  • Selectively turning off Devise's flash notices in Rails 3

    The Devise authentication framework uses flash notices everywhere. This makes it easy to integrate with apps but it leads to poor user experience sometimes. I am wondering what's an easy way to selectively turn off some of the Devise flash notices in my Rails 3 app. In particular, I'd like to get rid of the blatantly obvious signed_in and signed_out flashes. Some searching suggested subclassing the session controller or use something like this but I haven't been able to find any simple solutions to this problem.

  • Fastest way to store/retrieve a dictionary - SQL, text file...?

    Hi all, This is a really really super dumb question, so I apologise, but I'd be grateful for some advice. I've got a text file of words and word frequencies. It's very large - theoretically we're talking millions of rows. I just want to retrieve values from the file, and do it as quickly and efficiently as possible (for a web app, in Django). My question is: what is the best way to store and retrieve the values? Should import them into SQL? Or keep the file and use grep? Or put them into a JSON dictionary...? Or some other way? Sorry for the dumb question, would be very grateful for advice!

    Dear Folks, I am trying to sort string column (containing numbers). // SELECT `name` FROM `mytable` ORDER BY `name` ASC +----------+ +-- name --+ +----------+ +-- a 1 ---+ +-- a 12 --+ +-- a 2 ---+ +-- a 3 ---+ You see natural sorting algorithm of Mysql is placing a 12 after a 1 (which is ok for most apps), But I have unique needs, so I want result should be sorted like this. +----------+ +-- name --+ +----------+ +-- a 1 ---+ +-- a 2 ---+ +-- a 3 ---+ +-- a 12 --+ Is it possible with just SQL, or I have to manipulate result-set at application level?   • even small file upload stops activity on apache/rails

    on my rails(2.3.5) app(currently 50-70rpm, maximum response time around 0.7s), uploading even 700k file(using paperclip plugin) locks up the server for web requests for everyone for 2 minutes! (other apps on same server work normally) does anyone have a clue why that might be happening? i am using some mysql transactions which lock the database also if that might be an issue i read http://www.therailsway.com/2009/4/23/uploading-files but it couldn't be locking server for 2 minutes for a small file, could it?!

    Hello, Suppose we have 3 apps - appMain, app1 and app2. Applications 1 and 2 are protected, they have is_secure: true and everything works fine with sfDoctrineGuard plugin. A behavior I want to achieve is when a user is not authenticated, current application to forward him to another one, say appMain with defined module and action. Is that possible? Or can someone tell me where to dig about security mechanisms in symfony?

    I read that PLinq will automatically use non parallel Linq if it finds PLinq to be more expensive. So I figured then why not use PLinq for everything (when possible) and let the runtime decide which one to use. The apps will be deployed to multicore servers and I am OK to develop a little more code to deal with parallelism. What are the pitfalls of using plinq as a default?

    For my resume, I am attempting to add a shortened link to the app that I created. I looked around and found that apple provides a link shortener for iOS apps using the AppStore.com URL. Unfortunately, since my app contains the ² character, I cannot figure out how to link to my app. The long link for my app is: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/squared2/id498133871?mt=8 Also, is there a way to link to an app without having iTunes automatically open (only show the iTunes preview page)?

  • Overriding SetThreadExecutionState

    I am not sure if this belongs on serverfault or superuser. I would like to override SetThreadExecutionState(ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED) to be a no-op. How is this accomplished? Is there some registry setting that can be altered instead of API hooking? Blocking ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED will prevent apps from keeping the monitor powered on. I have an application (likely the antivirus) that is preventing some monitors from entering power-save and I think this function is the culprit.

    Hi, I have need to communicate between two iframes of the same domain, which live inside a parent page on a different domain that I have no control over. This is a Facebook app and the basic layout is this apps.facebook.com/myapp L iframe1 (src='mysite.com/foo') L iframe2 (src='mysite.com/bar') I need frame1 to talk to frame2, but in Opera I can't access window.parent.frames['frame2'] to do the usual cross-domain methods (updating location.hash for example) Is there an alternate way to accomplish this in Opera? Thanks for your help in advance
