How to fix Ubuntu 12.04.3 boot to black screen full of errors in white text, after upgrading on dell inspiron 1501

I am running a Dell Inspiron 1501 I use Linux only. No Microsoft or Apple operating systems (or really anything closed-source). I've only been using Linux for a little over a year but I'm starting to gain a comfortable level of familiarity with the system and terminology. I've been having some issues with Quantel Quetzal and Raring Ringtail, especially with older hardware, so I opted to install Ubuntu 12.04.3 Precise Pangolin on the Inspiron 1501. I checked my MD5 sum after downloading my ISO and all was good. I have in fact used this iso/dvd to install Precise Pangolin successfully on a few other systems (some of which are even older than this laptop). Install goes fine. The wireless card doesn't work out of the box but this is a known issue which is fairly easy to fix. So, first thing I did was open up a terminal and run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade which, part way through, crashed (I assume lightdm and possibly X) and took me to a black screen filled with white lines of text that were either errors or just the ouputs of commands. The reason I say that is because I was unable to gleam any useful information from the output on the screen. I did take a picture however and will post a link. After that, every time I boot the system it goes right to that black screen posting all the error messages or output in white text. I never get a purple Ubuntu splash, so from what I can tell after reading this wiki article: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen That means that after the kernel is selected, it is unable to correctly implement the settings it needs. If the purple splash never shows, the frame buffer was never set correctly right? This leads me to believe that it could be a kernel issue? The wiki suggested to try and pinpoint the issue by rolling back kernels until I find one that works. Is this my best option? I think I'm going to give it a try anyways and will let everyone know if I am able to solve the issue this way. I have since done a few reinstalls and some trouble-shooting including a couple hours scouring the net for anyone with any kind of similar issue. Most of the issues I could find involved getting a black screen after login and none of them said anything about any information output on this black screen. My reinstalls have taught me that there is no issue updating, but as soon as I run sudo apt-get upgrade my system goes to the black screen and every time I boot it up it does the same thing. The only way to fix is by reinstall. I never get any ability to log in. After a hard power off to the laptop (because I cannot use ctrl+alt+del to reboot) when it boots again it goes to the grub boot menu and I can select between regular boot, recovery mode and the two memtest options. I never tried the memtest options but the other two both lead to the same black screen. Some people having a black/blank screen issue claim to have fixed it by using 12.10 or 13.04 but I believe they were having a different issue where they got a black/blank screen after logging in. I think I will still give these images a try, but mostly figured I would just wait another day or two for 13.10. Other things I figured I would try from the following three articles: After logging in, there's a black screen and my cursor, nothing else! in Ubuntu 12.10 Black Screen on Login After Upgrading to 12.04 I can't get to the login screen include opening a terminal using ctrl+alt+f1 and trying a variety of reseting unity, x settings, lightdm (or switching to gdm); but I doubt this will work or that I will even be able to access a terminal. I'm pretty sure the whole system is stuck after it loads the last line on the black screen. I will try these things and post more information when I have. Hopefully someone has an idea in the meantime and I will keep checking back trying to find a solution. Thank you. Here are 3 different pictures of the error message. JDeveloper does not recognize existing subversion working directory

Just a quick note about an issue where JDeveloper no longer recognized an existing subversion working directory. Symptom: JDeveloper Versioning menu offers to Version an Application that is already versioned in svn. Cause: The repository url contained in the hidden .svn folders of the working directory is no longer valid. Solution: Determine the correct url for the Subversion repository and update the .svn working directory.Fix the url contained in the svn folders of the working directory using the svn switch command. Example: In a shell change directory to the Application folder. Run the svn info command to confirm the current settings. $ svn info Path: . URL: http://192.168.1.128/repos/jdeveloperrepo/AsyncExamples/BPELCallAsync/trunk Repository Root: http://192.168.1.128/repos/jdeveloperrepo Repository UUID: 3dc5eb88-3001-0010-8d6e-fd6f73825647 Revision: 145 Node Kind: directory Schedule: normal Last Changed Rev: 145 Last Changed Date: 2012-06-07 07:15:56 -0700 (Thu, 07 Jun 2012) In this case, the IP address in the repository URL is incorrect, the svn server is located at 192.168.56.1 Note: The IP Address currently set is displayed after the Project Name in the Application Navigator. See the screen snapshot above. Run the svn switch command with the --relocate option Provide as much of the urls as necessary to correctly rewrite the url from current to new. For example, to change the repository server address from 192.168.1.128 to 192.168.56.1 $ svn switch --relocate http://192.168.1.128 http://192.168.56.1 . (Note the trailing period in the above command) When the url is correct, JDeveloper should recognize the Subversion Working Directory.

