• File Sync Solution for Batch Processing (ETL)

  I'm looking for a slightly different kind of sync utility - not one designed to keep two directories identical, but rather one intended to keep files flowing from one host to another. The context is a data warehouse that currently has a custom-developed solution that moves 10,000 files a day, some of which are 1+ gbytes gzipped files, between linux servers via ssh. Files are produced by the extract process, then moved to the transform server where a transform daemon is waiting to pick them up. The same process happens between transform & load. Once the files are moved they are typically archived on the source for a week, and the downstream process likewise moves them to temp then archive as it consumes them. So, my requirements & desires: It is never used to refresh updated files - only used to deliver new files. Because it's delivering files to downstream processes - it needs to rename the file once done so that a partial file doesn't get picked up. In order to simplify recovery, it should keep a copy of the source files - but rename them or move them to another directory. If the transfer fails (network down, file system full, permissions, file locked, etc), then it should retry periodically - and never fail in a non-recoverable way, or a way that sends the file twice or never sends the file. Should be able to copy files to 2+ destinations. Should have a consolidated log so that it's easy to find problems Should have an optional checksum feature Any recommendations? Can Unison do this well?

• Setup Firefox to save .pages as .zip automatically

  What do I want to do? I would like Firefox to save files with the .pages extension as .zip files automatically. Scenario You are browsing through your emails and you notice your friend just sent you an email with a file attached (a .pages in this example). Unfortunately, you have a laptop that runs Windows. Your friend continues to send tons of emails with .pages files attached and you are tired of manually saving the files as a .zip file. Ultimately, you would like Firefox to be set up so that the download/file manager recognizes the .pages extension and automatically converts it to a .zip file. What have I done? I have saved files manually by selecting save as "All Files" and setting the extension to .zip. I've gone through Firefox and their documentation and have not found anything on how to complete this task. Why am I doing this? To save time (only a few seconds, not the main reason). I would like to setup a simple solution that "converts" a file automatically without having to recall steps on how to achieve the task manually (for clients who aren't exactly tech savvy). So that clients with Windows can access the files. IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not trying to save the web page, rather an Apple document equivalent to Microsoft Word. UPDATE: The really easy method would be to save one file, right click it, choose properties and open all .pages files up with WinRAR (or any other program that extracts files from a compressed folder). For the sake of learning, I am going to "neglect" this method and continue to do some research on Firefox add-ons. I would still like to have Firefox or the download manager to do the bulk of the work for converting the file.

• Synchronize two directories on linux pc

  I need a distributed filesystem (or a synchronization tool) that is capable of keeping a directory synchronized across 4 pc. My requirements are: offline access (data must be available offline on each pc) preserve execution rights: some files are marked executable on a linux partition. This flag should be replicated. efficient sync strategy: some of my files are 20GB, they are changed quite often, but in very little parts (Virtualbox images). Delta transmissions are welcome. efficient handling of space: no history for files, files shouldn't be copied to temp directories "just in case you break it". it must propagate deletions of files modification can happen in any of the 4 pcs, they should be propagated when other pc are connected. Other specs of my solution are: Sync is over a lan, the total amount of data to be synced is around 180GB, in some ten thousand files. Changes are small, but can happen in big files. At the moment i'm interested in a linux only solution. conflicts either don't happen or are solved with "last one wins" I haven't found any good solution. I've been trying: unison: it is the only one working at the moment, but during the hashing phase it hangs my pc for some minute, disk light steady on. Sparkleshare doesn't handle large files nicely. It keeps an history of all your changes that grows up indefinitely. They promise it will be fixed in next releases, but at the moment it still doesn't fit my needs. owncloud (keeps history of each file i change) coda ? (help! i couldn't set it up correctly!) git-annex assistant transforms all your files in symlinks and mark the original file as read only ("just in case you make a mistake while you modify it"!). Before you edit a file you have to issue a special command "git-annex unlock", that creates a local copy of the file, and you have to remember to lock it again if you want it synchronized. What to try next?

