• Display folder sizes in file manager

  In nautilus (or nemo) file manager, the "Size" column shows the filesize for files and the number of items contained in a folder for subdirectories: Number of items is not that important for me, it would be more useful if I could make this column show the total size contained under the directory. I had an extension on windows called foldersize which shows what I mean: I think it involved a service which ran in the background monitoring filesystem modifications in order to make sure the column was kept up to date. I am interested to know if there is any similar extension to nautilus, I would also be open to switching to another file manager to get this functionality. I am aware of the Disk Usage Analyser in Ubuntu, but what I'm looking for is a solution with file manager integration.

• Installed Ruby 1.9.2 but new gems won't create scripts into /usr/bin

  I had previously ruby 1.8 on my Ubuntu 10.10, which I removed through Synaptics. Then I have installed ruby 1.9.1 also via Synaptics (which is then saying that itself is version 1.9.2). Then I installed ruby-debug19 and rspec gems with sudo gem install ruby-debug19 rspec However I can't start rdebug or rspec, but I can invoke the debugger from inside my ruby script, so the debugger is working. I inspected the starting scipts rdebug and rspec and then I realized that they are still old scripts back from ruby1.8 time. In other worlds, the current 1.9 install of these gems haven't created the starting scripts anywhere. What is the easiest solution for a lazy soul like me? It looks like removing-reinstalling ruby 1.9.2 won't help, and installing these gems over and over againg won't create the starting scripts.

• MySQL - ODBC Data Connector

  Having previsouly installed and then configured MySQL, you may now need to install the ODBC Data Connector driver in order to connect to your MySQL database. Following the Splash screen the first thing to choose is the Setup Type for your installation.  As usual I chose custom so that I could see the components that were actually being installed.  In this case the custom set up screen allows you to choose to install the driver and the documentation. Finally you can complete the installation Assuming it completes okay you have now installed the MySQL ODBC driver. My intention for installing all these MySQL components is so that I can now attempt to get BizTalk 2009 talking to the MySQL database for a solution that I am currently working on.  For this I will next be looking at the Community ODBC Adapter.

  I basically need some confirmation and clarification concerning Windows Azure with respect to a Silverlight application using RIA Services. In a normal Silverlight app that uses RIA services you have 2 projects: App App.Web ... where App is the default client-side Silverlight and app.web is the server-side code where your RIA services go. If you create a Windows Azure app and add a WCF Web Services Role, you get: App (Azure project) App.Services (WCF Services project) In App.Services, you add your RIA DomainService(s). You would then add another project to this solution that would be the client-side Silverlight that accesses the RIA Services in the App.Services project. You then can add the entity model to the App.Services or another project that is referenced by App.Services (if that division is required for unit testing etc.) and connect that entity model to either a SQLServer db or a SQLAzure instance. Is this correct? If not, what is the general 'layout' for building an application with the following tiers: UI (Silverlight 4) Services (RIA Services) Entity/Domain (EF 4) Data (SQL Server)

• Are there any plans to create a standard based on libunity?

  In the last few month and maybe even years, Ubuntu and Canonical often were criticised for developing software and desktop components without talking to other groups in the free software community. I don't want to comment on this topic, but I see problems arising with creating a "proprietary" solution for displaying indicators and progressbars with a launcher like Unity. In the world of free and open Desktop Environments we often try to standardize parts and libraries or write specifications to increase collaboration between different desktops. We have the instrument of http://freedesktop.org and a lot of specifications are getting implemented by the major Desktop Environments. In this context, proposing a standard for those indicators would be a great step towards better interoperability between desktops. These indicators represent a great feature on the Linux Desktop and I'm sure that other projects like AWN, Docky, etc. would pick them up. • Tips or techniques to use when you do't know how to code something?

  I have a background as UI designer. And I realized that it is a bit hard for me to write a pieces of logic. Sometimes I get it right, but most of the time, I end up with something hacky (and it usually takes a lot of time). And is not that I don't like programming, in fact, I'm starting to like it as much as design. It's just that sometimes I think that I'm better at dealing with colors an shapes, rather than numbers and logic (but I want to change that). What I usually do is to search the solution on the Internet, copy the example, and insert it into my app (I know this is not a very good practice). I've heard that one tip was to write the logic in common English as comment before writing the actual code. What other tips and techniques I can use?

• Accenture Launches Smart Grid Data Management Platform

• SEOs: mobile version using AJAX: how to be properly read by crawlers?

Here's what I can do: First choice: create classical web version with all products in that page - http://www.myweb.com. create mobile web version with all products in the page and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely but this may be long to (load + format), and may provide bad user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Second choice: create classical web version with all products in that page create mobile web version with almost nothing but a Web page showing wait, then download all products in the page using AJAX and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely. Showing a wait, loading message gives far more time to do whatever I want and may provide better user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Question: if I choose the second solution, Google won't read anything on the mobile version (because all products will be downloaded in the page using AJAX), so it wont be properly read by crawlers. What / how shall I do?

• I'm building a theme for tumblr and the {HasPages} doesn't seem to work properly.

  I've put the HTML draft of the theme so far, with minor CSS edits. Currently I have all the block posts and everything else that's essential to a tumblr theme but I can't seem to get the {HasPages} block to work properly. I've tested it on a different tumblr, also. There are pages created and I already have provided some basic CSS for it just in case. But there isn't anything showing up. Has anyone has this problem and if so, is there a solution I'm missing? • Scheduling Jobs in SQL Server Express

  As we all know SQL Server 2005 Express is a very powerful free edition of SQL Server 2005. However it does not contain SQL Server Agent service. Because of this scheduling jobs is not possible. So if we want to do this we have to install a free or commercial 3rd party product. This usually isn't allowed due to the security policies of many hosting companies and thus presents a problem. Maybe we want to schedule daily backups, database reindexing, statistics updating, etc. This is why I wanted to have a solution based only on SQL Server 2005 Express and not dependent on the hosting company. And of course there is one based on our old friend the Service Broker.