Windows 8 for productivity?

At long last I’ve started using Windows 8. I boot from a VHD on which I have installed Office, Visio, Visual Studio, SQL Server, etc. For a week, now, I’ve been happily writing code and documents and using Visio and PowerPoint. I am, very much, a ‘productivity’ user rather than a content consumer. I spend my days flitting between countless windows and browser tabs displayed across dual monitors. I need to access a lot of different functionality and information in as fluid a fashion as possible. With that in mind, and like so many others, I was worried about Windows 8. The Metro interface is primarily about content consumption on touch-enabled screens, and not really geared for people like me sitting in front of an 8-core non-touch laptop and an additional Samsung monitor. I still use a mouse, not my finger. And I create more than I consume. Clearly, Windows 8 won’t be viable for people like me unless Metro keeps out of my hair when using productivity and development tools. With this in mind, I had long expected Microsoft to provide some mechanism for switching Metro off. There was a registry hack in last year’s Developer Preview, but this capability has been removed. That’s brave. So, how have things worked out so far? Well, I am really quite surprised. When I played with the Developer Preview last year, it was clear that Metro was unfinished and didn’t play well enough with the desktop. Obviously I expected things to improve, but the context switching from desktop to full-screen seemed a heavy burden to place on users. That sense of abrupt change hasn’t entirely gone away (how could it), but after a few days, I can’t say that I find it burdensome or irritating. I’ve got used very quickly to ‘gesturing’ with my mouse at the bottom or top right corners of the screen to move between applications, using the Windows key to toggle the Start screen and generally finding my way around. I am surprised at how effective the Start screen is, given the rather basic grouping features it provides. Of course, I had to take control of it and sort things the way I want. If anything, though, the Start screen provides a better navigation and application launcher tool than the old Start menu. What I didn’t expect was the way that Metro enhances the productivity story. As I write this, I’ve got my desktop open with a maximised Word window. However, the desktop extends only across about 85% of the width of my screen. On the left hand side, I have a column that displays the new Metro email client. This is currently showing me a list of emails for my main work account. I can flip easily between different accounts and read my email within that same column. As I work on documents, I want to be able to monitor my inbox with a quick glance. The desktop, of course, has its own snap feature. I could run the desktop full screen and bring up Outlook and Word side by side. However, this doesn’t begin to approach the convenience of snapping the Metro email client. Consider that when I snap a window on the desktop, it initially takes up 50% of the screen. Outlook doesn’t really know anything about snap, and doesn’t adjust to make effective use of the limited screen estate. Even at 50% screen width, it is difficult to use, so forget about trying to use it in a Metro fashion. In any case, I am left with the prospect of having to manually adjust everything to view my email effectively alongside Word. Worse, there is nothing stopping another window from overlapping and obscuring my email. It becomes a struggle to keep sight of email as it arrives. Of course, there is always ‘toast’ to notify me when things arrive, but if Outlook is obscured, this just feels intrusive. The beauty of the Metro snap feature is that my email reader now exists outside of my desktop. The Metro app has been crafted to work well in the fixed width column as well as in full-screen. It cannot be obscured by overlapping windows. I still get notifications if I wish. More importantly, it is clear that careful attention has been given to how things work when moving between applications when ‘snapped’. If I decide, say to flick over to the Metro newsreader to catch up with current affairs, my desktop, rather than my email client, obligingly makes way for the reader. With a simple gesture and click, or alternatively by pressing Windows-Tab, my desktop reappears. Another pleasant surprise is the way Windows 8 handles dual monitors. It’s not just the fact that both screens now display the desktop task bar. It’s that I can so easily move between Metro and the desktop on either screen. I can only have Metro on one screen at a time which makes entire sense given the ‘full-screen’ nature of Metro apps. Using dual monitors feels smoother and easier than previous versions of Windows. Overall then, I’m enjoying the Windows 8 improvements. Strangely, for all the hype (“Windows reimagined”, etc.), my perception as a ‘productivity’ user is more one of evolution than revolution. It all feels very familiar, but just better.

