• Why are my Windows 7 updates continuously failing?

  I'm an advanced level user here with an odd issue. I have two Windows Updates that are failing to install, every single time. I'm getting a mysterious "Code 1" error on both updates, an error for which I'm having difficulty finding a solution. The updates in question are: Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243) System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2011] Because these updates are failing, the Shut Down button in my start menu always has the shield icon next to it, indicating that "new" updates will be installed on shut down. But, of course, they'll fail and when the PC is restarted, the shield icon is still there. This is a custom PC build and the OS was installed fresh, not an upgrade from a previous version. I've been running this system for about four months. Windows Updates aside, the system is usually quite stable.

• Logging communication between two VMs

  Hi, I'm trying to set up "malware lab" described in this paper. So far, I've set up Windows guest system, adding one Host-only Network adapter, and setting this (sorry if the names aren't exactely correct, I don't have an english language version): - IP Address - 10.0.0.3 - Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway - not set - Preferred DNS - 10.0.0.4 - Alternate DNS - not set And a Linux guest system - Ubuntu 9.04 - with two Network adapters - Bridged (eth0) and Host-only (eth1), and setting eth1 IP Address to 10.0.0.4, leaving the eth0 to be set by DHCP. Same when I try to ping the Linux system from within the Windows. But when I try to access any web page from within the Windows system, I would expect that this action should get logged by iptables. But thing is, I don't see any of that kind of lines in log file (If I am looking in the right place, that is. :) It is at /var/log/messages, isn't it?). So, what do you think might be the problem here? I should note, that this is the first time I'm using linux, so don't expect ANY working knowledge of Linux at all... :) Also, since english is not my mother tongue, feel free to point out any gramatical mistakes... :) Thanks for any advice.

• upload process times out for different time zones

  I have an inhouse(NY) app that cients can upload files to. Usually uploads go pretty quickly for most clients but this particularly cient in the UK always have problems with uploads. not sure if they get any errors but since we log all exceptions, we see this...Error: System.Web.HttpUnhandledException: Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. ---> System.Net.WebException: The operation has timed out at System.Web.Services.Protocols.WebClientProtocol.GetWebResponse(WebRequest request) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.HttpWebClientProtocol.GetWebResponse(WebRequest request) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.Invoke(String methodName, Object[] parameters) at ... This shouldn't even be an issue because since we noticed they have had this issue before so we bumped up these to maxRequestLength="2097151" executionTimeout="14400". Further investigating this error, i read that it could be a thread timeout since the default is 20minute. A worker process with process id of serving application pool was shutdown due to inactivity. Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes. A new worker process will be started when needed. Problem is I am not entirely sure if that really is the case as all other cients mostly North American, have no issues but then their uploads don't seem to go beyond 80mb and the UK client have done a 700mb upload before that i know of. We have tested 750mb before and the whole process took about 15min for upload and processing. Any help on what the real issue here might be? Thanks.

• Accessing the partitions on an VLM volume

  Suppose you have an LVM volume /dev/vg0/mylv. You have presented this as a virtual disk to a virtualised or emulated guest system. During installation the guest system sees it as /dev/sda and partitions it into /dev/sda{1,2,5,6} and completes the installation. Now at some point you need to access those filesystems from within the host system, without running the guest system. fdisk sees these partitions just fine: # fdisk -l /dev/vg0/mylv Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/vg0/mylv1 2048 684031 340992 83 Linux /dev/vg0/mylv2 686078 20969471 10141697 5 Extended /dev/vg0/mylv5 686080 8290303 3802112 83 Linux /dev/vg0/mylv6 8292352 11980799 1844224 83 Linux However, the devices such as /dev/vg0/mylv1 do not actually exist. I guess that because they're within an LV, the OS does not recognise this type of nesting by default. Is there any way I can prod Linux so that /dev/vg0/mylv1 or equivalent appears and thus becomes mountable within the host system? I understand that it's possible with qemu-nbd, and will use this if necessary. However, I was hoping for something more direct if possible, rather than simulating a network block device and attaching that.

In .NET 2/3.5, this worked fine. Since .NET 4.0 however, running a client of the service in the Visual Studio debugger results in the exception "Inheritance security rules violated by type: '(my subtype of ValidationAttribute)'. Derived types must either match the security accessibility of the base type or be less accessible." • Enable Proxy Authentication for normal windows application.

  my company's internet works on proxy server with Authentication(i.e. Browser prompts with window for username/password everytime i tried to access any web page). Now i have some windows application which tries to access internet(like WebPI/Visual Studio 2008 for rss feeds), but as they are unable to popup the the authentication window, they are unable to connect with internet with error: (407) Proxy Authentication Required . Here the exception is VS2008, first time it always fails to load rss feeds on startup page, but when i click on the link, it shows authentication window and everything works fine after that. my question is: How can i configure normal windows application(through app.config/app.manifest file) accessing web to able to show the authentication window or provide default credentials. For explore this furthor, i have created one console application on VS2008 which tries to serach something on google and display the result on console.   I am using AddHandler to wire a function to a control's event that I dynamically create: Public Sub BuildControl(EventHandler as System.Delegate) dim objMyButton as new button AddHandler objMyButton.Click, EventHandler end Sub This code is generating a run-time exception stating: Unable to cast object of type 'MyEventHandlerDelegate' to type 'System.EventHandler' What am I not understanding about System.Delegate even though AddHandler takes as an argument of type "System.Delegate"? What Type does "EventHandler need to be to cast to a type that AddHandler can accept? Thanks for your help!

  I understand that System.DirectoryServices is a "layer above" System.DirectoryServices.Protocols and abstracts some of the complexity. Are there any other advantages, performance or otherwise, to using System.DirectoryServices.DirectorySearcher vs. System.DirectoryServices.Protocols.SearchRequest for LDAP queries from .NET. What criteria would cause you to use one approach over the other?
