• Wired connection not being recognized

  I'm on Ubuntu Maverick (10.10). I've read a few threads regarding wired connection problems, but haven't found a solution yet. The problem appears after I connect to a wireless network. When I disconnect wireless and plug in an internet cable, the wired connection is not recognized at all. Even the socket appears dead (there are no diodes flashing). The only solution so far seems to be restarting the computer. Network Manager then tries to connect to a Wi-Fi, but the wired connection is listed and working. I've tried sudo restart network-manager, but that doesn't solve anything. After a while, available wireless networks start appearing, but the wired still doesn't. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. • Ubuntu 12.04 - PPTP VPN is the only Internet Access

  I know this has been covered. I've read dozens of posts but still have questions. I have a work server whose traffic should never leave my house without encryption. The VPN is PPTP. Currently I have a cron job that checks the status of the ppp0 adapter each minute. If the connection drops, which it does fairly often, it shuts key components down. It's fairly easy to restart PPTP with "nmcli con up id 'myVPNServer'" but there's no assurance it will reconnect and I need a better way to stop traffic (other than killing apps) when ppp0 is down. The two options I've seen discussed are the firewall (UFW, Firestarter, IPTables) or the route tables. I could be easily swayed to consider the firewall option but I focused on the route tables since no new function needs to be started. My questions involve the way the route tables change and then specifics on rules. When I start the PPTP VPN the route tables change. That suggests that if the VPN drops, the table will change back, defeating my stated intent of preventing external traffic. How can I make "sticky" changes to the route table that will persist even if the VPN connection drops? Perhaps the check boxes "Ignore automatically obtained routes" or "Use this connection only for resources on it's network" (which are part of the VPN configuration options)? It would seem that, if I can force the active VPN route table to stay in effect, even when the VPN drops, that this will effectively kill any external traffic should the VPN drop. This will give me the latitude to run a routine to restart the VPN from the command line (assuming the route table rules don't prevent me re-establishing the connection). • [EF + Oracle] Inserting Data (Sequences) (2/2)

  Prologue In the previous chapter we have see how to create DB records with EF, now we are going to Some Questions about Oracle.   ORACLE One characteristic from SQL Server that differs from Oracle is “Identity”. To all that has not worked with SQL Server, this property, that applies to Integer Columns, lets indicate that there is auto increment columns, by that way it will be filled automatically, without writing it on the insert statement. In EF with SQL Server, the properties whose match with Identity columns, will be filled after invoking SaveChanges method. In Oracle DB, there is no Identity Property, but there is something similar. Sequences Sequences are DB objects, that allow to create auto increment, but there are not related directly to a Table. The syntax is as follows: name, min value, max value and begin value. 1: CREATE SEQUENCE nombre_secuencia 2: INCREMENT BY numero_incremento 3: START WITH numero_por_el_que_empezara 4: MAXVALUE valor_maximo | NOMAXVALUE 5: MINVALUE valor_minimo | NOMINVALUE 6: CYCLE | NOCYCLE 7: ORDER | NOORDER 8:    How to get sequence value? To obtain the next val from the sequence: 1: SELECT nb_secuencia.Nextval 2: From Dual Due to there is no direct way to indicate that a column is related to a sequence, there is several ways to imitate the behavior: Use a Trigger (DB), Use Stored Procedures or Functions(…) or my particularly option. EF model, only, imports Table Objects, Stored Procedures or Functions, but not sequences. It takes the connection strings from the App settings, removing the meta data, that was created by VS when generated the EF model. And then, returns the next value from the Sequence. The next value of a Sequence is unique, by that, when some concurrent users are going to create records in the DB using the sequence will not get duplicates. This is my own implementation, I know that it could be several ways to do and better ways. If I find any other way, I promise to post it. To use the example is needed to add a reference to the Oracle (ODP.NET) dll.

• Using extension methods to decrease the surface area of a C# interface

  An interface defines a contract to be implemented by one or more classes.  One of the keys to a well-designed interface is defining a very specific range of functionality. The profile of the interface should be limited to a single purpose & should have the minimum methods required to implement this functionality.  Keeping the interface tight will keep those implementing the interface from getting lazy & not implementing it properly.  I've seen too many overly broad interfaces that aren't fully implemented by developers.  Instead, they just throw a NotImplementedException for the method they didn't implement. One way to help with this issue, is by using extension methods to move overloaded method definitions outside of the interface. • To Obtain EPOCH Time Value from a Packed BIT Structure in C [migrated]

  This is not a home assignment! We have a binary data file which has following data structure: (It is a 12 byte structure): I need to find out Epoch time value(total time value is packed in 42 bits as described below): Field-1 : Byte 1, Byte 2, + 6 Bits from Byte 3 Time-1 : 2 Bits from Byte 3 + Byte 4 Time-2 : Byte 5, Byte 6, Byte 7, Byte 8 Field-2 : Byte 9, Byte 10, Byte 11, Byte 12 For Field-1 and Field-2 I do not have issue as they can be taken out easily. I need time value in Epoch Time (long) as it has been packed in Bytes 5,6,7,8 and 3 and 4 as follows: (the bit structure for the time value is as follows): Bytes 5 to 8 (32 bit word) Packs time value bits from 0 thru 31 (byte 5 has 0 to 7 bits, byte 6 has 8 to 15, byte 7 has 16 to 23, byte 8 has 24 to 31). the remaining 10 bits of time value are packed in Bytes 3 and byte 4 as follows: byte 3 has 2 bits:32 and 33, and Byte 4 has remaining bits : 34 to 41. So total bits for time value is 42 bits, packed as above. I need to compute epoch value coming out of these 42 bits. How do I do it? • Efficient way to find unique elements in a vector compared against multiple vectors

  I am trying find the number of unique elements in a vector compared against multiple vectors using C++. Suppose I have, v1: 5, 8, 13, 16, 20 v2: 2, 4, 6, 8 v3: 20 v4: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 v5: 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 15 The number of unique elements in v1 is 1 (i.e. number 16). I tried two approaches. Added vectors v2,v3,v4 and v5 into a vector of vector. For each element in v1, checked if the element is present in any of the other vectors. Combined all the vectors v2,v3,v4 and v5 using merge sort into a single vector and compared it against v1 to find the unique elements.   My 1TB USB 3.0 was working fine earlier in Ubuntu as well as Windows. But lately it is not at all being detected in Ubuntu. It still works fine in Windows.