Stumbling Through: Visual Studio 2010 (Part II)

I would now like to expand a little on what I stumbled through in part I of my Visual Studio 2010 post and touch on a few other features of VS 2010. Specifically, I want to generate some code based off of an Entity Framework model and tie it up to an actual data source. Im not going to take the easy way and tie to a SQL Server data source, though, I will tie it to an XML data file instead. Why? Well, why not? This is purely for learning, there are probably much better ways to get strongly-typed classes around XML but it will force us to go down a path less travelled and maybe learn a few things along the way. Once we get this XML data and the means to interact with it, I will revisit data binding to this data in a WPF form and see if I cant get reading, adding, deleting, and updating working smoothly with minimal code. To begin, I will use what was learned in the first part of this blog topic and draw out a data model for the MFL (My Football League) - I dont want the NFL to come down and sue me for using their name in this totally football-related article. The data model looks as follows, with Teams having Players, and Players having a position and statistics for each season they played: Note that when making the associations between these entities, I was given the option to create the foreign key but I only chose to select this option for the association between Player and Position. The reason for this is that I am picturing the XML that will contain this data to look somewhat like this: <MFL> <Position/> <Position/> <Position/> <Team> <Player> <Statistic/> </Player> </Team> </MFL> Statistic will be under its associated Player node, and Player will be under its associated Team node no need to have an Id to reference it if we know it will always fall under its parent. Position, however, is more of a lookup value that will not have any hierarchical relationship to the player. In fact, the Position data itself may be in a completely different xml file (something Id like to play around with), so in any case, a player will need to reference the position by its Id. So now that we have a simple data model laid out, I would like to generate two things based on it: A class for each entity with properties corresponding to each entity property An IO class with methods to get data for each entity, either all instances, by Id or by parent. Now my experience with code generation in the past has consisted of writing up little apps that use the code dom directly to regenerate code on demand (or using tools like CodeSmith). Surely, there has got to be a more fun way to do this given that we are using the Entity Framework which already has built-in code generation for SQL Server support. Lets start with that built-in stuff to give us a base to work off of. Right click anywhere in the canvas of our model and select Add Code Generation Item: So just adding that code item seemed to do quite a bit towards what I was intending: It apparently generated a class for each entity, but also a whole ton more. I mean a TON more. Way too much complicated code was generated now that code is likely to be a black box anyway so it shouldnt matter, but we need to understand how to make this work the way we want it to work, so lets get ready to do some stumbling through that text template (tt) file. When I open the .tt file that was generated, right off the bat I realize there is going to be trouble there is no color coding, no intellisense no nothing! That is going to make stumbling through more like groping blindly in the dark while handcuffed and hopping on one foot, which was one of the alternate titles I was considering for this blog. Thankfully, the community comes to my rescue and I wont have to cast my mind back to the glory days of coding in VI (look it up, kids). Using the Extension Manager (Available under the Tools menu), I did a quick search for tt editor in the Online Gallery and quickly found the Tangible T4 Editor: Downloading and installing this was a breeze, and after doing so I got some color coding and intellisense while editing the tt files. If you will be doing any customizing of tt files, I highly recommend installing this extension. Viewing the NetBeans Central Registry (Part 2)

Jens Hofschröer, who has one of the very best NetBeans Platform blogs (if you more or less understand German), and who wrote, sometime ago, the initial version of the Import Statement Organizer, as well as being the main developer of a great gear design & manufacturing tool on the NetBeans Platform in Aachen, commented on my recent blog entry "Viewing the NetBeans Central Registry", where the root Node of the Central Registry is shown in a BeanTreeView, with the words: "I wrapped that Node in a FilterNode to provide the 'position' attribute and the 'file extension'. All Children are wrapped too. Then I used an OutlineView to show these two properties. Great tool to find wrong layer entries." I asked him for the code he describes above and he sent it to me. He discussed it here in his blog, while all the code involved can be read below. What's New in Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2?

