• Fetch last item in a category that fits specific criteria

  Let's assume I have a database with two tables: categories and articles. Every article belongs to a category. Now, let's assume I want to fetch the latest article of each category that fits a specific criteria (read: the article does). If it weren't for that extra criteria, I could just add a column called last_article_id or something similar to the categories table - even though that wouldn't be properly normalized. How can I do this though? I assume there's something using GROUP BY and HAVING?

  I'm trying to build a data install script that I use to setup a new webstore. This script creates the categories, pages and static blocks and default settings for the specific shop (we use a multistore setup to host the shops). In our dev/staging setup this scripts runs great and all categories are build without any problem. But on our live system this script fails. After some debugging I found the difference is in the Flat catalog usage on the live systems. The problem with creating the category with the flat tables enabled is in getting the parent path information based on the parentId given: $parentCategory = Mage::getModel('catalog/category')->load($parentId); Without flat categories enabled this gives a correct parentCategory, but with flat categories enabled it gives an empty object. Why is this behaviour with flat categories enabled?

  I have a Profile model with a hasOne relationship to a Detail model.   I have to develop a basic social network for an academic purpose; but I need some tips for the users management.. The users are subdivided into 3 groups with different privilege: admins,analysts and standards users. For every user should be stored into the database the following information: name,lastname,e-mail,age,password.   I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how to write this query. A hypothetical problem that is that same as the one I'm trying to solve: Say I have a table of apples. Each apple has numerous attributes, such as color_id, variety_id and the orchard_id they were picked from. The color_id, variety_id, and orchard_id all refer to their respective tables: colors, varieties, and orchards. Now, say I need to query for all apples that have color_id = '3', which refers to yellow in the colors table. I want to somehow obtain this yellow value from the query. Make sense? Here's what I was trying: SELECT * FROM apples, colors.id WHERE color_id = '3' LEFT JOIN colors ON apples.color_id = colors.id

• Is there a best practice for maintaining history in a database?

  I don't do database work that often so this is totally unfamiliar territory for me. I have a table with a bunch of records that users can update. However, I now want to keep a history of their changes just in case they want to rollback. Rollback in this case is not the db rollback but more like revert changes two weeks later when they realized that they made a mistake. The distinction being that I can't have a transaction do the job. Is the current practice to use a separate table, or just a flag in the current table? It's a small database, 5 tables each with < 6 columns, < 1000 rows total.

• Newbie SQL joining question: houses, refrigerators, and apples

  There are three tables in my database: apples, refrigerators, and houses. Each apple belongs to a refrigerator (it has a column that references the refrigerator that it's in), and each refrigerator belongs to a house. The problem is, each apple ALSO belongs to a house. I guess this isn't "normalized" or whatever, but it's the way it is. Obviously, each apple should belong to the house that its refrigerator belongs to. An apple can't be in two different places at once, after all. So, my question is this: what SQL statement will allow me to find all of the "bad apples" that for some reason incorrectly reference a different house than the refrigerator that they are supposedly in. In other words, I need to find the apples that contain contradictory information. I don't know if this is a "join" question or not, but I'm sure there's probably a very straightforward way of figuring this out. I just don't know what it is. Thanks for your help!

• created modified function (default) is not working in Cakephp 1.2 version

  I created an application and all the db tables have 'created,modified' fields that filled automatically by Cakephp's Default Functionality. And i put the Field Type is created datetime NULL, modified datetime NULL, like. But it doesn't work. The data where shows 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Format. The cakephp version is 1.2 , so i put the datetime NULL option ,also i removed the temp,cache files in Model. I need to save the correct date & time format for those 2 fields. If there is any problem with XAMPP version (I use the latest version of XAMPP,1.7.7 PHP: 5.3.8 & mysql v 5.5.16 ) I hope that all are identifies my Issue. Please help me with correct solution.   For the first time I am needing to join information from two tables and am quite nervous about doing it without any advice first. Basically, I am building a secure site that is accessed by authorised users. I have my login table with user_id, username, password Once the user is on the site, they have the option of inputting data into another table called input. At the moment this table only captures the information that is entered, not the user_id or username of the inputter. I would like the form to be able to input the user_id and/or username from the login table into the input table. Please could somebody talk me through this process? I am sure that once this is amended, I will then be able to use the table to only allow the logged in user to access the information that he or she have inputted, is that correct? Many thanks

• Is this SQL select code following good practice?

