  I'm writing my first android app (I'm a noob at android, but decent at java). The first screen of the app consists of a huge list (about 1.5K items) of Manga-objects. However, (this might be caused by the virtualization of the unit though), the result is really slow. Scrolling the list takes forever and you can only scroll small peaces of the time. How can I make the list work like the one in the contacts-app? So that when you start scrolling a handle pops out at the right side of the screen, and when you drag it letters shows up as of how far you've scrolled (the list is sorted alphabetically), and also, is there a way I could improve the performance of the list?

• How to handle ViewModel and Database in C#/WPF/MVVM App

  I have a task management program with a "Urgency" field. Valid values are Int16 currently mapped to 1 (High), 2 (Medium), 3 (Low), 4 (None) and 99 (Closed). The urgency field is used to rank tasks as well as alter the look of the items in the list and detail view. When a user is editing or adding a new task they select or view the urgency in a ComboBox. A Converter passes Strings to replace the Ints. The urgency collection is so simple I did not make it a table in the database, instead it is a, ObservableCollection(Int16) that is populated by a method. Since the same screen may be used to view a closed task the "Closed" urgency must be in the ItemsSource but I do not want the user to be able to select it. In order to prevent the user from being able to select that item in the ComboBox but still be able to see it if the item in the database has that value should I... Manually disable the item in the ComboBox in code or Xaml (I doubt it) Change the Urgency collection from an Int16 to an Object with a Selectable Property that the isEnabled property of the ComboBoxItem Binds to. Do as in 2 but also separate the urgency information into its own table in the database with a foreign key in the Tasks table None of the above (I suspect this is the correct answer) I ask this because this is a learning project (My first real WPF and first ever MVVM project). I know there is rarely one Right way to do something but I want to make sure I am learning in a reasonable manner since it if far harder to Unlearn bad habits Thanks Mike

• Ruby - Feedzirra and updates

  Hi, trying to get my head around Feedzirra here. I have it all setup and everything, and can even get results and updates, but something odd is going on. I came up with the following code: def initialize(feed_url) @feed_url = feed_url @rssObject = Feedzirra::Feed.fetch_and_parse(@feed_url) end def update_from_feed_continuously() @rssObject = Feedzirra::Feed.update(@rssObject) if @rssObject.updated? puts @rssObject.new_entries.count else puts "nil" end end Right, what I'm doing above, is starting with the big feed, and then only getting updates. I'm sure I must be doing something stupid, as even though I'm able to get the updates, and store them on the same instance variable, after the first time, I'm never able to get those again. Obviously this happens because I'm overwriting my instance variable with only updates, and lose the full feed object. I then thought about changing my code to this: def update_from_feed_continuously() feed = Feedzirra::Feed.update(@rssObject) if feed.updated? puts feed.new_entries.count else puts "nil" end end Well, I'm not overwriting anything and that should be the way to go right? WRONG, this means I'm doomed to always try to get updates to the same static feed object, as although I get the updates on a variable, I'm never actually updating my "static feed object", and newly added items will be appended to my "feed.new_entries" as they in theory are new. I'm sure I;m missing a step here, but I'd really appreciate if someone could shed me a light on it. I've been going through this code for hours, and can't get to grips with it. Obviously it should work fine, if I did something like: if feed.updated? puts feed.new_entries.count @rssObject = initialize(@feed_url) else Because that would reinitialize my instance variable with a brand new feed object, and the updates would come again. But that also means that any new update added on that exact moment would be lost, as well as massive overkill, as I'd have to load the thing again. Thanks in advance!

• Pop-up modal with UITableView on iPhone

  I need to pop up a quick dialog for the user to select one option in a UITableView from a list of roughly 2-5 items. Dialog will be modal and only take up about 1/2 of screen. I go back and forth between how to handle this. Should I subclass UIView and make it a UITableViewDelegate & DataSource? I'd also prefer to lay out this view in IB. So to display I'd do something like this from my view controller (assume I have a property in my view controller for DialogView *myDialog;) NSArray* nibViews = [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"DialogView" owner:myDialog options:nil]; myDialog = [nibViews objectAtIndex:0]; [self.view addSubview:myDialog]; problem is i'm trying to pass owner:myDialog which is nil as it hasn't been instantiated...i could pass owner:self but that would make my view controller the File's Owner and that's not how that dialog view is wired in IB. So that leads me to think this dialog wants to be another full blown UIViewController... But, from all I've read you should only have ONE UIViewController per screen so this confuses me because I could benefit from viewDidLoad, etc. that come along with view controllers... Can someone please straighten this out for me?

