  • Logparser and Powershell

    - by Michel Klomp
    Logparser in powershell One of the few examples how to use logparser in powershell is from the Microsoft.com Operations blog. This script is a good base to create more advanced logparser scripts: $myQuery = new-object -com MSUtil.LogQuery $szQuery = “Select top 10 * from r:\ex07011210.log”; $recordSet = $myQuery.Execute($szQuery) for(; !$recordSet.atEnd(); $recordSet.moveNext()) {             $record=$recordSet.getRecord();             write-host ($record.GetValue(0) + “,”+ $record.GetValue(1)); } $recordSet.Close(); Logparser input formats The previous example uses the default logparser object, you can extent this with the logparser input formats. with this formats get information from the event-log, different types of logfiles, the Active Directory, the registry and XML files. Here are the different ProgId’s you can use. Input Format ProgId ADS MSUtil.LogQuery.ADSInputFormat BIN MSUtil.LogQuery.IISBINInputFormat CSV MSUtil.LogQuery.CSVInputFormat ETW MSUtil.LogQuery.ETWInputFormat EVT MSUtil.LogQuery.EventLogInputFormat FS MSUtil.LogQuery.FileSystemInputFormat HTTPERR MSUtil.LogQuery.HttpErrorInputFormat IIS MSUtil.LogQuery.IISIISInputFormat IISODBC MSUtil.LogQuery.IISODBCInputFormat IISW3C MSUtil.LogQuery.IISW3CInputFormat NCSA MSUtil.LogQuery.IISNCSAInputFormat NETMON MSUtil.LogQuery.NetMonInputFormat REG MSUtil.LogQuery.RegistryInputFormat TEXTLINE MSUtil.LogQuery.TextLineInputFormat TEXTWORD MSUtil.LogQuery.TextWordInputFormat TSV MSUtil.LogQuery.TSVInputFormat URLSCAN MSUtil.LogQuery.URLScanLogInputFormat W3C MSUtil.LogQuery.W3CInputFormat XML MSUtil.LogQuery.XMLInputFormat Using logparser to parse IIS logs if you use the IISW3CinputFormat you can use the field names instead of de row number to get the information from an IIS logfile, it also skips the comment rows in the logfile. $ObjLogparser = new-object -com MSUtil.LogQuery $objInputFormat = new-object -com MSUtil.LogQuery.IISW3CInputFormat $Query = “Select top 10 * from c:\temp\hb\ex071002.log”; $recordSet = $ObjLogparser.Execute($Query, $objInputFormat) for(; !$recordSet.atEnd(); $recordSet.moveNext()) {     $record=$recordSet.getRecord();     write-host ($record.GetValue(“s-ip”) + “,”+ $record.GetValue(“cs-uri-query”)); } $recordSet.Close();

  • Progressive Enhancement vs. Single Page Apps

    - by SeanPlusPlus
I just got back from a conference in Boston called An Event Apart. A really popular theme amongst the speakers was the idea of progressive enhancement - a site's content should go in the HTML, and JavaScript should only be used to enhance behavior. The arguments that the speakers gave for progressive enhancement were very compelling. Not only is it a solid pattern for supporting older browsers, and devices on a network with low bandwidth, but HTML fails much more gracefully than JavaScript (i.e. markup that is not supported is just ignored, while if a browser throws an exception while executing your script - you are hosed). Jeremy Keith gave a particularly insightful talk about this. But what about single page web apps like Backbone and Angular? The whole design behind these frameworks seems to push the developer toward moving content out of the HTML, and into something like a JSON API. I can not seem to gel these two design patterns: progressive enhancement vs. single page web apps. Are there instances when one is better than the other? Or are they not even antagonistic technologies, and I am missing something here with my mental model?

