• Linux software RAID 10 implementation

  Hello there! I don't want to force anybody to make it on behalf of me but trust me: i've looked hundreds of sites and i can't find a good starting point for this. I have 4x500Gb HDD's which i want to set up in RAID 10. The most promising description is here, but it's a little old and unclear for me, above all i prefer Debian over Ubuntu (i know there are slight or no differences). Is it possible to build RAID 10 with Debian's installer or i need to build RAID 1 first in the installer then use mdadm later? What is the best practice for building software RAID 10 under Linux (Debian)? Thanks for your time, fabrik

• Skype 2.1beta for Linux and sound quality

  I've been using Skype 2.1beta for Linux with my bluetooth headset and quality of the sound is just awful. But not always though, if I call echo service, quality is acceptable, but when I call real people there's echo, sound is crippling, there's pauses, voice is unrecognizable, all sorts of quality problems in one call. If I use newest Skype under WIndows with the same headset to call to the same people, quality is more than normal. So, is there some settings I can tweak, like tell Skype which codec to use or maybe there's noise cancellation plugin for PulseAudio I can use or any other system setting I can try to play with?

• Outgoing mail from linux not being delivered

  I can't seem to send mail through my php scripts or through the linux console on my Centos 5.5 LAMP server, when the email is addressed to go to a domain that is hosted by my box. I think it is something to do with the email routing internally, or the DNS servers that the box uses not reporting the correct MX records. Basically my box doesn't host any mail, it's all hosted on google apps. My name servers are hosted by a 3rd party provider and I am using webmin. Webmin doesn't recognise the settings on the 3rd party provider. I'm unsure how to fix this. Previously when I had this problem on a cpanel server, I would edit the remotedomains and localdomains files, moving domains from one file to another and it would fix the problem. What information do I need to provide for anyone to work out what the issue is? Thanks

  (1) Is it true that the new GUID Partition Table scheme allows a user to partition a drive however he/she like, outside of the traditional MBR "4 primaries or 3 primaries + 1 extension" paradigm? If so, are there any limitations to the GPT? If my assumption is wrong, what are its advantages over the MBR model? (2) I'm getting a new laptop this week and will be installing Ubuntu (and, more generally, Linux) for the first time ever. Does Ubunutu come pre-configured with MBR as a default? If so, how do I get Ubuntu w/ GPT? If not, how do I specify GPT over MBR? Thanks!

• ubuntu 12.10/linux mint 14 ssh-copy-id doesn't work and returns Ambiguous output redirect

  I recently got a new computer and I'm trying to use ssh-copy-id to put my keys on another server so I can login without password. but when I try ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub user@server and after inputting the correct password it returns Ambiguous output redirect. There are no other messages after that. I thought it was maybe just Ubuntu 12.10 so I installed Linux Mint 14 and sure enough exact same thing happens. I've tried removing authorized_keys from the remote server but that didn't change anything.

• Accessing Windows 7 Printer from Ubuntu Linux via LPR/LPD or Samba

  Hi, I'm having difficulty printing from my Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) based PC to a printer connected to a Windows 7 machine. I was trying to connect using Samba (version 3.5.6) but this always brings up an authentication screen which never accepts any password I use. So I read somewhere that an alternative is to access the Windows printer via LPR/LPD. I added an LPR/LPD printer in Windows 7, but even within Windows 7, I am not able to print as the print que monitor shows as 'printer busy'. The printer in question is an Epson Stylus DX7400 and works fine when using the standard USB ports....but doesn't when I use with the LPR/LPD ports. I even opened up the TCP/IP port 515 in my McAfee firewall without any success. Any help with this would be highly appreciated. Additionally, does anyone have any idea how I can get Samba working for me?

• Debian Linux server hangs after a week or so

  I have 2 Debian Linux 6.0.4 servers that have a strange behaviour: after 5-7-10 days they hang. By this I mean the servers need to be restarted and before that ping won't answer. I've been struggling with this problem for a couple of months now and here's some thoughts/what I tried without being able to solve the problem. I changed the RAM on a server. Being 2 different servers I doubt that it could be something related to hardware as a 3rd identical server won't have this problem. I logged the server load and when it crashes the load is fine (quite low) I cannot find anything in the server logs, logs are fine till the server freezes. I don't have access to console unfortunately. While I have years of admin experience I have never encountered such an issue and right now I have no idea where else to investigate. If you have an idea of what I could try in order to fix the problem please share it with me:-)

• ASP.NET, URL Rewriting and threads on Linux?

  Right now converting my normal sql(ite) syntax into compatible MS Server syntax is driving me mad. My code seems to be mono compatible judging by MoMA. However in global.asax i start several threads in Application_Start to use as a service and excessive url rewrites in Application_BeginRequest (everything is rewriting into default.aspx which calls C# code/class baded on the url). The urls do not have extensions or my have false extentions ie mysite.com/username/page/title.lol - id I need it all to go to BeginRequest. I also need files to be downloadable. Usually the path will be rewritten as from /file/user/filename to /file/u/s/user/file. Would this be supported on linux+mono+a good webserver?

