• Windows Telephone Scam Continues to Circulate

  Microsoft addressed the scam via a blog post during the middle of last year. Cyberthieves call homes in English-speaking countries after finding their phone numbers in telephone directories. The callers usually identify themselves as engineers from Windows Support or other legitimate-sounding organizations. Now this is causing me a bit of problems. Since its not necessary to work at your workplace only you are asked anytime of your vacation or week-off to help out the client on reported bug. Also if you do enjoy doing it at your pass time, any one seeing you stare at the computer may treat you workaholic which I don't enjoy. How do you make them realize that its not just about the work.It can be a hobby also. In my understanding a workaholic is a person who works to earn but an enthusiast is the one who works to learn.

• How can I redirect any kind of access to my site to somewhere else, except for me?

  My site, www.example.com has a MyBB forum installation, and has many users constantly checking it out. I would like to make a major change to it - basically, I want to delete everything it has and start clean. However, this rebuilding process may take me hours since I need to do a lot of things. Thus, whenever an user tries to enter any part of my site (www.example.com, www.example.com/blog etc), the user will always be redirected to www.example.com/underconstruction so they can see a nice HTML site explaining the current situation. But not only that - while I am configuring my site, I need to visit it myself to make sure things do work live. So basically, it has to redirect everyone who isn't me. Is that possible in any way? I am using GoDaddy hosting.

• Installer doesn't recognise windows 7 install

  I will start off saying I searched a bit for this problem with little success. You see, I am an utmost noob when it comes to Ubuntu and Linux based OS (hence why I want to install it and discover it) and the thread I found were too specific for me to do anything with. Therefore, if you find a thread that is noob-friendly and answers my question, please link it below or please try to answer as simply as possible :) The problem: I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit alongside Windows 7 on my main hard drive (to get the choice which one to start when booting). Pop the CD in, reboot and get to the installer screen. I know I'm supposed to have 3 options, but I'm only given the option to erase my hard drive or "do something else". Therefore, my question is: how do I make Ubuntu recognise Windows 7, so it may install alongside it?

• Cannot make NVIDIA driver work with Ubuntu 12.10

  I seem to have a problem similar to many but I didn't manage to get it solved: have a Lenovo N581 with an NVIDIA GeForce 610M have just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits, + KDE and am trying to have my NVIDIA card work. Have tried all workarounds posted: purge nvidia, install kernel source/headers and then reinstall nvidia-current-updates (or just nvidia-current), do "sudo nvidia-xconfig". It does create a xorg.conf but does not much (no Module Section by the way). The result is that my system (jokey) tells me that the driver is there but not in use and I only get a 640x480 resolution. If I try to launch nvidia-settings it does indeed tell me that the nvidia driver is not used. I do all this under kde but I guess it does matter at this stage. Any hint of how to resolve this? I feel stuck and cannot use any of the acceleration which is partly why I got that laptop in the first place... thanks for any help/advise you may provide!

• Packaging an application written in C

  I have an application written in C. What I have is a bunch of c files and some .h files. Also, I created a Makefile to do compilation. How can I compile this into a deb package. I searched google, and put everything into a "name_0.1.orig.tar.gz" file and created a folder named "name-0.1", then inside that folder, "dh_make" Skipping creating ../name_0.1.orig.tar.gz because it already exists Currently there is no top level Makefile. This may require additional tuning. Done. Please edit the files in the debian/ subdirectory now. You should also check that the name Makefiles install into $DESTDIR and not in / . I have a Makefile in name.tar.gz, why it is not recognizing ?

• Oneiric updates cause "Window Creation Error" in Second Life client

  With the latest Oneiric updates, I've been unable to use Second Life, a virtual reality simulator, in Ubuntu. I assume it has something to do with the NVidia driver, since the error in the console says: WARNING: createWindow: LLWindowManager::create() : Error creating window. WARNING: LLViewerWindow: Failed to create window, to be shutting Down, be sure your graphics driver is updated I guess I could file a bug on Launchpad, but I'm not sure where to file it. Does anyone have any insight into what may be causing this problem? It was working fine a week ago, and older viewers (Imprudence viewer anyway) still work fine.

  I am planning to set up a streaming server purely for internet radio using Icecast2. what software packages do i require during Ubuntu installation and any third party apps i may require. I am going to use BUTT(Broadcast using this tool) Encoder and would like to be able to run BUTT on any computer so that other people can broadcast to my server from anywhere. I am looking for tips or tutorials on how to achieve the above. I mainly need info on cofiguring Ubuntu Server and icecast2. Also GUI? if so what one. Preferablly lightweight. • updating to 3.0.0-18-generic linux kernel is causing system instability - and no backwords compatability

  I was prompted for an update of kernel 3.0.0-18-generic, so I upgraded and rebooted my system now its behaving really strange. Applications are crashing . System is randomly restarting Files are randomly disappearing off of my desktop I've tried booting into Linux kernel 3.0.0-17-generic but it doesn't help. Subsequently I am not able to connect to the INTERNET when I use the 3.0.0-17-generic kernel. Are there any ideas on what may be wrong? How I can go about debugging this?