  • Silverlight Cream for April 24, 2010 -- #846

    - by Dave Campbell
In this Issue: Michael Washington, Timmy Kokke, Pete Brown, Paul Yanez, Emil Stoychev, Jeremy Likness, and Pavan Podila. Shoutouts: If you've got some time to spend, the User Experience Kit is packed with info: User Experience Kit, and just plain fun to navigate ... thanks Scott Barnes for reminding me about it! Jesse Liberty is looking for some help organizing and cataloging posts for a new project he's got going: Help Wanted Emil Stoychev posted Slides and demos from my talk on Silverlight 4 From SilverlightCream.com: Silverlight 4 Drag and Drop File Manager Michael Washington has a post up about a Silverlight Drag and Drop File Manager in MVVM, but a secondary important point about the post is that he and Alan Beasley followed strict Designer/Developer rules on this... you recognized Alan's ListBox didn't you? Changing CSS with jQuery syntax in Silverlight using jLight Timmy Kokke is using jLight as introduced in a prior post to interact with the DOM from Silverlight. Essential Silverlight and WPF Skills: The UI Thread, Dispatchers, Background Workers and Async Network Programming Pete Brown has a great backrounder up for WPF and Silverlight devs on threading and networking, good comments too so far. Fluid layout and Fullscreen in Silverlight Paul Yanez has a quick post and demo up on forcing full-screen with a fluid layout, all code included -- and it doesn't take much Data Binding in Silverlight Emil Stoychev has a great long tutorial up on DataBinding in Silverlight ... he hits all the major points with text, samples, and code... definitely one to read! Yet Another MVVM Locator Pattern Another not-necessarily Silverlight post from Jeremy Likness -- but definitely a good one on MVVM and locator patterns. The SpiderWebControl for Silverlight Pavan Podila has a 'SpiderWebControl' for Silverlight 4 up... this is a great network graph control with any sort of feature I can think of... check out the demo, then grab the code... or the other way around, your choice :) Stay in the 'Light! • July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 20 (sys.dm_tran_locks)

    - by Tamarick Hill
The sys.dm_tran_locks DMV is used to return active lock resources on your server. Locking is a mechanism used by SQL Server to protect the integrity of data when you have multiple users that may potentially access the same data at the same time. Let’s run a query against this DMV so we can analyze the results. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_tran_locks As we can see, its a lot of lock information returned from this DMV. I will not go into detail about each of the columns returned, but I will touch on the ones that I feel are the most important. The first column in the output is the resource_type column which tells you the type of lock a particular row represents. It could be a PAGE lock, RID, OBJECT, DATABASE, or several other lock types. The resource_database_id represents the id of the database for a particular lock resource. The resource_lock_partition column represents the ID of a lock partition. When you have a table that is partitioned, locks can be escalated to the partition level before going to a table level lock. The request_mode column gives us information about the type of lock that is being requested. From the screenshots above we see RangeS-S locks which represent a share range lock and IS locks which represent Intent Shared locks. The request_status column displays whether the lock has been granted or whether the lock is waiting to be acquired. The request_session_id  shows the session_id that is requesting the lock. This DMV is the best place to go when you need to identify the exact locks that are being held or pending for individual requests. You might need this information when you are troubleshooting severe blocking or deadlocking problems on your server. For more information on this DMV, please see the below Books Online link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190345.aspx Follow me on Twitter @PrimeTimeDBA

  • OpenFilesView Displays All Open and Locked Files to Help Resolve In-Use Errors

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Windows: You go to move a file and Windows throws up an “In Use” error. OpenFilesView shows you what application or system process is locking up the files you’re trying to move. Sometimes the culprit is obvious; if you go to move your media folder and you’ve got your media player open watching South Park then shutting down the media player is the obvious solution. Other times the culprit is less obvious; sometimes Windows processes and less-than-obvious applications are accessing your files in ways that aren’t apparent. The screenshot below showcases the “In Use” error: This is where OpenFilesView comes into play. Fire up the application to see a list of all active files on your system. The master list is a bit overwhelming (on our test system there were over 1200 open files) but you use the find command to drill down to specific file or folder names. Once you’ve found the locked file you can close the file handle, kill the process, or bring the process to the front (so you can examine the program, if possible, before terminating it). It’s much more efficient than rebooting in an attempt to shake the In-Use error. OpenFilesView is freeware and works on Windows XP through Windows 7. • IASA South East Florida Chapter February Meeting Report