What are the tools and techniques used when making a backup. for e.g when a backup fails on a machine, it should email the admin about the failure and also a log file. This won't happen incase the HDD fails and the system is completely out of work, but in other cases where a backup didn't take place, the admin should be able to know.   I've been asked to move data from an old external hard drive to a new one, and to make the new one compatible with the Macintosh. (The old drive's USB connection has died, and I'm connecting to old the drive using a PC card that provieds an eSATA to the drive. The recipient's Macintosh doesn't have a PC card slot, so she can't access the old drive anymore. Hence, the new drive.) Naturally, I'm doing this data transfer using Linux. I've discovered that I can format the drive as HFS+ using mkfs.hfsplus from the hfsprogs package. But I need to know: do I need to do anything special with the partition table? Is there a special Macintosh partition table format that I need to format this disk to? If so, what tools can I use to get the right format for the partition table?

  What are some solutions to access Windows by its computer name from Linux and Mac using TCP/IP. That is, from terminal I want to be able to ping my Windows PCs using its host name. My setup is: Various machines running Ubuntu, Windows XP and OS X. Networked using a consumer grade wireless router which provides DHCP. The only DNS is the ISP's, which resolves Internet names and not local host names. The Windows machines can ping each other by name. The Ubuntu and OS X machines can only ping Windows by IP address (name doesn't work).

  Hello I'm having a large problem with our development server, it have had a program called Webmin + a total idiot have been administrating the Linux sever. Witch now have resulted in the server being totally trashed, there are so many different kinds of the same program install that anything doesn’t work. And don't get me started on the users and groups :D Well at last I have been given the responsibility to administrate our development server. But I would like to start from scratch, instead of trying to find every single package and config the previous admin have **ed up.   Hi. I'd like to have very responsive linux but I also like modern, elegant and functional desktops like gnome or kde, not the lightweight ones like xfce or lxde. Once I tried PuppyLinux and was impressed by the responsivity when I clicked an application. In my Ubuntu, it bothers me much when I click chromium and must wait 5 seconds of disk flashing until main window appears. Or evolution or anything else. Is it possible to make GNOME or KDE run entirely in RAM like PuppyLinux (of course, I mean frequently used applications and services, not all) if you have enough of it? I don't care if boot time is longer. I tried using "preload" but it didn't help much.

Here's what I got: plink 1.2.3.4 -l root -pw mypassword -m hello.sh Is there a way to do this same thing, but able to give input parameters to hello.sh?   I'm using windows xp, vista, server 2008 R2, ubuntu-linux 9.10, 9.04, 8.10 desktop editions. I shared some folders/directories in windows and in ubuntu machines. Normally for the first time it's prompted for the password when tried to access the shared folders on either of the machine and again they prompt for the password when the system is rebooted. Recently I've created a batch and sh script which copies from the shared folders from windows to ubuntu and vice-versa. But the scripts cannot automate the password prompt and I'm wondering if I could disable the password prompt of the shared folders on windows and as well as on ubuntu machines so that my script runs smoothly. I don't know if it's possible or not but want to confirm posting here and if it is then nothing but saying need help...!. Thanks all!

• Need hard disk recommendation for linux home server.

  Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

I would like even the traffic from eth0 to be send to eth1's network. I cannot delete the direct connected networks from the routing table so all the traffic from x.x.x.0 network is send to eth0. • Remote desktop solution for controlling a remote OS X machine in Linux

  The "server" (the host I'm trying to connect to) is Snow Leopard. The "client" is Ubuntu 10.04. I want something like a remote desktop server running on OS X that I can connect to and control from the Linux machine. Something cheap or free would be best. Something that always runs on the OS X machine so that I never have to attach a monitor or a keyboard. I don't want to use VNC, because, well, VNC sucks over this network. Any ideas?

  How do I install Navicat on Ubuntu Desktop 12.04? I have just configured a new Ubuntu 12.04. Because I'm not so familiar with the command line, I prefer to use Ubuntu Desktop so that I can have a GUI. Now I need to install a front-end to connect with MySQL. I prefer to use Navicat in a MAC environment, so I was hoping to install Navicat on the Ubuntu machine. I downloaded a Linux copy of Navicat for MySQL from here: http://www.navicat.com/download/navicat-for-mysql The problem I am having is that I don't know how to install the program after it has been downloaded. There is a navicat.exe file in the navicat folder, but that seems to be for a DOS/Windows environment. I just can't figure out how to install Navicat onto Ubuntu Desktop 12.04. Anyone have any ideas?
