• apt-fast for ubuntu 14.04?

  I just upgraded to ubuntu 14.04 from ubuntu 12.04 (Which I loved) and now, I cant install apt-fast. My net connection is very slow and I want to download using apt-fast but whenever I add the apt-fast ppa and update and try to install it, It says package apt-fast not found How do I fix this? thank you. I really appreciate The effort made by askubuntu (Which includes you awesome people ;)) To help me. My problem has already been answered. Here is a screenshot of my software sources. The person who answered my question has apparently removed the comment that answered my question but here is the repository that helped me add apt-fast sudo add-apt-repository ppa:saiarcot895/myppa So if this helps I would like to upvote each and every person who helped me and I will accept one answer too, Just give me some time to test both of them ;) anyway thank you guys to help me. • Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 Beta Released!

  Just thought I’d pass on the word that the Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 Beta is now available to download. VS2010 SP1 Beta ships with a go live license which means you can start using it for production work though I’m not sure I’m going to be that brave until I check it out a bit first. Jason Zanders has a blog post outlining the new features/fixes included in the beta. Here are a couple BREAKING news items you’ll want to TakeNote of… VS2010 SP1 Beta BREAKS ASP.NET MVC 3 RC Razor IntelliSense. A new ASP.NET MVC 3 RC2 installer will be released very soon that will allow you to upgrade in-place. VS2010 SP1 Beta BREAKS the Visual Studio Async CTP. • Prevent Apache restarting automatically after upgrading packages

  Following on from an earlier question: Is there a way to download security updates and notify admin without installing the update? A large number of packages interact with Apache (especially PHP) such that security updates to those packages can cause the server to attempt to restart the service. While my earlier question was answered, I'm now thinking that I need a different solution. So - is there are way to allow security updates to be applied using apt, have an email sent to an administrator, and, most importantly, prevent services from being restarted at the end of the installation/update process? The administrator will then be able to log in and restart the service manually.

• How do I install the btrfs-restore utility on 12.04?

  I would like to install btrfs-restore on Kubuntu 12.04 apt-cache search btrfs-restore returns nothing. Google "ubuntu download OR install btrfs-restore" returns nothing useful. Also, where do I get btrfs help? I'm not getting any replies on #btrfs on freenode.net. (Correction: I was too impatient. #btrfs was very helpful!) UPDATE: the previously accepted answer no longer works, so I unselected it as the answer. The PPA dmitrij.ledkov/ppa is missing now. Thanks to Pkunk at #btrfs, I posted a new solution below.

• Are all "Important security updates", updates to already installed packages?

  I'm running 12.04, and I've never downloaded any drivers for the installation of any peripheral devices. Yet, I noticed a fair few "Important security updates" involving drivers/utilities for HP devices/software. I understand if the default installation of Ubuntu came with a set of drivers for these devices - and the update manager, having noticed that they live on my system, went and found newer versions, but still - given I don't use any devices - I'm either forced to download an irrelevant update, sift through the updates to check applicability, or turn off Update Manager altogether: none of which are desirable. First; the obvious - can someone confirm that the list of "Important security updates" on the server that Update manager connects to, is not actually populated with every patch ever written (i.e. for all Ubuntu packages regardless of whether they're installed or not)? Unlikely, but..

• Installing Solaris Studio 12.2 on Ubuntu 10.04

  I'm having a dickens of a time installing Solaris Studio 12.2 on Ubuntu 10.04. I found this guide, however using the alien option isn't finding the correct files. I'm not exactly sure on the syntax of alien, its kinda alien to me. (sorry for the bad pun) Also, when I download the tar file, and extract it, there are errors everytime saying things like: "operation not permitted" cannot creat symlink to '../prod/bin/cc': Operation not permitted I've extracted with super user access, but to no avail. Any success from anyone else?

• How to safely collect bank account from website?

  I want to collect bank account information from my customers on my website. I'd like to do that trough a form, then I will download it to a PC, print it, and then delete it from the website. Or eventually, send it somewhere external right after the user submitted the form so it never gets stored on the website. The goal is to recieve the payment information without having to ask the customer to print, fill manually, and send it over fax. And accomplish this without having to use an external payment gateway. For example here: https://gist.github.com/1372818 I have 3 Buttons in the headline, they are edit download (un)star With the last one changing from star to unstar. My first idea was: Upvote system. But I can star my own code, and I didn't mention some star appearing somewhere. Next idea: a favorite, a bookmark. I can select 'starred gists' but the page came up even before I starred it. Reading the Help didn't let me find something about 'star', and the searchbox is for searching in code, in pages - not to search the helppages of github::gist.

