  I'm curious to know what workstation hardware companies are devoting to you, as a developer -- and how much they're spending. I'd consider this thread a big success if I could shed some light on these questions: Do engineers at big companies use substantially different hardware than engineers at start-ups companies? Does a fresh developer recruit at Google get substantially different hardware from someone in the same position at Microsoft or Yahoo!? Do programmers in more senior positions have more powerful hardware on their desks? Does anyone think faster hardware makes more efficient engineers?

• How to reduce the number of cert validation requests... (IE is killing me slowly)

  On a customer's internal network, I can make a request to my SSL site using IE6 SP1 (on Win2K) and see one cert validation requests, but if I use IE6 SP2 (on XP) 13 separate cert validation requests get fired off. Needless to say, this slows down my page load a lot. Firefox loads the page just fine with no unnecessary cert validation requests. The server is Apache running a pretty new lampp stack. All the server certificate / CA chain configurations seem to be fine (users can authenticate w/ trusted certs, the system can communicate to other systems with that server cert, etc.) Is there anything I can do from a configuration standpoint? Any other ideas at all?

• Create a hyperlink of a slanting image in expression Blend

  I am developing a navigation menu in silverlight that has 6 images. As you mouseover each image grows and clicking on an image will take you to a page on the website. The customer I am doing this for decided that straight rectangular images were boring and I showed him a design where I have slanted each image so each one is now a rhomboid shape. Horizontal top and bottom with sides slanting about 30deg from vertical. I have been unable to figure out any way of growing each image on mouseover without putting a white block over the adjacent images. Would be grateful for any pointers.

  Hello, in my Rails 3 App, I'm posting with jQuery the following: http://0.0.0.0:3000/topics/read_updater?&topic_id=101&read=true In my controller: def read_updater current_user.topics.where(:topic_id => params[:topic_id]).update_all(:read => params[:read]) render :json => {:status => 'success' } end params[:conversation_id] works great, but params[:read] is inserting empty values in the DB, even though jQuery is posting either a true or false. Ideas? I want rails to update the DB with either true or false. Thanks

• Ms Excel Problem Linking Range in Source Document to Custom Function in Target Document

  I have some customer MS Excel VBA code (MS Excel 2007) that takes a range as input and then does some work on it (it is quite a large range). I want to use a separate excel document as the source of the range data. If I have both the source and target document open then the function works just fine. If I have only the target document open I get #Value! returned and stepping through in the debugger I see "Error 2023" in the data value passed in. Any ideas how I make this work without having to open both spreadsheets simultaneously?

• How can I close a SimpleModal dialog when the user clicks the Back button?

  When a user clicks on a button or link, I use the SimpleModal jQuery plugin to display a dialog to overlay the entire page, preventing the user from clicking another button or link during the delay before the next page loads. (I'd like to avoid this, but that's an issue for another day.) After the next page displays, if the user clicks the Back button, the previous page still has the SimpleModal overlay displayed, preventing them from using the page. This is a problem. How can I cause the SimpleModal dialog to close automatically either when the leaves the page or when the user clicks the Back button to return to the page? I tried this without success: $("body").unload(function() { $.modal.close(); }); Thanks! Wally

• Returning the html from .ajax call

  I'm getting undefined for some reason when I try to return the html via the callback function: function getDataFromUrl(urlWithContent) { // jQuery async request $.ajax( { url: urlWithContent, dataType: "html", success: function(data) { return $('.result').html(data); }, error: function(e) { alert('Error: ' + e); } }); } I know I'm getting data back, I see it in firebug in the response and also when I alert out the data, I see the entire page content come up in the alert box. When I call my function, I am doing the following: var divContent = getDataFromUrl(dialogDiv.attr("href")); if(divContent) dialogDiv.innerHTML = divContent; when I alert out the divContent (before the if statement) I'm getting undefined. Maybe I'm just going about this wrong on how I'm returning back the data? I also tried just return data; same thing, I get undefined after the call to this method when set to my variable.

  Is there a way to merge two primary keys into one and then cascade update all affected relationships? Here's the scenario: Customers (idCustomer int PK, Company varchar(50), etc) CustomerContacts (idCustomerContact int PK, idCustomer int FK, Name varchar(50), etc) CustomerNotes (idCustomerNote int PK, idCustomer int FK, Note Text, etc) Sometimes customers need to be merged into one. For example, you have a customer with the id of 1 and another with the id of 2. You want to merge both, so that everything that was 2 is now 1. I know I could write a script that updates all affected tables one by one, but I'd like to make it more future proof by using the cascade rules, so I don't have to update the script every time there is a new relationship added. Any ideas?

