• When compiling programs to run inside a VM, what should march and mtune be set to?

  With VMs being slave to whatever the host machine is providing, what compiler flags should be provided to gcc? I would normally think that -march=native would be what you would use when compiling for a dedicated box, but the fine detail that -march=native is going to as indicated in this article makes me extremely wary of using it. So... what to set -march and -mtune to inside a VM? For a specific example... My specific case right now is compiling python (and more) in a linux guest inside a KVM-based "cloud" host that I have no real control over the host hardware (aside from 'simple' stuff like CPU GHz m CPU count, and available RAM). Currently, cpuinfo tells me I've got an "AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6176" but I honestly don't know (yet) if that is reliable and whether the guest can get moved around to different architectures on me to meet the host's infrastructure shuffling needs (sounds hairy/unlikely). All I can really guarantee is my OS, which is a 64-bit linux kernel where uname -m yields x86_64.

• getResourceAsStream not loading resource

  The project that I am currently working on utilizes an old application contained within a .jar file. One of the responsibilities of this application is that it updates the database when changes to the configuration files are made. Every time I try to run this file (which is a simple Ant Task extension), I get an exception thrown early in the process. I decompiled the Java file responsible, and found that the exception being thrown happens here. I do not know what the issue is, as "hibernate.cfg.xml" is contained within the same .jar file as the .class throwing the exception. ClassLoader loader = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader(); InputStream in = loader.getResourceAsStream("hibernate.cfg.xml"); if (in == null) { throw new RuntimeException("Couldn't find built in hibernate config"); } If anyone has any ideas, even pointing me in the right direction, I would be grateful. Of course, any solution will have to be external, as the client already has this build of the program in production use.

• Tool to diagonalize large matrices

  I want to compute a diffusion kernel, which involves taking exp(b*A) where A is a large matrix. In order to play with values of b, I'd like to diagonalize A (so that exp(A) runs quickly). My matrix is about 25k x 25k, but is very sparse - only about 60k values are non-zero. Matlab's "eigs" function runs of out memory, as does octave's "eig" and R's "eigen." Is there a tool to find the decomposition of large, sparse matrices? Dunno if this is relevant, but A is an adjacency matrix, so it's symmetric, and it is full rank.

• Dynamically changing background color of specific text without changing other attributes

  I've written a chrome extension to find text on a page based on a regex query. When text is matched, I wrap the matched text in a <span> tag that has the class highlight where highlight only changes the background color to yellow. The issue is that sometimes there are already styles applied to <span> tags in a webpage. For example, the webpage might have this defined: span { font-size: 200%; } So when I insert my <span> tag in another <span> tag, the font-size is actually 400%. Is there an easy way for my code to just change certain properties of the text, like the background color, without applying the webpage's styles twice?

  I have a button (outside of a form) that redirects to another page using the onclick attribute that calls window.location to redirect the user to another page. This time I can't change the HTML. I am using Safari 4 for testing. How can I click a button that uses the onclick attribute and window.location to redirect using Safari 4 and Selenium RC PHPUnit Extension? Here's my HTML: <input type="button" onclick="window.location='/registrations/new'" value="Start a new registration" id="create"> Update: Alternatively, I'm thinking about doing something where I assert that a location is specified in the window.location='', store that location, and call the open() command using that location. Not sure if this is an acceptable approach to testing this.

• Adobe Air: Read and Write MP3 or JPG from local directory and switch bytes

  I would like to make my local jpg and mp3 files kind of unreadable (without encoding) by just putting the first 100 bytes from the beginning of the file to the end and then saving the file with a .dat extension. I know I have to use the byte array but can't get it work. I would also need then a small function to read that file and put the 100bytes back to the front so that I can play/display the file. It would be great if you could post the whole function because I am quite new to Air so that I fully understand. Thank You!!!!

  Hi, I have written a dummy (ram disk) block device driver for linux kernel. When the driver is loaded, I can see it as /dev/mybd. I can successfully transfer data onto it using dd command, compare the copied data successfully. The problem is that when I create ext2/3 filesystem on it, I have to use -o loop option with the mount command. Otherwise mount fails with following result: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on mybd, missing codepage or helper program, or other error What could be the problem? Please help.   I have a string "1112224444' it is a telephone number. I want to format as 111-222-4444 before I store it in a file. It is on a datarecord and I would prefer to be able to do this without assigning a new variable. I was thinking: String.Format("{0:###-###-####}", i["MyPhone"].ToString() ); but that does not seem to do the trick. ** UPDATE ** Ok. I went with this solution Convert.ToInt64(i["Customer Phone"]).ToString("###-###-#### ####") Now its gets messed up when the extension is less than 4 digits. It will fill in the numbers from the right. so 1112224444 333 becomes 11-221-244 3334 Any ideas?

