• Hibernate @Transactional not starting transaction

  I have a web app using Hibernate, and I am attempting to persist some data, but it is failing to persist within a Transaction despite using the @Transactional annotation. My service class is as follows: @Service("profileService") public class ProfileService { private EntityManager entityManager; @Autowired private AccountService accountService; @Autowired private ProfileDAOImpl profileDao; @PersistenceContext public void setEntityManager(EntityManager em) { this.entityManager = em; } @Transactional public void addConnectionToAccount(SocialConnection sc) { entityManager.persist(sc); } } The addConnectionToAccount() method is being called from another Spring bean in a normal method, and the ProfileService class is currently being injected there: public class HibernateConnectionRepository implements ConnectionRepository { @Inject private ProfileService profileService; @Override @Transactional public void addConnection(SocialConnection sc) { try { profileService.addConnectionToAccount(accountId, sc); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } I tried putting the @Transactional annotation on the calling method in the vain hope that it might make a difference but nothing. Previously I have experienced problems like this its been because the object being persisted does not satisfy table restrictions (such as non-nullable columns as null) or because the method is being called from within the same class and the calling method is not Transactional, but neither of those are the case here.. • Does "delegate" mean a type or an object?

  Reading from MSDN: "A delegate is a type that references a method. Once a delegate is assigned a method, it behaves exactly like that method." Does then "delegate" mean a type or an object?! ...It cannot be both. It seems to me that the single word is used in two different meanings: a type containing a reference to a method of some specified signature, an object of that type, which can be actually called like a method. I would prefer a more precise vocabulary and use "delegate type" for the first case. I have been recently reading a lot about events and delegates and that ambiguity was making me confused many times. Some other uses of "delegate" word in MSDN in the first meaning: "Custom event delegates are needed only when an event generates event data" "A delegate declaration defines a class that is derived from the class System.Delegate" Some other uses of "delegate" word in MSDN in the second meaning: "specify a delegate that will be called upon the occurrence of some event" "Delegates are objects that refer to methods. They are sometimes described as type-safe function pointers" What do you think? Why did people from Microsoft introduced this ambiguity? Am I the only person to have conceptual problems with different notions being referenced with the same word.

• JSF - Updating Model Values in Controller Bean

  I have a Controller bean (SearchController) that has two managed bean as managed properties (SearchCriteria, SearchResults; both of which are session scoped). When the user hits the find button, the action method that is executed is in SearchController. The SearchCreteria managed bean has a method called search(). This method returns a new SearchResults object. In the controller bean, I am setting the searchResults managed property to be this new SearchResults object. The searchResults object contains what I expect during that request, but the object does not persist in the managed bean. I understand that I am changing what object that searchResults is referencing, but what I don't understand is why JSF isn't updating the model to use the new object. Any ideas what I'm missing or don't understand? I am using JSF 1.1 on WebSphere 6.1. If I put the search method in the SearchResults managed bean, it works.

  I am trying to call an asmx web service from an Android app. Just literally started some Android development today. I've been following various solutions I have found on the net and on here and it seems it is more difficult than anticipated. I have tried various solutions and using KSoap2 seems to be the easiest way to implement this, well it would be if I could get it working. And also make sure to close the EMF once it's used (?) • MooTools Problem in IE with Request

  I have this class method in a mootools class: getData : function(){ var r = new Request.JSON({ url : this.container.getAttribute('data-url'), method : 'post', onSuccess : function(j){ this.cards = j; this.prepareQuiz(); }.bind(this) }).send(); }, In any browser aside from IE this works fine, but in IE I get a this.cards is not defined in a method that occurs after the this.prepareQuiz method does it's stuff. I narrowed the problem to this section by adding an if ($defined(this.cards)) before the this.prepareQuiz call and if I just keep refreshing the page 1 out of every 5 or so times it will work. So the this.cards variable is not being set some of the time for some reason. Why would this happen?

  As part of a rewrite of an old Java application into C#, I'm writing an actual Software Design Specification. A problem I run into is when a method is too simple to bother with a Sequence Diagram (it doesn't interact with other objects). As an example, I have a simple POJO called Item, containing the following method: public String getCategoryKey() { StringBuffer value = new StringBuffer("s-"); value.append(this.getModelID()); value.append("-c"); return value; } The purpose and the algorithm for the method needs to be documented. However, a sequence diagram is overkill. How would others document it? (I take no credit/blame for the given method, it's very old code and the author "forgot" to put their name in the Javadoc).