  Hi, I want to call a webservice using jQuery.ajax() but the webervice doesn't get called. - If I change the url: to reference a .ashz file it gets called but not .asmx? • Remote application monitoring through Visual GC

  I am trying to monitor an application available on remote machine using VisualVM & Visual GC. I have enabled the jmxremote on the remote side as follows: -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=8888, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false While monitoring through VisualVM, everything runs fine but VisualGC doesn't displays any stats (getting Not Supported for this JVM error). While tried to monitor one local application, VisualGC runs fine... Got success with the remote app once started jstad on the remote jvm. Is this a known issue with VisualGC...? Remote JVM - 1.5 Local JVM - 1.6

It's a comic shop, and I want to make a place where people can manage their own subscriptions. Since the number of different titles a customer subscribes to can vary pretty widely, I want a way to make a completely dynamic form, with people able to add as many new lines as they need and I'm really struggling with Drupal's documentation. • Read random lines from huge CSV file in Python

  I have this quite big CSV file (15 Gb) and I need to read about 1 million random lines from it. As far as I can see - and implement - the CSV utility in Python only allows to iterate sequentially in the file. It's very memory consuming to read the all file into memory to use some random choosing and it's very time consuming to go trough all the file and discard some values and choose others, so, is there anyway to choose some random line from the CSV file and read only that line?   I know it's possible to separate to create a pointer to member function like this struct K { void func() {} }; typedef void FuncType(); typedef FuncType K::* MemFuncType; MemFuncType pF = &K::func; Is there similar way to construct a pointer to a const function? I've tried adding const in various places with no success. I've played around with gcc some and if you do template deduction on something like template <typename Sig, typename Klass> void deduce(Sig Klass::*); It will show Sig with as a function signature with const just tacked on the end. If to do this in code it will complain that you can't have qualifiers on a function type. Seems like it should be possible somehow because the deduction works.

• Accessing entire netflix catalog via API v1.5

  Netflix recently updated their API methods for obtaining the full Netflix catalog. I'm curious if anyone has had any success accessing these new xml documents and downloading them via API v1.5 (9/2012). Previously, you could download the entire Netflix catalog via one API call (which I had working perfectly). Now, there are supposedly two calls to make: one for dvd's and one for streaming movies. I cannot make these calls return anything except for an empty array. Please don't offer an answer unless you have personally downloaded the entire catalog via these new API's. • Custom component creation - how to add small icon representing component in Tool Palette?

  Please bear in mind that I've read all the instructions I could find about adding component icon to my custom component. And I am able to do this when we talk about the icon size which is 24x24 pixels. I see the icon when a component is dropped on the form. However I can not see the small 16x16 icon which should be displayed when browsing Tool Palette. I've read that I should name my two other BMP files which are contained in DCR file like this: MyComponentName16 [for 16x16 BMP file] MyComponentName32 [for 32x32 BMP file] Unfortunately this does not seem to work, I've tried to restart Delphi few times in hope that it might be the case of not refreshing something, but without any success. Any ideas?

• How to connect to a legacy Informix database?

  I have to connect my app to a customer's Informix 7.2 legacy database. From what I was able to find out, in theory there should be a database service running on port 50000. The problem is that I cannot find any database service in the Operative System. So far I'm only able to use dbaccess and perform queries from the command line. I would like to use a database driver (such as http://code.google.com/p/ibm-db/) so my app can connect and query the database using a cursor, but since I cannot find any database service, apparently I can't... Am I missing something here? Are there options I'm not considering? Is it possible to have an Informix database in which the only interface is dbaccess?

  I'm working on an application which use ajax call to get html from the server. When I run it on the server, everything works fine. But when I'm running on a localhost, I've a 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' error. I looked arround and it seems like using jsonp could be the solution. So, my ajax call looks like that: $.ajax({ url: url, dataType: 'jsonp', crossDomain: true, type: 'GET', success: function(data){ // should put the data in a div }, error: function(){ //do some stuff with errors } }); I get html from the server, but I always have this error: Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token < Is there a way to wrap the jsonp response in html?
