• Converting Encrypted Values

  Your database has been protecting sensitive data at rest using the cell-level encryption features of SQL Server for quite sometime. The employees in the auditing department have been inviting you to their after-work gatherings and buying you drinks. Thousands of customers implicitly include you in their prayers of thanks giving as their identities remain safe in your company's database. The cipher text resting snuggly in a column of the varbinary data type is great for security; but it can create some interesting challenges when interacting with other data types such as the XML data type. The XML data type is one that is often used as a message type for the Service Broker feature of SQL Server. It also can be an interesting data type to capture for auditing or integrating with external systems. The challenge that cipher text presents is that the need for decryption remains even after it has experienced its XML metamorphosis. Quite an interesting challenge nonetheless; but fear not. There is a solution. To simulate this scenario, we first will want to create a plain text value for us to encrypt. We will do this by creating a variable to store our plain text value: -- set plain text value DECLARE @PlainText NVARCHAR(255); SET @PlainText = 'This is plain text to encrypt'; The next step will be to create a variable that will store the cipher text that is generated from the encryption process. We will populate this variable by using a pre-defined symmetric key and certificate combination: -- encrypt plain text value DECLARE @CipherText VARBINARY(MAX); OPEN SYMMETRIC KEY SymKey     DECRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE SymCert     WITH PASSWORD='mypassword2010';     SET @CipherText = EncryptByKey                          (                            Key_GUID('SymKey'),                            @PlainText                           ); CLOSE ALL SYMMETRIC KEYS; The value of our newly generated cipher text is 0x006E12933CBFB0469F79ABCC79A583--. This will be important as we reference our cipher text later in this post. Our final step in preparing our scenario is to create a table variable to simulate the existence of a table that contains a column used to hold encrypted values. Once this table variable has been created, populate the table variable with the newly generated cipher text: -- capture value in table variable DECLARE @tbl TABLE (EncVal varbinary(MAX)); INSERT INTO @tbl (EncVal) VALUES (@CipherText); We are now ready to experience the challenge of capturing our encrypted column in an XML data type using the FOR XML clause: -- capture set in xml DECLARE @xml XML; SET @xml = (SELECT               EncVal             FROM @tbl AS MYTABLE             FOR XML AUTO, BINARY BASE64, ROOT('root')); If you add the SELECT @XML statement at the end of this portion of the code you will see the contents of the XML data in its raw format: <root>   <MYTABLE EncVal="AG4Skzy/sEafeavMeaWDBwEAAACE--" /> </root> Strangely, the value that is captured appears nothing like the value that was created through the encryption process. The result being that when this XML is converted into a readable data set the encrypted value will not be able to be decrypted, even with access to the symmetric key and certificate used to perform the decryption. An immediate thought might be to convert the varbinary data type to either a varchar or nvarchar before creating the XML data. This approach makes good sense. The code for this might look something like the following: -- capture set in xml DECLARE @xml XML; SET @xml = (SELECT              CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),EncVal) AS EncVal             FROM @tbl AS MYTABLE             FOR XML AUTO, BINARY BASE64, ROOT('root')); However, this results in the following error: Msg 9420, Level 16, State 1, Line 26 XML parsing: line 1, character 37, illegal xml character A quick query that returns CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),EncVal) reveals that the value that is causing the error looks like something off of a genuine Chinese menu. While this situation does present us with one of those spine-tingling, expletive-generating challenges, rest assured that this approach is on the right track. With the addition of the "style" argument to the CONVERT method, our solution is at hand. When dealing with converting varbinary data types we have three styles available to us: - The first is to not include the style parameter, or use the value of "0". As we see, this style will not work for us. - The second option is to use the value of "1" will keep our varbinary value including the "0x" prefix. In our case, the value will be 0x006E12933CBFB0469F79ABCC79A583-- - The third option is to use the value of "2" which will chop the "0x" prefix off of our varbinary value. So, essentially this task has burned 1 hour per day Sprint Burn Down Chart – What’s not possible? The Sprint burn down chart is calculated from the System.AuthorizedDate and not the System.ChangedDate/System.CreatedDate. So, though you can change the System.ChangedDate and System.CreatedDate to historic dates you will not be able to synthesize the sprint burn down chart. Image 1 – By changing the Created Date and Changed Date to ‘18/Oct/2012’ you would have expected the burn down to have been impacted, but it won’t be, because the sprint burn down chart uses the value of field ‘System.AuthorizedDate’ to calculate the unfinished work points. The AsOf queries that are used to calculate the unfinished work points use the value of the field ‘System.AuthorizedDate’. Image 2 – Using the above code I burned down 1 hour effort per day over 5 days from the task work item, I would have expected the sprint burn down to show a constant burn down, instead the burn down shows the effort exhausted on the 24th itself. Simply because the burn down is calculated using the ‘System.AuthorizedDate’. Now you would ask… “Can I change the value of the field System.AuthorizedDate to a historic date” Unfortunately that’s not possible! You will run into the exception ValidationException –  “TF26194: The value for field ‘Authorized Date’ cannot be changed.” Conclusion - You need to be a member of the Project Collection Service account group in order to set the fields ‘System.ChangedDate’ and ‘System.CreatedDate’ to historic dates - You need to instantiate the WorkItemStore using the flag ByPassValidation - The System.ChangedDate needs to be set to a historic date at the time of work item creation. You cannot reset the ChangedDate to a date earlier than the existing ChangedDate and you cannot reset the ChangedDate to a date greater than the current date time. - The System.CreatedDate can only be reset after a work item has been created. You cannot set the CreatedDate at the time of work item creation. The CreatedDate cannot be greater than the current date. You can however reset the CreatedDate to a date earlier than the existing value. - You will not be able to synthesize the Sprint burn down chart by changing the value of System.ChangedDate and System.CreatedDate to historic dates, since the burn down chart uses AsOf queries to calculate the unfinished work points which internally uses the System.AuthorizedDate and NOT the System.ChangedDate & System.CreatedDate - System.AuthorizedDate cannot be set to a historic date using the TFS API Read other posts on using the TFS API here… Enjoy!

