  • Is porting a Windows application to Mac worth it ?

    I have a C# Windows application that sells for $35, and fairly regularly receive requests for a version for OS X too. I don't have any experience with Mac so far though, and so am not sure exactly how much work that would involve and if it would be worth it. If anyone's been in a similar position, it'd be very helpful to know: Roughly how many more (%) sales can you expect by porting to Mac ? Would you say it's worth the investment of a new Macbook Pro and the time of learning and porting to Objective-C ? Thanks in advance.

  • How to Estimate Needed Bandwidth for New Web Application?

    I am working on a brand new SaaS web application and need to estimate the initial bandwidth usage. Since the site doesn't exist yet, and since this is my first endeavor of this sort, I'm not really sure how much bandwidth to estimate to begin with. We will be using Linux, Apache, PHP and Mysql. The content will be generated dynamically. There will be images as part of the site design but user's will also upload images that will be displayed and documents that will be stored for download at later times. We'd like to be able to support 500,000 page loads per month with estimated image loads being about two to three times that.

  • GWT application throws an exception when run on Google Chrome with compiler output style set to 'OBF

    I'd like to know if you guys have faced the same problem I'm facing, and how you are dealing with it. Sometimes, a small and harmless change in a Java class ensues strange errors at runtime. These errors only happen if BOTH conditions below are true: 2) the application is run on Google Chrome, and 1) the GWT JavaScript compiler output style is set to 'OBF'. So, running the application on Firefox or IE always works. Running with the output style set to 'pretty' or 'detailed' always works, even on Google Chrome. Here's an example of error message that I got: "((TypeError): Property 'top' of object [object DOMWindow] is not a function stack" And here's what I have: - GWT 1.5.3 - GXT 1.2.4 - Google Chrome 4 and 5 - Windows XP In order to get rid of this Heisenbug, I have to either deploy my application without obfuscation or endure a time-consuming trial-and-error process in which I re-implement the change in slightly different ways and re-run the application, until the GWT compiler is happy with my code. Would you have a better idea on how to avoid this?

  • How to control Time zone formatting in System.Xml.Serialization or during application execution?

    I'm developing a C# .Net Application that is executing on a system located in the Central Time Zone. The application gets information from a third party using an API they provide. I have used the WSDL to produce the code that my application access the API with...their reporting API allows you to define a start date and end date for the report. These are C# DateTime fields and XSD:dateTime. Now when I set the start date and end dates and allow the API to create the SOAP messages the dates don't always include a Time Zone unless I set the date fields using the ToLocalTime method; however, the method will create the DateTime fields in the Central Time Zone (CST) but I need to have it create these fields in the Pacific Time Zone (PST). If I set my machine time to PST all is good...but of course that causes other time issues. What methods can I use to control the formatting of the DateTime? Alternatively, is there a application setting that can be set in C# that allows timezone control?

  • How do I destruct data associated with an object after the object no longer exists?

    I'm creating a class (say, C) that associates data (say, D) with an object (say, O). When O is destructed, O will notify C that it soon will no longer exist :( ... Later, when C feels it is the right time, C will let go of what belonged to O, namely D. If D can be any type of object, what's the best way for C to be able to execute "delete D;"? And what if D is an array of objects? My solution is to have D derive from a base class that C has knowledge of. When the time comes, C calls delete on a pointer to the base class. I've also considered storing void pointers and calling delete, but I found out that's undefined behavior and doesn't call D's destructor. I considered that templates could be a novel solution, but I couldn't work that idea out. Here's what I have so far for C, minus some details: // This class is C in the above description.     I'm using Ad Hoc distribution to send preview/beta version of my iPhone apps to customers for approval. I'm always sending a zipped application and mobileprovision files. Sometimes however I encountered situation when nothing in the application changed but we needed to add a new device for testing. I've added a device in Provisioning portal and assigned it to a provisioning profile my application uses for ad hoc distribution. I've downloaded new mobileprovision file and imported it to xcode now the question is do I need to rebuild the application to enable the app on a new device or would it be enough to just send old build with updated mobileprovision file?

  • Graphics glitch when drawing to a Cairo context obtained from a gtk.DrawingArea inside a gtk.Viewport.

    I am trying to redraw the part of the DrawingArea that is visible in the Viewport in the expose-event handler. However, it seems that I am doing something wrong with the coordinates that are passed to the event handler because there is garbage at the edge of the Viewport when scrolling. Can anyone tell what I am doing wrong?   • Android: restful API service

    Hey, I'm looking to make a service which I can use to make calls to a web based rest api. I've spent a couple of days looking through stackoverflow.com, reading books and looking at articles whilst playing about with some code and I can't get anything which I'm happy with. Basically I want to start a service on app init then I want to be able to ask that service to request a url and return the results. In the meantime I want to be able to display a progress window or something similar. I've created a service currently which uses IDL, I've read somewhere that you only really need this for cross app communication, so think these needs stripping out but unsure how to do callbacks without it. Also when I hit the post(Config.getURL("login"), values) the app seems to pause for a while (seems weird - thought the idea behind a service was that it runs on a different thread!) Currently I have a service with post and get http methods inside, a couple of AIDL files (for two way communication), a ServiceManager which deals with starting, stopping, binding etc to the service and I'm dynamically creating a Handler with specific code for the callbacks as needed. I don't want anyone to give me a complete code base to work on, but some pointers would be greatly appreciated; even if it's to say I'm doing it completely wrong. I'm pretty new to Android and Java dev so if there are any blindingly obvious mistakes here - please don't think I'm a rubbish developer, I'm just wet behind the ears and would appreciate being told exactly where I'm going wrong.   • Got an idea for an application, but part of it is patented, any suggestions?

