  • When should one let an application crash because of an exception in Java (design issue)?

    In most cases, it is possible to catch exceptions in Java, even unchecked ones. But, it is not necessarily possible to do something about it (for example out of memory). For other cases, the issue I am trying to solve is a design principle one. I am trying to set-up a design principle or a set of rules indicating when one should give up on an exceptional situation, even if it is detected in time. The objective is trying to not crash the application as much as possible. Has someone already brainstormed and communicated about this? I am looking for specific generic cases and possible solutions, or thumb-rules. UPDATE Suggestions so far: Stop running if data coherency can be compromised Stop running if data can be deleted Stop running if you can't do anything about it (Out of memory...) Stop running if key service is not available or becomes unavailable and cannot be restarted If application must be stopped, degrade as gracefully as possible Use rollbacks in db transactions Log as much relevant information as you can Notify the developers

  • Making it GREAT! Oracle Partners Building Apps Workshop with UX and ADF in UK

    Yes, making is what it's all about. This time, Oracle Partners in the UK were making great looking usable apps with the Oracle Applications Development Framework (ADF) and user experience (UX) toolkit. And what an energy-packed and productive event at the Oracle UK, Thames Valley Park, location it was. Partners learned the fundamentals of enterprise applications UX, why it's important, all about visual design, how to wireframe designs, and then how to build their already-proven designs in ADF. There was a whole day on mobile apps, learning about mobile design principles, free mobile UX and ADF resources from Oracle, and then trying it out. The workshop wrapped up with the latest Release 7 simplified UIs, Mobilytics, and other innovations from Oracle, and a live demo of a very neat ADF Mobile Android app built by an Oracle contractor. And, what a fun two days both Grant Ronald of ADF and myself had in running the workshop with such a great audience, too! I particularly enjoyed the wireframing and visual design sessions interaction; and seeing some outstanding work done by partners. Of note from the UK workshop were innovative design features not seen before and made me all the happier that developers were bringing their own ideas from the consumer IT world of mobility, simplicity, and social to the world of work apps in a smart way within an enterprise methodology too.  Partner wireframe exercise. Applying mobile design principles and UX design patterns means you've already productively making great usable apps! Next, over to Oracle ADF Mobile with it! One simple example from the design of a mobile field service app was that participants immediately saw how the UX and device functionality of the super UK-based app Hailo app could influence their designs (the London cabbie influence maybe?), as well as how we all use maps, cameras, barcode scanners and microphones on our phones could be used in work. And, of course, ADF Mobile has the device integration solutions there too! I wonder will U.S. workshops in Silicon Valley see an Uber UX influence (LOL)! That we also had partners experienced with Oracle Forms who could now offer a roadmap from Forms to Simplified UI and Mobile using ADF, and do it through through the cloud, really made this particular workshop go "ZING!" for me. Many thanks to the Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) team for organizing this event with us, and to the representatives of the Oracle Partners that showed and participated so well.     I'm looking for an alternative to www.squarespace.com. Squarespace is great, but leans slightly toward the social networking industry. I'm looking for a simple way to build Web sites for small businesses. The criteria is the following: Requires no programming knowledge. No software to download - all design and maintenance can be done via browser Has a good selection of templates and layouts Essentially I'm looking for the features within Typepad.com or WordPress.com, but instead of focusing around a blog it would help build a more traditional Web site.

  • Why can't I open my Access application in design mode?

    I have been given an Access 2007 application (mainly VB code) that I need to modify. It has been locked down for production, so the toolbars and so forth are not visible. However, it is a .mdb file, not .mde, so in theory it should be possible to get into design mode by holding Shift while opening it. But that method has only worked a total of three times out of the (probably) 60 or 70 times I've tried. I realize now that I should have enabled the toolbars while I had it open, but unfortunately hindsight doesn't get me anywhere now. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem? Is it my own fault, or the application's, or Access's?

  • What is a good partitioning design/scheme for a multi-boot *nix system?

    I'm planning to install Debian on my server. I would like to design the partitioning scheme in such a way, that I could install one or more other *nix distributives on that. So, reading many articles I think this scheme could be a good one for the initial idea of multi-boot: /grub /swap /LVM VG1 (for OS1) -> /boot (LV1) / (LV2) /tmp (LV3) /var ... /var/log /home /LVM VG2 (for OS2) -> /boot / /tmp /var /var/log /home ... (other distros) /LVM VG0 (for data) -> /data (LV1) But I'm confused a little bit now: what should be the labels for these partitions (unique or not) and what should be the mounting points looking as (/home (OS1) mounted to /home as well as /home (OS2)...)?

  • Is it possible to run JavaScript and also edit image maps using Design View in Dreamweaver?

    I'm using Dreamweaver CS5.5 for an HTML prototype that is built with image-mapped screenshots. I am using JavaScript to dynamically include the appropriate main image, and the navigation is done with image maps. Is it possible to have the Dreamweaver "Design View" run JavaScript initially (which will set the main image) and also allow me to edit the image maps in place (so I can see them placed over the correct main image)? I found some references to the "Live View" feature, which runs JavaScript successfully, but I cannot see or edit image maps in "Live View".

  • How to convert int to char in JSP expression language?

