• Clustered index on frequently changing reference table of one or more foreign keys

  My specific concern is related to the performance of a clustered index on a reference table that has many rapid inserts and deletes. Table 1 "Collection" collection_pk int (among other fields) Table 2 "Item" item_pk int (among other fields) Reference Table "Collection_Items" collection_pk int, item_pk int (combined primary key) Because the primary key is composed of both pks, a clustered index is created and the data physically ordered in the table according to the combined keys. I have many users creating and deleting collections and adding and removing items to those collections very frequently affecting the "Collection_Items" table, and its clustered index. QUESTION PART: Since the "Collection_Items" table is so dynamic, wouldn't there be a big performance hit on constantly resorting the table rows because of the clustered index ? If yes, what should I do to minimize this ?

  Is there a way to control the output filenames of an Hadoop Streaming job? Specifically I would like my job's output files content and name to be organized by the ket the reducer outputs - each file would only contain values for one key and its name would be the key.   Guys, I have been looking for a portable method to digitally sign arbitrary text which can be placed in a document and distributed while maintaining its verifiable origin. Here is an example: a = 'some text' a.sign(<private key>) # => <some signature in ASCII format> The contents of a can now be distributed freely. If a receiver wants to check the validity of said text they can do the following: b = 'some text' b.valid(<public key>, <signature supplied with text>) # => true/false Is there any library out there that already offers this kind of functionality? • Simple integer encryption

  Is there a simple algorithm to encrypt integers? That is, a function E(i,k) that accepts an n-bit integer and a key (of any type) and produces another, unrelated n-bit integer that, when fed into a second function D(i,k) (along with the key) produces the original integer? Obviously there are some simple reversible operations you can perform, but they all seem to produce clearly related outputs (e.g. consecutive inputs lead to consecutive outputs). Also, of course, there are cryptographically strong standard algorithms, but they don't produce small enough outputs (e.g. 32-bit). I know any 32-bit cryptography can be brute-forced, but I'm not looking for something cryptographically strong, just something that looks random. Theoretically speaking it should be possible; after all, I could just create a dictionary by randomly pairing every integer. But I was hoping for something a little less memory-intensive.

• Does Visual Studio 2010 on x64 crash often? Or is it just on my PC?

  MY VS2010 crashes dozens of times a day. Compare that to 2008 and 2005 which were rock solid. Is 2010 known to be susceptible to crashing? Or could it be my environment? I'm using x64 as a dev box for the first time. The only plugin I has so far is Ankh. It crashes when doing different things. One I've noticed so far that always happens is if I press the key sequence alt-f-s-up (or any cursor key) it will crash every time.

I have two javascript routines.. the first one declares some JSON and it contains a function that takes two arguments, the first argument being the json object that needs traversing and the second argument is the tab that the rendering is done in. The second routine merely passes the name of the JSON that needs traversing and tab to render in. Putting an alert box (alert(json)) in to check the value of json yields.... [object.Object],[object.Object] The JSON object remains elusive. I thought I could do it via an UPDATE containing a JOIN, but Access (I know...) is complaining with 'Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression ' and then everything from 'Barmy' here: UPDATE tB SET tB.BValue='Barmy' FROM TableB tB INNER JOIN TableA tA ON tB.AID=tA.AID WHERE tB.Name='Beta' AND tA.Name='Alpha'; What is my heinous crime? There are many threads iterating this loop and based on the key they are looking for, a lazy instance is created and returned. lazyObject should not be created more that one time. Although Lazy class is for doing so and despite of the used lock, under high threading I have more than one instance created (I track this with a Interlocked.Increment on a volatile shared int and log it somewhere). The problem is I don't have access to definition of Lazy and MEF defines how the Lazy class create objects. My questions: 1) Why the lock doesn't work ? 2) Should I use an array of locks instead of one lock for performance improvement ?