• Adding Custom Pipeline code to the Pipeline Component Toolbox

Right Click on title bar and select Choose items. Click on the BizTalk Pipeline Components tab and select the new component from the list. If it is not available in the list Browse to the BizTalk pipeline component folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006\Pipeline Components) and select the dll.

• MSSQL: Copying data from one database to another

  I have database that has data imported from another server using import and export wizard of SQL Server Management Studio. There is also empty database with same tables but it also has primary keys, foreign keys and indexes. How to get data from first database to another? Here is the description of my crusade. And believe me – it is not nice one. Bugs in import and export wizard There is some awful bugs in import and export wizard that makes data imports and exports possible only on very limited manner: wizard is not able to analyze foreign keys, wizard wants to create tables always, whatever you say in settings. The result is faulty and useless package. Now let’s go step by step and make things work in our scenario. Database There are two databases. Let’s name them like this: PLAIN – contains data imported from remote server (no indexes, no keys, no nothing, just plain dumb data) CORRECT – empty database with same structure as remote database (indexes, keys and everything else but no data) Our goal is to get data from PLAIN to CORRECT. 1. Create import and export package In this point we will create faulty SSIS package using SQL Server Management Studio. Run import and export wizard and let it create SSIS package that reads data from CORRECT and writes it to, let’s say, CORRECT-2. Make sure you enable identity insert. Make sure there are no views selected. Make sure you don’t let package to create tables (you can miss this step because it wants to create tables anyway). Save package to SSIS. 2. Modify import and export package Now let’s clean up the package and remove all faulty crap. Connect SQL Server Management Studio to SSIS instance. Select the package you just saved and export it to your hard disc. Run Business Intelligence Studio. Create new SSIS project (DON’T MISS THIS STEP). Add package from disc as existing item to project and open it. Move to Control Flow page do one of following: Remove all preparation SQL-tasks and connect Data Flow tasks. Modify all preparation SQL-tasks so the existence of tables is checked before table is created (yes, you have to do it manually). Add new Execute-SQL task as first task in control flow: Open task properties. Assign destination connection as connection to use. Insert the following SQL as command:   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'ALTER TABLE ? NOCHECK CONSTRAINT ALL' GO   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'DELETE FROM ?' GO   Save task. Add new Execute-SQL task as last task in control flow: Open task properties. Assign destination connection as connection to use. Insert the following SQL as command:   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'ALTER TABLE ? CHECK CONSTRAINT ALL' GO   Save task Now connect first Execute-SQL task with first Data Flow task and last Data Flow task with second Execute-SQL task. Now move to Package Explorer tab and change connections under Connection Managers folder. Make source connection to use database PLAIN. Make destination connection to use database CORRECT. Save package and rebuilt the project. Update package using SQL Server Management Studio. Some hints: Make sure you take the package from solution folder because it is saved there now. Don’t overwrite existing package. Use numeric suffix and let Management Studio to create a new version of package. Now you are done with your package. Run it to test it and clean out all the errors you find. TRUNCATE vs DELETE You can see that I used DELETE FROM instead of TRUNCATE. Why? Because TRUNCATE has some nasty limits (taken from MSDN): “You cannot use TRUNCATE TABLE on a table referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint; instead, use DELETE statement without a WHERE clause. Because TRUNCATE TABLE is not logged, it cannot activate a trigger. TRUNCATE TABLE may not be used on tables participating in an indexed view.” As I am not sure what tables you have and how they are used I provided here the solution that should work for all scenarios. If you need better performance then in some cases you can use TRUNCATE table instead of DELETE. Conclusion My conclusion is bitter this time although I am very positive guy. It is A.D. 2010 and still we have to write stupid hacks for simple things. Simple tools that existed before are long gone and we have to live mysterious bloatware that is our only choice when using default tools. If you take a look at the length of this posting and the count of steps I had to do for one easy thing you should treat it as a signal that something has went wrong in last years. Although I got my job done I would be still more happy if out of box tools are more intelligent one day. It's a solution you open up and there are a bunch of broken unit tests. Fixing them walks you through the steps of learning the language. • Mess up between mysql server and phpmyadmin

  0 down vote favorite After I installed XAMP on my ubuntu 12.10 it was working fine with mysql. I could start mysql- sudo mysql -uroot -p. I connet it using 127.0.0.1:3306 Recently I installed phpmyadmin. When I start it it shows access denied. I got solution from web: sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop sudo /etc/init.d/proftpd stop sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start Now I start phpmyadmin it starts but now I could not connect with mysql on terminal. Additionally phpmyadmin database does not shows all existing databse on mysql. CAn anyone tell me what's going on here? I am using ubuntu 12.10

• How should I replan A*?

  I've got a pathfinding boss enemy that seeks the player using the A* algorithm. It's a pretty complex environment, and I'm doing it in Flash, so the search can get a bit slow when it's searching over long distances. If the player was stationary, I could just search once, but at the moment I'm searching every frame. This takes long enough that my framerate is suffering. What's the usual solution to this? Is there a way to "replan" A* without redoing the entire search? Should I just search a little less often (every half-second or second) and accept that there will be a little inaccuracy in the path?