A year is a long time in the IT industry. Since the last VirtualBox feature release, which was a little over a year ago, we've seen: new releases of cool new operating systems, such as Windows 8, ChromeOS, and Mountain Lion; we've seen a myriad of new Linux releases from big Enterprise class distributions like Oracle 6.3, to accessible desktop distros like Ubuntu 12.04 and Fedora 17; and we've also seen the spec of a typical PC or laptop double in power. All of these events have influenced our new VirtualBox version which we're releasing today. Here's how... Powerful hosts One of the trends we've seen is that as the average host platform becomes more powerful, our users are consistently running more and more vm's. Some of our users have large libraries of vm's of various vintages, whilst others have groups of vm's that are run together as an assembly of the various tiers in a multi-tiered software solution, for example, a database tier, middleware tier, and front-ends. So we're pleased to unveil a more powerful VirtualBox Manager to address the needs of these users: VM Groups Groups allow you to organize your VM library in a sensible way, e.g. by platform type, by project, by version, by whatever. To create groups you can drag one VM onto another or select one or more VM's and choose Machine...Group from the menu bar. You can expand and collapse groups to save screen real estate, and you can Enter and Leave a group (think iPad navigation here) by using the right and left arrow keys when groups are selected. But groups are more than passive folders, because you can now also perform operations on groups, rather than all the individual VMs. So if you have a multi-tiered solution you can start the whole stack up with just one click. Autostart Many VirtualBox users run dedicated services in their VMs, for example, running a Wiki. With these types of VM workloads, you really want the VM start up when the host machine boots up. So with 4.2 we've introduced a cross-platform Auto-start mechanism to allow you to treat VMs as host services. Headless VM Launching With VM's such as web servers, wikis, and other types of server-class workloads, the Console of the VM is pretty much redundant. For some time now VirtualBox has offered a separate launch mechanism for these VM's, namely the command-line interface commands VBoxHeadless or VBoxManage startvm ... --type headless commands. But with 4.2 we also allow you launch headless VMs from the Manager. Simply hold down Shift when launching the VM from the Manager. It's that easy. But how do you stop a headless VM? Well, with 4.2 we allow you to Close the VM from the Manager. (BTW best to use the ACPI Shutdown method which allows the guest VM to close down gracefully.) Easy VM Creation For our expert users, the New VM Wizard was a little tiresome, so now there's a faster 2-click VM creation mode. Just Hide the description when creating a new VM. Powerful VMs As the hosts have become more powerful, so are the guests that are running inside them. Here are some of the 4.2 features to accommodate them: Virtual Network Interface Cards With 4.2, it's now possible to create VMs with up to 36 NICs, when using the ICH9 chipset emulation. But with great power comes great responsibility (didn't Obi-Wan say something similar?), and so we have also introduced bandwidth limiting to prevent a rogue VM stealing the whole pipe. VLAN tagging Some of our users leverage VLANs extensively so we've enhanced the E1000 NICs to support this. Processor Performance If you are running a CPU which supports Nested Paging (aka EPT in the Intel world) such as most of the Core i5 and i7 CPUs, or are running an AMD Bulldozer or later, you should see some performance improvements from our work with these processors. And while we're talking Processors, we've added support for some of the more modern VIA CPUs too. Powerful Automation Because VirtualBox runs atop a fully blown operating system, it makes sense to leverage the capabilities of the host to run scripts that can drive the guest VMs. Guest Automation was introduced in a prior release but with 4.2 we've revamped the APIs to allow a richer and more powerful set of operations to be executed by the guest. Check out the IGuest APIs in the VirtualBox Programming Guide and Reference (SDK). Powerful Platforms All the hardcore engineering that has gone into 4.2 has been done for a purpose and that is to deliver a fast and powerful engine that can run almost any x86 OS because of the integrity of the virtualization. So we're pleased to add support for these platforms: Mac OS X "Mountain Lion" Windows 8 Windows Server 2012 Ubuntu 12.04 (“Precise Pangolin”) Fedora 17 Oracle Linux 6.3 Here's the proof: We don't have time to go into the myriad of smaller improvements such as support for burning audio CDs from a guest, bi-directional clipboard control, drag-and-drop of files into Linux guests, etc. so we'll leave that as an exercise for the user as soon as you've downloaded from the Oracle or community site and taken a peek at the User Guide. Hiding elements based on last closed element jquery script

Hi my question is, how can I make this jquery script close all previously opened children when entering a new parent? At the moment it traverses thru all the tree structure fine, but switching from one parent to another does not close the previous children, but rather only the each individual parents elements as a user browses. Hi Guys, I'm new to this but here goes. I have been developing this website http://www.panelmaster.co.uk and i have managed to solve the majority of design problems but one! If you take a look at the site in IE the right column seems to drop down and is not aligned with the right and centre column. I am using the function "getDays()" to get the available days list and stored the data inside daysWithRecords, and final the UI datepicker's function "beforeShowDay()" called the function "checkAvailability()" to set the days. the variable "daysWithRecords" was declared inside Igtomw = function(elem , options) and was initialized inside the function getDays() I am using the function "initialWatchHistory()" to initialization and render the JQuery UI datepicker in the web. My problem is the function "checkAvailability()" cannot see the variable "daysWithRecords".The firebug prompts me that "daysWithRecords" is "undefined". this is the first time I write my first plugin. Blocking access to websites with objective-C / root privileges in objective-C

