  • Should you apply a language filter to a randomly generated string?

    - by Tim
A while back I created a licensing system for my companies new product, as well as all products after this one. As with a lot of licensing systems mine generates codes: 25 character product and registration codes, as well as 16 character module unlocking codes. My question is, since some parts of these generated codes are random should I apply a language filter to it to avoid any embarrassing language being given to the end users? I chose to as it was not difficult at all. But has anyone else ever came across something like this? Any viewpoints as to if it is worth the effort?

  • Could multiple uses of the same keywords in image alt attributes hurt SEO?

    - by saratogahiker
Let's say on an e-commerce site that sells unique pens, on a particular pen's product page, the image of the pen has an alt attribute value of "unique red-striped pen"... and another product has "unique blue-spotted pen", etc... The keywords across all products being "unique" and "pen", which would also be helpful when it comes to SEO. However, if the person just goes to the general "unique pens" category page and sees a list of thumbnail images, each with the words "unique" and "pen" in the alt attribute, would that potentially have a negative impact with regards to SEO by having the same keywords too many times?

  • Release roadmap with scrum

    - by SyBer
I need to prepare an internal product release road-map for product being built via scrum methodology, and have some difficulty correlating sprints to the road-map. The main problem is that as I don't have effort estimations for every story, because these prepared immediately before each sprint, so I don't know what will make into which sprint. I'm fine with changing the road-map as the development goes on, but need it to give at least some indication when things planned to be released. So what would be the best way to do this, other then guestimating the whole backlog? Thanks for any idea.

  • Fix Uninstall Issues with Visual Studio Versions

Have you ever installed a BETA or CTP or an RC build of some Microsoft product such as Visual Studio, and then been faced with the unhappy situation that it could not find the installation sources when you attempted to uninstall the product, or it just didnt uninstall cleanly leaving traces of Registry entries that prevented you from installing a later version? Its certainly happened to me several times. But today I ran into a program called Perfect Uninstaller that, for $35, turned out to be one...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How to specify ingredients in Schema.org (other than recipes or drugs)?

    - by guillem
I'd like to use Schema.org for a series of product specs pages. The products are cosmetics (shampoos, creams, etc.) and ideally an INCI declaration will be included for every product. I'd like to use Schema.org in the declaration, but I cannot find a suitable category in Schema.org. Ingredients is meant for cooking recipes, and ActiveIngredient for (medical) drugs and dietary supplements. Did I overlook some part of the tree? Any ideas for a workaround? Or am I trying to do something out of scope?

  • How to give life to my idea which belong to my company?

    - by pmod
I wonder, what options do I have in the following situation. In the course of the several projects I realised the need in some auxilary software product (related to testing of the main products). I applied a creative approach to the matter and implemented a system which I think has a potential and looking promising (maybe not on the market but at least among some interested supporters). I have even more ideas related to this system and continue developing at my free and work time. It has become a work and hobby at the same time. Unfortunately, this work basically has nothing in common with the company's business and there is no way this will be organized in a form of standard development process and be presented to costumers as a product. What can you suggest in this situation? How to avoid breaching of contract? Have you had something similar in your career? What if my intention is to develop it as an open source project?

  • Are there disadvantages an literal + instead of an encoded + (%2B) in an URL?

    - by M_rk
A client of mine has a product ending with a plus-sign (e.g. Google+) and would like the webpage of this product to have an URL that is human-readable (i.e. an URL that doesn't contain %2B). Since our projects use the following .htaccess RewriteRule RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?$1 it is possible to use an urlencoded space in an URL like that. However, while the url would read like /google+, the actual meaning of the URL would be /google[space]. (The markup won't let me place a real space there.) Now my concern is that this would have disadvantages for SEO. Is this concern valid and/or are there other culprits to this approach?

  • Is this a reliable method of parsing glGetShaderInfoLog()?

    - by m4ttbush
I want to get a list of errors and their line numbers so I can display the error information differently from how it's formatted in the error string and also to show the line in the output. It looks easy enough to just parse the result of glGetShaderInfoLog(), look for ERROR:, then read the next number up to :, and then the next, and finally the error description up to the next newline. However, the OpenGL docs say: Application developers should not expect different OpenGL implementations to produce identical information logs. This makes me worry that my code may behave incorrectly on different systems. I don't need them to be identical, I just need them to follow the same format. So is there a better way to get a list of errors with the line number separate, is it safe to assume that they'll always follow the "ERROR: 0:123:" format, or is there simply no reliable way to do this?

