• Application crashes when installing on Windows 7 but not on Windows XP

  At my company, we're migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7. We've got 2 home made applications written in C# with the .NET framework 3.5. They use ClickOnce to be installed. We're in the test phase and the installation of these soft crashes on some Windows 7 machines and doesn't on others. The difference between these machines should be the configuration of the policies. The only error message we've got is this one: I tried to find some logs somewhere but there's nothing neither in the Event Viewer nor in the applications log (wich are poorly logged, then I'm not expecting miracle from this side :( ) These applications: work with FTP servers use WCF use old deprecated libraries (as I'm not at work, I'll edit this post when I'll have the info) use nHibernate 2 use LLBLGen use a deprecated Infragistics library export data into Excel files Did you encounter such an issue while migrating? Or do you have an idea where I should investigate on?

• Can anyone recommend a Windows 7 Slate that supports inking for OneNote?

  Hi All, I've been looking for a Windows 7 Slate for many months now that supports inking so I can use Microsoft OneNote. The slate is going to be used specifically to replace my notepad in meetings and I would like to be able to read and ink Word Documents, Excel spreadsheets, and use OneNote as my note taking application. I will also be doing the odd powerpoint presentation on it. I would like a 10" screen and very important is the ability to use a stylus with a fine tip (like a pen). I have been using the HP TC1100 with Windows XP tablet for a few years and even though it's served me well it's time to change. I've seen a few new tablets announced as CES 2011 but they all seem to be capacitive touch (movement with fingers). I'd like something I can use a stylus with a fine tip (like a pen). Any one got any idea on what's out there or what's due in the next month or two?

• Export policy configuration from eTrust ITM 8.1

  Currently we are using the Enterprise AV Solution eTrust ITM 8.1. The licenses are running out in october and we are going to replace eTrust with another AV solution. The eTrust Server is running on Windows Server 2003 SP2 with an MS SQL 2000 Standard Edition. The problem is that we've got many different policy - sets which we have to redefine in the new AV solution. Is there any way with eTrust ITM 8.1 to export the different policies as csv, pdf ... whatever? • How do I set up a working GUEST USER account in Win XP Pro?

  I have two user accounts within my WinXP Pro PC. One I'd like to erase. But I'd also like to setup a GUEST user account. I've already gotten 2-step instructions on how to get rid of the extraneous account: a) use an MS tool called delprof.msi b) manually delete the former users files in Documents & Settings. But I guess my original question was too complex -- kind of like a bill in Congress. So now I am just asking the final part of the question: How do I create a GUEST ACCOUNT -- then define what it will authorize/grant access to? i.e. internet browser(s), specific programs and files etc

• How do I know if I need to backup locally stored emails?

  I am moving a friend's website and emails from the current server to a new one. I don't have much experience working with migrating emails and in the past when moving servers all the emails have disappeared from the users local inbox, eg. MS Outlook. To make my question more clear, How do I know if I have to backup the emails before moving server? as I know sometimes they are stored locally and sometimes they are not. And, how do I know if the emails will remain on the user's machine once I move the information from server to server?

  This questions is about what things I can do to reduce the size that Windows 8 uses. Background For example: At present and with only one programm installed (MS Access 2007) I have a about 15GB of my harddisk space used. I have little space (its a 17 GB partition on a SSD disk). I would like solutions that are like: Remove files not really needed (drivers not actually needed in the system) Help files not really needed (documentation) pagefile.sys (assuming I would have 4GB ram and no real need for swaping) hiberfil.sys (used for hibernate and sleep... I need that. though I would regain about 4GB space) At best I would like to delete mostly files that I would most likely not need. Though I have no good idea where to start there. Since my setup (hardware will not change) I would be willing to delete all the drivers that windows 8 has for hardware I do not have.... The question is about ways to reduce the space that Windows 8 uses.

• Problems installing W2K8 SP2

  Hello - We are having difficulty installing SP2 on a W2K8 SP1 x64 server. When we try to do this through Windows Updates, it runs for about 1 minute and then says that it completed successfully (when clearly it did not). When we run the file manually via the download, the install fails with the following error code: 0x800f0823 I have tried running the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821), but that did not work. Additional info about the server: It is a domain controller, also running MS-Exchange 2007 SP1 (v8.01.0336.000). Any assistance that could be provided would be greatly appreciated. In you need any more info about the server, please let me know! Thanks!

