• Choosing connectionstring in VB.NET application at startup

  I have a VB.NET application with a connection to an SQL Server 2003. On the server there are two databases, MyDatabase and MyDatabase_Test. What I would like to do is to show a dialog when the program starts that let's the user choose which database to use. My idea is to create a new form as the starup form that sets this property and then launches the main form. Currently the connectionstring is specified in the application config file. Best would be if I can specify two different connection strings in that file to choose from, but for now it is also acceptable with other solutions like hardcoding the two connectionstrings into the startup form.

• Searching through Collections in Java

  I have a java properties file containing a key/value pair of country names and codes. I will load the contents of this file into a Collection like List or HashMap. Then, I want users to be able to search for a country, e.g if they type 'Aus' in a textbox and click submit, then I want to search through the collection I have, containing a key/value pair of country codes/names (e.g AUS=Australia), and return those countries which are found matching. Is there any more efficient way of doing this, other than looping through the elements of the collection and using charAt()?

  Hi, I run into the following errors when i try to store a large file into a string. Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space at java.util.Arrays.copyOf(Arrays.java:2882) at java.lang.AbstractStringBuilder.expandCapacity(AbstractStringBuilder.java:100) at java.lang.AbstractStringBuilder.append(AbstractStringBuilder.java:515) at java.lang.StringBuffer.append(StringBuffer.java:306) at rdr2str.ReaderToString.main(ReaderToString.java:52) As is evident, i am running out of heap space. Basically my pgm looks like something like this. FileReader fr = new FileReader(<filepath>); sb = new StringBuffer(); char[] b = new char[BLKSIZ]; while ((n = fr.read(b)) > 0) sb.append(b, 0, n); fileString = sb.toString(); Can someone suggest me why i am running into heap space error? • Rails + Dragonfly gem: Saving image in a directory structure based on ActiveRecord object attributes

  I'm using dragonfly gem to manage images and attachments in my rails app and I need to store images in a specific directory structure based on my user model. let' say I have user model which has a name and each user has many albums, which have a name also, then I want the images to be stored in "#{RAILS_ROOT}/public/system/#{user.name}/#{user.album.name}/#{suffix}" I've managed to changed the root_path in dragon fly and I even overrided relative_storage_path like this: class MyDataStore < Dragonfly::DataStorage::FileDataStore private def relative_storage_path(suffix) "#{suffix}" end end but still, I don't know how I can pass the ActiveRecord object attributes like user.name and user.album.name to relative_storage_path to create my ideal path. do you have any idea how I can do such a thing?

• Why many "normal" string in my flashlog file

  I suddenly find that there are many "normal" trace in my file flashlog.txt (supposed at your Window's location:{SysDrive}:\Documents and Settings{yourName}\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\Logs). normal normal normal normal normal normal 1/10/2011 15:32:13.008 [INFO] org.spicefactory.parsley.core.view.impl.DefaultViewManager Add view root: null/flash.display::Stage normal normal normal But when I run the application with the FlashBuilder, the logging in the consul page is ok, it doesn't include any "normal" String. I am very confused by this, I thought that the output of the flashlog.txt file should be the same as that of the consul of FlashBuilder.And I don't think I have added such a stupid trace in my code. The question is how can I find out where these "normal" trace come from and how to remove it. This problem is resolved by restarting the computer as suggested.

I assume I have to "name" the %s and then use a dict in the params, but I'm not sure of the proper syntax? just FYI, I'm aware I can just use my_url twice in the params, but that's not the point :)