• Trobleshooting extremely slow opening times in Win7 for documents on Win2k8 server

  Hello. It's hard even to describe my problem. It seems there's only problem with extreme slow openings (up to 10 minutes) on Windows 7 (on XP things works fine) for files that are stored on Windows Server 2008. And now what I discovered up till now. If I open (some files, not all, not allways) .doc and .xls files with doubleclicking it takes up to 10 minutes to finaly open the file. In that time, file seems to be locked for all other users. If I cancel opening, file remains locked for some time. Owner on that files is the one who last wrote changes in them. If I change the owner to larger group, which I am member of file gets opened super fast. When opened file can be saved normaly and fast. That file reopens fast. One other user reports that there is only problem when opening the files for the first time in a day. When he openes first file he has no problems with other files at all (or so he says). He also states that when accessing files from home via VPN he has no such problems with files. And now: anybody has a clue where to start looking? I suppose that is misconfiguration problem. But where? File system? Permissions? DFS? VMWare network config? My setup is as follows: Physical server: HP Prolian ML350 G6 Virtual host: VMWare ESXi 4 Guest: Windows Server 2008 Standard Files are accessed via DFS shares. Please help me. Thanks. Mazupan

• Connect trough remote computer connection

  First, sorry for my english and my poor knowlodge of this subject. I have a dedicated server placed in Germany (windows 2008 R2) and I live in spain. I would like to access internet from my home computer (Windows 7 Pro x64), trough my server in Germany, so I can use a German IP, what I need some times. I have complete acces in to both computers, but I just don't know where to start. (My knwoledge is limited to software development :/ ) I'd like to know where to start, if I need to create a VPN and so.. Thanks in advance!   I am looking for a solution for a project i am working on. We are developing a websystem where people can upload their files and other people can download it. (similar to rapidshare.com model) Problem is, some files can be demanded much more than other files. The scenerio is like: I have uploaded my birthday video and shared it with all of my friend, I have uploaded it to myproject.com and it was stored in one of the cluster which has 100mbit connection. Problem is, once all of my friends want to download the file, they cant download it since the bottleneck here is 100mbit which is 15MB per second, but i got 1000 friends and they can only download 15KB per second. I am not taking into account that the hdd is serving same files. My network infrastrucre is as follows: 1 gbit server(client) and connected to 4 Nodes of storage servers that have 100mbit connection. 1gbit server can handle the 1000 users traffic if one of storage node can stream more than 15MB per second to my 1gbit (client) server and visitor will stream directly from client server instead of storage nodes. I can do it by replicating the file into 2 nodes. But i dont want to replicate all files uploadded to my network since it is costing much more. So i need a cloud based system, which will push the files into replicated nodes automatically when demanded to those files are high, and when the demand is low, they will delete from other nodes and it will stay in only 1 node. I have looked to gluster and asked in their irc channel that, gluster cant do such a thing. It is only able to replicate all the files or none of the files. But i need it the cluster software to do it automatically. Any solutions ? (instead of recommending me amazon s3) S

Try typing there and notice that the characters you're typing are coming out in their reverse orders (right-to-left, instead of left-to-right). In filenames, the RLO character can be specifically positioned in the filename to spoof or masquerade as having a filename or file extension that is different than what it actually has. (Will still be hidden even if 'Hide extensions for known filetypes' is unchecked.) • File Acces\Rename Issue

  Guys, i am having serious problem with media files (only video files). When i try to rename or delete a Files or the Folders that contained media files, i get an error. "Access Denied .... Some other program might be using this file..... bla bla bla" Previously for this knida problem i had a freeware "Unlocker" that used to work. What "Unlocker" used to do was simply kill the process that is using the file. But in my case, now that is, the process using the files is "Explorer.exe" W.T.F... A strange behavior, when i copy paste the same file. The copied file, I can rename it, i can delete it, i can shit on it if i want to.... but what is wrong with the original file. Check the following list. It will give you a better idea of my situation. I am using Win XP SP 2 I have got Div Player installed (latest) The media files are from both, my hard drive, created by many of my previous window installations. And new downloaded files. So Files ownership or Privacy is not an issue. I may not be able to rename\delete those files one moment, the next moment, in the next try, i might succeed. The problem is a major F. i can't figure it out. Please F1! its getting on my nerves.