Most topics covering jqgrid and asp.net seem to relate to just receiving JSON, or working in the MVC framework, or utilizing other handlers or web services... but not many dealt with actually passing parameters back to an actual webmethod in the codebehind. Furthermore, scarce are the examples that contain successful implementation the AJAX paging, sorting, or searching along with LINQ to SQL for asp.net jqGrid. That file will give you the ability to utilized dynamic ORDERBY clause since we don't know what column we're filtering by except on the initial load. To serialize the JSON back from the C-sharp to the JS, I incorporated the James Newton-King JSON.net DLL found here : http://json.codeplex.com/releases/view/37810.   Can this be done? And if not, how far down towards Core Audio do I need to go (what method of recording should I be using instead)? I've noticed the behavior of AVAudioRecorder is to overwrite a file if it finds one at the path provided when you request that it record again, so I know that's not going to work. I'm also curious about file format restriction with this idea. Can you effectively resume an AAC or IMA4 encoding (the length of the files I want to record make WAV and probably even Apple Lossless prohibitive)? Thanks.

  I downloaded the SharpSVN example they give to try and test it out but I get this error when I try and run it. System.BadImageFormatException {"Could not load file or assembly 'SharpSvn, Version=1.4999.376.29668, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=d729672594885a28' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format."} After I downloaded I went to load the project, did the requested conversion with no errors then just tried to run it. Haven't been able to find a solution online.

  Is it possible programmatically to discover the exported names (globals, entry points, whatever) in a Windows DLL file without implementing a parser for the binary executable file format itself? I know there are tools to do this (though no open source ones I've found), but I'm curious whether there is a Windows API to accomplish the same thing or whether such tools operate merely by examining the binary file directly. I suspect there is an API for .NET libraries: if that's the case then is there a similar one for native DLLs? Edit: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1128150 is basically an exact duplicate. The answer there is roughly "there is no API, but you can hack it using LoadLibraryEx() and navigating a few resulting data structures". I want to be able to both serialize and deserialize the XML between XML and C# objects, however, using the objects generated by xsd.exe, the C# serialization includes the xmlns:xsi..., xsi:... etc XML attributes on the root element of the document that gets generated. Is there anyway to disable this so that absolutely no XML attribute nodes get put out in the resulting XML ? The XML document should be elements only. Duplicate? In that 6 pages are having more static text and mere direct mapping and remaining two pages consists of table like data. one page contains huge table so i filled it directly with no problem by keeping a single table in detail band. now problem is that remaining one page. that page is having more than 5 small tables (two or four column). is t possible to have more that one table in a page in jasper reports ? i am using jasper reports and for designing jasper assistant/ireports.

