• Webservice and ORM Framework?

  Does anybody know a good web framework that includes an ORM mapper and allows straight forward implementation of web services? I'm looking for a framework written in PHP or C++. I'm looking for the following features (not all of them required, some will do nicely) data definition in one place used by database and web service WSDL generation XML output/JSON output boilerplate code generation So what I would like is a framework that let's me specify the objects, the web service functions on those objects and then generate everything that is required leaving me to fill the business logic (connecting the database to the web service). Anything like that out there? Background information for why I need this: I'm looking into creating a web project: the client is a rich web application that fetches all its data using AJAX. It will be completely custom made using only a low level javascript library. The server back end is supposed to serve static content and javascript (basically the rich web application) and to provide a RESTful web service API (which I would like to implement using aforementioned framework).

• How can I test my iPhone app on earlier than SDK 3.0 simulator, make sure it work?

  Hi Stackers! I wrote iPhone application. Very simple! It use Cocos2D only, and all other features is very basic, no accelerometer, no camera, nothing. Just buttons and sounds. I think every iPhone can run this app (there is no limits on Cocos2D right?), but my XCode only let me use 3.0 and upwards. I want to confirm 1 thing and ask one thing: If I put "iPhone OS 2.0" in my iPhone OS Deployment Target in XCode, but my "Active SDK" in XCode still says 3.0, if I compile using this and submit to App Store, when it goes up, people who use 2.0 can still download and use the game yes? Is there way I can test in a 2.0 simulator to make sure it works? My XCode only have 3.0 and higher simulation.

• Completely remove ViewState for specific pages

  Hi everybody, I have a site that features some pages which do not require any post-back functionality. They simply display static HTML and don't even have any associated code. However, since the Master Page has a <form runat="server"> tag which wraps all ContentPlaceHolders, the resulting HTML always contains the ViewState field, i.e: <input type="hidden" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwUKMjEwNDQyMTMxM2Rk0XhpfvawD3g+fsmZqmeRoPnb9kI=" /> I realize, that when decrypted, this string corresponds to the <form> tag which I cannot remove. However, I would still like to remove the ViewState field for pages that only display static HTML. Is it possible?

• Django 1.2 crash course needed

  I know Python but I've never used Django. What do I need to know about Django 1.2 to port my typical PHP CRUD web application in one weekend? (Yes I've read Joel Spolsky's Netscape article :-)) I'm reading this tutorial right now and it's excellent. I'm already playing around with inspectdb to generate my models from the existing schema. I'm planning to use the following features of Django this weekend: Fragment caching Static asset versioning (for far future expires) Schema migrations (or whatever they're called in Django) Auto-admin (and customize it later) The test framework ...other stuff I probably don't know about yet I'm familiar with all these concepts in other languages/frameworks, except for the ORM which I've never used. I know SQL pretty well though. Any links, sage bits of advice, gotchas, stuff not mentioned in the (excellent) tutorial/docs, or stuff that is mentioned but warrants repeating == very welcome. • C++ option/long option implementation

  I am working on a parser for meta programming language using C++ on Linux platform. Right now, I need to implement option/long option for the parser to provide some additional features. Basically, if the user pass in some additional option, the parser needs to store statistics while parsing the text files. I can think of two ways to implement it. One way is to user global to store options entered by users. Another way is to create a singleton class to store options. So I would like to know if there is any other way to implement it. The book makes the following comment: Previous editions of this book tackled web services, a feature that allows you to create code routines that can be called by other applications over the Internet.Web services are more interesting when considering rich client development (because they allow you to give web features to ordinary desktop applications),and they’re in the process of being replaced by a new technology known as WCF (Windows Communication Foundation). For those reasons, web services aren’t covered in this book.However,if you want to branch out and explore the web service world,you can download the web service chapters from the previous edition of this book from the book’s download page.The information in these chapters still applies to ASP.NET 3.5,because the web service feature hasn’t changed. Can someone offer, in "layman's terms" what exactly a web service is and if, indeed, they are being replaced, at least in .Net, with WCF? What would be a practical example of a web service? Are they stand alone programs that run on a web server and are invoked by a client or clients?

I've recenlty discovered python and its real power (I still don't understand why this is not always the best product that becomes the most famous). I've just discovered mod_python for Apache. I've already googled but without success things like mod_python vs mod_php. I wanted to know the differences between the two mod_php and mod_python in terms of: speed productivity maintainance (I know `python is most productive and maintainable language in the world, but is it the same for Web programming with Apache) availability of features e.g, cookies and session handling, databases, protocols, etc.

