• Change Win7 desktop background via Win2k3 Group Policy

  I'm experiencing some strange behavior: I have set the following policies: User Configuration\Administrative templates\Desktop\Active Desktop Enable active desktop [enabled] Active Desktop Wallpaper [set to local path -- quadruple checked; path is correct] Allow only bitmap wallpaper [disabled] gpupdate /force, log out, log back in, and the background is just black. • dell u2410 3dMark Benchmark distortion problems

  Ive been doing burn in testing for a new system I have put together and I am running into some video distortion problems with running the 3DMark benchmark tools (Both 06 and Vantage). The graphics will be fine, then sometimes during a test switch the screen will light up with thin horizontal ranibow lines (Something that looks very "glitchy") If i turn the monitor off and back on it clears up. All the tests "pass" and my system gets good marks but it concerns me if I might have problems with games (The screen returns to normal if I dont resest monitor and just let tests pass). I want to return a problem component now before its too late if it is something with the new hardware. Also, I am monitoring temp with thermal laser gun and the card itself is not going above 65c. Any ideas? System: Asrock x58 Xtreme - Last BIOS (1.80) EVGA Geforce GTX 285 w/ latest nvidia drivers (Connect via DVI1) Dell U2410(Set to 59hz refresh 1900x1202 -although I believe benchmarks run 1200x1024) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 12Gb DDR3 1600 RAM

• Windows XP app not able to talk to web server

  My company makes an app built with Adobe Air which talks to our webserver for user authentication. Some users are not able to login. Running Charles Proxy tells us that the "host cannot be found." Loading up the webserver in IE, initially we weren't able to visit the site, we had to add it to trusted sites. My guess is that some security setting is denying our app as well. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as where to make security looser for our app?

  Hi guys, I have a new domain: www.biografica.ro which was bought 3 months ago but never used still then. I've bought a server with Windows 2008 server instaWeb Server (IIS). I've added a new site in C:\inetpu\wwwroot directory and did the setting (assigned the default ip to www.biografica.ro host etc -i've did on IIS6 one year ago, so i think i know to set up it correctly)... The problem is that the default site created by IIS instalation is working, but mine is not. It is started but is says: This link appears to be broken in Chrome and "The webpage cannot be found" (in IE). Do you know guys what i;ve done wrong? As i know a domain takes time to propagate but i think locally it should work.. Please help...i've spent 3 hours and cannot find a way...:(

• Internet Explorer 6 Encountered An Error ntl.dll Issue on XP and Win2000

  As we have some PC's still running Windows 2000 and this is beyond our control we use IE 6 so we can keep the IE platform standard. Recently on some XP and Win2000 PCs IE has been crashing with the Encountered a Problem and Needs to close do you want to send a message to Microsoft error when entering some sites. This happens even after a format reinstall with minimal software load (Office 2000, some avaya software, kaspersky, tapiex.dll). The module pointed to in the error report is ntl.dll. There are lots of reports over the net of the problem but has anyone resolved this issue? (Latest IE6 updates are installed). Also please note there were no 3rd party IE addons, spyware, viruses or adware Hope someone can help.

• How do I set up DNS for an intranet web site?

  I have a web site running on our local server, 'OBAMA'. In my hosts file on that server, I map engenxt.local to 127.0.0.1, so typing engenxt.local on that machine itself brings up the website. I would like other machines to access the site via domain name 'engenxt'. On a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard server, where would I begin, where should I go, and where should I end? I know precious little about DNS, or rather precious nothing, but am a quick study, besides, that is why I'm asking how to do this here. Episode 2 When I run DNS as Ryan suggests, it says 'the server OBAMA is unavailable. Do I want to add it?' It adds it, and tells me to choose to 'Configure a DNS server' from the actions menu, but nearly all the actions in that menu are disabled.

• Server 2012 GPO: PowerShell Script on Computer Startup not running

  I've got a couple of Server 2012 instances on Amazon EC2 and I'm in the process of setting up the GPOs. All of the settings of the GPOs are being applied fine, except none of the PowerShell scripts specified on computer startup are actually being executed. The scripts are sitting on a UNC share which has Authenticated Users applied to it with full permissions. I'm assuming it probably has something to do with the Execution Policy, but I'm not sure how to automatically bypass it. I could just go in each instance and bypass the Execution Policy, but that's obviously not a good idea, plus I'm eventually going to connect Windows 7 computers that will be running the same scripts. How can I get the scripts to actually run? Google searches hasn't yielded a whole lot...

• Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds.   I had installed windows 7 for testing. Now i want to re-install windows xp home original. I am using the toshiba installation(recovery) disk. The installation process asked a few questions. I selected the option to retain other partitions and to delete only c drive. • internet connection problem related to a recurring registry error

  I have a Windows XP desktop system connected to the Internet via ethernet LAN. Initially, none of my browsers were connecting to the Internet, but I was able to update my antivirus software and all of my connection settings were perfect. I was able to solve the problem by running WinSock XP, which apparently fixes connection problems that have been caused by registry issues. My problem now is that every time I shut down the machine, the problem comes back (Internet browsers won't connect). Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on this? Thanks

• Change Command Prompt width from the Command Line

  Don't really know what more I can say really. That window captured below will simply not get any larger. Are there some settings somewhere that will allow me to resize it? See, this limited window thing has left me in a bit of a pickle. Basically I've created an application with a command line GUI (With Ruby's Curses Library), and while everything works beautifully on OSX and Ubuntu Terminals, with Command Prompt, if the Curses Windows are larger than the Command Prompt window as shown below, the whole application crashes with a 'window already closed' error. So, is there a setting that allows users to resize their Command Prompt window, something that I'll have to put in the documentation. Here's what the holy grail answer would, be though: Is there a way to do this from the command line? Could my application detect if the Command Prompt it's running on is of fixed width, and actually programatically run the command to allow the Command Prompt window to be enlarged? Or at least give the user a helpful error message?

The value of this 'command' key apparently can be any valid command line. I want to know which 'special variables' are available for use inside this command line. • Windows screen shots via command-line SSH session

  I've browsed the handful of "screen capture" queries here, but I was unable to find anything which addressed my specific need. I'm looking for a command-line tool that I can run via remote SSH connection (by way of the cygwin sshd daemon). There are several to choose from, but the few I've tried (ImageMagick, nircmd, and MiniCap) all result in a blank screen. I assume that this is due to the remotely logged in user not having a proper graphical console session running. The goal here is automate screen capture and retrieval of the main system console (what one would see if they were looking at the physical monitor) through the use of ssh script from a Unix host: ssh user@windowshost "screencap --output /tmp/console.jpg" scp user@windowshost:/tmp/console.jpg /some/destdir Note that these must be done on demand, so polling a remote directory that has snapshots dumped periodically will not work. Bonus points for programs that are open source and have a portable install (so I don't need to RDP/VNC into the machine to run a graphical installer).

• Trouble joining Windows Server 2008 to Domain

  When I try to join my new server to my existing domain I get the following error: "An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resove DNS names in the target domain." I have tried all of the following already: Successfully pinged the domain controller. Ping the new server from the domain controller by IP address and by DNS name. Ping the DC server from the new server by IP address and by DNS name. Changed the network to DHCP (it was originally static). No joy as static or DHCP. Turned off all firewall settings. Added the domain name to 'hosts' file. Added the server name of the primary domain controller to the 'hosts' file in the new server. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help! Jim Update: With help from J. Brian Kelly (Thanks) I have managed to narrow down the problem to a DNS issue. Specifically, UDP/53 packets are being sent (they are seen in Network Monitor), but are not getting to the DNS server.   I'm trying to automate the installation of an MSI on my server, however before the installation can go ahead I need to uninstall the previous version from the server. Searching on the internet I've found that WMIC is the tool required but there seems to be a problem with the setup of WMI on the server. • How can I copy from one domain pc (winxp) logged off, to another domain server (w2k3)

  Hi, I have a automation build server which creates nightly builds. It does this while logged off in Windows XP. This is is one domain while the server I wish to copy the builds to is in another domain (win2k3). I can't use a network share when logged off and as soon as I try to browse manually to the server it prompts for a username/password I am guessing the only way is to create a script/batch file which has a domain account and password for the server and runs at a scheduled time. If there is a more elegant way, please let me know. thanks

  I'm running Windows XP Professional, and ever since the last service pack I've had a searching problem. When I want to search a network drive, I get the following message: This folder is not indexed. To search this directory plase use Search Companion or add this directory to your index via options. Basically, I have two questions. Is there some way that I can use the indexed search where appropriate and then have it switch over to the Search Companion automatically? Second, how does a programmer look at this code and think this is a good idea? I realize that this question is rhetorical. However, I must enter my search string into one search, receive the error, and then click "Search Companion" to bring up the new search window. This window doesn't even take the defaults from the previous one so I have to specify the search string and drive again.

