• How do I force apt-get to install a package that will not install due to a bug introduced by Ubuntu 11.10?

  Ubuntu 11.10 separated out python-profiler from the Python standard library due to licensing philosophies. (According to what I could Google, correct me if I'm wrong.) This is an active bug since October for 11.10. I have Python 2.7.2 installed, so the dependency errors are wrong. 'apt-get check' does not resolve the problem. • What is the point of dynamic allocation in C++?

  I really have never understood it at all. I can do it, but I just don't get why I would want to. For instance, I was programming a game yesterday, and I set up an array of pointers to dynamically allocated little enemies in the game, then passed it to a function which updates their positions. When I ran the game, I got one of those nondescript assertion errors, something about a memory block not existing, I don't know. It was a run-time error, so it didn't say where the problem was. So I just said screw it and rewrote it with static instantiation, i.e.: while(n<4) { Enemy tempEnemy = Enemy(3, 4); enemyVector.push_back(tempEnemy); n++; } updatePositions(&enemyVector); And it immediately worked perfectly. Now sure, some of you may be thinking something to the effect of "Maybe if you knew what you were doing," or perhaps "n00b can't use pointers L0L," but frankly, you really can't deny that they make things way overcomplicated, hence most modern languages have done away with them entirely. But please-- someone -- What IS the point of dynamic allocation? What advantage does it afford? Why would I ever not do what I just did in the above example?

• I know how to program, and how to learn how to program, but how/where do you learn how to make systems properly?

  There are many things that need to be considered when making a system, let's take for example a web based system where users log in and interact with each other, creating and editing content. Now I have to think about security, validation (I don't even think I am 100% sure what that entails), "making sure users don't step on each others feet" (term for this?), preventing errors in many cases, making sure database data doesn't become problematic through unexpected... situations? All these things I don't know how or where to learn, is there a book on this kind of stuff? Like I said there seems to be a huge difference between writing code and actually writing the right code, know what I mean? I feel like my current programming work lacks much of what I have described and I can see the problems it causes later, and then the problems are much harder to solve because data exists and people are using it. So can anyone point me to books or resources or the proper subset of programming(?) for this type of learning? PS: feel free to correct my tags, I don't know what I am talking about. Edit: I assume some of the examples I wrote apply to other types of systems too, I just don't know any other good examples because I've been mostly involved in web work.

• Can't (re)install lazarus

  I had Lazarus installed (from website, not USC), while upgrading to 13.10 and after that, it posted some error message (which I can't remember) at every start. I decided it shouldn't suffer, so I started reinstalling it, but it didn't work. then I thought I'll start all over, and deleted and purged everything. But it still would not install. I found a similar, very similar question to mine here: Cant correctly install Lazarus I tried everything said there: sudo dpkg -l | grep "^rc" returned some packages: since sudo apt-get -f brought up the apt-get help message, and sudo apt-get -f install did nothing, I went ahead and manually purged every broken package, which seemed to bring me forward, since it removed the entries in sudo dpkg -l | grep "^rc". When I was done I tried it again, since it didn't work I rebooted, no change. this is the error message I get on the attempt to install the first package (fpc-2.6.2): root@Someone-PC:~# dpkg -i /home/someone/Desktop/fpc_2.6.2-0_amd64\ \(3\).deb (Reading database ... 242209 files and directories currently installed.) • Unity3d web player fails to load textures

  I'm having a problem with Unity3d Web Player. I have developed a project and succesfully deployed it in a web app. It works with absolutely no problem on my PC. This app is to be installed on two identical machines. I have installed them in both and it only works properly in one. The issue I have is on a computer it fails to properly load the models and textures, so the game runs but instead of the models I can only see black rectangles on a blue background. It has the same problem with all browsers and I get no errors either by the player or by JavaScript. The only difference between these computers is that one that has the problem is running on Windows 8.1 and the other one on Windows 8 only. Could this be the cause of the issue? It works fine on my computer with Windows 8.1. However both of the other computers have specs that are significantly lower than mine. I have already searched everywhere and it seems that it has to do with the individual games, however I think it may have to do with the computer itself because it runs properly in the other two. The specs on the computes I'm installing the app on are as follows: Intel Celeron 1.40 GHz, 2GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics If anybody could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful I forgot to mention, I'm running Unity Web player 4.3.5 and the version on the other two computers is 4.5.0

• How to get sharing options to stick - ubuntu 12.04

  I'm having a really hard time trying to get my sharing set up on my 12.04 system. I've tried both desktop version and server - I'm a bit of a linux n00b, so I need a GUI, command line is beyond me and no time to learn it (not till after I get the shares setup, at least) My problem is, whenever I try to set permissions in Nautilus, it just reverts back to the default which is to "none" Basically when I choose an option... it doesn't stick. I can create shares, and it asks me if I want to add permissions automatically - but they do not stick either. When I go to look at the shared folders in Windows (or even on my Android Phone, or Mac) it gives me permissions errors and doesn't let me log in, despite me clicking "allow guest access" I have no idea what to do or where to go. I've tried searching forums and google, and I've tried everything I come across - no avail. I've even tried Mint builds to see if it's different, no change there either. Please help! I really want to setup a server to share my media files and do backups in my house. Thanks for your help!