• Asus F5N laptop built-in card reader driver problem

  I have an Asus F5N X50N-AP011C. I have manually installed Windows 7 x64 on it, replacing the original Windows Vista. It also automatically installed a card reader driver, but it can no longer read xD cards. The driver shows in the device manager as "Generic- xD/SDMMC/MS/Pro USB device" (under "drives" - and a drive is also shown in Windows Explorer). The same card reader once used to work with xD cards. I also tried to manually install drivers from this website: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/realtek.htm - the RTS 5158 but it didn't work (it shows as USB device in device manager, but not as a drive in Windows Explorer). Does anyone know what card reader my model has built-in? (I think it's the 5158 but I don't know how to verify that - there's also no hint in the System Information tool, only the driver name is listed under "drives") how it is connected internally? if there is a better Windows 7 x64 driver?

• Windows Server: Do I really need servers in remote locations?

  I have one main site with several servers an a 2008/2012 environment. I have 4 remote sites that are physically close (a few miles apart) and are all connected to the main site by 20meg fiber on a private network. At each of the remote locations I have a windows server that users log in to and where their files and apps are located. There are many considerations to answering this question. But the first thing I am wondering is do I really need a server at each location? Users are just logging in to this server for permissions and a vast majority of my users are only using word, excel and email. I am really interested in figuring out if I need servers at these locations. $3,000 to $4,000 per server every 3-5 years, licensing, administration... I know there are other considerations - speed, redundancy, if my link to the main site goes down the users have nothing. But I just am not convinced I need servers at these locations.

  Does Microsoft have any problems with HOW I USE SQL Server Standard Edition 2008? I plan on using it to aggregate my clients various data sources and report on them (using the whole stack - SSIS, DB, Analysis Services and Reporting Services) via the web. I don't want to run into any issues with being accused of "re-selling" services / features when I'm not allowed to, etc. In essence, I'm charging people to build them solutions based on / using MY licensed copy and then giving them access to the final products. (reports, etc) It seems straightforward enough - but who knows with MS... (BTW, Licensed by processor / not CAL)

  Is there an easy way to open a file as read-only from Windows Explorer? My inmediate interest is in a Microsoft Access file. I am doing some sanity checks in old MS Access databases and I see that their date is automatically updated when I open them. I don't like this, since it will look like all the old files have been modified today. I am working with Windows XP. Update: As Yoda said, "Do, or do not. There is no try." In my case, it was "do not". I ended up copying the entire (big) folder tree to MyDocuments, and then opening all the databases from there.

• Dialog boxes font is missing in Windows 7

  About 3 years ago I messed up my laptop with some virus removal software. It's obviously changed the registry settings and the text in dialogue boxes in the control panel, run box, etc. is the wrong size. See image:http://i.stack.imgur.com/SlFFU.jpg I've tried changing the MS Shell Dlg registry values to different fonts and restarting. I've made sure that I have the fonts SSERIFE.FON and SERIFE.FON on my system and that they are correctly referenced in the registry. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'd like to be able to see all of the options in the dialog boxes! Cheers

• Objective-C vs JavaScript loop performance

  I have a PhoneGap mobile application that I need to generate an array of match combinations. In JavaScript side, the code hanged pretty soon when the array of which the combinations are generated from got a bit bigger. So, I thought I'll make a plugin to generate the combinations, passing the array of javascript objects to native side and loop it there. To my surprise the following codes executes in 150 ms (JavaScript) whereas in native side (Objective-C) it takes ~1000 ms. Does anyone know any tips for speeding up those executing times? When players exceeds 10, i.e. the length of the array of teams equals 252 it really gets slow. Those execution times mentioned above are for 10 players / 252 teams. • Merged rows in column, bottom row fixed height

  I've been struggling some time now with a specific problem using Tables in MS Word (2010). I have a table with 2 rows and 2 columns and the last column, the rows are merged. Now it can happen that this last cell will expand, and I would like to have the last row in the first column to be of a fixed height and the first row has to expand. What happens now is that the last row expands and the first row has a "fixed" height. • Hardware needed for 2000 users? [closed]

  I have school assignment that is fairly well defined, requiring us to come up with a plan for an environment serving dynamic web applications to 2000 users, and should be able to scale up to six thousand. I have done plenty of research as far as load balancing, redundancy, UPSs, etc, but am having a hard time figuring out how much hardware is actually needed in the way of physical servers, ram, processing power, etc. The assignment states that the server will have a lot of dynamic code, email, and a database are required, all utilizing the appropriate microsoft service (MS SQL, Exchange, IIS). I already plan on splitting them out on to separate servers, but can't even fathom the hardware requirements of something that large scale. Could someone with experience weight in on this, or point me two some good articles?

