  Hi, I'd like to set a property of an object through reflection, with a value of type string. So, for instance, suppose I have a Ship class, with a property of Latitude, which is a double. Here's what I'd like to do: Ship ship = new Ship(); string value = "5.5"; PropertyInfo propertyInfo = ship.GetType().GetProperty("Latitude"); propertyInfo.SetValue(ship, value, null); As is, this throws an Argument exception (Object of type 'System.String' cannot be converted to type 'System.Double'). How can I convert value to the proper type, based on propertyInfo?

• How are lists implemented in Haskell (GHC)?

  I was just curious about some exact implementation details of lists in Haskell (GHC-specific answers are fine)--are they naive linked lists, or do they have any special optimizations? More specifically: Do length and (!!) (for instance) have to iterate through the list? If so, are their values cached in any way (i.e., if I call length twice, will it have to iterate both times)? Does access to the back of the list involve iterating through the whole list? Are infinite lists and list comprehensions memoized? (i.e., for fib = 1:1:zipWith (+) fib (tail fib), will each value be computed recursively, or will it rely on the previous computed value?) Any other interesting implementation details would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  Can someone explain how MapReduce works with Cassandra .6? I've read through the word count example, but I don't quite follow what's happening on the Cassandra end vs. the "client" end. https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/cassandra/trunk/contrib/word_count/ For instance, let's say I'm using Python and Pycassa, how would I load in a new map reduce function, and then call it? Does my map reduce function have to be java that's installed on the cassandra server? If so, how do I call it from Pycassa? There's also mention of Pig making this all easier, but I'm a complete Hadoop noob, so that didn't really help. Your answer can use Thrift or whatever, I just mentioned Pycassa to denote the client side. I'm just trying to understand the difference between what runs in the Cassandra cluster vs. the actual server making the requests.

• ASP.NET MVC unit test controller with HttpContext

  I am trying to write a unit test for my one controller to verify if a view was returned properly, but this controller has a basecontroller that accesses the HttpContext.Current.Session. Everytime I create a new instance of my controller is calls the basecontroller constructor and the test fails with a null pointer exception on the HttpContext.Current.Session. • How can I deploy my .NET app to Amazon EC2?

  I have a .NET Windows service and a .NET Web Application that I would like to deploy to my Amazon EC2 Windows 2008 instances. At this point, all I need to do is to copy the zipped files across to the EC2 box and remote desktop to the EC2 instance and finish the deployment. In order to do this, I have tried LogMeIn Hamachi2 to create a P2P VPN and use RoboCopy to copy the files, however it seems Hamachi doesn't work on Windows EC2. What is your solution for deploying your .NET apps to Windows EC2 instances? I want to avoid running an FTP server on the box just to get my files up on the server and don't have a VPN server (like OpenVPN) running to run a cloud based VPN solution. Perhaps I can find a simple way of using Amazon S3 as a strategy? Any ideas? Suggestions?

• A function's static and dynamic parent

  I'm reading Thinking in C++ (vol. 2): Whenever a function is called, information about that function is pushed onto the runtime stack in an activation record instance (ARI), also called a stack frame. A typical stack frame contains (1) the address of the calling function (so execution can return to it), (2) a pointer to the ARI of the function’s static parent (the scope that lexically contains the called function, so variables global to the function can be accessed), and (3) a pointer to the function that called it (its dynamic parent). The path that logically results from repetitively following the dynamic parent links is the dynamic chain, or call chain I'm unable to comprehend what the author means as function's static and dynamic parent. Also am not able to differentiate between item 1, 2 or 3. They all seem to be the same. Can someone please explain this passage to me?

  Scenario: Entity Framework 4 , POCO templates and Master Detail relation. Lets say I have a master type like this: //partial implementation of master entity partial class Master { public void AddDetail(x,y,z) { var detail = new Detail() { X = x, Y = y, Z = z, }; //add the detail to the master this.Details.Add(detail); } } If I then add a master instance to my context and commit, the details will not be saved: var masterObject = new Master(); masterObject.AddDetail(1,2,3); myContext.MasterSet.AddObject(masterObject); Is there any way to make the details to be persisted by reachabillity when using POCO templates? Or any other way? the Details collection in the Master entity is a FixUpCollection, so it ought to track the changes IMO. So, any ideas how to make this work W/O killing the POCO'ness too much?

• Silverlight 4 - encoding PCM data from the microphone

  Hi I've written a basic SL4 application to capture audio data from the microphone using CaptureSource. The trouble is, it's raw PCM output - which means huge and uncompressed. Given that I need this application to run purely within a SL4 environment, how can I compress the PCM audio data into something that can be delivered to a remote server more easily? In conversation, people have suggested Speex and WMA for instance, but I haven't found any libraries or examples that work without requiring reference to DLL's that won't work in a SL4 project.   I'm building a few SharePoint sites, and I want to make use of zones so I may set security different in the various zones. My workstation has a local SharePoint, and I use it for development. My workstation has a static IP, and is connected to the internet. When I make a SharePoint site, I want to add a host header, for instance, devbox.com. I do not own this name, nor do I want to. I then add an entry in my hosts file, but when I surf to http://devbox.com:8080, it does not resolve. Do I need to register the name I want to use, or should this work, i.e., have my hosts file resolve names/IPs first?

