• Android - determine specific locations (X,Y coordinates) on a Bitmap on different resolutions?

  My app that I am trying to create is a board game. It will have one bitmap as the board and pieces that will move to different locations on the board. The general design of the board is square, has a certain number of columns and rows and has a border for looks. Think of a chess board or scrabble board. Before using bitmaps, I first created the board and boarder by manually drawing it - drawLine & drawRect. I decided how many pixels in width the border would be based on the screen width and height passed in on "onSizeChanged". The remaining screen I divided by the number of columns or rows I needed. For examples sake, let's say the screen dimensions are 102 x 102. I may have chosen to set the border at 1 and set the number of rows & columns at 10. That would leave 100 x 100 left (reduced by two to account for the top & bottom border, as well as left/right border). Then with columns and rows set to 10, that would leave 10 pixels left for both height and width. No matter what screen size is passed in, I store exactly how many pixels in width the boarder is and the height & width of each square on the board. I know exactly what location on the screen to move the pieces to based on a simple formula and I know exactly what cell a user touched to make a move. Now how does that work with bitmaps? Meaning, if I create 3 different background bitmaps, once for each density, won't they still be resized to fit each devices screen resolution, because from what I read there were not just 3 screen resolutions, but 5 and now with tablets - even more. If I or Android scales the bitmaps up or down to fit the current devices screen size, how will I know how wide the border is scaled to and the dimensions of each square in order to figure out where to move a piece or calculate where a player touched. So far the examples I have looked at just show how to scale the overall bitmap and get the overall bitmaps width and height. But, I don't see how to tell how many pixels wide or tall each part of the board would be after it was scaled. When I draw each line and rectangle myself based in the screen dimensions from onSizeChanged, I always know these dimensions. If anyone has any sample code or a URL to point me to that I can a read about this with bitmaps, I would appreciate it. Thanks, --Mike BTW, here is some sample code (very simplified) on how I know the dimensions of my game board (border and squares) no matter the screen size. I've found some resources on using old COM libraries in .net applications, but allmost nothing on using new .NET libraries in COM applications (more spcecific: VB6 applications) Basically my search gave two useful resources: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms973915.aspx (Walkthrough by Steve Wight) There is allso the main MSDN article on the subject (No link because this is my first post, and I am only allowed one link) Is nobody else doing this, or am I the only one struggling to get my head around it? • Why / When / How is this Android serviceBinder resetting to null?

  I've written a ListActivity for Android 2.1 which is used to display a list of event categories. As the user selects a category, the program calls a web service to retrieve a list of sub-events. For example, a top level event might be "soccer" and when the user selects this the web service would return various soccer associations (e.g. "english", "french", "german", etc.) and display them in a new list. The following code seems to work occasionally, however sometimes the call to the service (in EventsListTask) fails because the serviceBinder is null. Is there anything I need to watch out for when doing this? Am I calling the target intent incorrectly?   Hi i have a problem programming with android SDK 1.6. I'm doing the same things of the "notepad exaple" but the programm crash when i try some query. If i try to do a query directly in to the DatabaseHelper create() metod it goes, but out of this function it doesn't.   I am running multiple Grails Applications on one of my servers. I am using Grails 1.2.2. I am using the default cache configuration in DataSource.groovy. When I try and run two Grails applications, they both seem to be using/writing to: /tmp/org.hibernate.cache.UpdateTimestampsCache.data When I look at how to customize Ehcache with an ehcache.xml file from this page: http://ehcache.org/documentation/grails.html I do not see any information about specifying the locations and/or names or temporary files. How do I avoid this issue when running multiple Grails applications on the same server (without turning off the cache)?

• Creating compound applications in Windows 7

  I need to port a suite of Windows applications (running under XP with little security turned on) to Windows 7 with various levels of security, depending on how our clients may configure it. Each functional area is a seperate executable or DLL that is downloaded and registered by a central 'compound' application. This means that the different parts are all joined together to form in effect a large single application. My problem is that the compound application knows about the other applications via COM registery, either as a typelibrary or as OCXs, where appropriate. I have tried several questions here to try and solve the problems I am getting, but I don't seem to be able to get around the problem of needing elevated access to register applications and access the registry. Our clients will be expecting the same (relatively) seemless download and activation process as current under XP. So does anyone have a solution for registering typelibraries and OCX controls without need to go through an elevation process. Thanks in advance

  Seems like most Rails applications have similar 'base' functionality. As such, it seems that there would be value in having pre-build Rails applications at various functionality points such as: basic User model with authentication using Authlogic #1 + openid integration #2 + authorization using declarative_authorization #3 + Administration module #4 + a Profile model Themes (useful stylesheets and such) Friendship model Geocoding ... In addition to the basic MVC stuff, these applications would include: testing harnesses seed data git support One could choose start from any of these functionality points. Other than the sample application that are available with the various gems/plugins, are there projects such as these? If not, I would certainly be willing to contribute what I have.

• Comparing 2 linq applications: Unexpected result

  I drafted 2 ASP.NET applications using LINQ. One connects to MS SQL Server, another to some proprietary memory structure. Both applications work with tables of 3 int fields, having 500 000 records (the memory structure is identical to SQL Server table). The controls used are regular: GridView and ObjectDataSource. In the applications I calculate the average time needed for each paging click processing. LINQ + MS SQL application demands 0.1 sec per page change. LINQ + Memory Structure demands 0.8 sec per page change. This Is shocking result. Why the application handling data in memory works 8 times slower than the application using hard drive? Can anybody tell me why that happens?

