• How to delay shutdown of an application when user logs off or shuts down Windows?

  I am writing an application that runs in the background from startup to shutdown, and in some circumstances I need the application to display a dialogue for the user to choose whether or not to continue shutting down. This application will only be running on Windows, but may be running on any version from 2000 onward. While I have certainly done some research on the topic, the information regarding the way that windows handles application shut down (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms700677(VS.85).aspx) seems to be a bit scattered. If anyone has an example of the best way to handle this, or additional knowledge regarding the topic, I would very much appreciate it (I have very little experience with C#). Thanks!! badPanda

  I'm working on a program to trigger cut and pastes Pastes i have no problem with (i just dump a string into the clipboard) Cut and or Copys are proving to be a little more difficult The program i have is out of focus and has several hot keys registered with the os ( ctrl+alt+2 ctrl+alt+3 etc) that i want to use to trigger Windows to copy anything that is highlighted in the window that is focused I tried doing a sendkeys SendKeys.Send("^c"); but that seems to work once or twice if at all then stop working. is there a better way to try to trigger windows into coping highlighted content on a different window

  I've never seen this in any jQuery docs I've read; nor, have I ever seen it in the wild. I just observed multi-content syntax working here with jQuery 1.4.2. Is this supported syntax? Is it deprecated? $(".section.warranty .warranty_checks :last").after( $('<div class="little check" />').click( function () { alert('hi') } ) , $('<span>OEM</span>') /*Notice this (a second) argument */ ); I've never seen any indication in the jQuery grammar that any of the functions accept more than one argument (content) in such a fashion.

• Online Game programming in Google App Engine: AI

  I am currently in the planning stages of a game for google app engine, but cannot wrap my head around how I am going to handle AI. I intend to have persistant NPCs that will move about the map, but short of writing a program that generates the same XML requests I use to control player actions, than run it on another server I am stuck on how to do it. I have looked at the Task Queue feature, but due to long running processes not being an option on the App engine, I am a little stuck. I intend to run multiple server instances with 200+ persistant NPC entities that I will need to update. Most action is slowly roaming around based on player movements/concentrations, and attacking close range players(you can probably guess the type of game im developing)

• Facebook Open Graph - Grab how many times a page has been liked?

  I have a site that allows users to create a saying and then users "like" those sayings on Facebook. http://www.likeylikey.net/ I got a friend to throw up this simple code in less than 2 hours so it's basic. He knows little to nothing regarding the Open Graph API. Basically, I want to know how I can programmatically store how many times a page has been liked so I can list a "Top 10, most liked pages" list. Right now the index shows a list of all created pages and now I just wish to show the 10 most liked but I need a way of pulling that information from Facebook. Is this possible?

• Brief Explanation of C Supersets?

  I'm getting more and more confused in regards to C's supersets the further I venture into the programming world. There's just so many versions.. C, C++, C#, Objective-C, Objective-C++ and God knows what else. I only know tidbits about these languages (some are object-oriented, some are procedural, C was originally developed for UNIX, C++ started as an extension and is used primarily on the Windows OS, Objective-C is primarily used on Linux and Mac OS/iOS, etc), but I'm not even sure that what I know is correct. I would just like someone to shed some light on what I "know" - a little bit more information about which are successive versions, which platforms each are generally used on, which are the best versions to learn, etc if anyone is feeling generous. :) Thanks. :)

• Can I use the decorator pattern to wrap a method body?

  I have a bunch of methods with varying signatures. These methods interact with a fragile data connection, so we often use a helper class to perform retries/reconnects, etc. Like so: MyHelper.PerformCall( () => { doStuffWithData(parameters...) }); And this works fine, but it can make the code a little cluttery. What I would prefer to do is decorate the methods that interact with the data connection like so: [InteractsWithData] protected string doStuffWithData(parameters...) { // do stuff... } And then essentially, whenever doStuffWithData is called, the body of that method would be passed in as an Action to MyHelper.PerformCall(). How do I do this?

  Hello there, first time poster. This is a great place for reading about programming problems. I've been looking at some grid computing projects for .Net/Mono and stumbled upon NGrid. NGrid seems really appealing for grid computing because you simply pass threads to it and there is very little modification you have to make to your code. However, I see that NGrid (http://ngrid.sourceforge.net/?page=overview) is still at version 0.7 and hasn't been updated since May 2008. So, I'm wondering if there are any other grid computing projects that use a similar thread-passing architecture and if anyone has had success using NGrid.

  So, I am able to create an array that populates the fields of the Table, but am having troubles creating the subtext that appears below the main fields. • Converting human readable date into integer values

  Hello all, I am looking to do something really simple. Merely convert a string, such as 'december' into something I can use with MySQL (such as '12'). At the moment I use a dict, month_map = { 'december': '12', 'november': '11', 'october': '10', 'september': '09', 'august': '08', 'july': '07', 'june': '06', 'may': '05', 'april': '04', 'march': '03', 'february': '02', 'january': '01' } and then month_map.get('december').   I'm wondering about the famous MSN chat clients conversation windows! I'm sure there must be alot of different aspects but I'd like to focus on those little sliding panes. For instance where the pictures of the people in the conversation is displayed. When you click the collapse button the pictures dissapear and the panel gracefully slides in, and when you click it again to expand, it slides out and the pictures are smoothly faded in. How would one go about customly drawing a control in WinForms that had simmilar behaviour?