• Application Composer Series: Where and When to use Groovy

  This brief post is really intended as more of a reference than an article. The table below highlights two things, firstly where you can add you own custom logic via groovy code (end column), and secondly (middle column) when you might use each particular feature. Obviously this applies only where Application Composer exists, namely Fusion CRM and Oracle Sales Cloud, and is based on current (release 8) functionality. Feature Most Common Use Case Groovy Field Triggers React to run-time data changes. Only fired when the field is changed and upon submit. Y Object Triggers To extend the standard processing logic for an object, based on record creation, updates and deletes. There is a split between these firing events, with some related to UI/ADF actions and others originating in the database. UI Trigger Points: After Create - fires when a new object record is created. Commonly used to set default values for fields. Before Modify - Fires when the end-user tries to modify a field value. Could be used for generic warnings or extra security logic. Before Invalidate - Fires on the parent object when one of its child object records is created, updated, or deleted. For building in relationship logic. Before Remove - Fires when an attempt is made to delete an object record. Can be used to create conditions that prevent deletes. Database Trigger Points: Before Insert in Database - Fires before a new object is inserted into the database. Can be used to ensure a dependent record exists or check for duplicates. After Insert in Database - Fires after a new object is inserted into the database. Could be used to create a complementary record. Before Update in Database -Fires before an existing object is modified in the database. Could be used to check dependent record values. After Update in Database - Fires after an existing object is modified in the database. Could be used to update a complementary record. Before Delete in Database - Fires before an existing object is deleted from the database. Could be used to check dependent record values. After Delete in Database - Fires after an existing object is deleted from the database. Could be used to remove dependent records. After Commit in Database - Fires after the change pending for the current object (insert, update, delete) is made permanent in the current transaction. Could be used when committed data that has passed all validation is required. After Changes Posted to Database - Fires after all changes have been posted to the database, but before they are permanently committed. Could be used to make additional changes that will be saved as part of the current transaction. Y Field Validation Displays a user entered error message based groovy logic validating the field value. The message is shown only when the validation logic returns false, and the logic is triggered only when tabbing out of the field on the user interface. Y Object Validation Commonly used where validation is needed across multiple related fields on the object. Triggered on the submit UI action. Y Object Workflows All Object Workflows are fired upon either record creation or update, along with the option of adding a custom groovy firing condition. Y Field Updates - change another field when a specified one changes. Intended as an easy way to set different run-time values (e.g. pick values for LOV's) plus the value field permits groovy logic entry. Y E-Mail Notification - sends an email notification to specified users/roles. Templates support using run-time value tokens and rich text. N Task Creation - for adding standard tasks for use in the worklist functionality. N Outbound Message - will create and send an XML payload of the related object SDO to a specified endpoint. N Business Process Flow - intended for approval using the seeded process, however can also trigger custom BPMN flows. N Global Functions Utility functions that can be called from any groovy code in Application Composer (across applications). Y Object Functions Utility functions that are local to the parent object. Usually triggered from within 'Buttons and Actions' definitions in Application Composer, although can be called from other code for that object (e.g. from a trigger). Y Add Custom Fields When adding custom fields there are a few places you can include groovy logic. Y Default Value - to add logic within setting the default value when new records are entered. Y Conditionally Updateable - to add logic to set the field to read-only or not. Y Conditionally Required - to add logic to set the field to required or not. Y Formula Field - Used to provide a new aggregate field that is entirely based on groovy logic and other field values. Y Simplified UI Layouts - Advanced Expressions Used for creating dynamic layouts for simplified UI pages where fields and regions show/hide based on run-time context values and logic. Also includes support for the depends-on feature as a trigger. • How do we achieve "substring-match" under O(n) time?

  I have an assignment that requires reading a huge file of random inputs, for example: Adana Izmir Adnan Menderes Apt Addis Ababa Aden ADIYAMAN ALDAN Amman Marka Intl Airport Adak Island Adelaide Airport ANURADHAPURA Kodiak Apt DALLAS/ADDISON Ardabil ANDREWS AFB etc.. If I specify a search term, the program is supposed to find the lines whereby a substring occurs. For example, if the search term is "uradha", the program is supposed to show ANURADHAPURA. If the search term is "airport", the program is supposed to show Amman Marka Intl Airport, Adelaide Airport A quote from the assignment specs: "You are to program this application taking efficiency into account as though large amounts of data and processing is involved.." I could easily achieve this functionality using a loop but the performance would be O(n). I was thinking of using a trie but it seems to only work if the substring starts from index 0. I was wondering what solutions are there which gives a performance better than O(n)?

  Hi, I have got several thousands of lines of a web application source code, initially written on a US development system, to maintain. It makes heavy use of SQL statement strings, which are combined on the fly, e.g. string SQL = "select * from table where double_value = " + Math.Round(double_value, 2); Don't comment on bad programming style, that doesn't help me in this case :) The cruix: My system uses a German locale, which in turn leads to wrong SQL statements, like this: "select * from table where double_value = 15,5" (Note the comma as decimal separator instead of a point). Question: What is the most "elegant" way to change the locale of the web app in this case) to US or UK in order to prevent being forced to change and inspect every single line of code? .net 3.5 is not an option (would give me the chance to overwrite ToString() in an extension class) Kind regards

This where I get stuck. The file test.txt has the below UUID stored in it: self.uid = '5EFF837F-EFC2-4c32-A3D4-D15C7F9E1F22' I want to replace the part D15C7F9E1F22. I have also tried this: r = re.compile(r'(self.uid\s*=\s*)(\S+)') for l in fp: m1 = r.match(l) new=map(int,m1.group(2).split("-") new[4]='RHUI5345JO' But I cannot seem to match the string. • C# how to calculate hashcode from an object reference.

