  Der Zugriff auf Datenbanken über das Netzwerk stellt aus Security Sicht einen ausgesprochen kritischen Vorgang dar, der unbedingt vor Missbrauch geschützt werden muss. Deshalb ist es auch nicht weiter verwunderlich, dass im Security Ecosystem etliche Produkte angeboten werden, die diesen Zugriff sichern helfen: Das beginnt bei Firewalls mit SQL Net Proxy, geht über Produkte wie die Oracle Database Firewall, die einen Schutz vor SQL Injection Angriffen über das Netzwerk leisten, und endet etwa bei den Angeboten zur Netzwerkverschlüsselung, wie sie im Oracle Datenbankumfeld vor allem die Advanced Security Option anbietet. Aber vor jedem Einsatz schwieriger oder kostspieliger Mittel zur Steigerung der Sicherheit einer Datenbank steht der Einsatz solcher Mittel, die ohne zusätzliche Kosten oder relativ einfach zu implementieren sind. Dazu gehören das bereits in einem Community Artikel andiskutierte  Härten der Datenbank oder das in einem weiteren Artikel angesprochene Umsetzen des  Prinzips des least privilege. • 9 Gigapixel Photo Captures 84 Million Stars

  The European Southern Observatory has released an absolutely enormous picture of the center of the Milky Way captured by their VISTA telescope–the image is 9 gigapixels and captures over 84 million stars. From the press release: The large mirror, wide field of view and very sensitive infrared detectors of ESO’s 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) make it by far the best tool for this job. The team of astronomers is using data from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea programme (VVV), one of six public surveys carried out with VISTA. The data have been used to create a monumental 108 200 by 81 500 pixel colour image containing nearly nine billion pixels. This is one of the biggest astronomical images ever produced. The team has now used these data to compile the largest catalogue of the central concentration of stars in the Milky Way ever created. • Red Gate join the SSIS custom component club

  I recently noticed that Red Gate have launched themselves into the SSIS component market by releasing a new Data Cleanser component, albeit in beta for now. It seems to be quite a simple component, bringing together several features that you can find elsewhere, but with a suitable level  polish that you’d expect from them. String operations include find and replace with regular expressions, case formatting and trim, all of which are available today in one form or another, but will the RedGate factor appeal to people? Benefits include ease of use, all operations in one place, versus installing a custom component which many organisations do not like. I’m also interested to see where they take this and SSIS products in general, as it almost seems too simple for RedGate, a company I normally associate with more advanced problem solving. Perhaps they are just dipping a toe in the water with a simple component for now?

• Turn Your Browser Pane into a Game of Katamari Damacy

  If you’re a fan of Katamari Damacy, a quirky and fun Japanese puzzle game made popular on the PlayStation, you’ll love this Javas script hack that turns your browser pane and its contents into a giant HTML-collecting game of Katamari Damacy. Katamari Damacy, for the unfamiliar, is a addictive game based on the premise that a galactic prince is on a mission to rebuild stars, constellations, and moons accidentally destroyed by his father. You roll around and collect objects (making yourself an increasingly larger ball in the process). This script hack puts a ball on your web browser pane (works best in Chrome) that you can roll around collecting elements from the web page. At first you can only grab links but as you grow you can grab increasingly large objects like photo elements off the page. It doesn’t have the sophisticated graphics of the Playstation version, of course, nor the detailed back story, but it’s a clever little hack that is sure to delight fans of Katamari Damacy. • DIY Halloween Decoration Uses Simple Silohuettes

  While many of the Halloween decorating tricks we’ve shared over the years involve lots of wire, LEDs, and electronic guts, this one is thoroughly analog (and easy to put together). A simple set of silhouettes can cheaply and quickly transform the front of your house. Courtesy of Matt over at GeekDad, the transformation is easy to pull off. He explains: It’s really just about as simple as you could hope for. The materials needed are: black posterboard or black-painted cardboard; colored cellophane or tissue paper; and tape. The only tools needed are: measuring tape; some sort of drawing implement — chalk works really well; and scissors and/or X-Acto knife. And while you need some drawing talent, the scale is big enough and the need for precision little enough that you don’t need that much. • Mercury and Sound Waves [Video]

  In this video a tone generator is used to shoot specific frequencies through a large drop of mercury which results in a wide array of unique shapes and patterns created by standing waves–but really, you need to see it to appreciate it. The experiment, put together by Nick Moore, combines a glass dish, a drop of mercury, and a old tone generator to demonstrate standing waves in 3D. • Movie Poster Colors Over Time

  This spectrograph-like image records tens of thousands of movie posters over the course of a century, showing a steady shift towards posters that emphasize black, purple, and blue color tones. It’s a neat look at how the color tastes of an entire industry shift over time. Vijay Pandurangan had a disagreement with a friend about whether or not movie posters were becoming darker/bluer over time. Rather than simply agree to disagree, he whipped up a piece of code that downloaded and analyzed thousands of movie posters proving that, in fact, there was a slow and steady shift towards darker and bluer posters.     Ich darf ja keine Namen nennen, aber der Gewinner unserer Umfrage auf der DOAG Konferenz 2012 steht fest und hat sich mit seiner Teilnahme selbst ein erstklassiges Nikolaus-Geschenk gemacht - und zwar ein niegelnagelneues iPad!!! Zugegeben - genau so wie auf dem Bild sieht das iPad des glücklichen Gewinners nicht aus, denn dieser Custom Design Wunsch von mir hätte wahrscheinlich ebenso viel gekostet wie eine ausgewachsene Exadata, aber das wird die Freude nicht trüben. Und freuen können sich auch noch die Gewinner auf den Plätzen 2 bis 5 - nämlich über eine Laptop-Tasche, hochwertigen Stift und Notizmappe aus Leder. Ich freue mich mit den Gewinnern und nicht zuletzt über die rege Teilnahme und vor allem die Ergebnisse der Umfrage.
