  • Google GWT cross-browser support: is it BS ?

    I developed a browser-deployed full-text search app in FlashBuilder which communicates RESTfully with a remote web-server. The software fits into a tiny niche--it is for use with ancient languages not modern ones, and there's no way I'm going to make any money on it but I did spend a lot of time on it. Now that Apple won't allow Flash on the iPad, I'm looking for a 100% javascript solution and was led to consider GWT. It looked promising, but one of the apps being "showcased" as a stellar example of what can be done with GWT has this disclaimer on their website (names {removed} to protect the potentially innocent) : Your current web browser (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.1.249.1045 Safari/532.5) is not officially supported by {company and product name were here}. If you experience any problems using this site please install either Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+ or Mozilla Firefox 3.5+ before contacting {product name was here} Support. What gives when GWT apps aren't "officially" supported on Chrome? What grade (A, B, C, D, F) would you give to GWT for cross-browser support? For folks who don't get these kinds of letter grades, A is "excellent" and "F" is failure, and "C" is average. Thanks for your opinions.

    Hello, I am working on a program where i am recreating the saved widgets back on to the boundary panel. When i am creating them i am also trying to put the values into the ArrayList so that if i want to update and save the opened project i should be able to do so by getting the values from the ArrayList.   • Process.Start() and ShellExecute() fails with URLs on Windows 8