I am writing a program in Objective-C (XCode 3.2, on Snow Leopard) that is capable of either selectively blocking certain sites for a duration or only allow certain sites (and thus block all others) for a duration. The reasoning behind this program is rather simple. I tend to get distracted when I have full internet access, but I do need internet access during my working hours to get to a number of work-related websites. Clearly, this is not a permanent block, but only helps me to focus whenever I find myself wandering a bit too much. At the moment, I am using a Unix script that is called via AppleScript to obtain Administrator permissions. It then activates a number of ipfw rules and clears those after a specific duration to restore full internet access. Simple and effective, but since I am running as a standard user, it gets cumbersome to enter my administrator password each and every time I want to go "offline". Furthermore, this is a great opportunity to learn to work with XCode and Objective-C. At the moment, everything works as expected, minus the actual blocking. I can add a number of sites in a list, specify whether or not I want to block or allow these websites and I can "start" the blocking by specifying a time until which I want to stay "offline". However, I find it hard to obtain clear information on how I can run a privileged Unix command from Objective-C. Ideally, I would like to be able to store information with respect to the Administrator account into the Keychain to use these later on, so that I can simply move into "offline" mode with the convenience of clicking a button. Even more ideally, there might be some class in Objective-C with which I can block access to some/all websites for this particular user without needing to rely on privileged Unix commands. A third possibility is in starting this program with root permissions and the reducing the permissions until I need them, but since this is a GUI application that is nested in the menu bar of OS X, the results are rather awkward and getting it to run each and every time with root permission is no easy task. Anyone who can offer me some pointers or advice? Please, no security-warnings, I am fully aware that what I want to do is a potential security threat.

Can't create a fullscreen WPF popup

Using WPF .NET 4.0 in VS2010 RTM: I can't create a fullscreen WPF popup. If I create a popup that is sized 50% width and 100% height everything works fine, but if I try to create a "full screen" popup sized to 100% width and height it ends up displaying at 100% width and 75% height... the bottom is truncated. Note: The width and height are actually being expressed in pixels in code, I'm using percent to make the situation a little more understandable... It "feels" like there is some sort of limit preventing the area of a popup from exceeding ~75% of the total area of the screen. jQuery AutoComplete select firing after change?

I'm using the jQuery UI AutoComplete control (just updated to jQuery UI 1.8.1). Whenever the user leaves the text box, I want to set the contents of the text box to a known-good value and set a hidden ID field for the value that was selected. Additionally, I want the page to post back when the contents of the text box are changed. Currently, I am implementing this by having the autocomplete select event set the hidden id and then a change event on the text box which sets the textbox value and, if necessary, causes a post back. If the user just uses the keyboard, this works perfectly. You can type, use the up and down arrows to select a value and then tab to exit. The select event fires, the id is set and then the change event fires and the page posts back. If the user starts typing and then uses the mouse to pick from the autocomplete options though, the change event fires (as focus shifts to the autocomplete menu?) and the page posts back before the select event has a chance to set the ID. PHP HTML CSS Beginner USE CASE / SWITCH / IF ELSE? Need advice...

Building a website using a PHP based Ecommerce product Magnto. The problem I have is that I want to use tabbed navigation. My idea was to use CSS to show the TAB over the relevant Navigation menu item based on the URL. However, one URL always changes, so I wanted to somehow use an ifelse statement. Android GPS timeout