• How to display time in the top panel?

  I thought I already had the time up there in the top bar, and it may have been so in previous Ubuntu versions (don't remember, my Ubuntu laptop is just one of three computers I use). Only that I just noticed - me being someone who never wears a watch, has the cellphone turned off 95% of the time and relying on the computer to tell the time - that there is no time being displayed anywhere, and I had expected it in the top bar on the Unity desktop. I searched around but found no obvious solution, but I'm sure someone immediately knows how I can get my time (back?) into the top bar?

• Is there a certain way that I have to include a library and it's license?

  I know this may be a dumb question, but I'm only 15 so I don't really know how the legal part of it works. When I choose a .dll to be included in my project, Visual Studio only includes the .dll file with my project (of course) so I just copy the license and stick it in a folder called licenses. But now, I'm going to be making a program for a contest so I need to make sure I have the licenses done right or I'll get disqualified. So is there any specific location I have to keep the licenses in my project, is there a way for Visual Studio to automatically copy the license the way it does with .dll files and is there anything else I have to watch out for legally? PS: If it matters the libraries I'm planning on using right now are WriteableBitmapEx and AvalonDock Thanks

• Massive vehicular network simulator

  I am interested in making a vehicular network simulator (vehicular network as in vehicles can be equipped with radios and when they come in range they can talk with each other). I want to be able to scale to 1000s of nodes if not more. I am quite frankly torn on how to do, or even which language to use or whether I should instead be using some other piece of software/code. I know that this should depend on a lot of design decisions that I may have, but it would be great if somebody can point me towards the right direction. I was planning to use a multi-threaded architecture, but not sure whether it will add to the complication or make it easier. Also if I go for a multi-threaded architecutre, do you think that 'Go' language will be a good choice?

We are currently using the Ext 4.0 framework but there are questions being raised that it may not be the right framework to use. I like what Ext has to offer (rich GUIs, data package and class system) are there other frameworks out there that are similar? Are there frameworks out there tailored to medium/large software companies? Info: Potentially 100's of developers converting thick client screens to the web. If you occasionally edit files as root (I never do, I always use pfexec, wink wink), then you may have noticed that the vim (Vi Improved) editor that normally does filename completion via the <Tab> key now gives you something like: :e /etc/mo^I when you try to open up /etc/motd with a little less typing So, there are at least three solutions to this: Use <Ctrl>-E instead of <Tab> Use the "-N" flag when you start Vim :set wildchar=<Tab> (Enter those 5 characters, not an actual Tab) The reason for this? It seems that when you are root, Vim sets it's "compatible" flag, which makes it behave more like its ancestor vi. In turn this makes Vim set 'wildchar' to <Ctrl>-E. • How do you ensure consistent experience across multiple graphics cards (or even driver versions)?

  So I was writing a simple 2D game with OpenGL and SDL and had this problem when there was awful tearing when running in windowed mode (even though I explicitly asked SDL_SetVideoMode to use double buffering). Didn't worry about it all too much because most of the time the game grabs the entire screen, windowed mode is just for debugging. Anyway, yesterday I updated my nVidia drivers and tearing disappeared, the game runs smooth and looks nice in windowed mode too. I can see how the problem may be in the graphics driver, but this leads to a question. Obviously, professional game developers have to deal with a lot of different hardware/software configurations. What are the techniques they use to make sure the game looks the roughly the same on different graphics cards or even the same model of graphics card, but with different driver versions?

• Preparing for Interview: I feel like, I wanna start coding all data structures again.... Is it a right way to start?

  I started preparing for my interview. I will be graduating this May. Right now, I am doing an internship in an product based company, so I did my fair share of preparation. The thing is, whenever, I try to do something, I always think that I should start everything from page 1. It is sometimes not at all helpful.... For example, reading a programming book from page 1 is not going to helpful, as I never completed one and always stopped half way through or rushed through towards deadlines. I am facing a similar situation now. I feel like, I wanna start coding all data structures from first(I attempted and finished atleast 6-7 last fall, preparing for interview). Now I feel like, I wanna code everything from first, instead of attempting something new.... I am not quite sure, what this is, but this is the way I have been..... LOL