  Folks, here's a thorny problem for you! A part of the TickZoom system must collect instances of every type of object into a Dictionary< type. It is imperative that their equality and hash code be based on the instance of the object which means reference equality instead of value equality. The challenge is that some of the objects in the system have overridden Equals() and GetHashCode() for use as value equality and their internal values will change over time. That means that their Equals and GetHashCode are useless. How to solve this generically rather than intrusively? So far, We created a struct to wrap each object called ObjectHandle for hashing into the Dictionary. As you see below we implemented Equals() but the problem of how to calculate a hash code remains. public struct ObjectHandle : IEquatable<ObjectHandle>{ public object Object; public bool Equals(ObjectHandle other) { return object.ReferenceEquals(this.Object,other.Object); } } See? There is the method object.ReferenceEquals() which will compare reference equality without regard for any overridden Equals() implementation in the object. Now, how to calculate a matching GetHashCode() by only considering the reference without concern for any overridden GetHashCode() method? Ahh, I hope this give you an interesting puzzle. • Using ASP.NET Redirect without string URL?

  For instance, what I have right now is the following: Page.Response.Redirect("Default.aspx", false); Needing to hardcode the string just seems odd to me. The Default.aspx page is already in my project. So is there a way to do the redirect something like the following: Page.Response.Redirect(Default.aspx, false); Where Default.aspx is just the web form. I'd think that this way it would be obvious if there was a problem such as you deleted the web form but didn't update the redirects. Is this possible? Or is there another way entirely I should be looking at this? I suppose I could do something with a static property on the class, but I am wondering if there is a built in thing for this?

• How to manage data access / preloading efficiently using web services in C# ?

  Hello all, Ok, this is very "generic" question. We currently have a SQL Server database for which we need to develop an application in ASP.NET with will contain all the business logic in C# Web Services. The thing is that, architecturally speaking, I'm not sure how to design the web service and the data management. There are many things to consider : We need have very rapid access to data. Right now, we have over a million "sales" and "purchases" record from which we need to often calculate and load the current stock for a given day according to a serie of parameter. I'm not sure how we should preload the data and keep the data in the Web Service. Doing a stock calculation within a SQL query will be very lengthy. They currently have a stock calculation application that preloads all sales and purchases for the day and afterwards calculate the stock on the code-side. We want to develop powerful reporting tools. We want to implement a "pivot table" but not sure how to implement it and have good performances. For the reasons above, I'm not sure how to design the data model. Anybody can give me any guidelines on how to start, or from their personnal experiences (what have you done in the past ?) I'm not sure if it's possible to make a bounty even though the question is new (I'd put 300 rep on it, since I really need something). If you know how, let me know. Thanks

• Domain model for an optional many-many relationship

  Let's say I'm modeling phone numbers. I have one entity for PhoneNumber, and one for Person. There's a link table that expresses the link (if any) between the PhoneNumber and Person. The link table also has a field for DisplayOrder. When accessing my domain model, I have several Use Cases for viewing a Person. I can look at them without any PhoneNumber information. I can look at them for a specific PhoneNumber. I can look at them and all of their current (or past) PhoneNumbers. I'm trying to model Person, not only for the standard CRUD operations, but for the (un)assignment of PhoneNumbers to a Person. I'm having trouble expressing the relationship between the two, especially with respects to the DisplayOrder property. I can think of several solutions but I'm not sure of which (if any) would be best. A PhoneNumberPerson class that has a Person and PhoneNumber property (most closely resembles database design) A PhoneCarryingPerson class that inherits from Person and has a PhoneNumber property. A PhoneNumber and/or PhoneNumbers property on Person (and vis-a-versa, a Person property on PhoneNumber) What would be a good way to model this that makes sense from a domain model perspective? How do I avoid misplaced properties (DisplayOrder on Person) or conditionally populated properties?