  I am going to write a mapper and reducer for the kmeans algorithm, I think the best course of action to do is putting the distance calculator in mapper and sending to reducer with the cluster id as key and coordinates of row as value. In reducer, updating the centroids would be performed. I am writing this by python. As you know, I have to use Hadoop streaming to transfer data between STDIN and STOUT. according to my knowledge, when we print (key + "\t"+value), it will be sent to reducer. Reducer will receive data and it calculates the new centroids but when we print new centroids, I think it does not send them to mapper to calculate new clusters and it just send it to STDOUT and as you know, kmeans is a iterative program. So, my questions is whether Hadoop streaming suffers of doing iterative programs and we should employ MRJOB for iterative programs?

  I am working on a refactoring of some services and would appreciate some critique on my general approach. I am working with three back-end data systems and need to expose an authenticated front-end API over http binding, JSON, and REST for internal apps as well as 3rd party integration. I've got a rough idea below that's a hybrid of what I have and where I intend to wind up. I intend to build guidance extensions to support this architecture so that devs can build this out quickly. Here's the current idea for our structure: Front-end WCF routing service (spread across multiple IIS servers via hardware load balancer) Load balancing of services behind routing is handled within routing service, probably round-robin One of the services will be a token Multiple bindings per-service exposed to address JSON, REST, and whatever else comes up later All in/out is handled via POCO DTOs Use unity to scan for what services are available and expose them The front-end services behind the routing service do nothing more than expose the API and do conversion of DTO<-Entity Unity inject service implementation to allow mocking automapper for DTO/Entity conversion Invoke WF services where response required immediately Queue to ESB for async WF -- ESB will invoke WF later Business logic WF layer Expose same api as front-end services Implement business logic Wrap transaction context where needed Call out to composite/atomic services Composite/Atomic Services Exposed as WCF One service per back-end system Standard atomic CRUD operations plus composite operations Supports transaction context The questions I have are: Are the separation of concerns outlined above beneficial? Current thought is each layer below is its own project, except the backend stuff, where each system gets one project. The project has a servicehost and all the services are under a services folder. Interfaces live in a separate project at each layer. DTO and Entities are in two separate projects under a shared folder. I am currently planning to build dedicated services for shared functionality such as logging and overload things like tracelistener to call those services. Is this a valid approach? Any other suggestions/comments?

• qt custom widgets propertis are not getting updated properly in Qt designer

  I have created a custom widget. The widget gets loaded fine,the properties appear in QT Designer, Only problem is every time I change the property of Alpha key,the numeric also gets set, Though the accessor functions are different,and the enums are differnet and values are different. Also whenever i check the Form-view code,the values would have got modified. I have table named inventory which has: trans_id trans_items items -> item_id trans_user employees -> person_id trans_date trans_comment trans_inventory As you can see above, trans_items is a foreign key in items table, and trans_user is a foreign key in employees table. Now what I want to do is to display in HTML the inventory table, but instead of displaying the item id, I want the ITEM NAME to be displayed. Here is what I have done. • Taking 2 attributes from XElement to create a dictionary LINQ

  I'm trying to take one attribute to use as the key, and another to use as the value. If I use (xDoc is an XDocument object in the example): Dictionary<string, XElement> test = xDoc.Descendants() .Where<XElement>(t => t.Name == "someelement") .ToDictionary<XElement, string>(t => t.Attribute("myattr").Value.ToString()); I get a dictionary with the myattr value as key (which is what I want) but the entire XElement object as the value. What I want to do, is to select a second attribute to set as the value property on each dictionary item, but can't seem to figure that out. Is it possible to do all of this in 1 Linq statement? • symfony 1.4 embedForm not returning all embedded forms

  I have a form with multiple embedded forms and symfony is not binding all the embedded forms. The layout is a m-to-m layout: activity: id: link: id: activity_id: FOREIGN KEY to activity table other_data_id: FOREIGN KEY to other_data table other_data: id: For instance I have 7 identical embedded forms iterated at the end of each name (ie- form_1, form_2, ..., form_7). With the new and edit forms all the 7 fields display properly, but when I submit the form, the embedded forms after a certain number just aren't in the embedded forms array of the sfForm. I have two different embedded forms, the first form stops binding at 5 and the second form stops binding at 4. I've looked at the array of posted values through $request->getPostParameters(); and all the fields are there. If I manually enter the data into the database, the binding works without a problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