    - by Rainer Habermann
IASA South East Florida Chapter – February Meeting The topic for our February chapter meeting was Legal Issues in IT. Ms. Kennedy, Intellectual Property Attorney with an active litigation, trademark and copyright practice, presented: How Google, Wal-Mart & Apple Make their Millions – The Secret Ingredient: Intellectual Property This topic initiated great interest and the meeting room at Microsoft Ft. Lauderdale filled up to the last seat. Most Architects, Engineers, and MBA’s are not aware about Intellectual Property, Basic Patent, Trademark, or legal issues related to the web. After clarifying the basic definitions, Ms. Kennedy explained in detail how intellectual property issues could make or break a company. Members had the opportunity at the end of the presentation to ask questions, discuss legal problems, and several members shared their experiences related to Intellectual Property and other IT related issues. If you want to protect your ideas and intellectual property, you have to be aware of the implications and need to take the right steps in order to protect them. All Chapter Members agreed that it was an outstanding and lively presentation. Ms. Kennedy presented high quality content and made participants aware of legal IT issues. In the name of all chapter members, thank you Ms. Kennedy for taking the time for this amazing presentation and to Quent Herschelman for hosting the meeting. • Android Design - Service vs Thread for Networking

    - by Nevyn
I am writing an Android app, finally (yay me) and for this app I need persistant, but user closeable, network sockets (yes, more than one). I decided to try my hand at writing my own version of an IRC Client. My design issue however, is I'm not sure how to run the Socket connectivity itself. If I put the sockets at the Activity level, they keeps getting closed shortly after the Activity becomes non-visible (also a problem that needs solving...but I think i figured that one out)...but if I run a "connectivity service", I need to find out if I can have multiple instances of it running (the service, that is...one per server/socket). Either that or a I need a way to Thread the sockets themselves and have multiple threads running that I can still communicate with directly (ID system of some sort). Thus the question: Is it a 'better', or at least more "proper" design pattern, to put the Socket and networking in a service, and have the Activities consume said service...or should I tie the sockets directly to some Threaded Process owned by the UI Activity and not bother with the service implementation at all? I do know better than to put the networking directly on the UI thread, but that's as far as I've managed to get.

  • No endpoint listening at.........

    - by Michael Stephenson
I was having some very frustrating behaviour on our build server and while I found a number of articles online with similar error messages none of them helped me.  I thought I would just explain this here incase if helps me or anyone else in future. The error message we were getting is:There was no endpoint listening at http://localhostStubs.ExternalApplication/SampleService.svc that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more detailsOur scenario is as follows:We have a solution where a WCF service application hosting the WCF routing service is listening to the Windows Azure Service Bus Relay.  We have an acceptance test project in the solution which sends a message to the service bus which is then received by the WCF routing service and routed to SampleService.svc which is hosted in another IIS application on the same box.  A response is flowed back through to the test.  In the tests there are 5 scenarios simulating a successful message, and various error conditions.  On my developer machine it was working absolutely fine every time, and a clean build on my developer machine worked fine.  On the build server however one or more of the tests would fail each time with the above error message.  There didnt seem to be any pattern to which test would fail. The solution was building on a Windows 2008 R2 machine with IIS 7 and AppFabric Server installed with auto-start configured for the IIS Application which would be listening to service bus. After lots of searching online and looking at logs etc it turned out to be a simple solution to just restart the WAS service (Windows Process Activation Service) and the services it advised you to restart with it.  Hope this helps someone else

  • Ur/Web new purely functional language for web programming?

    - by Phuc Nguyen
I came across the Ur/Web project during my search for web frameworks for Haskell-like languages. It looks like a very interesting project done by one person. Basically, it is a domain-specific purely functional language for web programming, taking the best of ML and Haskell. The syntax is ML, but there are type classes and monad from Haskell, and it's strictly evaluated. Server-side is compiled to native code, client to Javascript. See the slides and FAQ page for other advertised advantages. Looking at the demos and their source code, I think the project is very promising. The latest version is something 20110123, so it seems to be under active development at this time. My question: Has anybody here had any further experience with it? Are there problems/annoyances compared to Haskell, apart from ML's slightly more verbose syntax? Even if it's not well known yet, I hope more people will know of it. OMG this looks very cool to me. I don't want this project to die!!