  I've always used cURL for this sort of stuff, but this article got me thinking I could request another page easily using the Request object in Kohana 3. $url = 'http://www.example.com'; $update = Request::factory($url); $update->method = 'POST'; $update->post = array( 'key' => 'value' ); $update->execute(); echo $update->response; However I get the error Accessing static property Request::$method as non static From this I can assume it means that the method method is static, but that doesn't help me much. I also copied and pasted the example from that article and it threw the same error. Basically, I'm trying to POST to a new page on an external server, and do it the Kohana way. So, am I doing this correctly, or should I just use cURL (or file_get_contents() with context)?

Whenever I call the http-method I get org.hibernate.LazyInitializationException from my org.springframework.http.converter.json.MappingJacksonHttpMessageConverter which is bound in my application context. Is the @Transactional annotation valid for the MessageConverter as well?

  Hi everybody. I'm trying to make a tabbed menu for the asp.net website I'm working on. One of the pre-requisite is obviously to color the current tab differently, so the user can know on which tab is currently is. • GUID or int entity key with SQL Compact/EF4?

  This is a follow-up to an earlier question I posted on EF4 entity keys with SQL Compact. SQL Compact doesn't allow server-generated identity keys, so I am left with creating my own keys as objects are added to the ObjectContext. My first choice would be an integer key, and the previous answer linked to a blog post that shows an extension method that uses the Max operator with a selector expression to find the next available key: public static TResult NextId<TSource, TResult>(this ObjectSet<TSource> table, Expression<Func<TSource, TResult>> selector) where TSource : class { TResult lastId = table.Any() ? table.Max(selector) : default(TResult); if (lastId is int) { lastId = (TResult)(object)(((int)(object)lastId) + 1); } return lastId; } Here's my take on the extension method: It will work fine if the ObjectContext that I am working with has an unfiltered entity set. In that case, the ObjectContext will contain all rows from the data table, and I will get an accurate result. But if the entity set is the result of a query filter, the method will return the last entity key in the filtered entity set, which will not necessarily be the last key in the data table. So I think the extension method won't really work. At this point, the obvious solution seems to be to simply use a GUID as the entity key. That way, I only need to call Guid.NewGuid() method to set the ID property before I add a new entity to my ObjectContext. Here is my question: Is there a simple way of getting the last primary key in the data store from EF4 (without having to create a second ObjectContext for that purpose)? Any other reason not to take the easy way out and simply use a GUID? Thanks for your help.

• How to combine apache requests?

  To give you the situation in abstract: I have an ajax client that often needs to retrieve 3-10 static documents from the server. Those 3-10 documents are selected by the client out of about 100 documents in total. I have no way of knowing in advance which 3-10 documents the client will require. Additionally, those 100 documents are generated from database content, and so change over time. It seems messy to me to have to make 10 ajax requests for 10 separate documents. My first thought was to write a jsp that could use the include action. ie in pseudo code for (param in params){ jsp:include page="[param]" } But it turns out the tomcat doesn't just include the html resource, it recompiles it, generating a class file every time, which also seems wasteful. Does any one know of a neat solution for combining apache requests to static files to make one request, rather than several, but without the overhead of, for example, tomcat generating extra class files for each static file and regenerating them each time the static file changes? Thanks! Hopefully my question is clear - it's a bit long-winded.

  Write a static method in Java : public static void sortByFour (int[] arr) That receives as a paramater an array full of non-negative numbers (zero or positive) and sorts the array in the following way : In the beginning of the array all the numbers that devide by four without a remainder will appear. After them all the numbers in the array that devide by 4 with a remainder of 1 will appear. After them all the numbers in the array that devide by 4 with a remainder of 2 will appear. In the end of the array all the rest numbers (those who divide by 4 with the remainder 3) will appear. (The order of the numbers in each group doesn't matter) The method must be the most efficient it can. • How to get around LazyInitializationException in scheduled jobs?