• Install wireless driver for an HP ProBook 4525s

  Hey, I need to install the wifi driver to ubuntu. so I downloaded the driver from hp website but the extension is .rpm, so I need to convert him to .deb so I can install it on ubuntu. The problem is I don't have internet connection on ubuntu to do this : sudo apt-get install alien how can convert the driver on windows for example, or how can I do download alien and place it under my usb to install it after booting on ubuntu. • EL 3.0 Public Review - JSR 341 and Java EE 7 Moving Along

  Following closely on the lines of EL 3.0 Early Draft, the specification is now available for a Public Review. The JCP2 Process Document defines different stages of the specifications. This review period closes Jul 30, 2012. Some of the main goals of the JSR are to separate ELContext into parsing and evaluation contexts, adding operators like equality, string concatenation, etc, and integration with CDI. The section A.7 of the specification highlights the difference between Early Draft and Public Review. Download the Public Review and and follow the updates at el-spec.java.net. For more information about EL 3.0 (JSR 341), check out the JSR project on java.net. • Authentication failure!

  At the time of installation i gave login password and that was the login keyring password and authentication password.. then once in user accounts-login options in dat for password options i set as none and then i locked.. after that the passwd which i gave at the time of installation remained as login keyring passwd but wen i entered that passwd for authentication while installing some packages it's showing authentication failure.pls try again.. so i couldnt download any packages or updates.. is there any possibilities to change/reset the authentication password.. pls help me..

• Problem with installing programs

  I am unable to install programs for the Ubuntu 10.10 system. These download ok, but when attempting to install them, the following message is displayed: AN ERROR OCCURRED WHILE OPENING THE ARCHIVE END-OF-CENTRAL-DIRECTORY SIGNATURE NOT FOUND etc....... ZIPINFO: CANNOT FIND ZIPFILE DIRECTORY IN etc...... As I am new to Ubuntu and also fairly "green" as far as computer terminology is concerned, I have no idea what this means and don't have a clue on how to fix it. Can you help please? • What are some easy techniques to scan books for new information?

  I find it irresistible to keep purchasing cheap programming and technical e-books in fields such as Drupal, PHP, etc., and also compulsively download free material made available such as those from Microsoft's developer blog... The main problem with the large library I've developed is that there are many chapters (especially the first few) in these books packed with information I already know, but with helpful tidbits hidden in between. The logical step would be to skip those chapters and read the ones I don't seem to know anything about, but I'm afraid I may lose out on really important information this way. But naturally it is tedious to have to read about variables, functions and objects all over again when you are trying to know more about the Registry pattern, for example. It's hard to research on the net for this, because my question itself seems vague and difficult to formulate into a single search query. I need people-advice - what do you do in this situation?

  I am searching for a good recourse where I can advertise my open source project. I have made a web-development framework which I want to make available to download, and I want to target a large audience. It is an open source project so I make no money off of it, so I do not really want to pay for advertisement. I already pay for the server where the website runs, and I have spent a lot of time developing it. I opened account on various search engines webmaster tools, so people can find it on there. I have also made a video-sharing account where I uploaded a few tutorials. This can accumulate some traffic also. Can someone recommend any more places to get your work spread.

• Any suggestions how it would be good to promote software in a small company ?

  Ok, I know if I am Red hat or other giant and offer some support etc. I can be profitable, in fact, Red Hat is doing quite well. However, what about a small company where I create a small program. e.g. an instant messenger for a windows or linux (just as an illustration) and I want to sell it. But how can I sell it if it is free and everybody can download it? Any advice? I like the idea of FSF by Richard Stallman, however I am missing the way how to sell my software under GNU/GPL licence. Any advice, how can I solve this problem? Any profitable small business software developers around with their opinion? Any links or names of small companies taht I can look at and study their model of business?

• Rationale behind freeware projects

  I've seen some freeware projects in the past where the author(s) invested a significant amount of their personal time and resources and never even considered charging for the software. A lot of these projects were donation based, and from what I've heard, donationware can never be a viable business model (even to simply support development costs) because most people choose not to donate if given an option. A lot of these projects eventually shut down because their authors could not sustain them further. Granted, some people simply like making the community happy (or something), but if you're struggling to keep your project alive, why not charge some small amount such as $10 simply to stay operational? If people find your software useful (and a lot of people found those projects VERY useful) they won't have a problem paying such a small amount. The question is: if you have a popular app that people like and download in great numbers, why not put a price tag on it? Why do it for free?

• Microdata Without Reviews

  I have not been able to find a clear issue on omitting reviews from Microdata. I understand that Microdata values for reviews will default to a certain number when omitted, but I was wondering if it would be correct/acceptable to completely omit the review node completely. I can see where reviews and average "star" ratings would be of help to the end user, especially for things like recipes. However, what if there are no reviews for a product or application? To be completely clear - let's isolate this question to only software applications or extensions. What if a particular piece of software or extension was not featured on an "app store" or other site that provided reviews? Wouldn't the formats still be helpful by providing version number, download URL, compatible software - etc? Sorry for the lengthy background, but I just don't understand why it seems that reviews must be part of a Microdata markup. Or, am I wrong in this assumption?