And, I believe that might be interesting for people where I live (Internet is not developed - but the cellphone networks are much better). So here are my questions: Where can I find documentation for beginners on that matter (And most importantly) Am I gonna be able to take advantage of acquired knowledge in .NET framework (C#, MVC, JQuery, XHTML, ...)? Am I gonna need my laptop or a special device to develop applications? Am I gonna need Visual Studio? And so on...   All, At my current company, we are looking to replace all ASP.NET Applications and OLTP databases with Sharepoint 2007. Our applications and databases deal with 10,000+ rows, and we have 5,000 + clients actively using the system. Our Implementation of sharepoint would replace all n-tier applications. Does anyone have an experience in implementing this? My current viewpoint is that Sharepoint is not built for or adequate enough to handle this type of application. Can it really replace application with hundreds of pages, and hundreds of tables? Support Data warehousing operations? Support high performance OLTP operations?   We have a desktop Java application running within a Citrix Metaframe server farm and the performance, specially while starting up the app, is very unreliable. Sometimes it takes 15 seconds and sometimes it takes over a minute. It's really unpredicatable. Is there any way to optimize running Java desktop applications within Citrix Metaframe Terminal server sessions to a more reliable performance level? Are there any optimization directed specifically toward Java, such as pre-load JVMs or something like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Install Applications on OpenSUSE 11.2 w/ GNOME desktop

  Being new to OpenSUSE (v.11.2) and the GNOME desktop, I am somewhat at a loss. The differences between installing applications on Windows (formerly XP & Windows for the last 15+ years) seem to be just different enough that I am having some difficulty. For instance, how do I determine what install package I would download? Then, how do I actually install a tar.gz file or rpm, or whatever? I tried updating the Flash driver for my FoxTabs addon in FireFox but got an error that the /tmp/ directory wasn't to be used to run media, or something to that affect. So, I thought I would try to figure out first how to determine what file package to download, then how to install. I'm not sure that I need an OpenSUSE for Dummies type of link, but something that explicitly details differences in everyday operations and corresponding equivalents between Windows and OpenSUSE/GNOME. I'm also looking for a good IRC chat client.

• Blocking internet poker applications

  I 'look after' the wireless internet for a cafe where I live, and we've noticed that there's quite a substantial slow down of internet speeds when certain users are playing internet poker. I've put in filters to block any HTTP traffic referencing gambling and poker etc, however I want to be able to block any applications (i.e. poker clients) which don't use HTTP. I've tried searching around for a list of poker clients and perhaps their ports, but have had no real luck. Does anyone know what these might be?

In order to access each of these apps (whether be it from the local network or the Internet), I have to enter a different port, e.g., http://server:8085 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8085 for Apache http://server:90 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:90 for FDM http://server:8081 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8081 for JDownloader I would like to be able to access them using sub-domains, e.g, http://apache.server or http://apache.xxxx.dyndns.org for Apache, http://fdm.server or http://fdm.xxxx.dyndns.org for FDM, http://jdownloader.server or http://jdownloader.xxxx.dyndns.org for JDownloader First of all, would it be possible like I want it, i.e., both from LAN and Internet, and if yes, how? Even if it's possible only for Internet, I would like to know how to do it, if there's a way.

• Windows 8 - can't drag files from Explorer and drop on applications

  In Windows 8 I find I can't drag files to applications like I've been able to do for as long as I can remember. Example: Drag MP3s to Winamp Drag folder full of music to Winamp Drag videos to VLC Drag txt, reg etc files to Notepad I have tried various combinations of: Running Explorer as administrator Running drop target as administrator Taking ownership of drop target application's folder Taking ownership of Explorer Changing user account to administrator Create a new user account Lowering UAC level Disabling UAC in GUI Disabling UAC in registry Running Explorer folders in a separate thread This is the last straw if there's no known proper (ie non hacky compromise) fix for this. "Little" things like this combined are a productivity nightmare and if I have to relearn so much and configure so much to get basic things done with an OS I might as well just move to Linux once and for all.

  My dad has a notebook and the key which has the "/?°" symbols acts like ctrl. Known factory problem. Anyway, his keyboard also has a "?" marked under the "w" key. Pressing "ctrl + alt + w" will display the "?" character (question, interrogation mark). Except on Office applications, like Word and Outlook, which will output "¿". I've searched Word and Outlook menus looking for a parameter that could be, somehow, remapping the notebooks keyboards, applying different regional configurations, language, or encodings. Since it only happens on Office apps, I believe the solution is within its options, but I was unable to find it where. Pressing "ctrl + alt gr + w" will display ? correctly, but I am stumped by this problem. I could remap the keys and make "/?° behave correctly, but my curiosity now is eating me alive. • Applications don't see mapped network drive after waking from sleep

  I have a network share mapped as a drive letter on a Windows 7 PC that's part of a simple home network. When I wake the PC from sleep, Explorer sometimes says the drive is disconnected. Doubleclicking the drive connects it instantly, as far as Explorer is concerned. But some other applications don't see the drive unless I take additional steps (e.g., navigate to the drive in an "Open..." dialog). Is there any way to get the drive to be connected for all purposes immediately when resuming from standby? I've found the "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" item in Group Policy, but I'm not sure what the setting does or whether it would fix this problem. I have network discovery enabled and un-firewalled.

Is a set of basic scripts a good means of attack? I was thinking about just having a ton of scripts, such as: setup_dev_env [install|uninstall|reinstall] setup_nfs [...] setup_nfs_share [...] setup_http [...] setup_memcache_node [...] Is there any better method? It would be nice to be able to "upgrade" an installation script too, for example, to change common development settings.
