you fork &amp; send pull requests? do you just send a patch file? do you just send a snippet? a unit test? etc.), and on, and on, and on. Granted, you may be lucky and already know the source control system the project uses, but in really, I’d say the chances are pretty low. I believe most developers *using* OSS are far from familiar with them, much less with contributing back to various projects. We OSS devs like to be on the cutting edge all the time, ya’ know, always jumping on the new SCC system, the new hosting site, the new agile way of managing work items, bug tracking, code reviews, etc. etc. etc.. • How to ignore certain coding standard errors in PHP CodeSniffer

  We have a PHP 5 web application and we're currently evaluating PHP CodeSniffer in order to decide whether forcing code standards improves code quality without causing too much of a headache. If it seems good we will add a SVN pre-commit hook to ensure all new files committed on the dev branch are free from coding standard smells. Is there a way to configure PHP codeSniffer to ignore a particular type of error? or get it to treat a certain error as a warning instead?   I'm looking for heavy-duty C/C++ IDE for Mac that would satisfy the following criteria: Work with big projects (~5000 files, some of them 100K big) efficiently. Have good navigation both file-based and symbol-based - i.e. "go to file", "go to function" etc. with autocompletion support. Support for "go to declaration/definition" for symbols - functions, structures, etc. Auto-adding new files in folders already in the project. Support for code completion for values, function names, etc. At least rudimentary CPP macro understanding - i.e. #define foo bar then foo() should take me either to #define or to actual bar. I understand full CPP parsing may be hard, but I hope for at least the obvious cases. Support for displaying parameter names/types by function name, preferably - integrated with the previous item, for functions defined in the project. Support for libc would be nice too :) (optional) Cross-project search support (I can manage with grep -r if everything else works) (optional) SVN support, at least to some extent (update, commit, mark updated) Is there such editor around? Free would be nice, but I'm ready to part with some money if it's good enough. I'm using TextMate now but I'm not satisfied with it. Tried Xcode but it seems to not be able to handle a large project - it just crashed...

  Files from my external hard drive are no longer indexed after rebooting. I have to remount and then run # updatedb after each reboot. The problem is updatedb takes a few minutes for my external hard drives. Is there any way I can retain indexing for my externals after I reboot so that the locate command can search through my externals? • How to facilitate code reviews in a small team for embedded software?

  Short Question Does a cost-effective tool / workflow exist to facilitate code reviews in a small team? More specifically, a small team that relies on post-commit code reviews. Background Our team currently consists of 3 full time and 1 part time software engineers, with plans on hiring more in the near future. Due to our team size and volume of projects we all must juggle, the pre-commit workflow that major tools (such as Review Board and Code Collaborator) use is not obtainable for us right now. The best we can do at the moment is to perform post-commit reviews before major releases or as time permits. Nearly all of our projects are hosted on RepositoryHosting.com (which I highly recommend) and contain a mixture of SVN and GIT repositories. Current Thoughts Since I cannot find a tool that fits our needs right now, I am turning to TRAC that is built into our repository's site. At the moment we use TRAC to file tickets and track milestones, so to me this seems like a natural fit for code review results as well. The direction I am heading in right now is to use a spread sheet(s) to log all of the bugs and comments. Do some macro magic to get it in a format that I can use TRAC's import ticket method and use TRAC's ticketing system to create the action items / bug reports automatically. The auto ticket generation is darn near a must have, adding in bugs and comments one at a time from a web-gui is really painful. Secondary Question If this workflow makes sense, is there a good / standard template to use as a code review log?

  Sorry for my bad English, and also you may not read this and waste your time, because it is just a lament of layman developer... Seems no one want to learn anything at my workplace. We have Mantis bug tracker, but our testers use google-docs for reports and only developers and team lead report bugs in Mantis. We have SVN for version control and use Smarty as template system, but our designers give us pure HTML (sometimes it's ugly for programmers, but mostly it's OK) in archives, and changes to design made by programmers go nowhere (I mean designers use their own obsolete HTML and CSS most of the time). We have a testing environment but designers don't have access with restricted accounts to it. So we can only ask them where to look for the problem and then investigate the problem by ourselves (and made changes to CSS by ourselves (that go nowhere most of the time...)). I will not mention legacy code without documentation, tests, or any requirements, just an absence of real interaction in triangle programmers-designers-testers. I'm not talking about using HAML, SASS, continuous integration, or something else, just about using basic tools by all participants of the development process. Maybe the absence of communication is not a problem in short-time projects, which will finish up in 2 months time but rather on the types of projects that lasts for years. Any comments please...

• Script/tool to import series of snapshots, each being a new revision, into Subversion, populating source tree?

  I've developed code locally and taken a fairly regular snapshot whenever I reach a significant point in development, e.g. a working build. So I have a long-ish list of about 40 folders, each folder being a snapshot e.g. in ascending date YYYYMMDD order, e.g.:- 20100523 20100614 20100721 20100722 20100809 20100901 20101001 20101003 20101104 20101119 20101203 20101218 20110102 I'm looking for a script to import each of these snapshots as a new subversion revision to the source tree. The end result being that the HEAD revision is the same as the last snapshot, and other revisions are as numbered. Some other requirements: that the HEAD revision is not cumulative of the previous snapshots, i.e., files that appeared in older snapshots but which don't appear in later ones (e.g. due to refactoring etc.) should not appear in the HEAD revision. meanwhile, there should be continuity between files that do persist between snapshots. Subversion should know that there are previous versions of these files and not treat them as brand new files within each revision. Some background about my aim: I need to formally revision control this work rather than keep local private snapshot copies. I plan to release this work as open source, so version controlling would be highly recommended I am evaluating some of the current popular version control systems (Subversion and GIT) BUT I definitely need a working solution in Subversion. I'm not looking to be persuaded to use one particular tool, I need a solution for each tool I am considering as I would also like a solution in GIT (I will post an answer separately for GIT so separate camps of folks who have expertise in GIT and Subversion will be able to give focused answers on one or the other). • How to forward a [sub]domain to another address? (not just HTTP!)

  Hello everyone! I have bought domain1.me from GoDaddy... (yeah, I know... but ME domain registrars seemed quite hard to find...) I'm mainly hosted at 1and1. I have registered subdomain sub1.domain1.me and redirected it to my 1and1 account. That should eventually work fine. Then I have registered sub2.domain1.me and tried to redirect it to a box at home. It works #1 when for HTTP. I can access SSH server without any problem when I use the IP directly, but not when using sub2.domain1.me:22. The way I see this, they (GoDaddy) are redirecting only on port 80 (why would they?). I have looked at 1and1 forwarding too and they ask for an URI starting with http so I guess that's the same behavior. What are you guys doing to be able to host stuff from home (HTTP, SSH, SVN, Git, etc. etc.) using a domain name to prevent everyone to have to remember your IP??? Heeeelp! Thanks!