  • Multiple computers on Ubuntu One

    - by L R Bellmore Jr
I have added files from 4 computers to Ubuntu One. One computer failed. What happens to the files that I uploaded. Are they still on Ubuntu One? How come when I upload a file from computer A, computer B with the same Ubuntu One account does not sync and load that file into computer B - That has created this question.. what happens to files from computers from which I uploaded documents when those computers are no longer active or failed, or no longer have Ubuntu One on that computer from which the files were uploaded... Have I lost the files? The followup question is how come files from Computer A uploaded to Ubuntu One don't sync to Computer B. That is a related question. I need to shut down a computer, reformat the hard drive and install Linux on the entire harddrive instead of a dual boot with Windows XP as I am going to use Virtual Machines instead.. what happens to the files from the Windows Dual Boot that were uploaded to Ubuntu One? Are they removed from Ubuntu One and then have I lost those files if I don't backup to another service first.

  • Is this a secure solution for RESTful authentication?

    - by Chad Johnson
I need to quickly implement a RESTful authentication system for my JavaScript application to use. I think I understand how it should work, but I just want to double check. Here's what I'm thinking -- what do you guys think? Database schema users id : integer first_name : varchar(50) last_name : varchar(50) password : varchar(32) (MD5 hashed) etc. user_authentications id : integer user_id : integer auth_token : varchar(32) (AES encrypted, with keys outside database) access_token : varchar(32) (AES encrypted, with keys outside database) active : boolean Steps The following happens over SSL. I'm using Sinatra for the API. JavaScript requests authentication via POST to /users/auth/token. The /users/auth/token API method generates an auth_token hash, creates a record in user_authentications, and returns auth_token. JavaScript hashes the user's password and then salts it with auth_token -- SHA(access_token + MD5(password)) POST the user's username and hashed+salted password to /users/auth/authenticate. The /users/auth/authenticate API method will verify that SHA(AES.decrypt(access_token) + user.password) == what was received via POST. The /users/auth/authenticate will generate, AES encrypt, store, and return an access token if verification is successful; otherwise, it will return 401 Unauthorized. For any future requests against the API, JavaScript will include access_token, and the API will find the user account based on that.

  • Daylight Saving Time Visualized

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
When you map out the Daylight Saving Time adjusted sunrise and sunset times over the course of the year, an interesting pattern emerges. Chart designer Germanium writes: I tried to come up with the reason for the daylight saving time change by just looking at the data for sunset and sunrise times. The figure represents sunset and sunrise times thought the year. It shows that the daylight saving time change marked by the lines (DLS) is keeping the sunrise time pretty much constant throughout the whole year, while making the sunset time change a lot. The spread of sunrise times as measured by the standard deviation is 42 minutes, which means that the sunrise time changes within that range the whole year, while the standard deviation for the sunset times is 1:30 hours. Whatever the argument for doing this is, it’s pretty clear that reason is to keep the sunrise time constant. You can read more about the controversial history of Daylight Saving Time here. • Is 'Old-School' the Wrong Way to Describe Reliable Security?

    - by rickramsey
source The Hotel Toronto apparently knows how to secure its environment. "Built directly into the bedrock in 1913, the vault features an incredible 4-foot thick steel door that weighs 40 tonnes, yet can nonetheless be moved with a single finger. During construction, the gargantuan door was hauled up Yonge Street from the harbour by a team of 18 horses. " 1913. Those were the days. Sysadmins had to be strong as bulls and willing to shovel horse maneur. At least nowadays you don't have to be that strong. And, if you happen to be trying to secure your Oracle Linux environment, you may be able to avoid the shoveling, as well. Provided you know the tricks of the trade contained in these two recently published articles. Tips for Hardening an Oracle Linux Server General strategies for hardening an Oracle Linux server. • Demantra USA Based Companies and SOX Compliance

    - by user702295
A USA based company is assessing Demantra Trade Promotion Management (TPM) capability.  It appears that SOX is necessary in their case due to the nature of what TPM does and the necessity for auditability.  Do we have any detail on SOX compliance for Demantra? Answser ------- SOX compliance with regards to IT: 1.  Requires auditing of data changes done by who, what, when     a. Audit trail profiles can be set up for key financial series and view them in audit trail reports     b. One functionality we do not have which typically is asked for is user login history. We have only        active sessions, history is not available. 2.  Segregation of duties     a. With respect to TPM, you could have deduction and financial analyst for settlement be different        from promotion creator, promotion approver or sales team.     b. Budget Approver for funds can be different from funds consumer.     c. Promotion creator can be different than promotion approver     d. For a US customer you may have to write some custom scripts to capture promotion status change        and produce an external report as part of compliance. One additional requirement is transparency of forward commitments entered into with retailers / distributors for trade spending, promotions.  Outside of Demantra - Consumer Goods Trade Funds Analytics.

