  • TechEd 2012: Windows 8 And Metro

    Windows 8 is here (or at least very close) and that was the main feature of this morning’s key note.  Antoine LeBlond started off by apologizing to the IT professionals since he planned on showing code.  I’m not sure if IT Pros are that easily confused or why you would need such a disclaimer.  Developers do real work, IT Pros just play with toys (just kidding). The highlights of the Windows 8 keynote for me started with some of the UI design elements that I had not seen when I was shown one of the Build tablets.  Specifically I liked the AppBar features that we have become used to with Windows Phone and some of the gesture features.  Even though they have been available on other platforms before I think Microsoft really got them right. Two other great features of Windows 8 that they demonstrated were the Hyper-V capabilities and the ability to run Windows 8 anywhere from a USB key.  My jaw dropped through the floor seeing a feature rich OS boot off of a thumb drive. WOW!  I also can’t wait to get rid of dual booting just to run Hyper-V images when developing. The morning continued with a session on Metro XAML development with Tim Heuer.  While included a lot of great XAML Metro demos, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the things I found out about Visual Studio 2012.  Finding out that Blend is now integrated with VS2012 was a nice addition after working with them as separate applications was an encouraging start. Moving on to Metro he introduced the nugget that WinRT is Async everywhere.  How deep this model goes will be an interesting thing to find out as I learn more about developing for the platform.  Thankfully he followed that up with a couple of new keywords, await and async, that eliminates a lot of plumbing that has been required in the past for asynchronous transactions. Tim also related that since the Metro framework is relatively small and most apps will use a significant amount of it the entire surface is referenced by default.  This is a contrast to adding namespace and assemblies one after another as we normally do. This was such a power packed session that I can’t detail it all here so here is the teaser list.        Oracle BPM 11g platform provides two modeling tools tailored to different audience. The BPM Process Composer component is a web-based, role-driven, collaborative platform for discovery, design and documentation of business processes aimed at business audience. It empowers the business user to participate in the definition, feedback and design of business processes.     The implicit line continuation feature in Visual Basic 2010 provided an opportunity to improve the code editing experience in XML literals embedded expressions. In Visual Studio 2008, pressing Enter inside an embedded expression would result in the cursor being positioned to the left of the end embedded expression tag. In Visual Studio 2010, pressing Enter inserts a newline for the cursor, and the end embedded expression tag moves to the line below.   • Is hierarchical product backlog a good idea in TFS 2012-2013?

    I'd like to validate I'm not in the wrong way. My team project is using Visual Studio Scrum 2.x. Since each area/product has a lot of kind of requirements (security, user interface, HTTP/REST services...), I tried to manage this creating "parent backlogs" which are "open forever" and they contain generic requirements. Those parent backlogs have other "open forever" backlogs, and/or sprint backlogs.   • An error when installing MVVM Light templates for VS10 Express

    If you tried to install the Visual Studio 2010 Express project and item templates of MVVM Light V3 SP1 (with the Windows Phone tools hotfix), you may have encountered an error when unzipping the package, telling you that a file was corrupted. This error was reported to me a couple of times, and I was able to reproduce the issue. I just published a new version that takes care of this issue. If you encountered that error when installing, please download the new version and try again. Note that the error was only there for the Visual Studio 2010 Express version of the templates.     I need to purchase a single license for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN. The MSDN buy site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb841434.aspx) does not allow purchases from India. It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate?