• Databinding between UserControls?

  I've got a situation where one of my UserControls would like to display a list of strings in a droplist, and the ItemsSource is set to another UserControl's ObservableCollection. The consumer of this data has its droplist defined in XAML like this: <ComboBox Grid.Column="1" SelectedItem="{Binding MyItem, Mode=TwoWay}" ItemsSource="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type UserControl}}, Path=DataContext.MyItems}" Margin="3"></ComboBox> MyItems is defined as an ObservableCollection<string> in the producer UserControl. Now everything works fine when the controls are loaded. As long as MyItems is populated first, and then the consumer UserControl is displayed, all of the items are there. I obviously don't get any errors in the Output Window or anything like that. The issue I have is that when the ObservableCollection is modified, those changes are not reflected in the consumer UserControl! I've never had this problem before, but all of my previous uses of ObservableCollection with updating the collection are within a single control, and databinding is not inter-UserControl. Is there something I did wrong? Is there a good way to actually debug this? Reed Copsey indicates here that inter-UserControl databinding is possible. Unfortunately, my favorite Bea Stollnitz article on WPF databinding debugging doesn't suggest anything that I could use for this particular problem.

• ListView + MultipleSelect + MVVM = ?

  If I were to say "the heck with it!", I could just give my ListView with SelectionMode="Multiple" a name, and be able to get all of the selected items very easily. But I'm trying to stick to MVVM as much as possible, and I want to somehow databind to an ObservableCollection that holds the value from the Name column for each selected item. How in the world do you do this? Single selection is simple, but the multi selection solution is not obvious to me with my current WPF / MVVM knowledge. I read this question on SO, and while it does give me some good insight, I don't know how to add the necessary binding to a row, because I am using a ListView with a GridView as its View, not a ListBox. Here's what my XAML basically looks like: <ListView DockPanel.Dock="Top" ItemsSource="{Binding ClientPreview}" SelectionMode="Multiple"> <ListView.View> <GridView AllowsColumnReorder="False"> <GridViewColumn Header="Name"> <GridViewColumn.CellTemplate> <DataTemplate> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=Name}" /> </DataTemplate> </GridViewColumn.CellTemplate> </GridViewColumn> <GridViewColumn Header="Address"> <GridViewColumn.CellTemplate> <DataTemplate> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=Address}" /> </DataTemplate> </GridViewColumn.CellTemplate> </GridViewColumn> </GridView> </ListView.View> </ListView> It sounds like the right thing to do is to databind each row's IsSelected property to each object stored in the ObservableCollection I'm databinding to. I just haven't figured out how to do this.

• C# PrintPreviewDialog Modification possible?

  Currently, what I'm doing is this: Using the built-in .NET PrintPreviewDialog Attaching my own Click handler to the Print button, which allows for the user to select the printer before finally printing. This all WORKS, HOWEVER, the OnprintToolStripButtonClick event is still sending the document to the default printer BEFORE the user gets to choose the actual printer and click Print (which works, but they're getting an extra copy on the default printer first from the old Handler). Can I remove this built-in Click handler? I've tried the other methods mentioned on here in regards to using an EventHandlerList to remove the handlers, but it doesn't work for the built-in printing event. Here is a copy of my current code in case it helps clarify: // ... • Binding a TreeView with ContextMenu in Xaml

  I'm pretty new to Xaml and need some advise. A TreeView should be bound to a hierarchical object structure. The TreeView should have a context menu, which is specific for each object type. Anyway all the bining samples I could find use TextBlock instead of TreeViewItem in the DataTemplate, but wonder how to integrate the ContextMenu there.

• C# - Get values of static properties from static class

  I'm trying to loop through some static properties in a simple static class in order to populate a combo box with their values, but am having difficulties. Here is the simple class: public static MyStaticClass() { public static string property1 = "NumberOne"; public static string property2 = "NumberTwo"; public static string property3 = "NumberThree"; } ... and the code attempting to retrieve the values: Type myType = typeof(MyStaticClass); PropertyInfo[] properties = myType.GetProperties( BindingFlags.Public | BindingFlags.Static | BindingFlags.DeclaredOnly); foreach (PropertyInfo property in properties) { MyComboBox.Items.Add(property.GetValue(myType, null).ToString()); } If I don't supply any binding flags then I get about 57 properties including things like System.Reflection.Module Module and all sorts of other inherited things I don't care about. My 3 declared properties are not present. If I supply various combinations of other flags then it always returns 0 properties. Great. Does it matter that my static class is actually declared within another non-static class? Please help! What am I doing wrong?