    Since I installed Windows 8 I've noticed that a number of my applications appear to have problems opening URLs. That is when I click on a link inside of a Windows application, either nothing happens or there's an error that occurs. It's happening both to my own applications and a host of Windows applications I'm running. At first I thought this was an issue with my default browser (Chrome) but after switching the default browser to a few others and experimenting a bit I noticed that the errors occur - oddly enough - only when I run an application as an Administrator. I also tried switching to FireFox and Opera as my default browser and saw exactly the same behavior. The scenario for this is a bit bizarre: Running on Windows 8 Call Process.Start() (or ShellExecute() in Win32 API) with a URL or an HTML file Run 'As Administrator' (works fine under non-elevated user account!) or with UAC off A browser other than Internet Explorer is set as your Default Web Browser Talk about a weird scenario: Something that doesn't work when you run as an Administrator which is supposed to have rights to everything on the system! Instead running under an Admin account - either elevated with a User Account Control prompt or even when running as a full Administrator fails. It appears that this problem does not occur for everyone, but when I looked for a solution to this, I saw quite a few posts in relation to this with no clear resolutions. I have three Windows 8 machines running here in the office and all three of them showed this behavior. Lest you think this is just a programmer's problem - this can affect any software running on your system that needs to run under administrative rights. Try it out Now, in order for this next example to fail, any browser but Internet Explorer has to be your default browser and even then it may not fail depending on how you installed your browser. To see if this is a problem create a small Console application and call Process.Start() with a URL in it:namespace Win8ShellBugConsole { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Launching Url..."); Process.Start("http://microsoft.com"); Console.Write("Press any key to continue..."); Console.ReadKey(); Console.WriteLine("\r\n\r\nLaunching image..."); Process.Start(Path.GetFullPath(@"..\..\sailbig.jpg")); Console.Write("Press any key to continue..."); Console.ReadKey(); } } } Compile this code. Then execute the code from Explorer (not from Visual Studio because that may change the permissions). If you simply run the EXE and you're not running as an administrator, you'll see the Web page pop up in the browser as well as the image loading. Now run the same thing with Run As Administrator: Now when you run it you get a nice error when Process.Start() is fired: The same happens if you are running with User Account Control off altogether - ie. you are running as a full admin account. Now if you comment out the URL in the code above and just fire the image display - that works just fine in any user mode. As does opening any other local file type or even starting a new EXE locally (ie. Process.Start("c:\windows\notepad.exe"). All that works, EXCEPT for URLs. The code above uses Process.Start() in .NET but the same happens in Win32 Applications that use the ShellExecute API. In some of my older Fox apps ShellExecute returns an error code of 31 - which is No Shell Association found. What's the Deal? It turns out the problem has to do with the way browsers are registering themselves on Windows. Internet Explorer - being a built-in application in Windows 8 - apparently does this correctly, but other browsers possibly don't or at least didn't at the time I installed them. So even Chrome, which continually updates itself, has a recent version that apparently has this registration issue fixed, I was unable to simply set IE as my default browser then use Chrome to 'Set as Default Browser'. It still didn't work. Neither did using the Set Program Associations dialog which lets you assign what extensions are mapped to by a given application. Each application provides a set of extension/moniker mappings that it supports and this dialog lets you associate them on a system wide basis. This also did not work for Chrome or any of the other browsers at first. However, after repeated retries here eventually I did manage to get FireFox to work, but not any of the others. What Works? Reinstall the Browser In the end I decided on the hard core pull the plug solution: Totally uninstall and re-install Chrome in this case. And lo and behold, after reinstall everything was working fine. Now even removing the association for Chrome, switching to IE as the default browser and then back to Chrome works. But, even though the version of Chrome I was running before uninstalling and reinstalling is the same as I'm running now after the reinstall now it works. Of course I had to find out the hard way, before Richard commented with a note regarding what the issue is with Chrome at least: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=156400 As expected the issue is a registration issue - with keys not being registered at the machine level. Reading this I'm still not sure why this should be a problem - an elevated account still runs under the same user account (ie. I'm still rickstrahl even if I Run As Administrator), so why shouldn't an app be able to read my Current User registry hive? And also that doesn't quite explain why if I register the extensions using Run As Administrator in Chrome when using Set as Default Browser). But in the end it works… Not so fast It's now a couple of days later and still there are some oddball problems although this time they appear to be purely Chrome issues. After the reinstall Chrome seems to pop up properly with ShellExecute() calls both in regular user and Admin mode. However, it now looks like Chrome is actually running two completely separate user profiles for each. For example, when I run Visual Studio in Admin mode and go to View in browser, Chrome complains that it was installed in Admin mode and can't launch (WTF?). Then you retry a few times later and it ends up working. When launched that way some of the plug-ins installed don't show up with the effect that sometimes they're visible sometimes they're not. Also Chrome seems to loose my configuration and Google sign in between sessions now, presumably when switching user modes. Add-ins installed in admin mode don't show up in user mode and vice versa. Ah, this is lovely. Did I mention that I freaking hate UAC precisely because of this kind of bullshit. You can never tell exactly what account your app is running under, and apparently apps also have a hard time trying to put data into the right place that works for both scenarios. And as my recent post on using Windows Live accounts shows it's yet another level of abstraction ontop of the underlying system identity that can cause all sort of small side effect headaches like this. Hopefully, most of you are skirting this issue altogether - having installed more recent versions of your favorite browsers. By reading above message, you can easily understand that - it's a firewall message. I also know that. The problem is "Firewall" is allowing any kind of googling. But when I google "email us" - above message is displayed. My question is why does this happen ?     I am working in google spreadsheets and I am trying to do some counting that takes into consideration cell values across multiple cells in each row. Here's my table: |AUTHOR| |ARTICLE| |VERSION| |PRE-SELECTED| ANDREW GOLF STREAM 1 X ANDREW GOLF STREAM 2 X ANDREW HURRICANES 1 JOHN CAPE COD 1 X JOHN GOLF STREAM 1 (Google doc here) Each person can submit multiple articles as well as multiple versions of the same article. Sometimes different people submit different articles that happen to be identically named (Andrew and John both submitted different articles called "Golf Stream"). Multiple versions written by the same person do not count as unique, but articles with the same title written by different people do count as unique. So, I am looking to find a formula that Counts the number of unique articles that have been submitted [4] (without having to manually create extra columns for doing CONCATS, if possible) It would also be great to find formulas that: Count the number of unique articles that have been pre-selected (marked "X" in "PRE-SELECTED" column) [2] Count the number of unique articles that have only 1 version [4] Count the number of unique articles that have more than 1 of their versions pre-selected 1 Thank you so much! But here the surprising thing is I cant able to receive any mails when i sent mails to [email protected]. But I can able to send mails from the same account ([email protected])to any other email ids. I am looking for a way to automatically redirect a user to a site and maintain the redirect site as the referral site. Let me explain the process and what is needed in a step by step format. User clicks on a desired link in an email User is navigated to testdomain.com User is automatically redirected to test.com/landing test.com sees testdomain.com as the referral site Data is gathered via Google Analytics I am unsure as if this PHP code will take care of it, or not - header("Location: http://google.com", true, 303); I could test and that is most likely what I am going to do. But I would like to understand a little more as to WHY this would or WHY this wouldn't work.