    so I've been working on developing an idea for an application that I think has the potential to be successful, however after some initial research I've discovered that at least part of my ideas are covered by a patent out there, the patent in particular is held by a really large company (I don't want to give away specifics for fear I'd draw their attention for sure). I'm debating a few options: 1) Develop patents around my ideas that don't conflict and maybe approach the company in question for a license exchange 2) Just approach them for a license outright 3) Just develop around it anyways and hope for the best :-p What have other people done in these situations? Are companies generally willing to grant patent licenses? Are they willing to grant them at reasonable prices? Thoughts?

  • How to start a process from another application and then open a terminal to that process in gnu scre

    I'd like to be able to launch a process from a GUI application (right now I'm thinking specifically of letting an eclipse user -- possibly via a plugin -- click a button to launch a build using my organization's build system). I don't want this process to stop when I stop the parent application, and I want to be able to "switch into it" later, as though I launched it from a command line. I've seen GNU screen described as good for most of what I'm asking for, but I'm not sure about the "launch the process from another application" part. Can this be done if the GUI application was itself launched from within screen? Can this be done if it wasn't? I'd be very interested in seeing how! Update: Prepending "screen" to a command line looks like a good way to start a process in screen from a shell, but I'm trying to find a way to do this without being taken straight into that session. I want to "send" the command to a screen session, where it will be started in a new window in that session.

  • CAN Controller DLL with Java Application. Unable to open CAN port.

    I am creating a Java application that controls a Controller Area Network (CAN) controller via a vendor-supplied can.dll file. can.dll contains a function bool openPort(DWORD memAddr) that allows the application to establish connection with the CAN controller. I wrote a C++ test application, loaded can.dll via LoadLibrary and found this function to be working as it should, i.e. it returns true. However, in my Java application, calling this via JNI or JNA returns false. I hope someone can help me with this problem as I have been trying to fix this problem for more than a week. Thanks :) JL

    So I can create launchers in a quicklaunch thing on the kde desktop. The launchers are easy to create, and work most of the time. What I haven't figured out, is how to pass arguments to the applications that I want to launch. I want to launch the firefox profile manager and I also want to add a launcher for an emacsclient frame. For emacsclient, I've tried these: emacsclient -c "emacsclient -c" 'emacsclient -c' None of them work. When I click the launcher, the tiny emacs logo appears attached to the mouse pointer, and stays there for at least a couple of minutes, but no new frame opens. So, how can I actually open an emacsclient frame, or any other application with an argument from quicklaunch?

  • Why page_load is called twice in my web application?

    Hi, I have already gone through some of the posts in many websites regarding page_load being called twice but my problem is little bit different from those. My problem is with the landing page of my web application. Initially in my website page_load for the landing page was getting called twice every time when it is loaded. Since my application is an upgraded one (from VS 2003 to VS 2005/2008), I commented the "this.load" event in InitializeComponent. Now it works fine, when user first logs in, into my web application. But then, whenever user navigates to this page from any other page in my application, page_load gets called twice. Does anybody have any idea about why this could be happening. I tried to track the call stack for this, but VS 2008 was showing that this was getting called from external code. Also, I am using frames in my web application. I wonder if this problem has anything to do with frames. Any help is deeply appreciated. Regards, Hari

    Hi, I'm creating an application using GWT 2.0.1; it complies 6 computations and runs well in all browsers except IE8, it shows a blank page( but can be viewed in IE8 compatibility mode) . When I add the line in my gwt.xml <set-property name="user.agent" value="ie8" / > it compiles just 1 permutation and the application displays fine in IE8. However if I add the line lt;set-property name="user.agent" value="ie8,gecko,gecko1_8,safari,opera" /gt; it compiles all permutations, but the application still cannot be viewed in IE8 but runs properly in all other browsers. Is there any other method to ensure my application will run in all browsers ?

  • application custom stock icons not working in ubuntu unity top panel menu (aka appmenu) ("Menus Have Icons" ON)

    I recently noticed that in ubuntu unity the top menu of my apps does not show the (custom) icons I added to the gtk stock, but only the basic gtk stock icons. This happens only since the top menu is displayed in the unity top panel (appmenu) and not in the application window. In place of the correct custom icons I see "gtk-missing-image". On my apps toolbars and other menus those icons are displayed properly, the problem is only with the top menu. This happens either with pygtk2 (e.g. http://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/) and gobject introspection (e.g. http://www.giuspen.com/nautilus-pyextensions/). I use gtk ui manager after integrating the stock icons this way: factory = gtk.IconFactory() pixbuf = gtk.gdk.pixbuf_new_from_file(filepath) iconset = gtk.IconSet(pixbuf) factory.add(stock_name, iconset) factory.add_default() If anybody solved this problem please help.