• How to copy files pointed to (not the shortcut files themselves)

  I have a folder containing shortcuts that point to files that are located in various directories and drives. I would like to copy the files pointed to (NOT the shortcut files themselves) to a single destination folder. Is there a way in windows (XP, Vista, 7), file manager, or some utility I can use to do this? I've heard you can do this with various multi-step custom scripts. However, I've heard rumors there is a one click way to do this without having to fabricate a custom script each time, where regardless where the shortcuts point to, I can select the group of shortcuts and do a copy operation that will grab the files they point to. Then, I can paste or otherwise put the actual files (not shortcuts) into one directory. It would be very time consuming to manually find each file pointed to by a shortcut and one by one copy them to the target folder. Note that I've seen this question asked before on the internet but haven't seen a good answer.

Now, Microsoft seems to recommend Applocker instead. However we found no possibilities to add custom extensions like JAR, CPL, MSC etc. which was possible in Software Restriction Policies. Do you know how to add custom extensions to the Applocker policies in Windows 2008? Or how can we block custom script interpreters like Perl etc.?

  Hi, We're using ADFS 2.0 on a windows 2008 server, it's in a farm and has the default polling interval of 5 minutes. We're making a change tonight and would rather sync immediately than wait for the other guy to update, especially as we might be making multiple changes.   hi, I have four drives on my computer. The problem is that each time i start a computer the scan disk check runs for a drive even if i shut down my computer properly. I ran the thorough scandisk check but still for that drive, the scandisk check is always performed no matter what. I wonder what is wrong although everything is fine and accessible along with drive data. Could you guys please help me out of this? I am using Windows XP SP2. Thanks

• Asp.net error messages when on server are not displayed

  I have been tasked with setting up asp.net websites on a windows server 2008 which are all in debug mode When browsing a website on the server and an error occurs, for example the database connection cannot be open I would expect as per normal to receive the Asp.net Server error page with an error dump Something like - http://www.codeproject.com/KB/books/1861005040/image091.gif However, what actually happens is I get random characters on the web page. For example: <?)=????*??2o????v??YK?WuZ,?6[N??f?O??b??@!???u]S??yQ?iN?&e???E???j??1z??x??????o?y????U??M???2d?i?4 This is not the correct or expected behaviour. The event log does however show what has gone wrong. How do I get the Server Error page to render properly, am I missing something in the servers asp.net setup?

• Sysprep on Windows 7 for a non-windows admin?

  I'm needing to use sysprep to deploy some Windows 7 machines. I can't find any resources that explain this very easily. In particular, I've loaded all of the programs I want for the image onto a computer. If I want to use prepares this for cloning onto 200 other machines, what steps would I need to take? Or do I need to start again, creating the image using 'audit' mode? The machines I'm using come pre-configured from the manufacturer with a host of custom drivers that wouldn't be fun to re-install - I'd rather use their base image to build upon. Cheers, Victor

• Routing to a Terminal Services Cluster

  I am trying to connect to a Load Balanced Windows 2008 R2 cluster using Remote Desktop Services. I have no trouble connecting to the the Servers' IP addresses (.253.16 and .253.17) or the Cluster address (.253.20) from inside the subnet (.253). The trouble is when I try to connect from the other subnet(.251). I can remote to the other non-clustered servers (.253.12 and .253.15) inside the .253 subnet from the .251 without an issue. I receive a ping reply from the cluster and other servers when I am on the .251 subnet. But when I try to connect via remote desktop it times out but only to any of the IPs on the cluster (.20,.17,.16). My ASA 5510 handling the routing reports message in the log: Deny TCP (no connection) from 192.168.251.2/4283 to 192.168.253.16/3389 flag FIN PSH ACK Here is a picture if it helps http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4217864/terminal%20server.jpg Thanks for any help