  I am using sqlite and will port to mysql (5) later. I wanted to know if I am doing something I shouldnt be doing. I tried purposely to design so I'll compare to 0 instead of 1 (I changed hasApproved to NotApproved to do this, not a big deal and I haven't written any code). I was told I never need to write a subquery but I do here. My Votes table is just id, ip, postid (I don't think I can write that subquery as a join instead?) and that's pretty much all that is on my mind. Naming conventions I don't really care about since the tables are created via reflection and is all over the place. select id, name, body, upvotes, downvotes, (select 1 from UpVotes where IPAddr=?   We have a requirement to delete rows in the order of millions from multiple tables as a batch job (note that we are not deleting all the rows, we are deleting based on a timestamp stored in an indexed column). Obviously a normal DELETE takes forever (because of logging, referential constraint checking etc.). I know in the LUW world, we have ALTER TABLE NOT LOGGED INITIALLY but I can't seem to find the an equivalent SQL statement for DB2 v8 z/OS. Any one has any ideas on how to do this really fast? Also, any ideas on how to avoid the referential checks when deleting the rows? Please let me know.

  Hello Everyone, I need users to create custom reports. These users do not know any technical skills like SQL. We currently have a custom database report design. So basically whatever the user does on the GUI the application will have to generate the appropriate SQL to generate the report structure. Has anyone done this before? I know there are reporting solutions out there but we already have our own database tables for reporting. We already have a section where users can view reports displayed in HTML. Like for example if user selects a "UserID" and "Accounts" fields from GUI, how would I know that my SQL has to join the USER and ACCOUNTS table? I guess I'm just looking for some ideas to help me solve this problem. Thanks.

• Design pattern for data entry forms with LINQ2SQL

  I am about to start a new winforms data entry application, it already has the database designed which I am comfortable with. I was going to use LINQ2SQL to access the tables to keep things type safe but am now wondering about design patterns, something I am just getting into. Since LINQ is giving me objects to use should I still create classes in between to hold the validation code and helper methods or should these just go in with the UI? It just seems I will end up with classes sat in between with little code which will cause the UI classes to have code just getting and setting values in the intermediate class and returning from validation to flag errors... Any good reading on this? Should I consider the entity framework (or similar) instead?

  I think the best way to explain this is to tell you what I have. I have two tables A and B both have columns Field1 and Field2. However Field 2 is not populated in table B I want to populate field 2 of table B with field 2 of table A where field 1 of table A matches field 1 of table B. something like update tableB set Field2 = tableA.field2 where tablea.field1 = tableb.field1. The reason this may seem so odd and obscure is that I'm tyring to do an inital data load form an old database to a new one. please let me know if you need clarification

  I have several locations in tables in a mysql database which i want to have displayed as POI's, the table is too large and changes too frequently to use sql lite so i need to get the info from mysql. I have set up a mapView indicating the device location in mapview using an image at drawable, but i now need to ad the other locations from the database. Then when a user clicks on an item i need a popup with options to route there using google maps navigation, or view mobi site, phone, or email. I am new to android. Please assist. Have gone through the overlay tut but no indication on how to get the info from db. Is there a tut somwhere so i can see some example code to do this?

• Core Data No Longer Updating Sqlite Schema

  I am using core data for my app and I never had any problems adding or removing columns until recently. But now even if I make changes to my xcdatamodel and generate new and updated entity h/m files, sqlite doesn't seem to be picking up the changes. I actually went over to the documents folder and inspected the create statement for the relevant tables in sqlite3 and I was able to confirm that the columns I added were missing. I removed and redeployed the app several times to no avail. Is it possible to do something to the app to make it disregard any schema changes being made through xcdatamodel? I guess another thing I should mention is I recently started putting my entire projects folder in CVS so I wonder if something got messed up in the checkin and check out process.