  • What should I do with my programming project?

    - by rambodash
I've been working on a top secret project that has potential of becoming very popular. No one has done anything like it. The problem is I have no motivation to finish it, and its about 70% done. I also don't have the ability to sell & market the product. The documentation is a pain to write. I just want to finish the project , receive my reward and move on to other things. I know that if I were to release it as a product I'm going to have to do support, and do bug fixes. No thank you! I've thought of making it open source but I'm failing to see the benefits. My hard work is just going to be up for grabs isn't it? How can I abandon my project whilst getting rewarded for the work I've done so far?

  • IPC (inter-process communication) server to connect different runtimes

    - by wvxvw
Couple days ago I've spoken to someone who mentioned a server product that has as its main goal the ability to create inter-runtime layer that allows sharing in-memory object between different languages. The person also described the process of creating such layer as defining a number of structs in a special way such that different languages which access the objects would have the same idea of what the data they access looks like. Unfortunately, I forgot what this product is called, and Google didn't help me finding it so far. Would you happen to know what he was talking about?

  • Parsing HTML using HtmlParser

    - by Blankman
My html has 20 or so rows of the following HTML pattern. So the below is considered a single instance of the pattern. Each instance of this pattern represents a product. Again the below is a single instance, it spans multiple rows in the HTML table. <table> .. <!-- product starts here, this html comment is not in the real html --> <tr> <td rowspan="5" class="product" valign="top"><nobr> ????????????</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="title" ??????????>?????????</td> <td class="title" ??????????>?????????</td> <td class="title" ??????????>?????????</td> <td class="title" ??????????>?????????</td> <td class="title" ??????????>?????????</td> <td class="title" ??????????>?????????</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="data" ?????? </td> <td class="data" ?????? </td> <td class="data" ?????? </td> <td class="data" ?????? </td> <td class="data" ?????? </td> <td class="data" ?????? </td> </tr> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="5" ????????</td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="6" width="100%">&nbsp;<hr></td> </tr> <!-- product ends here, this html comment is not in the real html --> <!-- above pattern repeats multiple times in the HTML --> .. <table> I am trying to use HtmlParser for this. Parser rowParser = new Parser(); rowParser.setInputHtml(page.getHtml()); // page object represents a html page rowParser.setEncoding("UTF-8"); NodeFilter productRowFilter = new AndFilter( new TagNameFilter("tr"), new HasChildFilter( new AndFilter( new TagNameFilter("td"), new HasAttributeFilter("class", "product"))) The above filter doesn't work, just showing you what I have so far. I need to somehow combine these filters, and use the last td to mark the end of the pattern i.e. the td with the colspan=6 and width=100% with child element hr. I have been struggling with this, and have resorted to Regex'ing but was told numerous times to NOT use regex for html parsing, so here I am! Your help is much appreciated!

  • Does anyone have database, programming language/framework suggestions for a GUI point of sale system

    - by Jason Down
Our company has a point of sale system with many extras, such as ordering and receiving functionality, sales and order history etc. Our main issue is that the system was not designed properly from the ground up, so it takes too long to make fixes and handle requests from our customers. Also, the current technology we are using (Progress database, Progress 4GL for the language) incurs quite a bit of licensing expenses on our customers due to mutli-user license fees for database connections etc. After a lot of discussion it is looking like we will probably start over from scratch (while maintaining the current product at least for the time being). We are looking for a couple of things: Create the system with a nice GUI front end (it is currently CHUI and the application was not built in a way that allows us to redesign the front end... no layering or separation of business logic and gui...shudder). Create the system with the ability to modularize different functionality so the product doesn't have to include all features. This would keep the cost down for our current customers that want basic functionality and a lower price tag. The bells and whistles would be available for those that would want them. Use proper design patterns to make the product easy to add or change any part at any time (i.e. change the database or change the front end without needing to rewrite the application or most of it). This is a problem today because the Progress 4GL code is directly compiled against the database. Small changes in the database requires lots of code recompiling. Our new system will be Linux based, with a possibility of a client application providing functionality from one or more windows boxes. So what I'm looking for is any suggestions on which database and/or framework or programming language(s) someone might recommend for this sort of product. Anyone that has experience in this field might be able to point us in the right direction or even have some ideas of what to avoid. We have considered .NET and SQL Express (we don't need an enterprise level DB), but that would limit us to windows (as far as I know anyway). I have heard of Mono for writing .NET code in a Linux environment, but I don't know much about it yet. We've also considered a Java and MySql based implementation. To summarize we are looking to do the following: Keep licensing costs down on the technology we will use to develop the product (Oracle, yikes! MySQL, nice.) Deliver a solution that is easily maintainable and supportable. A solution that has a component capable of running on "old" hardware through a CHUI front end. (some of our customers have 40+ terminals which would be a ton of cash in order to convert over to a PC). Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks [UPDATE] I should note that we are currently performing a total cost analysis. This question is intended to give us a couple of "educated" options to look into to include in or analysis. Anyone who could share experiences/suggestions about client/server setups would be appreciated (not just those who have experience with point of sale systems... that would just be a bonus).

