  • One Windows Domain workstation can ping gateway but gets no internet access

    One of the (Windows XP SP3) workstations of our Windows Domain could not access internet anymore, this problem suddenly happened overnight. The domain controllers (there are three of them) are all running Windows Server 2008. First I compared the output of ipconfig /all on the faulty workstation with the output of a working workstation and it was just fine as it had always been. In particular the default gateway was correct and always remained pingable from the faulty workstation. I guessed that something was wrong with the DHCP service and I restarted the DHCP server service on all of our three DCs as well as the DHCP client service on the faulty workstation. This didn't solve the issue. I then thought of renewing the DHCP lease with ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew and here is my first question: why did this never work? The same IP address (192.168.0.45) kept being assigned despite all my attempts to renew it (note that all our workstation are getting their TCP/IP automatically.) Even by leaving the domain and changing the computer name the same address was yet again obtained... Anyway I then proceeded to switch the TCP/IP configuration for that machine manually to another free valid IP address (192.168.0.41)... and then the internet access came back! I then cleared any traces of the previous IP in the DHCP leases list and in the DNS tables of our DCs and, after setting back the TCP/IP configuration to 'automatic', finally, the new lease would be granted (192.168.0.41) alongside with the internet access. My second question: what went suddenly wrong with the original IP address?

  • Dovecot starting and running, but not listening on any port

    Among others things I'm in charge of a Debian GNU/Linux (Wheezy) DomU for the mail services of the company i work for. Yesterday one HDD that was used for this particular server has died. After installing Debian again, Dovecot decided to no longer listen on any ports (checked with netstat -l).   • linux networking: how to redirect incoming connections from old server to new server?

    hi I'm in the process of moving my old server to a new server, but i will keep the old server running for database replication and load balancing, etc. each server has a separate internet connection with a static ip, and they are connected through a local Ethernet connection. I've got Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit running on old server and Debian 6.0 64-bit on new one. shorewall firewall is installed on both servers. there are some outdoor devices which are periodically sending data to port 43597 for old server IP address. I can run multiple instances of the network service which is responsible for receiving data from devices on a server but on different ports. here's the question: how can I run the service on new server and have connections coming to old server redirected to it, and new devices can still connect to new server's IP address preferably on the same port and same service? until all devices get updated to send to new server. I've tried a shorewall DNAT rule, but seems like new server's default route should be changed to ethernet connection, which breaks other things. I also found about redir utility, but still haven't tried it. is there any best practice or simple solution for such a scenario, i'm not aware of? thanks in advance.

    I am using nagios 3.06 to monitor the servers. When a service is critical, it sends a mail, but when a server is down no mail is sent. Even if all the services go to critical state, no mail is sent.   • Reverse web proxy with time constraints

    I have a web application which produces several unique URLs of the type http://service.company.com/service.html?type=aaaa&key=jfiZm6u6cW where the last part is a randomly generated key. Each such URL provides access to an instance of the service provided. I am looking for a way to restrict access to those URLs based on time constraints, as an example URL#1 should be available between 8:00AM and 10:00AM on May 30, URL#2 should be available between 10:30AM and 12:00PM on May 31, and so on. I already have a resource scheduling application based on Drupal and would like to find a way to include those URLs as scheduled resources. The web application is deployed on Apache Tomcat, so I don't have the knowledge or the resources to alter it, therefore I thought that I could put some sort of reverse proxy in front of the web app that could implement the time constraint feature. In my thoughts the reverse proxy would allow or disallow access to each URL based on the rules that my scheduling application would provide. There may be other ways to deliver such a solution, but I can't think of anything better, so the question is: is there a reverse web proxy architecture that could allow access to the destination URLs based on time and date rules? Any other ideas are more than welcome.

    I have a host that acts as a gateway for other hosts. The configuration is such that eth0(192.168.1.3) is connected to internet via a router and eth1(172.16.2.50) is connected to internal network via switch. Given that, this host is also running a service that is bound to eth1 and serves the internal network. I want to extend this service to the outside world as well and was trying to manipulate iptables so that any request that comes to this host via eth0 and is directed to 192.168.1.3:80 is send to 172.16.2.50 and internet users can also make use of the service.   • How do I get to the bottom of network latency and bandwidth issues

    I recently moved two blocks south. That move moved me from Comcast to Broadstripe (high-speed internet cable providers). Comcast was pretty good. Broadstripe sucks. I called them on the phone, and they basically brushed me off (politely). I want to come to them with some numbers, so I can say more than just "it's really slow". I still have access to my old Comcast service, so I can run the tests using both providers. Here's what I'm seeing with my new Broadstripe service: 1) When I browse to most sites, there is a long delay (5-10 seconds) before the page starts loading in my browser 2) The speed test tell me I have 12 megs down (bullshit) 3) I have a server at my office. I just downloaded some files (using scp on the command line). It said I'm getting 3.5 KB/s I'm an experienced programmer and spend most of my days on the command line and in vim. Networking, however is not a strong point. I've played around with traceroute, but I'm not sure if that's the right tool to use. I have access to servers all over the country (I would just use Amazon EC2 to set up a test server), and I prefer to use Ubuntu for my testing. How can I come up with some hard numbers to show Broadstripe how crappy their service is?