• Managed HttpListener vs C++ Network Lib - Requires admin rights?

  So, I have noticed that starting an HttpListener is considered impolite according to Win 7. I cannot do so without administrative rights without adding myself to some URL reservation list. In theory, this is alright, but I'd like to make my program as little invasive as possible. My main other alternative is something like the c++ Network Library, which utilizes boost. This is probably not as simple as a HttpListener though. Will this circumvent the admin rights requirement for listening to some HTTP url? How does windows handle http listening? Right now I'm just listening to http://+:xxxx/url, I guess it's fully possible to just create a Socket listening at port xxxx and provide my own/third party http implementation?

  I have inherited a rails forum (Rails 2.3.2 I think) that alerts people of new posts/replies for the forums or threads they are watching. To make it easier for people to answer to threads I would like to enable reply-to-post, similar to basecamp and a bunch of other forums and tools out there. I would add a separator text (like "----add your reply above this line-----") in the original email. I need to: - process incoming email - extract the new text (above the separator line) - ideally strip out text like "on ... [email protected] wrote:" that is automatically added by some mail clients - identify the thread this email is referring to (either using the incoming address or the subject line) - identify the sender - post the content as new reply Any suggestions on how to get started?   Is there any method that is called or event that is dispatched right before an Element is cleaned up by the JavaScript garbage collector? And a little background: I am writing the Perl module XUL::Gui which serves as a bridge between Perl and Firefox, and I am currently working on plugging a few memory leaks related to DOM Elements sticking around forever, even after they are gone and no more references remain on the Perl side. So I am looking for ways to either figure out when JavaScript Elements will be destroyed, or a way to force JavaScript to cleanup an object.

  When I ask a question here, the tool tips for the question returned by the auto search given the first little bit of the question, but a decent percentage of them don't give any text that is any more useful for understanding the question than the title. Does anyone have an idea about how to make a filter to trim out useless bits of a question? My first idea is to trim any leading sentences that contain only words in some list (for instance, stop words, plus words from the title, plus words from the SO corpus that have very weak correlation with tags, that is that are equally likely to occur in any question regardless of it's tags)

  There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I really would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming. • JBoss - does app have to be compiled under same jdk as JBOSS is running under?

  I'm a little confused about JBOSS and running it under different JDKs. For example, let's say I'm running JBOSS 5.1, and before starting it I set my JAVA_HOME to point to JDK5. Let's also assume that my JEE application is compiled under JDK6. If I deploy the JEE app (compiled under JDK6) to JBOSS, when I try to look up my EJBs I get errors like: javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: tc_test_project not bound But if I recompile my code under JDK5 and redeploy it, it works fine and is able to lookup the EJBs ok. Likewise, I can set JAVA_HOME to JDK6 and start JBOSS, and my code (compiled under JDK6) will run ok under that scenario (it's able to find the EBJs, etc.). So it seems that your JEE app needs to be compiled under the same JAVA_HOME that the JBOSS server is going to be running under, or am I misunderstanding something? Just wanted to get confirmation, thanks.

  Sorry since this question is specific to my problem. While learning reflections i did a mini SQL ORM in a week then minor tweaks while using it for another week. Since it has very little work put into it, its really only compatibility with sqlite. I havent had problems with the code so far but i would like to port it to something that supports TSQL or MySql. The example code is here which is outdated but has the most used functions in my class. What library can i port that code over too with the smallest about of pain. Note that it must support foreign keys.

  Are there any good resources for learning C++ that a C# user could use, which don't require knowledge of C? I have quite a good knowledge of C# via courses in my University's game development program (in a 300 level course right now) but now I need to use C++ for a project. I would use a beginner tutorial but they are so hard for me to follow and learn the basic syntax because they start so slowly. I found a few of tutorials for switching from C++ to C#, but none in the other direction. I do have a little bit of Objective C practice from iPhone programming as well.

Here is the following code : each user in users - if (user.valid == 1) tr(style="color:green;") - else tr(style="color:red;") td = user.mail td = user.lastIp td = user.token td = user.valid My problem is that the tds are created only in the else case. if the if (user.valid == 1) is true, then it creates an empty tr. • Build config file into executable?

  I am currently working on a little graphics demo (using DirectX) which is primarily based around an HLSL shader I am working on. Using the D3DX10CreateEffectFromFile I am loading (and compiling the shader) at runtime as I find it easier for tweaking. However, once I am done I'd like to do some combination of the following: Pre-compile the shader so the demo starts up faster for the user Bury (compile into the executable) the compiled shader (or maybe just the source if necessary) Primarily, I want to do this because I want the demo to just be one file that can be very easily copied around. One thing I could easily do is just put the source text right into a cpp but that would be very tedious I needed to update it later. Is it possible to do something like this (using Visual Studio, DirectX, HLSL)?