• Seam app with JBoss 'minimal' Config?

  I'd like to improve the performance of my Seam apps and JBoss appserver, particularly by removing things that aren't necessary in the standard configuration. Ideally, I'd like to be able to run it using the "minimal" profile. Can anyone give me any guidance as to what is needed to run a Seam app using "minimal"? Here are the kind of things my app requires: JPA, using Hibernate with a PostgreSQL backend EJB3 JSF (RichFaces/Facelets) E-mail, eventually, although not required at this particular moment I'll be developing my app using JBoss Tools on Eclipse, so I would also need anything that is required by the tools for development and deployment. I've found that the default configuration just has too many additional components and features installed by default, and that greatly affects performance when I'm trying to develop. Any help you can give would be great! Thanks!

• Which external DSLs do you like to use?

  The reason I'm asking is because right now there seems to be tendency to make DSLs internal. One example is LINQ in C# and VB. You can use it against in-memory objects, or you can use it as a replacement of SQL or other external DSL. Another example is HTML5 vs XHTML2. XHTML2 supported decentralized extensibility through namespaces, in other words you embed external DSL code (XForms, SVG, MathML, etc.) in your XHTML code. Sadly HTML5 doesn't seem to have such mechanism, instead new features are internal (e.g. <canvas> instead of SVG). I'd like to know what other developers think about this. Do you like using external DSLs ? Which ones ? If not, why ?

• Is my TFS2010 backup/restore hosed?

  Hi all, I recently set up a sandbox TFS to test TFS-specific features without interfering with the production TFS. I was happy I did this sooner than I thought--I hadn't been backing up the encryption key from SSRS and upon restoring the reporting databases, they remained inactive, requiring initialization that could only come from applying the encryption key. Said encryption key was lost when I nuked the partition after backing up the TFS databases. The only option I seemed to have is to delete the encrypted data. I'm fine with this, since there wasn't much in there to begin with, however once they're deleted I'm not quite sure how to configure TFS to recognize a new installation of these services while using the restored versions of everything else. Unfortunately, the TFS help file doesn't seem to account for this state though. Is there a way to essentially rebuild the reporting and analysis databases? Or are they gone forever?

• Seam/Hibernate and PostgreSQL -- Any issues?

  I'm currently working on a project that makes use of Seam/Hibernate (JPA) on MySQL. I'm reconsidering moving towards PostgreSQL after investigating some of the features that it provides. My question is, is there anything I need to worry about with this configuration? Limitations? Gotchas? Things to watch out for? There will be some BLOBs stored in the database (images, X.509 certificates, etc.) Will that be a problem using PostgreSQL? Are there any particular configuration changes or tweaks that I should make in my Hibernate configuration? Thanks for any advice you can give!

• MATLAB: draw centroids

  Hello - my main question is given a feature centroid, how can I draw it in MATLAB? In more detail, I have an NxNx3 image (an rgb image) of which I take 4x4 blocks and compute a 6-dimensional feature vector for each block. I store these feature vectors in an Mx6 matrix on which I run kmeans function and obtain the centroids in a kx6 matrix, where k is the number of clusters and 6 is the number of features for each block. How can I draw these center clusters in my image in order to visualize if the algorithm is performing the way I wish it to perform? Or if anyone has any other way/suggestions on how I can visualize the centroids on my image, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

• Group SQL tables in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio object explorer

  I have a table which has approximately sixty tables, and other tables are added constantly. Each table is a part of a schema. A such quantity of tables makes it difficult to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. For example, I must scroll up in object explorer to access database related functions, or scroll down each time I need to access Views or Security features. Is it possible to group several tables to be able to expand or collapse them in Object Explorer? Maybe a folder may be displayed for each schema, letting collapse the folders I don't need to use?

• How to Integrate SharePoint 2007/2010 and Google Apps?