    I need to display incremented single characters to denote footnotes in a table of data in a JSP. In Java I would normally have a char variable and just increment it, or convert an int to a char by casting it (e.g. (char)(i + 97) to convert a 0-based index to a-z). I can't figure out how to do this in expression language short of writing my own JSTL function. Does anyone know how to convert an int to char in EL? Or how to increment a char variable in EL? Or possibly even a better technique to do what I'm trying to do in JSP/EL? Example of what I need to be able to produce: a mydata b myotherdata ... a first footnote b second footnote

  • How do you match only valid roman numerals with a regular expression?

    Thinking about my other problem, i decided I can't even create a regular expression that will match roman numerals (let alone a context-free grammar that will generate them) The problem is matching only valid roman numerals. Eg, 990 is NOT "XM", it's "CMXC" My problem in making the regex for this is that in order to allow or not allow certain characters, I need to look back. Let's take thousands and hundreds, for example. I can allow M{0,2}C?M (to allow for 900, 1000, 1900, 2000, 2900 and 3000). However, If the match is on CM, I can't allow following characters to be C or D (because I'm already at 900). How can I express this in a regex? If it's simply not expressible in a regex, is it expressible in a context-free grammar? Thanks for any pointers!

    I have this method: public void DoSomething<T>(Expression<Func<T, object>> method) { } If this method is called like this: DoSomething(c => c.SomeMethod(new TestObject())); ... how do I get the value of the parameter that was passed into SomeMethod()? If the parameter is a value type, this works: var methodCall = (MethodCallExpression)method.Body; var parameterValue = ((ConstantExpression)methodCall.Arguments[0]).Value; However, when I pass in a reference type, methodCall.Arguments[0] is a MemberExpression, and I can't seem to figure out how to write code to get the value out of it.

  • .Net Regular expression - how to do an exact match exclusion on a full string?

    I need a .Net regular expression that matches anything OTHER than the exact full string match specified. So basically: ^Index$ ... is the only exclusion I care about. Strings can start with, finish with or contain "Index", but not match exactly. My brain doesn't seem to be working today and I'm failing to work this one out. EDIT The answer MUST be via the pattern itself, as I am passing an argument to a third party library and do not have control over the process other than via the Regex pattern.

    Hi I have an enum declared like this: typedef enum { Top, Bottom, Center } UIItemAlignment; In my code I try to use it like this: item.alignment = UIItemAlignment.Top; I get an error like this: " Expected expression before 'UIItemAlignment' " If I use only: item.alignment = Top; everything works fine but why do I get this error if I try to use it the other way? _alignment is an NSInteger and it has a property declared like this @property (readwrite) NSInteger alignment; and I synthesized it in my implementation file. So my question is, why do I get this error?

    I am checking a field if it is Latin Characters or not. var foreignCharacters = $("#foreign_characters").val(); var rlatins = /[\u0000-\u007f]/; if (rlatins.test(foreignCharacters)) { alert("This is Latin Characters"); } else { alert("This is non-latin Characters"); } This works well, but I would like to change it so when I enter any non-latin characters, such as chinese characters, along with a space(which is within that range I am using currently) it will still say it is non-latin characters. How can I change the regular expression I have to do that?

    I'm using GNU Make 3.81, and I have the following rule in my Makefile: jslint : java org.mozilla.javascript.tools.shell.Main jslint.js mango.js \ | sed 's/Lint at line \([0-9]\+\) character \([0-9]\+\)/mango.js:\1:\2/' This works fine if I enter it directly on the command line, but the regular expression does not match if I run it with "make jslint". However, it works if I replace \+ with \{1,\} in the Makefile: jslint : java org.mozilla.javascript.tools.shell.Main jslint.js mango.js \ | sed 's/Lint at line \([0-9]\{1,\}\) character \([0-9]\{1,\}\)/mango.js:\1:\2/' Is there some special meaning to \+ in Makefiles, or is this a bug?

    I read all of similar questions in SO but none seem to be an answer. Situation is simple. I have a ASP.NET webpage, In a VB code behind file I have the following line: iRendProvider = ddlProvider.SelectedItem.Value where iRendProvider is integer and ddlProvider is a dropdownlist. I put a breakpoint at the above line and code stops there. Now in the immdediate window in I type: ? ddlProvider.SelectedItem.Value I get "Expression cannot be evaluated at this time." If I step over iRendProvider = ddlProvider.SelectedItem.Value To the next line and I type ? iRendProvider , I see the correct value in the immediate window. Question is why this error and how to see contents of ddlProvider.

  • Regular Expression; Find whether a line contains any word with more than X characters.

    Hi, I am trying to use a Validator on a ASP.NET site and need to find whether the Street Address textbox contains a valid entry. Entries with words that are longer than X characters (in this case 25, with no punctuation or spaces) will cause the HTML on a printed A4 page to not wrap properly and therefore not to confrom to certain sizes correctly pushing the margins off. For a street address I want to match that something like "201 Long Road" is valid but "235 ReallyLongAndNarrowWindingRoadBesideTheRiver Street" is invalid. Using a Microsoft .Net Regular Expression Validator I need to know what the RegEx pattern might be. I think if it does find a match the Validator will fire correctly however if there is no match the Validator won't fire and the Update button (in this case) won't fire. Since Street addresses can contain Capital Letters and numbers etc. it will need to accomodate for that and also Spaces, Commas, Semi-Colons and Colons and Hyphens are valid characters too. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am really stuck with this problem. Thanks, David