• Site failing randomly - could it be Cloudflare or something weird in the JS?

  I've been working on a simple site that uses javascript to fade through some fullscreen background images as well as some other simple animations. I've tested the site on Chrome, Safari, FF and Opera on OSX, IE8+ on Win7 and Chrome & FF on Ubuntu and everything looks as I'd expect it to. However, I've had reports of the site failing to load (stops at the stage where the background fades up) on Safari and Chrome on OSX and Win. I can't replicate this on any setup so I'm finding it impossible to troubleshoot. Google's instant preview shows the site fine as does most of the options at browsershots.org so I'm really scratching my head. I'm running the site's traffic through Cloudflare and I'm wondering whether anyone can see (or knows from other sites) why Cloudflare might be mangling the JS or causing a problem somehow (I don't get any errors in the JS error console). Of course, if you can replicate the problem on your machine and can suggest an area to look at that would be amazing but I'm hoping that, like me, you don't see any problem with the site! • Added resolution not working after upgrading to 12.04

  After upgrading, my screen resolution (added by xrandr comands on the start) did not work like before. Messages appear showing some errors (that i have never had in 11.10). This only erase the window message. It's been sayd that ##It's a normal buggy and well know problem for Pc's with Intel integrated video cards.## The new version of gnome-settings-daemon stores its configuration information in dconf rather than gconf. I tryed something, but the problem persist. This is what i did. Install the dconf-tools package, and then run dconf-editor. In the tree on the left, navigate org - gnome - settings-daemon - plugins - xrandr. Uncheck the active checkbox. restart your XServer (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) (It didn't worked out for me, but it may be helpful to someone)

Why? Because any file I create on or move to the partition is automatically marked as executable. The problem is that there is no way of changing that through nautilus. I cannot uncheck the "Allow executing file as program" option. The noexec option doesn't help, unfortunately. It only prevents nautilus from displaying the "run" or "read" dialog but doesn't change the executable flag. Is there any way I can fix this?

  i recently tried installed java 7 on ubuntu 12.04 and i think i screwed something up I followed the instructions given here. First you need to remove openjdk for this run the following command from your terminal sudo apt-get purge openjdk* Now you can install Java7 by adding the following repository: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eugenesan/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer Now everytime i install a new program i get the following error: Download done. sha256sum mismatch jdk-7u3-linux-x64.tar.gz Oracle JDK 7 is NOT installed. dpkg: error processing oracle-java7-installer (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Setting up python-central (0.6.17ubuntu1) ... • Configure Unity Lenses and what they search

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10. I've read about a lense (ppa:pydave/unity-lenses) that you can replace with the original files and folders lense, so you can search all your files. Instead of the current which only search used/recently used files and programs. I couldn't get this to work with 12.10, got a bunch of errors when I tried adding the ppa. I would like to set up a lens that can search all my files and folders (from all of my 3 hdd's), one that search through my videos (ability to specify which folders) and the same for music. So basically I would like to set up three specific lenses that each get a set of specified folders that they search through. If this is not possible, is there atleast a way to configure the current Files and Folders lense to ignore certain folders? I don't like when my dash shows files that I don't want to be shown. I should add that I'm completely new to Ubuntu and I apologize beforehand if this information could easily be found. But I wasn't able to find something like this. Edit: I found out how I can use the Privacy application to ignore what I want, so that's sorted now. Sorry for not researching it more. But my question regarding the lenses still stand. All help is greatly appreciated.

I can't change google_page_url for each page. What should I do? This error is appearing only on my sidebar/navigation ad units. Is using google_page_url = document.location; fine?

• Windows 8 BIOS - Boot Ubuntu from External HDD

  My laptop came pre-loaded with Windows 8 64-bit (only storage device is a 128 GB SSD). Since it is my school laptop/I've heard creating a Linux partition alongside Windows 8 is not very wise I installed Ubuntu onto my external hard drive. I have a 500GB external HDD with the following partitions: Main Partition - NFTS - ~400 GB Extension Partition / - ext2 - ~25gb /home - ext2 - ~30gb swap - ext2 - 10gb /boot - ? - 10gb ? = not sure of partition Using the PenDriveLinux installer, I created a LiveUSB version of Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) on a 4GB USB drive. Using that, I installed Ubuntu onto the external hard-drive, without any errors (or at least none that I was notified of). Using the BIOS settings, I changed the OS-loading order so that it is in this order: My External USB HDD Windows Boot Loader Some other things Therefore, Ubuntu should load from my hard drive first, but it doesn't. Also, my hard drive is in working condition, and it turns on when BIOS starts (there is a light indicator). When I start my laptop, it goes directly to Windows 8 (I have the fast startup setting disabled as well). So, is there any way for me to set it up so that when my HDD is connected, it will automatically load Ubuntu? Thanks in advance!

