  • Creating a Custom UserControl TestContainer for Visual Studio

    I like to use the "UserControl TestContainer" that works great for testing a controls properties during design time. Yet it has limitations. Usually, I just create a Windows Form Application to test the control's run-time interface. It would be nice to combine the two phases. Today, I discovered that the test-container is defined in the project file as show below. What I like to do is create my own test-container and use it for my Windows Forms Control Library projects in Visual Studio 2008. I cannot find any specific documentation, and the documentation I found was related to MSTest and not helpful.   • Visual Studio XSD Tool: Generate Collections Rather Than Arrays

    I generated some C# classes from an XSD using the Visual Studio XSD utility and it generated arrays for storing a collection of elements, rather than one of the built-in generic Collection<T> (or related) classes. None of the command line parameters mentioned in xsd /? mention anything about generating collections rather than arrays, but I know that this can be done with web service proxy classes that Visual Studio generates, so I figured it must be possible. Does anybody know how to have the XSD utility generate collection classes rather than arrays?

    Just installed and migrated a 2008 solution on Vista ultimate 64 and .net 4.0. Everything builds and test run surprisingly well but I got the hang description below while trying to run the app under SQLite (ran fine. Any clues?   • Visual Studio Symbols stored/loaded from wrong place

    Hello, I'm rather new to symbol servers and I've been experimenting with them and Visual Studio 2008 running Windows XP(SP3). I've encountered a wierd problem as my symbols are not being cached locally in the directory I've specified all the time. The possible reasons I have found for this si that the symbols(.pdb's) are being written to VS's IDE directory and/or the symbols are somehow being written in with the .exe, which I find odd since it should be read only. The symbols are being sent to the "server" I've specified so that part of the system shouldn't be the problem. Has anyone else had this type of issue before and/or maybe a solution to this problem?   • erroneous Visual C float / double conversion?

    In Visual C++ i wrote the following sample in a C++ program: float f1 = 42.48f; double d1 = 42.48; double d2 = f1; I compiled the program with Visual Studio 2005. In the debugger i see the following values: f1 42.480000 float d1 42.479999999999997 double d2 42.479999542236328 double d1 by my knowledege is OK, but d2 is wrong. The problem occurs as well with /fp=precise as with /fp=strict as with /fp=fast. Whats the problem here? Any hint how to avoid this Problem? This leads to serious numerical problems.

  • Viewing array of pointers to structures in Visual Studio in the debugger

    I'm having a problem displaying the contents of a pointer array with its contents in the debugger. If I just add the pointer to the watch only the fist entry is visible. But if I add the length to it the debugger assumes that I have something like array[length][length]. Picture The first entry is the broken one, looks the same with ,2 or with any ,2 x. The second one is what I would like to see, but for more entries. Edit: The two entries displayed as [x][1] are invalid. I'm using VS 2005 but I think I had this problem on 2008 as well. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

  • Visual Studio confused by server code inside javascript

    I ran into an annoying problem: the following code gives a warning in Visual Studio. <script type="text/javascript"> var x = <%: ViewData["param"] %>; </script> The warning is "Expected expression". Visual Studion gets confused, and all the javascript code after that is giving tons of warnings. Granted, it's all warnings, and it works perfectly fine in runtime - but it is very easy to miss real warnings among dozen of false positives. It was working the same way in VS2008, and it wasn't fixed in VS2010. Does anybody know if there is a workaround, or a patch?

  • What version of Windows 7 for ASP.NET development on Visual Studio

    Hi, I am about to upgrade my pc, and operating system at the same time. I was wondering what version of Windows 7 to get pre-installed, given that I want to do some ASP.NET development using Visual Studio. Specifically : Will all versions of Windows 7 run an IIS server & be suitable for ASP.NET development ? Are all good for running SQL Server etc ? Will Windows 7 have any probs running old versions of Visual Studio (Ie. 2003 & 2005 versions). Are there any other things I need to consider ? I'm probably going for the 32 bit version of Windows 7.   • Visual studio project properties tab "web" missing

    Hello! I have recently started having a strange problem with visual studio 2008 sp1: in the properties of my web projects I can't see the Web tab - I get the following error: Unable to create the designer. File is already opened in an incompatible editor. Or in the case of ASP.NET MVC: An error occurred trying to load the page. 909d16b3-c8e8-43d1-a2b8-26ea0d4b6b57 I can see the "web" tab if it's not selected immediately but once i click on it, the header of the tab goes blank and tha main pane just shows the error. I have unistalled both VS2008 and MVC, reistalled - same thing. Tried devenv /resetsettings also... I would really appreciate any help, I'm stuck! Nothing on google either:(