  I want to have an AS3 app load images from url supplied by the user. But I don't want a malicious user to be able to load an SWF file in place of the image, such as with an altered extension "maliciousSwf.png". Well, not sure how big a security threat that is above and beyond the ability of the hacker to decompile swf, but I think that ideally such behavior should not be allowed. So, is there any way to prevent this? When people allow users to load images in their Flash apps, do they somehow guard against loading of SWF? Or is this really absolutely no big deal?

  I need to create rules for web.config that will rewrite all requests for files with extension .html to .asp and redirect all .asp requests to .html Example: file_xyz.asp rewrites to file_xyz.html directory1/file_xyz.asp rewrites to directory1/file_xyz.html and file_xyz.html redirects to file_xyz.asp directory1/file_xyz.html redirects to directory1/file_xyz.asp What is the syntax for the rule Is this too broad a rule? If I should need for what ever reason to have a physical file such as file_abc.html how do I exclude it from the redirect rule? I am thinking I should just use ISAPI_Rewrite http://www.isapirewrite.com/ there seems to be a ton of resources out there for rewriting with htaccess and very little online help for using IIS 7 URL rewrite.   Hi all... I've a vb.net class that is invoked with a context menu extension in Internet Explorer. The code has access to the object model of the page, and reading data is not a problem. This is the code of a test funcion... it changes the status bar text (OK), prints the page html (OK), changes the html by adding a text and prints again the page html (ok, in the second popup my added text is in the html) But the Internet Explorer window doesnt't show it. My question is how can I receive this text in the caller side? Any help will be much appreciated.

• Is git svn rebase required before git svn dcommit?

  I'm reading about using git as an svn client here: http://learn.github.com/p/git-svn.html That page suggests that you do git svn rebase before git svn dcommit, which makes perfect sense; it's like doing svn update before doing svn commit. Then, I started looking at the documentation for git svn dcommit (I was wondering what the 'd' is about): http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-svn.html You have to scroll down a bit to see the documentation on dcommit, which says this: Commit each diff from a specified head directly to the SVN repository, and then rebase or reset (depending on whether or not there is a diff between SVN and head). This confuses me, because if you do as the first page says, there will be no changes to pull down from svn once the first part of dcommit finishes. I'm also confused by the part that talks about reset; isn't git reset for removing changes from the staging area? Why would rebase or reset follow (the first part of) a dcommit?

  Hi all, I am using ASP.NEt MVC . I want to upload .zip files for which I am using html input file upload control on my view. I want only .zip files to be uploaded. I want to check that my .zip contains only two files - both having extensions .txt and one of them having name "start". Can anyone please suggest me about how to check this?   I'm transferring fragments of HTML via Ajax. Safari (4.0.5) reports: "Resource interpreted as other but transferred with MIME type text/html." The file name of the file I get has a .html extension. The server does set the header for this: Content-Type:text/html As I said, the content is a fragment of HTML, which is injected into the page (with jQuery). The contents of the file look like: <html> ... some valid html ... </html> What else might Safari need to see to make it interpret the received content as HTML? TIA.

• Any book that covers internals of recent versions of Unix OS

  This summer I'm getting into UNIX (mostly *BSD) development. I've graduate level knowledge about operating systems. I can also understand the code & read from here and there but the thing is I want to make most of my time. Reading books are best for this. From my search I found that these two books The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System (1996) "Unix Internals: The New Frontiers" by Uresh Vahalia (1996) (See here for 2nd edition) are like established books on UNIX OS internals. But the thing is these books are pretty much outdated. So, Is there any recent books that covers internals of recent Unix OS? How about books on other Unix operating systems? They seem to be recent than above books but how close are they to OpenBSD/FreeBSD? Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris Kernel Architecture, 2 edition (July 20, 2006) HP-UX 11i Internals (February 1, 2004) I really don't prefer HP-UX as its not open source.

  I am trying to make an extension as part of which i want certain words in the web pages to be highlighted. The document.body.innerHTML.replace() replaces the url in the address bar as well. So the moment this code gets exwecuted the page doesnt get loaded properly.. • Is it safe to catch EXCEPTION_GUARD_PAGE

  Environment is VC++ 9 on various Win platforms (XP and later) I'm writing an unhandled exception handler. I have a vague recollection from my kernel days that it was bad to catch an EXCEPTION_GUARD_PAGE, as this was generated to tell the OS to enlarge the stack. My question is twofold: Can such an exception occur in user space? If so, is it safe to catch it? I'm not especially interested in doing anything with it. I just want to know if I need to put special code in to not catch it (as I'm catching everything at the moment).

  I understand that when the C# compiler sees a linq query comprehension, it basically does a straight translation to the corresponding Linq Extension methods and lambdas. i.e. from x in list select x.property gets translated to: list.Select(x => x.property) my question is what do let clauses get translated to. for example how would this get translated by the compiler. from x in list let v = SomeComplexExpressionDependingOnx select v (p.s. i know this could be reduced to just select SomeComplexExpressionDependingOnx but i want to know how this is done in general) Thanks!