  Hello All, My (smaller) company has an existing Google Apps Deployment, used for E-Mail / Calendar, etc. I'm looking into a SharePoint setup (2010 most likely). One of the best features is that new events are added to one's Outlook Calendar, e-mails can be sent automatically, etc. Naturally, this works best out-of-the-box with Exchange. I know I can add my own OpenID login system via an OpenID provider for SharePoint and get my users into the system. My question is, can anyone recommend the best way to go about making sure that events automatically find their way into users' calendars and e-mails on the Google Apps system? This would enable us to deploy SharePoint without worrying about migrating our e-mail system to Exchange first (Google Apps is more cost-effective for our needs and I'm required to keep it.)   Hi I am implementing an IM app on iOS. I found that three20 library has a TTStyledTextLabel which provides cool features like showing images and url links. However I want to embed the TTStyledTextLabel in a message bubble (just like the sms app shipped with iphone does), where I need the label to adjust its size according to the text length. I found that TTStyledTextLabel can adjust its height according to its width, but I don't know how to make it shrink horizontally when the text is very short and can't fill up a whole line. Any suggestions?

• How to set breakpoint in inline Javascript in Google Chrome browser for linux?

  When I open Developer Tools in Google Chrome, I see all kinds useless crap like Profiles, Timelines, not to mentions Audits but basic functionality like being able to set breakpoint both in js files and within html javascript code is missing!. I tried to use javascript Console which itself is buggy ( like when once it encounter JS error, cannot get out of it unless refresh the whole page useless when ajax is involved). I am surprised google engineers still have not figured this out if these features still not available. If they are and there is some twisted way to do this, can some one help?

• Tabcontainer in Master Page not working as expected

  Isn't TABCONTAINER supposed to be used in a MASTERPAGE? I started building my application in a single .aspx page with a tabcontainer to separate the different features in the application. My idea was to later break it up into individual pages with less code in each of them. I thought the use of a masterpage would be the perfect solutions... of course, this didn't work as expected. The problem is that all tabs, except the one related to the page loaded, for example tab1.aspx, are empty. If tab2.aspx is loaded, only tab2 is filled and so on. Is this a known bug or by design?

• What is the point of heightmaps?

  I've been pondering this question awhile now... many 3d engines support advanced terrain rendering using quadtrees, LOD... all the features you expect. But every engine I've seen loads height data from heightmaps... grayscale bitmaps. I just can't understand how this is useful - each point in a heightmap can have one of 256 values. But what if you wanted to model Mt. Everest? with detail of 1 meter, or even greater? That's far outside the range of 256. Of course I understand that you can implement your own terrain format to achieve this, but I just can't see why heightmaps are so widely used despite their great limitations.

• Conflict resolution merge commit seems incomplete

  There was a feature branch with conflicts. These were resolved and the resolution committed. Unfortunately, I botched the merge and a couple previously-released features regressed - this is verified by doing a diff between the merge commit sha1 and that of the previous tag. When I do git show <sha1 for merge commit> all changes are innocuous. When I do git log -Sunique_variable_added_for_feature_and_lost_after_botched_merge, I only see the commit that added unique_variable_... but not the problematic deletion from the bad merge. However, when I took the ignominious step of viewing the sha1 for the commit in a gui git client like Tower, I can clearly see the botched lines. Is there an additional switch used by Tower that I've missed entirely? Why didn't pickaxe pick up the deletion implicit in the merge commit?

• OpenLayers: Get resolution of map in a given projection (4326)

  I'm using OpenLayers to display OpenStreetMap maps. (Though, I'd assume this should be general enough to work for any map product...) I'm displaying some very sophisticated vector overlays, and the amount and resolution of the features I'm returning from the server via GeoJSON to overlay has proven too much for many computers. What I'd like to do now instead is to only send data befitting the resolution of the current zoom. This should be relatively easy to do using the getResolution and calculateBounds methods on the Map object. calculateBounds returns a Bounds object that then can be transformed between the map projection and display projection. How do I transform the resolution into my desired projection (4326 in this case)?

• Strategy for developing a multi function asp.net web application

  I'm about to start a new project and want some advice on how to implement. I need a web application which contains a booking module for reserving timeslots, and a time management module which will enable employees to clock in / clock out. If I am writing an update to the time managment module, I don't want to disrupt the booking engine availability by releasing a new solution containing both modules. to make things more difficult, there is some shared functionality like common users, roles and security. Here's a suggestion I've gotten, which sounds a bit cruddy, but may be functional. Write a 'container' web application which consists of basically a frame, and authentication / security features. This then has links which, will load the 2 independantly built and released web applications into the frame. I can see that say, if I wanted to update the time management module, I would only need to build and release this separately, and the rest of the solution would be 'untouched' Any better alternatives?