  I am working on a J2EE server application which is deployed on Tomcat. I use Spring source as MVC framework and Hibernate as ORM provider. My object model has lot of Lazy relationships (dependent objects are fetched on request). The high level design is like Service level methods call a few DAO methods to perform database operation. The service method is called either from the Flex UI or as a scheduled job. When it is called from Flex UI, the service method works fine i.e. it fetches some objects using DAO methods and even Lazy loading works. This is possible by the use of OpenSessionInViewFilter configured with the UI servlet. But when the same service method is called as scheduled Job, it gives LazyInitializationException. I can not configure OpenSessionInViewFilter because there is no servlet or UI request associated with that. I tried configuring Transaction around the scheduled job method so that service method starts a transaction and all the DAO methods participate in that same transaction, hoping that the transaction will remain active and hibernate session will be available. But it does not work. Please suggest if anyone has ever been able to get such a configuration working. If needed, I can post the Hibernate configuration and log messages. Thanks a lot for help!   I want to check some things about the state of the session, the user agent, etc, and possibly take action and return a special view BEFORE a controller method gets a chance to execute. For example: Most common: User requests Home/Index System checks to make sure x != 0. x does not equal zero, so the Home/Index controller executes like normal. But, sometimes: User requests Home/Index System checks to make sure x != 0. x DOES equal zero. The user must be notified and the requested controller action cannot be allowed to execute. I think this involves the use of ActionFilters. But I have read about them and I don't understand if I can preempt the controller method and return a view before it executes. I am sure I could execute code before the controller method runs, but how do I keep it from running in some instances and return a custom view, or direct to a different controller method?

  I'm currently working on an application that has to render several Freemarker templates. So far I have a Generator class that handles the rendering. The class looks more or less like this: public class Generator { public static void generate(…) { renderTemplate1(); renderTemplate2(); renderTemplate3(); } private static void render(…) { // renders the template } private static void renderTemplate1() { // Create config object for the rendering // and calls render(); }; private static void renderTemplate1() { // Create config object for the rendering // and calls render(); }; … } This works, but it doesn't really feel right. What I would like to do is create a class that holds all the renderTemplate...() methods and then call them dynamically from my Generator class. This would make it cleaner and easier to extend. I was thinking about using something like reflection, but it doesn't really feel like a good solution either. Any idea on how to implement this properly ?

  Background: I am customizing an existing ASP .NET / C# application. It has it's own little "framework" and conventions for developers to follow when extending/customizing its functionality. I am currently extending some of it's administrative functionality, to which the framework provides a contract to enforce implementation of the GetAdministrationInterface() method, which returns System.Web.UI.Control. This method is called during the Page_Load() method of the page hosting the GUI interface. Problem: I have three buttons in my GUI, each of which have been assigned an Event Handler. My administration GUI loads up perfectly fine, but clicking any of the buttons doesn't do what I expect them to do. However, when I click them a second time, the buttons work. I placed breakpoints at the the beginning of each event handler method and stepped through my code. On the first click, none of the event handlers are triggered. On the second click, they are triggered. Any ideas?   As per Ruby's documentation, the Enumerator object uses the each method (to enumerate) if no target method is provided to the to_enum or enum_for methods. Now, let's take the following monkey patch and its enumerator, as an example o = Object.new def o.each yield 1 yield 2 yield 3 end e = o.to_enum loop do puts e.next end Given that the Enumerator object uses the each method to answer when next is called, how do calls to the each method look like, every time next is called? Does the Enumeartor class pre-load all the contents of o.each and creates a local copy for enumeration? Or is there some sort of Ruby magic that hangs the operations at each yield statement until next is called on the enumeartor? If an internal copy is made, is it a deep copy? What about I/O objects that could be used for external enumeration? I'm using Ruby 1.9.2.

  I'm getting an error in a JBOSS application: Static Method [addHeader] not found on JavaBean [class com.ppnet.webservice.WebserviceHeaderWriter] I have checked the WebserviceHeaderWriter.jar that gets deployed into JBOSS and checked it in eclipse. It looks as if it should have this method on it. I think that the JBoss application might be loading a different version of the WebserviceHeaderWriter.jar without this method on it, is there a way to check the location of the file that is getting loaded?