  We need to share large files with clients, e.g. clients upload a large file, we modify it and later make it available for download. Up until now we've used FTP but this has a number of drawbacks. A lot of management of files and setting up accounts etc. We are therefore considering online alternatives. Requirements: Cheap, 8-) Easy to use, ideally just requiring a web browser, but also possible for power users to connect e.g. via FTPS/SFTP No registration requried for users to upload/download files. We ourselves of course need to be able to login an view uploaded files and upload new files. No per user fee High bandwidth. As files may be GBs in size both upload and download speed cannot be too slow Secure. Encryption during upload/download. No way for users to access uploaded files. Once a user has uploaded a file they (or anyone else besides us) should be able to access the file. To download files users get a link with a password. Ideally the link expires after a set time. No software installation We do NOT need any sync features, backup, versioning etc. Just a quick, easy, secure way for us to share files with our clients. Services like JustCloud, DriveHQ etc seems bloated and "too much" for what we need. What other alternatives exist? Thanks!

• Loading jQuery Consistently in a .NET Web App

  One thing that frequently comes up in discussions when using jQuery is how to best load the jQuery library (as well as other commonly used and updated libraries) in a Web application. Specifically the issue is the one of versioning and making sure that you can easily update and switch versions of script files with application wide settings in one place and having your script usage reflect those settings in the entire application on all pages that use the script. Although I use jQuery as an example here, the same concepts can be applied to any script library - for example in my Web libraries I use the same approach for jQuery.ui and my own internal jQuery support library. The concepts used here can be applied both in WebForms and MVC. Loading jQuery Properly From CDN Before we look at a generic way to load jQuery via some server logic, let me first point out my preferred way to embed jQuery into the page. I use the Google CDN to load jQuery and then use a fallback URL to handle the offline or no Internet connection scenario. Why use a CDN? CDN links tend to be loaded more quickly since they are very likely to be cached in user's browsers already as jQuery CDN is used by many, many sites on the Web. Using a CDN also removes load from your Web server and puts the load bearing on the CDN provider - in this case Google - rather than on your Web site. On the downside, CDN links gives the provider (Google, Microsoft) yet another way to track users through their Web usage. Here's how I use jQuery CDN plus a fallback link on my WebLog for example: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6.4/jquery.min.js"></script> <script> if (typeof (jQuery) == 'undefined') document.write(unescape("%3Cscript " + "src='/Weblog/wwSC.axd?r=Westwind.Web.Controls.Resources.jquery.js' %3E%3C/script%3E")); </script> <title>Rick Strahl's Web Log</title> ... </head>   You can see that the CDN is referenced first, followed by a small script block that checks to see whether jQuery was loaded (jQuery object exists). If it didn't load another script reference is added to the document dynamically pointing to a backup URL. In this case my backup URL points at a WebResource in my Westwind.Web  assembly, but the URL can also be local script like src="/scripts/jquery.min.js". Important: Use the proper Protocol/Scheme for  for CDN Urls [updated based on comments] If you're using a CDN to load an external script resource you should always make sure that the script is loaded with the same protocol as the parent page to avoid mixed content warnings by the browser. You don't want to load a script link to an http:// resource when you're on an https:// page. The easiest way to use this is by using a protocol relative URL: <script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6.4/jquery.min.js"></script> which is an easy way to load resources from other domains. This URL syntax will automatically use the parent page's protocol (or more correctly scheme). As long as the remote domains support both http:// and https:// access this should work. BTW this also works in CSS (with some limitations) and links. BTW, I didn't know about this until it was pointed out in the comments. This is a very useful feature for many things - ah the benefits of my blog to myself :-) Version Numbers When you use a CDN you notice that you have to reference a specific version of jQuery. When using local files you may not have to do this as you can rename your private copy of jQuery.js, but for CDN the references are always versioned. The version number is of course very important to ensure you getting the version you have tested with, but it's also important to the provider because it ensures that cached content is always correct. If an existing file was updated the updates might take a very long time to get past the locally cached content and won't refresh properly. The version number ensures you get the right version and not some cached content