  Hello I'm trying to get adaptive thresholding working in the python binding to opencv (the swig one - cannot get opencv 2.0 working as I am using a beagleboard as the cross compiling is not working yet). I have a greyscale image (ccg.jpg) and the following code import opencv from opencv import highgui img = highgui.cvLoadImage("ccg.png") img_bw = opencv.cvCreateImage(opencv.cvGetSize(img), opencv.IPL_DEPTH_8U, 1) opencv.cvAdaptiveThreshold(img, img_bw, 125, opencv.CV_ADAPTIVE_THRESH_MEAN_C, opencv.CV_THRESH_BINARY, 7, 10) When I run this I get the error: RuntimeError: openCV Error: Status=Formats of input arguments do not match function name=cvAdaptiveThreshold error messgae= file_name=cvadapthresh.cpp line=122 I've also tried having both the source and dest arguments both the same (greyscale) and I get the error 'Unsupported format or combination of formats'.   I am writing a blackberry application where i want to store the data returned by a web service in my BB device.Earlier i was going to use SQLite for storing the data in mobile but as i googled and also did programming using SQLite and found that some BB devices dont support SQLite library and fail to create the database.Then i decided to keep the data returned by webservice in a XML format on my BB device. I just want to know is there any method or way in blackberry through which i can parse the data stored in xml,update it,or directly access a particular record stored in the xml instead of traversing the whole xml n times and finding the matched record. • Telerik RadEditor filestream/string save to RTF

  Hi, The required functionality I am aiming for is to pull out RTF content from a database, edit it through a web interface (with a WYSIWYG editor) and then place the modified text back in to the database (in RTF format). The control that I am using to do this is Telerik RadEditor (we have a license already for these controls). In the most recent version there appears to be functionality to load in RTF content from a string or a stream, but the only method I can see that is exposed for getting RTF back out is exportToRTF(); this method modified the headers and allows you to save a RTF version of the content you have just edited as a file. The functionality to convert from HTML to RTF must exist somewhere within their library as you can export a RTF file, but I can not find any publicly exposed methods to pass this in to a stream or a string. Does anybody know of a way that I can convert the HTML back to RTF using the Telerik libraries without saving out to a file? Thanks

  I want to write a simple program which shows my internet activity over a period of time (which site I visited, how many times and so on). I mostly use Google Chrome browser. I found out Chrome stores browser history at this location - C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default (please correct me if I'm wrong). How can I open the history files? They don't have any file extension. I could not open using notepad, SQLite browser. How do I access this data programmatically? I want to know which file format it is and how to read it using a programming language like C#.

  I am currently using the following to filter my JTable RowFilter.regexFilter( Pattern.compile(textField.getText(), Pattern.CASE_INSENSITIVE).toString(), columns ); How do I format my textField or filter so if I want to filter multiple columns I can do that. Right now I can filter multiple columns but my filter can only be of one of the columns An example might help my explanation better: Name Grade GPA Zac A 4.0 Zac F 1.0 Mike A 4.0 Dan C 2.0 The text field would contain Zac A or something similar and it would show the first Zac row if columns was int[]{0, 1}. Right now if I do the above I get nothing. The filter Zac works but I get both Zac's. A also works but I would then get Zac A 4.0 and Mike A 3.0. I hope I have explained my problem well. Please let me know if you do not understand.

• Open excel 2007 excel files and save as 97-2003 formats in VBA

  I have a weird situation where I have a set of excel files, all having the extension .xls., in a directory where I can open all of them just fine in Excel 2007. The odd thing is that I cannot open them in Excel 2003, on the same machine, without opening the file first in 2007 and going and saving the file as an "Excel 97-2003 Workbook". Before I save the file as an "Excel 97-2003 Workbook" from Excel 2007, when I open the excel files in 2003 I get the error that the file is not in a recognizable format. So my question is: if I already have the excel file opened in 2007 and I already have the file name of the open file stored in a variable, programatically how can I mimic the action of going up to the "office button" in the upper right and selecting, "save as" and then selecting "Excel 97-2003 Workbook"? I've tried something like the below but it does not save the file at all: ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs TempFilePath & TempFileName & ".xls", FileFormat:=56 Thanks for any help or guidance!