• Scaling a CBitmap - what am I doing wrong?

  I've written the following code, which attempts to take a 32x32 bitmap (loaded through MFC's Resource system) and turn it into a 16x16 bitmap, so they can be used as the big and small CImageLists for a CListCtrl. However, when I open the CListCtrl, all the icons are black (in both small and large view). Before I started playing with resizing, everything worked perfectly in Large View. • Django: Validation error in Admin

  NEWBIE ALERT! background: For the first time, I am writing a model that needs to be validated. I cannot have two Items that have overlapping "date ranges". I have everything working, except when I raise forms.ValidationError, I get the yellow screen of death (debug=true) or a 500 page (debug=false). My question: How can I have an error message show up in the Admin (like when you leave a required filed blank)? Sorry for my inexperience, please let me know if I can clarify the question better. • SQL MIN in Sub query causes huge delay

  I have a SQL query that I'm trying to debug. It works fine for small sets of data, but in large sets of data, this particular part of it causes it to take 45-50 seconds instead of being sub second in speed. This subquery is one of the select items in a larger query. I'm basically trying to figure out when the earliest work date is that fits in the same category as the current row we are looking at (from table dr) ISNULL(CONVERT(varchar(25),(SELECT MIN(drsd.DateWorked) FROM [TableName] drsd WHERE drsd.UserID = dr.UserID AND drsd.Val1 = dr.Val1 OR (((drsd.Val2 = dr.Val2 AND LEN(dr.Val2) > 0) AND (drsd.Val3 = dr.Val3 AND LEN(dr.Val3) > 0) AND (drsd.Val4 = dr.Val4 AND LEN(dr.Val4) > 0)) OR (drsd.Val5 = dr.Val5 AND LEN(dr.Val5) > 0) OR ((drsd.Val6 = dr.Val6 AND LEN(dr.Val6) > 0) AND (drsd.Val7 = dr.Val7 AND LEN(dr.Val2) > 0))))), '') AS WorkStartDate, This winds up executing a key lookup some 18 million times on a table that has 346,000 records. I've tried creating an index on it, but haven't had any success. Also, selecting a max value in this same query is sub second in time, as it doesn't have to execute very many times at all. Any suggestions of a different approach to try? Thanks!

• Binding from View-Model to View-Model of a child User Control in Silverlight? 2 sources - 1 target..

  Hi there, So i have a UserControl for one of my Views and have another 'child' UserControl inside that. The outer 'parent' UserControl has a Collection on its View-Model and a Grid control on it to display a list of Items. I want to place another UserControl inside this UserControl to display a form representing the details of one Item. The outer / parent UserControl's View-Model already has a property on it to hold the currently selected Item and i would like to bind this to a DependancyProperty on the inner / child UserControl. I would then like to bind that DependancyProperty to a property on the child UserControl's View-Model. I can then set the DependancyProperty once in XAML with a binding expression and have the child UserControl do all its work in its View-Model like it should. The code i have looks like this.. However from the DependancyProperty to the child View-Model does not. It appears to be a situation where there are two concurrent bindings which need to work but with the same target for two sources. Why won't the second (in the child UserControl) binding work?? Is there a way to acheive the behaviour I'm after?? Cheers.

• Error in Visual Studio 2008 with SSRS 2005 report projects

  Has anyone found a good workaound for opening or editing an SSRS 2005 report project with Visual Studio 2008 yet? Will the SQL server 2008 tools be the migration path for these report projects in the future? I really dont want to have to keep VS2005 installed forever just to update SSRS reports. After an upgrade to VS2008 an existing solution that contains a VS2005 SSRS reports project will not open. From what I understand the SQL Server 2005 tools dont know about VS2008 so they will not integrate into the IDE. So currently I switch back to VS2005 for any updates to this project, and get an error loading project message everytime I open the solution in 2008. EDIT on solution: I was able to install the shared component for BDIS from the SQL2008 disc and am now able to open and update my SSRS 2005 .rdl project items within VS2008. Note to others: If you edit your SSRS 2005 reports in VS2008 and re-save you will not be able to edit them in VS2005 anymore, or deploy them to a 2005 server. They are up-converted to 2008 report files.

• Click in a ListView item changes status of elements inside the item?