that has been changed but not updated in your cache. On the other hand version numbers also mean that once you decide to use a new version of the script you now have to change all your script references in your pages. Depending on whether you use some sort of master/layout page or not this may or may not be easy in your application. Even if you do use master/layout pages, chances are that you probably have a few of them and at the very least all of those have to be updated for the scripts. If you use individual pages for all content this issue then spreads to all of your pages. Search and Replace in Files will do the trick, but it's still something that's easy to forget and worry about. Personaly I think it makes sense to have a single place where you can specify common script libraries that you want to load and more importantly which versions thereof and where they are loaded from. Loading Scripts via Server Code Script loading has always been important to me and as long as I can remember I've always built some custom script loading routines into my Web frameworks. WebForms makes this fairly easy because it has a reasonably useful script manager (ClientScriptManager and the ScriptManager) which allow injecting script into the page easily from anywhere in the Page cycle. What's nice about these components is that they allow scripts to be injected by controls so components can wrap up complex script/resource dependencies more easily without having to require long lists of CSS/Scripts/Image includes. In MVC or pure script driven applications like Razor WebPages  the process is more raw, requiring you to embed script references in the right place. But its also more immediate - it lets you know exactly which versions of scripts to use because you have to manually embed them. In WebForms with different controls loading resources this often can get confusing because it's quite possible to load multiple versions of the same script library into a page, the results of which are less than optimal… In this post I look a simple routine that embeds jQuery into the page based on a few application wide configuration settings. It returns only a string of the script tags that can be manually embedded into a Page template. It's a small function that merely a string of the script tags shown at the begging of this post along with some options on how that string is comprised. You'll be able to specify in one place which version loads and then all places where the help function is used will automatically reflect this selection. Options allow specification of the jQuery CDN Url, the fallback Url and where jQuery should be loaded from (script folder, Resource or CDN in my case). While this is specific to jQuery you can apply this to other resources as well. For example I use a similar approach with jQuery.ui as well using practically the same semantics. Providing Resources in ControlResources In my Westwind.Web Web utility library I have a class called ControlResources which is responsible for holding resource Urls, resource IDs and string contants that reference those resource IDs. The library also provides a few helper methods for loading common scriptscripts into a Web page. There are specific versions for WebForms which use the ClientScriptManager/ScriptManager and script link methods that can be used in any .NET technology that can embed an expression into the output template (or code for that matter). The ControlResources class contains mostly static content - references to resources mostly. Since they're static they are application wide settings and respected across the entire Web application running. Razor by default escapes string results and this ensures that the HTML content is properly expanded as raw HTML text. You can see there's only a little bit of logic in this code that deals with potentially different load modes. I can load scripts from a Url, WebResources or - my preferred way - from CDN. Based on the static settings the scripts to embed are composed to be returned as simple string <script> tag(s). I find this extremely useful especially when I'm not connected to the internet so that I can quickly swap in a local jQuery resource instead of loading from CDN. While CDN loading with the fallback works it can be a bit slow as the CDN is probed first before the fallback kicks in. Switching quickly in one place makes this trivial. It also makes it very easy once a new version of jQuery rolls around to move up to the new version and ensure that all pages are using the new version immediately. I'm not trying to make this out as 'the' definite way to load your resources, but rather provide it here as a pointer so you can maybe apply your own logic to determine where scripts come from and how they load. You could even automate this some more by using configuration settings or reading the locations/preferences out of some sort of data/metadata store that can be dynamically updated instead via recompilation. FWIW, I use a very similar approach for loading jQuery UI and my own ww.jquery library - the same concept can be applied to any kind of script you might be loading from different locations. Hopefully some of you find this a useful addition to your toolset. • Weblogic Bea 10.0 M1 and WorkManager