  • Looking for Full Screen Web-Browser in Vizio or Samsung TV's

    I see that Google TV, inside Sony, has a Chrome browser. Is the same thing possible inside Vizio, or Samsung, or any other TV? The 42" Vizio is $499 at Costco, and the Sony with Google TV is $999. We're looking at a buch of these TV's that have build in Wi-Fi, to place around the office as Big Dashboards, and I don't want to have a computer attached to get web content on the screen. It's my understanding that both Samsung Apps, and Vizio Apps, use Yahoo Widgets as their ap engine. Anyone know of a way to get a full screen browser going, without attaching a computer? We thought of attaching an Apple TV, which can be jailbroken, but that is just another piece of equipment to lose, break, etc. Thank you!

  • Why doesn't the Gtalk plugin work in Firefox 3.6 betas? [closed]

    I've done a quick Google search, Bugzilla search, and glanced at Google's site for the GTalk plugin, but I can't find an answer, so I thought I'd pose the question here: On OS X, in the Firefox 3.6 betas (I'm now on beta 5, but it's been happening since at least beta 3), the GTalk plugin doesn't work for me. I've been completely unable to use video chat in GChat, which forces me to open Firefox 3.5 whenever I want to use it. This happens even after I uninstall/reinstall the GTalk plugin. Anyone know why this is happening?

  • Can you convert an address to a zip code in a spreadsheet?

    Given a column of street addresses with city and state but no zip in a spreadsheet, I'd like to put a formula in a second column that yields the ZIP code. Do you know a way to do this? I'm dealing with US addresses, but answers pertaining to other countries are interesting, too. UPDATE: I guess I'm mostly hoping that there's a way to do this in Google Spreadsheets. I realize that you need to access a vast ZIP code database to do this, but it seems to me that such a database is already inside Google Maps. If I put an address in there without ZIP code, I get back an address with ZIP code. If Maps can do that lookup, maybe there's a way to make it happen in Spreadsheets, too.

    What is the best way of forcing googlebot to crawl the page? I've put up Google analytics, registered site with Google webmaster. I've done great deal of SEO work on the website with keywords and titles, I took care of microdata. I submitted the site anonymously, I successfully fetched the site and submit for indexing couple of days ago and still nothing. Last time googlebot visited the site is almost 1 month ago and the indexed content is now obsolete. Am I missing something? or is it just a slow process??

    My google Docs Spreadsheet call returns this response in the json format (I only need everything after "rows") please look at the formatted response here : ) I use php's json_decode function to parse the data and use it (Yes, I am awful at php) This code returns NULL, and according to the documentation, NULL is returned "if the json cannot be decoded". $json = file_get_contents($jsonurl); $json_output = json_decode($json); var_dump ($json_output); // Returns NULL Basically, what i want to accomplish is to make a simple array from the first row values of the Json response. like this $array = {'john','John Handcock','[email protected]','2929292','blanc'} You guys are genius, I would appreciate your insight and help on this very much! Answer as "sberry2A" mentions bellow, the response is not valid Json, google offers the Zend Json library for this purpose, tho I decided to parse the tsv-excel version instead :)

    I'm trying to implement OpenId login for a web application. Whenever new user who logs in via OpenId I create a new user on the sustem, and among the data I store their openid URL, so that next time they login with that user. I'm testing this with my Gmail OpenID, and the problem is that everytime I do this, Google sends a different openid URL, that is, https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=SomethingThatChangesFromTimeToTime Of course I'm then not able to tell wheter this is or not a new user. I'm a bit puzzled: shouldn't the openid identifier always remain the same?