  Hi, I don't know exactly how to explain this problem, but I'll try. I have a ListView with several items. Each item has inside a TextView and two ImageView. I want the ImageView change when I click on them, and I want to open a context menu when I press for a long time into the ListView item. For the ImageView, everything works properly. For the whole item, I can show the context menu after a long press, but my problem is that the ImageView changes as well when I am pressing the TextView, for example.   My scenario: This is an ASP.NET 4.0 web app programmed via C# I implement a repository pattern. My repositorys all share the same ObjectContext, which is stored in httpContext.Items. Each repository creates a new ObjectSet of type E. Heres some code from my repository: public class Repository<E> : IRepository<E>, IDisposable where E : class { private DataModelContainer _context = ContextHelper<DataModelContainer>.GetCurrentContext(); private IObjectSet<E> _objectSet; private IObjectSet<E> objectSet { get { if (_objectSet == null) { _objectSet = this._context.CreateObjectSet<E>(); } return _objectSet; } } public IQueryable<E> GetQuery() { return objectSet; } Lets say I have 2 repositorys, 1 for states and 1 for countrys and want to create a linq query against both. Note that I use POCO classes with the entity framework. State and Country are 2 of these POCO classes. Repository stateRepo = new Repository<State>(); Repository countryRepo = new Repository<Country>(); IEnumerable<State> states = (from s in _stateRepo.GetQuery() join c in _countryRepo.GetQuery() on s.countryID equals c.countryID select s).ToList(); Debug.WriteLine(states.First().Country.country) essentially, I want to retrieve the state and the related country entity. The query only returns the state data... and I get a null argument exception on the Debug.WriteLine LazyLoading is disabled in my .edmx... thats the way I want it.

• Jmock mock DAO object

  Hi all, I wrote a method that retrieves certain list of strings, given a correct string key. Now when I create a list(the one to be retrieved by method descibed in previous sentence) and create test I can easily get results and test passes successfully. Now on the other hand if I save the content of this list to database in 2 columns, key and value I wrote a class which retrieves this items with method inside it. And when I print it out to console the expected results are correct, now I initialize my DAO from application context where inside its bean it gets session and because of DAO works. Now I'm trying to write a test which will mock the DAO, because I'm running test localy not on the server .. so I told jmock to mock it : private MyDAO myDAO; in the setup() myDAO = context.mock(MyDAO.class); I think I'm mocking it correctly or not, how can I mock this data from database? what is the best way? Is there somewhere good Jmock documentation? on their official site its not very good and clear, you have to know what you seek in order to find it, can't discover something cool in the mean time.

  I am currently working on a project where a lot of user interaction is going to take place. There is also a commercial side as people can buy certain items and services. In my opinion a good blend of user interface, speed and security is essential for these types of websites. It is fairly easy to use ajax and JavaScript nowadays to do almost everything, as there are a lot of libraries available such as jQuery and others. But this can have some performance and incompatibility issues. This can lead to users just going to the next website. The overall look of the website is important too. Where to place certain buttons, where to place certain types of articles such as faq and support. Where and how to display error messages so that the user sees them but are not bothering him. And an overall color scheme is important too. The basic question is: How to create an interface that triggers a user to buy/use your services I know psychology also plays a huge role in how users interact with your website. The color scheme for example is important. When the colors are irritating on a website you just want to click away. I have not found any articles that explain those concept. Does anyone have any tips and/or recourses where i can get some articles that guide you in making the correct choices for your website.

• Help with converting foreach loop to while loop in c#

  I had learnt by reading your great answers here, that it is not good practice deleting items from within a foreach loop, as it is (and I quote) "Sawing off the branch you're sitting on". My code currently removes the text from the dropdownlist, but the actual item remains (just without text displayed). In other words, it isn't deleting, and probably can't because you can't delete from within a foreach loop. After hours of trying I am unable to get my head around a way of doing it. //For each checked box, run the delete code for (int i = 0; i < this.organizeFav.CheckedItems.Count; i++) { //this is the foreach loop foreach (ToolStripItem mItem in favoritesToolStripMenuItem.DropDownItems) { //This rules out seperators if (mItem is ToolStripMenuItem) { ToolStripMenuItem menuItem = mItem as ToolStripMenuItem; //This matches the dropdownitems text to the CheckedItems String if (((ToolStripMenuItem)mItem).Text.ToString() == organizeFav.CheckedItems[i].ToString()) { //And deletes the item menuItem.DropDownItems.Remove(mItem); } } } } But it isn't deleting because it is within a foreach loop!