  Hi there! I have to execute long running threads in a WebLogic Bea 10.0 M1 server environment. I tried to use WorkManagers for this. Using an own WorkManager allows me to specify my own thread timeout (MaxThreadStuckTime) instead of adjusting the timeout for the whole business application. The resource-ref must be mapped to a JNDI name using the resource-description element of the weblogic-ejb-jar.xml descriptor. I try to figure out how to access / use WorkMangers for days now, and still get this or that as an exception. Very frustrating! Thanks in advance!

• Wireless card power management

  I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this? • Developing custom MBeans to manage J2EE Applications (Part III)

  This is the third and final part in a series of blogs, that demonstrate how to add management capability to your own application using JMX MBeans. In Part I we saw: How to implement a custom MBean to manage configuration associated with an application. How to package the resulting code and configuration as part of the application's ear file. How to register MBeans upon application startup, and unregistered them upon application stop (or undeployment). How to use generic JMX clients such as JConsole to browse and edit our application's MBean. In Part II we saw: How to add localized descriptions to our MBean, MBean attributes, MBean operations and MBean operation parameters. How to specify meaningful name to our MBean operation parameters. We also touched on future enhancements that will simplify how we can implement localized MBeans. In this third and last part, we will re-write our MBean to simplify how we added localized descriptions. To do so we will take advantage of the functionality we already described in part II and that is now part of WebLogic 10.3.3.0. We will show how to take advantage of WebLogic's localization support to localize our MBeans based on the client's Locale independently of the server's Locale. Each client will see MBean descriptions localized based on his/her own Locale. We will show how to achieve this using JConsole, and also using a sample programmatic JMX Java client. The complete code sample and associated build files for part III are available as a zip file. The code has been tested against WebLogic Server 10.3.3.0 and JDK6. To build and deploy our sample application, please follow the instruction provided in Part I, as they also apply to part III's code and associated zip file. Providing custom descriptions take II In part II we localized our MBean descriptions by extending the StandardMBean class and overriding its many getDescription methods. • How can I specify resources in an MVVM view model?

  Suppose I want to show list of objects where each object should have a name and a suitable image (for example MenuItems with Icons, or buttons with text and image). All examples and programs exposed the image in the viewmodel as a path to a PNG file and then bound the Source of an Image to that. But what if I want to use vector images (for example as a DrawingImage in a local ResourceDictionary)? Exposing the DrawingImage from the view model seems bad because I would have to store a reference to the application/window/user control/... (and it is advised to not expose such XAML objects from view models). So a better approach would be to use a string identifier in the view model and then somehow select the appropriate resource. If that identifier is the resource key this snippet looks tempting but does not work: <Image Source="{StaticResource {Binding Icon}}"/> I found two workarounds for that though they did not work for me. The first one was using a normal binding to the icon with a converter that looked up the resource in Application.Current. This does not work if the resource is stored somewhere else I think (and the situation where I initially bumped into this problem had no Application running yet since it was a Window choosing the Application to launch!). The second workaround was using a markup extension derived from StaticResourceExtension that fetched its ResourceKey from the passed binding: <Image Source="{local:BindableStaticResource {Binding Icon}"/> This one looks really neat because it could use local resources, also be used for other things. But when using it I always got an exception ("Resource named {FooIcon} could not be found.", showing the correct XAML file and position of the extension). Even an empty resource extension derived from StaticResourceExtension that just passed the resource key to the base constructor did not work and I cannot explain why. Just using StaticResourceExtension worked just fine. Any ideas how I could fix the second approach, or even better solutions? Edit I noticed that it does work when used directly like this: <Window> <Window.Resources> <DrawingImage x:Key="SomeIcon"/> </Window.Resources> <Image Source="{BindableStaticResource {Binding Icon}}"/> </Window> but fails for example in a DataTemplate. Though a normal StaticResourceExtension works on both occasions so I am puzzled what is going wrong.

• Cisco Unifed Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

• Visual Studio 2008 SignTool.exe not found

  I can't publish in 2008, I was previously using 2005 and it published just fine. Error 2 An error occurred while signing: SignTool.exe not found. I know there are tons of hits for a search on signtool.exe on google. The ones I've found involve copying the file to X,Y,Z locations and ensuring signtool matches up with your VS command prompt path. When I run my start- program files - visual studio 2008 - Visual Studio Tools - Visual Studio Command prompt. and type signtool.exe it finds the file just fine. I have Visual Studio 2005 professional edition, Visual studio 2008 profession edition, Visual studio 2005 SDK February 2007, just installed Visial Studio 2008 SDK1.1 to see if that would fix it, no luck. I have copied signtool.exe to lots of places that were suggested on the google searches, it is now located at all of the following: C:\Program Files\Visual Studio 2005 SDK\2007.02 C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\Tools C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VB\Bin C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5 C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\Tools\Bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\SDK\v3.5\Bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VB\Bin\1033 C:\Program Files\Visual Studio 2005 SDK\2007.02\VisualStudioIntegration\Tools\Bin I'm on windows XP 2009-06-12 update I can only publish if I copy signtool.exe to the project folder I'm publishing now.

• Cisco Unified Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

• Zend Studio Debugger returns Application Error

  When I run debug for my public/index.php I got an application error as output. I've seen that it occurs at this line: foreach($feed->findFeedEntries($entriesLimit) as $entry) If I put a breakpoint before this, all works as expected, I mean, the error is after the line above. If I remove findFeedEntries() method, I can perform debugging without erros. • On REST: WADL or not IDL, is the following approach right ?