I'm writing an Android application that, among other things, needs to send the current GPS coordinates to a server when the user tells it to. From a context menu, I run the service below. The service is a LocationListener and requests updates from the LocationManager. When it gets a location (onLocationChanged()), it removes itself as a listener and sends the coordinates off to the server. All of this is working. However, if GPS coordinates are not quickly available, my service just keeps running until it gets some. It holds up the UI with a progress dialog, which is annoying. Worse, if the user has moved since starting the service, the first GPS coordinates might be wrong and the app will send bad data to the server. I need a timeout on the service. Is there a good way to do that? I'm not very experienced with threads. I think I can run a Runnable in the onStartCommand() method that will somehow count down 30 seconds and then, if there is no GPS result yet, call my service's stop() method. Does that sound like the best way to do this? Alternatively, is it possible to tell if the GPS cannot get a fix? How would I go about doing that? What am I trying to do: export data to csv. I have a form which allows user to select the format (from a drop down menu). So based on the selection of the format the ouput is displayed using a ajax call. Works fine for html but when I select the format as csv I don't see any pop up on the screen (asking to save or open the file) and neither any file gets downloaded directly. I tried using Fastercsv (but the problem is that I don't see any pop up asking me whether I want to save or open the file) and CSV::Writer where I get this error message on the console. popView from UITabBarController inside UINavigationController

Hi, I'm building an application based on the Utility template from Xcode, to which I have added some more views. My application structure would be as follows: MainView (the app menu) Flip-side view (a calculator) UINavigationController Settings view viewDiDLoad: UITabBarController - Tab1 view (options) - Tab2 view (information text) I can navigate correctly from my MainView to my Flip-side view, which is also the root view of the Navigation Controller. From my Flip-side view, I push a second view of my Navigation Controller (Settings view) that is configured to show an UITabBarController, with two tabs, as soon as it loads (with viewDidLoad). If I remove the UITabBarController, I can return with no problems to my Flip-side view using "popViewController" from my Settings view. The problem comes if I load the UITabBarController in viewDiDLoad in my Settings view... the tabs work perfectly, but I'm not able to return to my Flip-side view (root view of the Navigation Controller) anymore. I CAN return if I use the Navigation Bar of the Navigation Controller, but I want to configure my own buttons and have the Navigation Bar hidden. So far I've tried the following methods: [self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES]; [self.navigationController popToRootViewControllerAnimated:YES]; [self.navigationController popToViewController:FlipSideViewController animated:YES]; But they don't seem to work. The first two just do nothing (the screen remains as it was), and the third one does not recognize the "FlipsideViewController" (maybe because it's a delegate of the MainViewController?). Is there a way to check what is exactly doing the "back" button of the Navigation Bar if I activate it? Should I be using delegates? Can I call a popViewController method in my Settings view from any of the two Tab views? jQuery doesn't work in IE8?

Hi, I am working on a site here: mfm.treethink.net All the jquery works fine in Firefox, Chrome and Safari but on IE8 it gives me errors and the banner at the top doesn't work (which uses the crossSlide jQuery plugin) and as well the image rollovers don't work with the colour change. IE8 is telling me that the errors are on lines 53, 134 and 149 in the source, all of those lines are where the jquery function is declared. $(document).ready(function(){ I am running jquery 1.4. Oddly enough, the other piece of jQuery I have on that page works, the artist browse/select menu on the right. But the banner and image rollovers don't. How do I add a toolbar to a region with ExtJS

I have a border layout in ExtJS, The north region contains some HTML, but also needs to contain a toolbar like this... So i've managed to get the border layout set up, added the html to the North Region of the layout, but I can't find any workable examples of how to implement a tool bar. I have found lot's of examples of toolbars on their own, but I've not got the luxury or learning ExtJs thoroughly so it's all greek to me. I suspect there's a way to define a tool bar outside of the cumbersome JSON style flow of creating a layout and somehow attaching it to the region, and I'm hoping it's relativley simple to do. Managing database connections in an Android Activity

I have an application with a ListActivity that uses a CursorAdapter as its adapter. The ListActivity opens the database and does the querying for the CursorAdapter, which is all well and good, but I am having issues with figuring out when to close both the Cursor and the SQLiteDatabase. The way things are handled right now, if the user finishes the activity, I close the database and the cursor. However, this still ends up with the DalvikVM warning me that I've left a database open - for example, if the user hits the "home" button (leaving the activity in the task's stack), rather than the "back" button. If I close them during pause and then re-query during resume, then I don't get any errors, but then a user cannot return to the list without it requerying (and thus losing the user's place in the list). By this I mean, the user can click on any item in the list and open a new activity based on it, but will often want to hit "back" afterwards and return to the same place on the list. If I requery, then I cannot return the user back to the correct spot. What is the proper way to handle this issue? I want the list to remain scrolled properly, but I don't want the VM to keep complaining about unclosed databases. Again, the issue is that when I hit home I get leak errors. Yet, after going home, I can go back to the app and find my list again - cursor fully intact.