• Can Google App users view Exchange users public calendars and contacts?

  My company currently uses MS Exchange 2003 for company email, contacts, and calendars. We have approximately 150 users. Construction industry. I would like to look into migrating from Exchange to Google Apps. It will be an easier sell to the powers that be if we can migrate certain smaller departments first successfully than an entire company move. I would like to first migrate our field superintendents who are usually out of the office working remotely. Approx 30 users. Will Google App users be able to see our Exchange user's calendars and vice versa? How about public folders? Anyone's migration story is much appreciated. Thank you.

• Control Windows 8 with a tablet

  It seems much of Windows 8 is based on the idea that it will be running on tablets, and touch screen PCs. I like this, but I don't have a W89 tablet, or a touch PC yet. I'm running W8 on a laptop, and am wondering if there's any way of using my iPad2 as a touch interface with metro? Or another options that'd be nice is if there's a input device similar to Apple's "Magic Trackpad" that would allow me to use hand gestures instead of a mouse cursor when in metro apps. I've seen some cool videos of MS Smart Glass and it would seem that the capabilities are there. But it may just be too early on to do this? I'm not sure.

• Filter email view in Lotus Notes

  From MS Outlook I am used to have an input field above my list of mails where I can type in a filter string such that every mail not matching this string vanishes. I remember that once - by accident (pressing a weird combination of keys because the window I was actually working in lost focus) - I got something very similar in Lotus Notes. So I think there must be something like this out there, but unfortunately I cannot find it anymore. Does somebody know how to get this kind of functionality in Lotus Notes? Thanks!

I am in the middle of applying to a MS certified vendor/reseller to OEM thise as part of a product I am selling. The scaled-down OS is what we need - rather than a full-blown server platform and we don't want a client OS. I just can't find anyone who can tell me how to get it or even find anyone who has seen it. Anyone have details about how to get it or have you ever used it?

  Few days ago, I wrote about SQL SERVER – Out of the Box – Activity and Performance Reports from SSSMS (Link). A user asked me a question regarding if we can use similar reports to get the detail about Indexes. Yes, it is possible to do the same. There are similar type of reports are available at Database level, just like those available at the Server Instance level. You can right click on Database name and click Reports. Under Standard Reports, you will find following reports. Disk Usage Disk Usage by Top Tables Disk Usage by Table Disk Usage by Partition Backup and Restore Events All Transactions All Blocking Transactions Top Transactions by Age Top Transactions by Blocked Transactions Count Top Transactions by Locks Count Resource Locking Statistics by Objects Object Execute Statistics Database Consistency history Index Usage Statistics Index Physical Statistics Schema Change history User Statistics Select the Reports with name Index Physical Statistics. Once click, a report containing all the index names along with other information related to index will be visible, e.g. Index Type and number of partitions. One column that caught my interest was Operation Recommended. In some place, it suggested that index needs to be rebuilt. It is also possible to click and expand the column of partitions and see additional details about index as well. DBA and Developers who just want to have idea about how your index is and its physical statistics can use this tool. Click to Enlarge Note: Please note that I will rebuild my indexes just because this report is recommending it. There are many other parameters you need to consider before rebuilding indexes. This post talks about  how to get more details about these three most important components using the Management Data Collection. Management Data Collection generates the reports for the three said components by default. Configuring Data Collection is a very easy task and can be done very quickly. Please note: There are many different ways to get reports generated for CPU, Memory and IO. You can use DMVs, Extended Events as well Perfmon to trace the data. Keeping the T-SQL Tuesday subject of reporting this post is created to give visual tutorial to quickly configure Data Collection and generate Reports. From Book On-Line: The data collector is a core component of the Data Collection platform for SQL Server 2008 and the tools that are provided by SQL Server. The data collector provides one central point for data collection across your database servers and applications. This collection point can obtain data from a variety of sources and is not limited to performance data, unlike SQL Trace.