  For performance tests I need a way to measure the time needed for a form to load its definition from the DFM. All existing forms inherit a custom form class. To capture the current time, this base class needs overriden methods as "extension points": start of the deserialization process after the deserialization (can be implemented by overriding the Loaded procedure) the moment just before the execution of the OnFormCreate event So the log for TMyForm.Create(nil) could look like: - 00.000 instance created - 00.010 before deserialization - 01.823 after deserialization - 02.340 before OnFormCreate Which TObject (or TComponent) methods are best suited? Maybe there are other extension points in the form creation process, please feel free to make suggestions.

  I am setting a Session variable in an HttpHandler, and then getting its value in the Page_load event of an ASPX page. I'm setting it using public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { HttpPostedFile file = context.Request.Files["Filedata"]; context.Session["WorkingImage"] = file.FileName; } (And before someone suggests that I check the validity of file.FileName, this same problem occurs if I hard-code a test string in there.) It's working just fine in IE, but in Firefox the Session Variable is not found, getting the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error in the following code: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { string loc = Session["WorkingImage"].ToString(); } Has anyone encountered this problem - and hopefully come up with a means for passing the session variable?

• Kohonen SOM Maps: Normalizing the input with unknown range

  According to "Introduction to Neural Networks with Java By Jeff Heaton", the input to the Kohonen neural network must be the values between -1 and 1. It is possible to normalize inputs where the range is known beforehand: For instance RGB (125, 125, 125) where the range is know as values 0 and 255: 1. Divide by 255: (125/255) = 0.49 (0.49,0.49,0.49) 2. Multiply by two and subtract one: ((0.49*2)-1)=-0.02 (-0.02,-0.02,-0.02) The question is how can we normalize the input where the range is unknown like our height or weight. Also, some other papers mention that the input must be normalized to the values between 0 and 1. Which is the proper way, "-1 and 1" or "0 and 1"?

• Javascript incapable of getting element's max-height via element.style.maxHeight

  I am making a simple accordion menu in javascript. I'd like to be able to set the compact and expanded heights for the elements via the css max-height and min-height values. For some reason, when I try to retrieve the min-height and max-height of the elements in javascript for animation purposes, I get an empty string rather than, for instance, "500px" like it should. The max-height value is set in css, e.g. #id { min-height: 40px; max-height: 500px; } is all set up, but when I put a debugging mechanism in my javascript such as alert( item.style.minHeight ); it pops up an empty alert box. This happens in Firefox 3.6.2 and IE 8. Does anybody know why javascript refuses to be able to get an element's minHeight and maxHeight?

My understanding was that delegates take responsibility for doing certain tasks on behalf of another object. locationManager = [[CLLocationManager alloc] init]; [locationManager setDelegate:self]; [locationManager setDistanceFilter:kCLDistanceFilterNone]; [locationManager setDesiredAccuracy:kCLLocationAccuracyBest]; [locationManager startUpdatingLocation]; Am I right in thinking that in the example code above that the instance of CLLocationManager is created on a new thread so that it can get on with trying to find the location information it needs. When it completes its task (or encounters an error) it calls-back using the appropriate methods located in self e.g. locationManager:didUpdateToLocation:fromLocation: Essentially locationManager sends messages to self (which conforms to the correct delegate protocol) when things happen cheers gary

  Hi, I have a button in a view which refuses to work. I've got in working in a blank, default view application from X-Code, but in none of my applications will it work, instead it gives me the following error. Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '* -[UIViewController showVicInfo:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3c084f0' The debugger isn't any help either. I've made sure that I hook up the button to the file's owner (not the other way around) as well. Below is the code for the action. • Re-Apply currency formatting to a UITextField on a change event

  Howdy all, I'm working with a UITextField that holds a localized currency value. I've seen lots of posts on how to work with this, but my question is: how do I re-apply currency formatting to the UITextField after every key press? I know that I can set up and use a currency formatter with: NSNumberFormatter *currencyFormatter = [[NSNumberFormatter alloc] init]; [currencyFormatter setNumberStyle:NSNumberFormatterCurrencyStyle]; ... [currencyFormatter stringFromNumber:...]; but I don't know how to hook it up. For instance, if the value in the field reads "$12,345" and the user taps the "6" key, then the value should change to "$123,456". Which callback is the "correct" one to do this in (should I use textField:shouldChangeCharactersInRange:replacementString: or a custom target-action) and how do I use the NSNumberFormatter to parse and re-apply formatting to the UITextField's text property? • Throwing an exception from a BackgroundWorker which calls an async. method (Webrequest)

  Hi, My main application creates a new BackgroundWorker X the DoWork event handler of X calls a method Y of my controller. This method creates the WebRequest (async.) instance and the callback using AsyncCallback. When the response arrives the callback method Z gets called and the content will be analyzed. It can happen that the response has an unwanted content. At that moment callback Z will throw an exception. I want to catch this exception in my main application. I tried it in DoWork and RunWorkerCompleted but nothing can be caught from there. Error in RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs is always null.
