  • unable to access shared drives n win7

    OK, this is doing my head in. Not your usual Win7 sharing problem. Just built a win 7 comp to go onto my home lan and be accessed by all on the network, mostly running XP SP3. Installed it as a single HD+DVD system, got it happy, then added my storage drives, set them up in the right order and letters, rebooted, and shared them. Couldn't access the computer at all from any XP machine. Set the pasword thingy in win7 to NO, and now I can "see" all four shared drives from any machine, but can access only two of them. Please tell me whats going on as I've done nothing different from one drive to the other, just installed and set up drive letters as normal, then shared the damn things. The odd thing about it? the two 1.5T drives that have a lot of data on board are accessable, the two nearly empty 500G ones are not. ANY ideas? Cheers, Colin

  • Xen private networking between multiple hosts

    I have two physical hosts running Xen 3.2, sharing storage via iSCSI. On these two hosts are a number of domUs and I'd like to network them in multiple private networks so they can only contact other domUs on their private network. My understanding of the xen documentation suggests it's possible to do this within one dom0 (ie create virtual networks between domUs), but I've found nothing explaining how this can be implemented across multiple dom0s on different hosts. The only thing that jumps to mind is manually creating iptable rules to route data to the other host, but this seems to lack elegance and could quickly grow cumbersome. Any suggestions? All advice is much appreciated!

  • Oracle RAC interconnect in a Dell M1000e Blade Enclosure

    We are looking at a Dell M1000e enclosure and appropriate Blades with 4 NICs each. We are planning on running Linux/Oracle 11g RAC on two blades, storage will be handled on an iSCSI SAN for which two NICs (via passthrough) will be connected leaving us with two NICs (via blade centre switches). We would like to have an interconnect (obviously) , an external IP and an internal IP. Would best practice be to: bond the remaining two interfaces and VLAN as appropriate to provide three virtual interfaces? run the interconnect on one interface and VLAN the external/internal interfaces? purchase a blade with more NICs as the above is a terrible idea? Another option? Please feel free to point out the blindingly obvious or to relevant documentation on support.oracle. I am specifically interested in supported configurations and best practices.     We're in the process of creating a shared webhosting infrastructure for our university. Departments within the university can host their sites on this infrastructure. We're thinking of setting up multiple, load balanced web servers attached to shared storage (for web content and Apache config files). There will also be database servers behind these web servers. Does anyone have any other suggestions about this? Any recommendations for an alternative setup? Would having cPanel/WHM/Plesk be a good idea to automate account creation/maintenance?

  • How to set up Dell OMSA tools on Debian 6 (Squeeze) (PE2950)

    I assume I have set up them up incorrectly or am missing a library or dependency. When I log into the OMSA web interface I can't see anything Also, omreport tells me nothing; root@box:~# omreport storage controller No controllers found I assume these two will use the same source of information so what ever is wrong will fix them both. I set up OMSA as per these instructions. Also I have compiled MegaCLI (as this is a PowerEdge 2950 with a Perc 6/i controller) and I have used that to update the RAID firmware, so that works, but the Dell tools aren't.     I'm starting to use CrashPlan to backup my Win 7 PC. I've got it writing to my external HD (for quick local restores) and to CrashPlan Central (for offsite storage). I'd like to backup my entire C:\ drive (the only partition) in a way that: Preserves all of my installed software and configuration, but Avoids backing up log files and other ephemeral / temporary files that are regenerated during normal operation of the OS. Which files and/or directories should I be excluding from backups? I'd like to make this a community wiki, so that we could all contribute towards a definitive list.     I am looking for a best hosting service for my website. My website is a PHP MySQl driven site which hase got site scrapping for more than 10 websites and near about 8-10 API pursing and some about 150 mb dat file reading(from local hard drive), and also one rss pursing,Live graph from other sites, geo map from Google,Map api from Google and so on. one widget which real-time result for any one who chose the same. so my question is which is best option for me. actually I am considering softlayer cloud as they are pretty cheap and more facilities than rackspace. another option is a dedicated server which has 2 single core processor, 4GB ram and 250GB sata II. with 100 mbps uplink. so please tell me which will be the best option?? I heard that dedicated server has lots of limitations than cloud. but for cloud they uses SAN for storage so I am afraid the reading proces for database may be bit slower...and their basic plan ram is only 1 GB.

  • Which protocol do clients use when communicating with servers in a SAN

    I'm trying to wrap my head around how a SAN works and how it is implemented. If I understand this well, clients wanting to access the storage devices in a SAN need to communicate with the servers via the LAN. When the SAN is implemented with Fibre Channel, these servers are Fibre Channel compliant devices, and internally in the SAN they work with the Fibre Channel Protocol. Both data and communications are supported by Fibre Channel. But which application-layer protocol do the clients use in the LAN to communicate with the servers? Is the data simply transferred via ethernet as well? This is some part I am stuck on. I went trough a lot of sources but most sources don't really mention protocols and if they do, they only mention FCP.

    I am researching external HDD's capable or RAID 1 to store a large amount of video content during overseas filming. After filming, the content will be brought back to the office and offloaded onto our storage server. After doing some research, I've found that I can buy an external drive with a built in RAID controller, or I can buy an external drive, with 2 HDD's, that I can configure in a RAID 1 array using the OS. RAID 1 is what we're looking for. I've done some reading on software RAID vs. hardware RAID, but the resources I've found don't discuss performance as it relates to video content or what happens to a software RAID when the computer dies. Question 1: Will the hardware RAID be more performant when dealing with large video files? Question 2: If the mac dies, does my RAID die with it (will my data be accessible on another mac)?

    I'm planning to setup my home network from scratch and want to ask professional opinions or tips. My home is connected to Internet with a cable connection (100 Mb/s). The devices I would like to connect are VoIP phone (RJ-45), TV (WiFi/LAN), 3 laptops (WiFi), 2 smartphones (WiFi), an iPad (WiFi), a Kindle (WiFi), a network printer and, probably, a home media storage (WiFi/LAN). As you can see, the most load will be on WiFi connections (probably, even if TV supports WiFi it's better to connect it by LAN?). So, I need help to choose the best router (or combination of routers) to support stable connections for all these devices and minimize the total number of routers/adapters. I like how Cisco/Linksys devices were working for me in the past, so preferably (but not obligatorily) I want to setup network with their solutions. Any thoughts?

    I have an Nvidia hardware RAID 1 array and need to reformat. But I don't have any spare storage media, so I need to get along with the 2 disks in the array. I figured I'd do as follows: Delete the array, so I have 2 separate but identical disks, A and B, with my files Put disk B aside Reformat disk A, build RAID 1 array with it, install Windows XP Put disk B back in Boot to Windows on disk A, copy my files from disk B to disk A Add disk B to the RAID 1 array, rebuild array And now I'd have a new RAID 1 array, fresh install and all my files intact (the ones I copied). Here are the parts I'm unsure about: Can I build a RAID 1 array using just one disk, then add the other one later? Can Windows on disk A see disk B and allow me to copy my files over?

    Question: Is getting a mini-PCIe worth investing in? Info: I have a an Acer Aspire 1 n270. It has this mini PCIe slot that is just sitting there empty. I would like to change this, and I would like to speed up my boot time. So I've been considering getting a mini-PCIe SSD. They are about the same price as faster same size drives of the 2.5" variation. The advantage of the mini-PCIe card is that I can have my HDD still. So I have good boot time, but still have the storage of my HDD. What I want to know is: will this allow me to spin down the HDD more often allowing me to save power? Will the OS (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) see them as separate drives? Is there anything that the mini-PCIe slot could be better used for? Thanks. ~n