    I accidentally deleted my Dell xps 14 touch pad disabling driver and I don't know where to find it and reinstall it. I have already tried Dell support and without luck (I don't want to install something that I don't know). Would anyone please send me the link to that driver To clarify: There is this Fn shortcut key used to disable/enable touch pad in Dell xps14 and when press it orange light on touch pad will lit and touch pad will stop working. But after deleting the driver that responsible for that function,it stopped working. My service center is almost 600 miles away and he said that he forgot to add it last time he fix my laptop. Since the internet connection at his place is slow,he can't send me from mail either.So can anyone send me the link for that driver. Since I don't really know about drivers it would be really nice if some one show me the driver name or link. Sorry,here is my laptop service tag "C37KWL1".I don't know how to find the specific driver for that function key.My dell has a short cut for disabling touchpad with picture on it along with the other multimedia short cut key with picture. since xps 15 and 17 have seperated touch key instead of on function keys mine have to choose function key or multimedia key through setting.To be honest my service center tech guy forgot to install it when he repair it and can't send me the file(which is about over 20mb or something according to him)for some reason.All i need is that particular file.

    I use OpenVPN to connect to a VPN service. I will often use it unattended and on occasion I have come back to find the service disconnected and GUI asking for login credentials. If the connection is disconnected by the service, and not me, I'd like it to attempt to reconnect automatically with no intervention from me, and ideally, if the reconnection attempt initially fails, keep attempting to do so at regular intervals until a connection is successfully. Is there anyway to configure OpenVPN to do this? If not, can someone suggest a way of doing it with scripting (I use Windows)? Failing that, can anyone suggest a VPN solution that does this? The VPN provider supports PPTP as well as OpenVPN. I have configured OpenVPN to read login credentials from a file. Below is my config script.     Deploying ASP.NET 3.5 Web Service to local IIS (on Windows 7) I get this error message... The account 'ASPNET' does not appear to be valid. The account was obtained from this location: 'AspNetWorkerProcessIdentityName'. Some or all identity references could not be translated. Publish failed to deploy. I've tried making the site use a specific Application Pool, and the Network Service user (which also has full rights to the deployment folder) but to no avail.

    I am getting the following error during a web service request to a remote web service: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. --- System.Security.Authentication.AuthenticationException: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure. Is there anyway to ignore this error, and continue. It seems the remote certificate is not signed.     Hello, I am using Flex 3 and make a call through a RemoteObject to a Java 1.6 method and exposed with BlazeDS and Spring 2.5.5 Integration over a SecureAMFChannel. The ActionScript is as follows (this code is an example of the real thing which is on a separate dev network); import com.adobe.cairngorm.business.ServiceLocator; import mx.collections.ArrayCollection; import mx.rpc.remoting.RemoteObject; import mx.rpc.IResponder; public class MyClass implements IResponder { private var service:RemoteObject = ServiceLocator.getInstance().getRemoteOjbect("mySerivce"); public MyClass() { [ArrayElementType("Number")] private var myArray:ArrayCollection; var id1:Number = 1; var id2:Number = 2; var id3:Number = 3; myArray = new ArrayCollection([id1, id2, id3]); getData(myArray); } public function getData(myArrayParam:ArrayCollection):void { var token:AsyncToken = service.getData(myArrayParam); token.addResponder(this.responder); //Assume responder implementation method exists and works } } This will make a call, once created to the service Java class which is exposed through BlazeDS (assume the mechanics work because they do for all other calls not involving Collection parameters). My Java service class looks like this; public class MySerivce { public Collection<DataObjectPOJO> getData(Collection<Long> myArrayParam) { //The following line is never executed and throws an exception for (Long l : myArrayParam) { System.out.println(l); } } } The exception that is thrown is a ClassCastException saying that a java.lang.Integer cannot be cast to a java.lang.Long. I worked around this issue by looping through the collection using Object instead, checking to see if it is an Integer, cast it to one, then do a .longValue() on it then add it to a temp ArraList. Yuk. The big problem is my application is supposed to handle records in the billions from a DB and the id will overflow the 2.147 billion limit of an integer. I would love to have BlazeDS or the JavaAdapter in it, translate the ActionScript Number to a Long as specified in the method. I hate that even though I use the generic the underlying element type of the collection is an Integer. If this was straight Java, it wouldn't compile. Any ideas are appreciated. Solutions are even better! :)

    I receive an error message when exposing an ADO.NET Data Service using an Entity Framework data model that contains an entity (called "Case") with an internal setter on a property. If I modify the setter to be public (using the entity designer), the data services works fine. I don’t need the entity "Case" exposed in the data service, so I tried to limit which entities are exposed using SetEntitySetAccessRule. This didn’t work, and service end point fails with the same error. public static void InitializeService(IDataServiceConfiguration config) { config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("User", EntitySetRights.AllRead); } The error message is reported in a browser when the .svc endpoint is called. It is very generic, and reads “Request Error. The server encountered an error processing the request. See server logs for more details.” Unfortunately, there are no entries in the System and Application event logs. I found this stackoverflow question that shows how to configure tracing on the service. After doing so, the following NullReferenceExceptoin error was reported in the trace log. I started wondering if it is even possible to get netTcpBinding working when debbuging through VS10. I'm hosting my service in a svc-file since I'm planning on hosting it in the IIS (7).