  • Beginner questions on Java Regular Expression

    Hello everyone. I began studying Java Regular Expression recently and I found some really intersting task.For example,I now need to dig out "Product Name","Product Description" and "Sellers for this product" out of the following HTML code.(I am sorry for the big chunck of code,but it is very straightforward) <td class="sr-check"> <input type="checkbox" name="cptitle" value="678560038" /></td> <td class="sr-image" style="width: 80px;"><a href="/Nikon-D300S-12-3-678560038/prices-html" class="strictRule" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://img01.static-nextag.com/image/Nikon-D300S-12-3-MP-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-Black/0/000/006/789/461/678946110.jpg" alt="Nikon D300S 12.3 MP Digital SLR Camera Body - Black" class="imageLink strictRule" height="75" width="75" id="opILink_0" title="Nikon Digital Cameras - Nikon D300S 12.3 MP Digital SLR Camera Body - Black" /></a><div class="breaker">&nbsp;</div></td> <td class="sr-info"> <div class="sr-info"> <a id="opPNLink_0" class="underline" style="font-size:16px" href="/Nikon-D300S-12-3-678560038 /prices-html" >Nikon D300S 12.3 MP <b>Digital</b> SLR <b>Camera</b> Body - Black</a> <div class="sr-subinfo"> <div class="sr-info-description">SLR - 13.1MP, 12.3MP - 1x Optical Zoom - CompactFlash, SD/MMC Memory Card - 3in.</div> <div class="rating"> <img src="http://img01.static-nextag.com/imagefiles/stars/stars4_10px.gif" alt="4/5 stars" title="4/5 stars" /> (92 user ratings)</div> <div style="clear: both;"> <!-- nxtginc=nextag.api.ServerInclude$JSPIncludeWriter(/buyer/ATLSSI.jsp?ptid=678560038&dts=y) --> <a id="_atl_0" style="" href="http://www.nextag.com/serv/main/buyer/MyPDir.jsp?list=_transCookieList&amp;cmd=add&amp;ptitle=678560038" rel="nofollow">+ Add to Shopping List</a> &nbsp;|&nbsp; <!-- endnxtginc --> <a rel="nofollow" id="mltLink_0" class="mlt-link" href="/Digital-Cameras--zz500001z2z678560038zB2dgz5---html">See More Like This</a> </div> <div id="fsLink_0" class="featuredSeller"> <a rel="nofollow" class="featuredSeller" id="opFSLink_0_0" href="/norob/PtitleSeller.jsp?chnl=main&amp;tag=785646073amp;ctx=x%2BN%2Fs9zy56l4u8RXCzALE1jeLesDMzeK09rPQEdK3Yjx395ZzX9cMh9N5JAxjk7xPqF9hjk2ztM5IRXU5nspLubIXYaVzI%2B%2Fg7h1Qz58TzgvrWuNawV8qEIqqSmClArWMq6mpzNRuSlgg2xCXYObNnaIH00iKSUmBawDRvecwbCpAxhXgXoLEiEinTwr3EipComdzxL9UHFYTLoWUToUB5SRSsolQmEJ3mgnnvu83%2FC8W34TGpN9mJo%2BnyAeTkt4&amp;ptitle=678560038" target="_blank" >Thundercameras</a>:$1,289 &nbsp; <a rel="nofollow" class="featuredSeller" id="opFSLink_0_1" href="/norob/PtitleSeller.jsp?chnl=main&amp;tag=797076595&amp;ctx=x%2BN%2Fs9zy56l4u8RXCzALE1jeLesDMzeK09rPQEdK3Yjx395ZzX9cMh9N5JAxjk7xPqF9hjk2ztM5IRXU5nspLubIXYaVzI%2B%2Fg7h1Qz58TzgvrWuNawV8qEIqqSmClArWMq6mpzNRuSlgg2xCXYObNrcWLhL%2BhryuAGhXNhYSPE%2BpAxhXgXoLEiEinTwr3EipComdzxL9UHFYTLoWUToUB5SRSsolQmEJ3mgnnvu83%2FC8W34TGpN9mJo%2BnyAeTkt4&amp;ptitle=678560038" target="_blank" >PhotoVideoSuperStore</a>:$1,269 &nbsp; <a rel="nofollow" class="featuredSeller" id="opFSLink_0_2" href="/norob/PtitleSeller.jsp?chnl=main&amp;tag=803555293&amp;ctx=x%2BN%2Fs9zy56l4u8RXCzALE1jeLesDMzeK09rPQEdK3Yjx395ZzX9cMh9N5JAxjk7xPqF9hjk2ztM5IRXU5nspLubIXYaVzI%2B%2Fg7h1Qz58TzgvrWuNawV8qEIqqSmClArWMq6mpzNRuSlgg2xCXYObNt06qcvLJ5UQz7S3zKd4urWpAxhXgXoLEiEinTwr3EipComdzxL9UHFYTLoWUToUB5SRSsolQmEJ3mgnnvu83%2FC8W34TGpN9mJo%2BnyAeTkt4&amp;ptitle=678560038" target="_blank" >Digitalelect</a>:$1,279 &nbsp;</div> I would think of : (1) digging out the product name from <td class="sr-image >tag,and using regular expression exp ="<td><span\\s+class=\"sr-image\"[^>]*>" + ".*?</span><a href=\"" + "([^\"]+)" + "\"[^>]*>" + "([^<]+)" + "</a>.*?</td>"; (2) digging out the product info from the <div class="sr-info-description"> tag. exp = "<div class="sr-info-description"> [^>]*>" (3) digging out the Sellers' names from <div id="fsLink_0" class="featuredSeller"> tag. exp = "<div id="fslink_0" class="featuredSeller[^>]*>" + ".*?</span><a rel=\"" + "([^\"]+)" + "\"[^>]*>" + "([^<]+)" + "</a>.*?</td>"; I am just beginning learing using Java Regular Expression,I would be grateful if you could correct me if I am in the wrong track or my regular expressiona are wrong.   • Problem with script to add/delete from database