  • Advice for someone moving from Windows / Coldfusion / Java to Linux / Ruby / Rails

    - by Ciaran Archer
Hi all I am thinking of undertaking a serious career move. Currently I work day to day with ColdFusion 9+, and some Java in a Windows environment. My background is Java/JSP etc prior to ColdFusion. I'm considering a move towards Ruby / Rails on Linux as I think it would be a real challenge, keep things fresh and would stand me in good stead for the next few years. There are also more jobs in this area. I would consider myself an experienced web professional. I do TDD and I understand good OO design concepts. I have worked for the past few years on a busy transactional gaming website with all the security and performance challenges that entails. I have also contributed to an open source ColdFusion project recently and I am a active member of the CF community on StackOverflow . In order to maintain my current remuneration (!) etc. I would like to get up to speed on Ruby / Rails and Linux before I go job hunting. The idea is that I can demonstrate enough proficiency in these new skills and combined with my other language / programming / architectural and performance experience I have I'll be a good candidate. I am building a personal website in Rails 3.0 on Ubuntu which I hope will expose me to lots of Rails/Ruby and I am reading a few books. What else can I do? Has anyone made this type of move, and if so would they have any tips apart from what I've mentioned? Is there any areas around Rails/Ruby/Linux that I have to get up to speed with? Any and all tips are appreciated.

  • Use a Free Utility to Create Multiple Virtual Desktops in Windows

    - by Lori Kaufman
If you’ve used Linux, you’re probably familiar with the virtual desktop feature. It provides a convenient way to organize programs and folders open on your desktop. You can switch among multiple desktops and have different programs and folders open on each one. However, virtual desktops is a feature missing in Windows. There are many third-party options for adding virtual desktops to Windows, including one called Dexpot, which we have covered previously. Dexpot is free, but only for private use. Companies, public institutions, non-profit organizations, and even freelancers and self-employed people must buy the program. We found another virtual desktop tool that is completely free for everyone to use, called mDesktop. It’s a lightweight, open source program that allows you to switch among multiple desktops using hot keys and specify open programs or folders to be active on all desktops. You can use mDesktop to group related programs or to work on different projects on separate desktops. mDesktop is portable and does not need to be installed. Simply extract the .zip file you downloaded (see the link at the end of this article) and double-click the mDesktop.exe file. • What happens when my domain provider cancels order after domain transfer?

    - by Saifur Rahman Mohsin
I purchased 2 domains say xyz.in and abc.com on october 2012 and I got emails that they will be expiring on oct 2013. I called my local domain provider and told him I'd like to transfer the domain from Webiq to GoDaddy to which he said I cannot unless the domain is active. He asked me to pay for both the domains, renew it and then I could transfer the domain via the domain panel. When I went to the domain panel I noticed that the order was made and so I made a transfer which happened successfully. Just as he mentioned the period of validity (1 year) for each domain got transferred to GoDaddy as well! Additionally, I added 1 year of period to both the domain via GoDaddy so both of them and also GoDaddy provided an extra free year to both these domains as I paid for the transfer on 11/10/2013 at 9:18 PM MST so both of these were stated to be valid till 2016 and that's what it showed when I did a whois lookup as well. But now it suddenly shows me that my domains are getting expired this year (and the whois also shows 2015). This is confusing as I have no idea who to blame for the missing one year. I'm wondering what would have happened say if my old domain provider's client who got my domain registered cancelled the order. Since it was no longer under their control would they still be able to deduce that one year? When I tried submitting a support request to Webiq they replied: Your domain "abc.com" has been transferred away from us on 17-11-2013 and the domain "xyz.in" was transferred away from us on 18-01-2014. There are no order cancellation actions placed. If you have any billing related issues kindly contact your parent reseller. I need some guidance on explaining what issue might have occurred or understanding how this domain control works!