  • Visual Studio detaches from application as soon as debugging starts

    I have a web application that I've always been able to run in Visual Studio and it debugs just fine (breakpoints work, I can pause execution, etc). Recently, the behavior changed suddenly, and a few things happen: I start debugging, it lauches IE and loads the application, but after a few seconds (sometimes the page hasn't even displayed yet), Visual Studio acts as if debugging has stopped - I'm able to edit code in VS again, and the "Play" button on the toolbar is enabled. The application continues to run in the IE window just spawned, but I'm not attached to it During this few seconds that VS is "debugging", because it detaches, my breakpoints show as hollow - as if I'm set to "Release" mode and they won't be hit. In fact, I have a breakpoint set in Page_Load, and it skips right by. I've checked, and I'm set to debug mode, though the compile mode dropdown is missing from my toolbar (I checked in the build properties to ensure I was in debug mode). Can anybody shed some light here?

  • Making Eclipse behave like Visual Studio

    I'm doing some Android dev, and I much prefer Visual Studio, but I'll have to use Eclipse for this. Has anyone made a tool that switches Eclipse to look and behave more like visual studio? I mainly can't stand its clippyesqe suggestions on how I should program (Yes, I know I have not yet used that private field! Thanks Eclipse!), or its incredibly lousy intellisense. For example, in eclipse, if I don't type "this" first, its intellisense won't realize I want to look for locally scoped members. Also, the TAB to complete VS convention is drilled into my head, and Eclipse is ENTER to complete, I could switch everything by hand but that would take hours, and I was hoping someone had some sort of theme or something that has already done it :)

    We just got a new developer and I'm trying to set him up with Dev Studio 2005 (The version we all use at this office), and we're running into a weird problem that I've never seen before. I have some code that works perfectly on my system, and he can't seem to get it compiled. We've tracked the issue down to his copy of dev studio ignoring the preprocessor directives. For example, in the project properties under C/C++|Preprocessor|Preprocessor Directives, I add DEFINE_ME. Which should translate to a /D"DEFINE_ME" for the compiler. And it does in my development environment, but it doesn't on his. I verified that when he checks out the code from the source repository, that he has the same version of the code I do. And if I look in his Project Properties, all of the directives are there. For some reason they're just not getting passed down to the compiler. Any Ideas?

    I followed the tutorial here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/Video/bb735001 which is for VS2005. I am on VS2010. After the Wizard finished, it says A project of same name is already opened in the solution. What's the matter? I tried several times changing the name of the vspackage to be sure but always same result. Update: I tried in Visual Studio 2008 and it doesn't occur so it's really a bug in VS2010 ! Did someone try ?

  • Where did my Visual Studio exception assistant go?

    Since a couple of weeks the Visual Studio (2008 9.0.30729.1 SP) Exception Assistant has stopt appearing while debugging using the C# IDE. Instead the old ugly and useless debug dialog comes up: To make sure, I've checked the following: "Tools / Options / Debugging / General / Enable the exception assistant" is on. "Debug / Exceptions / Common Language Runtime Exceptions / Thrown" is on. I reset my Visual Studio Settings. I googled. I checked all relevant stackoverflow questions. How can I get the Exception Assistant back? Who gives me the golden tip?

  • Group SQL tables in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio object explorer

    I have a table which has approximately sixty tables, and other tables are added constantly. Each table is a part of a schema. A such quantity of tables makes it difficult to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. For example, I must scroll up in object explorer to access database related functions, or scroll down each time I need to access Views or Security features. Is it possible to group several tables to be able to expand or collapse them in Object Explorer? Maybe a folder may be displayed for each schema, letting collapse the folders I don't need to use?

    I am a Java programmer, and just starting to use Visual Studio to do C# programming. In Java IDE such as Eclipse, if I do not know the classname in a package, I can just type a dot (.) after a package name, then I will get a list of all the classes in that package in the IDE. How I can configure visual studio to do the similar thing, say, if I click a namespace name in a file (for example, using System), or add a dot after the namespace, all the classes in that namespace will be displayed somewhere in the IDE?

  • Visual Studio WCF Application now asking to manually attach to process

    I have a console app that is calling a WCF app hosted in IIS. Up until now everything has been fine and I am able to debug the app - step through it without any problems... Until I added my dev pc to a domain.... now every time I get step into the code hosted in IIS, a popup comes up asking if I would like to attach to this process... I can then continue debugging... again not a huge train smash - however... now it randomly just jumps to the end of the process (almost like some kind of timeout) and I am not able to reliably step and debug the IIS hosted code.... Any ideas? All the projects are in the same solution, and all running on the local dev pc... Using Visual Studio 2008, dev PC is Win 7