• 12.04 update crash, now cannot boot

  Boot now freezes the system at the "Ubuntu purple screen" with the 5 dots under it. I cannot even CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to an alternate console. Have to push reset button on computer to reboot. After the 12.04 update crash, the system would boot, but I had no icons and no launch bar and errors about missing dependencies. CTRL-ALT-F1 and ran apt-get -f install and it appeared to get the missing packages. I followed with a apt-get update; apt-get upgrade. It appeared to install all of the remaining 12.04 update packages. Rebooted to same blank screen - no icons, but got a compiz error. In console I tried "unity --reset" rebooted ... Nothing ... It's dead in the water. Tried to boot into Recovery Mode - black screen - I cannot even CTRL-ALT-Del - have to push reboot button. Fortunately, I have Mint on another partition and I can access the broken 12.04 partition. Ideas? I can back up all of my folders using Mint, but I would hate to have to do a new install.

  There was a problem upgrading to Firefox 13. This error kept returning: /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb W: Waited for dpkg --assert-multi-arch but was not there - dpkgGo (10: There are no "child" processes). Now it seems that there is some problem with dpkg and I can't install anything from software center. I already tried to clean previous packages with sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf and then sudo apt-get update, it didn't work. EDIT: I don't have the necessary expertise to understand why what I did worked and what was causing the conflict, but anyway, since there was a problem with firefox-globalmenu:, I went to synaptics package manager, I removed this particular package and reinstalled it. After that, I was able to install Firefox from synaptics and also any other applications from software center. However, still there was a problem, when running sudo apt-get update, the following kept returning: Failed to get gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_binary-i386_Packages Verification code hash doesn't match. E: Some archives index failed at being downloaded. They have been ignored, or older copies are used instead. So I typed sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf in terminal and then again sudo apt-get update and everything is fine now. I did this before an answer was posted, anyway I agree the problem was that particular package and its removal. So I'll mark the below answer as accepted.

• Restore Failure from Ubuntu One

  Had to do a reinstall of Ubuntu 12 after 13.10 failed. Lost all my data, but I remembered that I had data backed up to Ubuntu One. It recognized my previous backups but I got errors and a restore failure when I went to restore the data. This is what I got. Can anyone make heads or tails of this? I still don't have my data. • Install on Acer Aspire 4752

  I am at my wits end with this computer. I bought and Acer Aspire 4752 with a fully loaded version of Windows 7 on it. I prefer Ubuntu so I began to install 14.04 from USB. Got the error: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment. So I tried a different USB stick, same error. Tried different versions of Ubuntu, got the same error. I've used startup disk creator and Unetbootin to make start USB boot devices. I can boot with the USB drive and run Ubuntu that way. I even checked the hard drive using the tools in Ubuntu. Everything was fine, except it said the hard drive was hot. I tried a different hard drive. Got same error above. I ran a test with mem86, everything was fine. No matter what I do, using the USB gives me the Errno5 error. I then switched to using DVDs. Now I keep getting an uncompression error when installing Ubuntu 14.04 or 12.04. I can't figure out for the life of me why I get nothing but errors. Can anyone help?

• Installing BURG (NO MBR!)

  I'd like to install BURG but I don't want it to overwrite my MBR. That's because I've got two bootloader in my system : 1) Default Windows 7 bl in my MBR 2) Grub in /dev/sda2 With the first power button, it will boot as Grub is not installed, so it simply loads Windows, with the second button it boots from /dev/sda2, loading Grub and then Kubuntu. Now I want to replae Grub with Burg. I've installe Burg with burg-install /dev/sda2 --force because I don't want my MBR to be overwritten (pressing the first power button MUST load Windows and avoid showing any sign of Linux things). Setup was completed without errors, and everything seems to work fine : if I open burg-manager it loads my settings, allowing me to change them and to test everything with burg-emu (that works as I want to). So, everything seems fine, Burg's installed, I've changed my settings but.. If I use the second power button, it still loads Grub! (Even a different version from the default Kubuntu one). So, here's the question : How can I replace GRUB that's on /dev/sda2 with BURG and WITHOUT writing it to my MBR? Thanks :)

• Cryptswap boot error - can't mount?

  I believe i have my swap set up but am not sure because on start up it says that it is something along the lines of "could not mount /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 M for manual S for skip". But it appears to be mounted? I have already tried this solution with no success.