Ok - the user enters a product code, price and name using a form - the script then either adds it to the database or deletes it from the database. If the user is trying to delete a product that is not in the database they get a error message. Upon successful adding/deleting they also get a message. I'm having some problems writing data into a file using Perl. sub startNewOrder{ my $name = makeUniqueFileName(); open (ORDER, ">$name.txt") or die "can't open file: $!\n"; format ORDER_TOP = PRODUCT<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<CODE<<<<<<<<AANTAL<<<<EENHEIDSPRIJS<<<<<<TOTAAL<<<<<<< . format ORDER = @<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< @<<<<<<<< @<<<< @<<<<<< @<<<<< $title, $code, $amount, $price, $total . close (ORDER); } This is the sub I use to make the file. (I translated most of it.) The makeUniqueFileName method makes a fileName based upon current time("minuteshoursdayOrder"). The problem now is that I have to write to this file in another sub. sub addToOrder{ print "give productcode:"; $code = <STDIN>; chop $code; print "Give amount:"; $amount = <STDIN>; chop $amount; if($inventory{$code} eq undef){ #Does the product exist? print "This product does not exist"; }elsif($inventory{$code}[2] < $amount && !defined($inventaris{$code}[2]) ){ #Is there enough in the inventory? print "There is not enough in stock" }else{ $inventory{$code}[2] -= $amount; #write in order file open (ORDER ">>$naam.txt") or die "can't open file: $!\n"; $title = $inventory{$code}[0]; $code = $code; $amount = $inventory{$code}[2]; $price = $inventory{$code}[1]; $total = $inventory{$code}[1]; write; close(ORDER); } %inventory is a hashtable that has the productcode as key and an array with the title, price and amount as value. There are two problems here: when I enter an invalid product number, I still have to enter an amount even while my code says it should print the error directly after checking if there is a product with the given code. The second problem is that the writing doesn't seem to work. It always give's a "No such file or directory" error. Is there a way to open the ORDER file I made in the first sub without having to make $name not local? Or just a way to write in this file? I really don't know how to start here. I can't really find much info on writing a file that has been closed before, and in a different sub. Any help is appreciated, Harm
