    Let's say you have a company running a lot of C/C++, and you want to start planning migration to new technologies so you don't end up like COBOL companies 15 years ago. For now, C/C++ runs more than fine and there is plenty dev on the market for it. But you want to start thinking about it now, because given the huge running code base and the data sensitivity, you feel it can take 5-10 years to move to the next step without overloading the budget and the dev teams. You have heard about D, starting to be quite mature, and Go, promising to be quite popular. What would be your choice and why?

  • c# 4.0 - best way to refactor a block of "If (something is Type) {}" statements?

    I've got some code that looks like this, public void ResetControls(Control controlOnPage) { if (controlOnPage is TextBox) { ResetTextBoxControl(controlOnPage); } if (controlOnPage is MediaPicker) { ((MediaPicker)controlOnPage).Media = null; } if (controlOnPage is RelatedContentPicker) { ((RelatedContentPicker)controlOnPage).RelatedContentCollection = null; } ... ... foreach (Control child in controlOnPage.Controls) { ResetControls(child); } } The idea behind it is that I can pass a page to the method and it'll recursively reset all the controls on it to their default states - in the case of MediaPicker and RelatedContentPicker, these are user controls that I've created. FXCop warns me "Do Not Cast Unnecessarily" for this code - but I'm unsure how to rewrite it to make it better. Any ideas?

  • What is the best way of doing this? (WCF 4)

    I have a multith-threaded, continusly running application that connects with multiple devices via TCP/IP sockets and exposes a set of WCF API's for controlling, monitoring and reporting on these devices. I would like to host this on IIS for the ususal reasons of not having to worry about re-starting the app in case of errors. So the issue I have is the main application running in parallel with the WCF Servies. To accomplish this I use the static AppInitialize class to start a thread which has the main applicaiton loop. The WCF services mostly report or control the shared objects with this thread. There are two problems that I see with this approach. One is that if the thread dies, IIS has no clue to re-start it so I have to play some tricks with some WCF calls. The other is that the backrgound thread deals with potentially thousands of devices that are connected permanently (typically a thread per socket connection). So I am not sure if IIS is buying me anything in this case. Another approach that I am thinking is to use WF for the main application that deals with the sockets and host both the WF and my WCF services in IIS using AppFabric. Since I have not use WF or AppFabric I am reaching out to see if this would be good approach or there are better alternative.

  • Best way to have common class shared by both C++ and Ruby?

    I am currently working on a project where a team of us are designing a game, all of us are proficient in ruby and some (but not all) of us are proficient in c++. Initially we made the backend in ruby but we ported it to c++ for more speed. The c++ port of the backend has exactly the same features and algorithms as the original ruby code. However we still have a bunch of code in ruby that does useful things but we want it to now get the data from the c++ classes. Our first thought was that we could save some of the data structures in something like XML or redis and call that, but some of the developers don't like that idea. We don't need anything particularly complex data structures to be passed between the different parts of the code, just tuples, strings and ints. Is there any way of integrating the ruby code so that it can call the c++ stuff natively? Will we need to embed code? Will we have to make a ruby extension? If so are there any good resources/tutorials you could suggest? One approach that I can think of, without modifying the entity is via "auditing" all the inserts/updates, as below, the rollback information captures the data just before the updates/modifications on the entity, so that it can be applied in an order when you need to revert.Please note that changing the entity's schema, is not an option. However, since I live in Argentina I have a Latin American keyboard, that makes everything in Vim pretty slower (to write / to search, I must press Shift+7). Since I don't want to be changing Keyboard layouts all the time (and its pretty difficult to get used to pressing symbols as in an English keyboard), I was wondering if there was a vim plugin (of .vimrc file) that may be useful for international users.   • Would Python's Twisted library be the best case for an observer type pattern?

    hi all, I'm developing a system where a queue will be filled with millions of items I need a process that reads items from the queue constantly and then sends those items out to registered clients. I'm thinking about using twisted for this, having the queue reader be a twisted server listening on a tcp port then clients can connect on that port and when an item is pulled from the queue the server writes it out to all the clients. Does that sound like something that twisted would be ideal for? Does anyone know of any sample code out there that may do something similar? thanks

  • Best way to move a bunch of SQL Server 2005 tables to another Server?

    I've been looking for a way to move a bunch of tables, more than 40, to another server with all the data in them. I've looked around for scripts to generate inserts but so far I'd have to run them once for every table, then copy all the scripts over and then run them on the server. Seems like there is a better way. --Update-- My strategy for doing this may have been for naught. The end script, using MS SQL Server Publishing Wizard and Red Gates SQL Data Compare (excellent tool, btw) results in a file over 1GB. This makes my system plead for mercy and I'm not willing to risk crashing a clients server just opening the file to run it. I may have to rethink this whole thing and break down to just individual per table scripts. I'm not looking forward to that.

    I'm having a miserable time debugging one small function on my new project. Essentially I'm having a user log out via an AJAX call to my log out script on my server called "userfFunctions.php" I'm using AJAX so that I don't have the headache of writing more regex to match my mod_rewrites. Anyway, every so often, it seems as though my Post data just flat out dies and since the PHP is running behind the scenes, I feel like I have no way of finding out where the data flow is being disrupted. I was tempted by SVNx but if I'm honest don't like the idea of using command line at all - much prefer a nice and easy to use GUI.   • What's the best approach to printing/reporting from WPF?

    I have an upcoming project which will have to be able to print simple reports from its data. It'll be WPF-based, and I'm wondering which way to go. I know that WPF introduces its own printing technology (based on XPS) which looks quite easy to use. However, part of me wonders whether it would just be easier to use the ReportViewer control and embed it in a Windows Forms host control, since that will give users the ability to export to a variety of formats as well as print. Has anyone had any experience with printing/reporting from WPF? Which direction would you recommend?