  This question is a bit long, please bear with me. In REST, i think we should not need WADL or any IDL. But rather something that would implicitly cover its concept. The way I think about it is when we (humans) surf the Web, when we go to a web site for the first time, we don't know what services it provides. You discover those on the html home page (or a sitemap page in a help section) or maybe just the main menu on the home page. If you make an analogy, the homepage or site map to us humans is what WSDL is to WS-* or what WADL could be to a REST service. Only that its just like any other html content. I think that in REST the following is a good way to do things, respecting the HATEOS paradigm. Have a top level (or default) resource that lists links to your other resources. For a library example, say RestLibrary.com/ it could be something like: <root xmlns:lib="http://librarystandards.com/libraryml"> <resource class="lib:book"> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="add" href="mylib.com/book" method="POST" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="update" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" method="PUT" /> </resource> <resource class="lib:bookList"> <link template="mylib.com/book?keywords={keywords}" type="application/vnd.openlibrary+xml" rel="search" /> </resource> </root> Note that it is assumed that the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is a defined standard or (may be just proprietary vocabulary) named libraryml. Also, the client should be able to understand this "homepage" resource (elements root, resource and link). This is the part that could be used instead of WADL : an Abstract vocabulary that should be understandable by any client. You could use an existing standard like Atom for example. But the main idea is to have an abstract vocabulary understandable by any client. Why not WADL then ? well wadl is only for service discovery. The idea here is to have an light abstract vocabulary that would serve as a base for hypermedia. A "root" vocabulary. Like in owl we have owl:thing...etc Now if the client knows the "libraryml" standard it can follow the links to the things it understands (after parsing the media type properties and xmlns). If not, it just won't. When i can't understand how to deal with something in REST architecture i tend to see how we Humans do it in the Web. In the Web, we have the Generic language that is HTML that enables site builders to deliver any specific content, regardless of its meaning to the client (the user), Browsers understand HTML but not the "meaning" of its content. It is the user that understands the (domain specific) content. If i go to say QuantumPhysics.org, my browser can render the home page (it is just html after all) and i can read the home page. If i understand quantum then fine i can continue browsing. If i don't i just get out (unless i want to learn the hardway :) ) In the RetsLibrary.com example the client app is just like me+my browser on QuantumPhysics.org. the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is quantum physics (knowledge). http is http in both examples. Now HTML of QuantumPhysics.org is in RestLibrary.com is XML + that tiny little abstract vocabulary (root resource and link, that you could replace with something like Atom). So does this approach have any value ? don't we need a root tiny hyper-vocabulary so we can succeed with hypermedia and the "initial URI" concept ? edit Yeah why not RDF as the root vocabulary !

• Remove file from git repository (history)

  (solved, see bottom of the question body) Looking for this for a long time now, what I have till now is: http://dound.com/2009/04/git-forever-remove-files-or-folders-from-history/ and http://progit.org/book/ch9-7.html Pretty much the same method, but both of them leave objects in pack files... Stuck. What I tried: git filter-branch --index-filter 'git rm --cached --ignore-unmatch file_name' rm -Rf .git/refs/original rm -Rf .git/logs/ git gc Still have files in the pack, and this is how I know it: git verify-pack -v .git/objects/pack/pack-3f8c0...bb.idx | sort -k 3 -n | tail -3 And this: git filter-branch --index-filter "git rm -rf --cached --ignore-unmatch file_name" HEAD rm -rf .git/refs/original/ && git reflog expire --all && git gc --aggressive --prune The same... Tried git clone trick, it removed some of the files (~3000 of them) but the largest files are still there... I have some large legacy files in the repository, ~200M, and I really don't want them there...   I am on MAC OS X 10.5.5. I installed Calibre, a tool for converting e-book files from one format to another. It has a GUI as well as command line tools. I am trying to run the command line tool "any2mobi" to convert HTML files to MOBI pocket format or Kindle AZW format, with a TOC. I get the error "-bash: any2mobi: command not found". Clearly, any2mobi is not in my path. Where is it? I tried searching but came up empty. I installed version 0.6.0b6 of Calibre.

  Our users have a toolbar on their Windows taskbar called "I Need Help". It holds links to our support system with specific fields prefilled. We've changed some of the structure our our support system and need to replace the links inside the folder. Some of the links have different names and some are being completely removed. Ideally we just want to clear the folder and replace it with a new set of files. What's the best way to do this through Group Policy Preferences in Windows Server 2008?
