• About to graduage from good school without any progamming skills

  Not sure if it is good place to ask this question, but found this section to be suitable. I am about to graduate from good school (in the US) with Computer Science degree, having good grades and high GPA. I have no freaking clue how to write a good program, how to properly test it... nada, zero. We were never been tough how to write software. Ye, sure the Comp. Architecture class is important, and I can tell you a lot about how MIPS processor works, and I can tell you about Binary Trees and Red-Black Trees and running time of operations in Big Oh, but it has nothing to do with programming in "real" life. For god sake, none of my classmates know how to use STLs or write templated code !!! To be honest, I found that many of my classes to be waste of time. What should I do ? How to step into real life and learn how to program ?

• Which iso image do I need to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a Macbook Pro so that it boots using UEFI?

  Unlike with earlier releases, the website is unclear on giving a straight recommendation for installing ubuntu on a mac: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ I've read several times, that I should use an alternative image. But this is only offered as 64-bit. However, I'm also told to rather use 32-bit images for better software compability. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64+mac.iso Even though I should only use alternative images, there is offered a standard desktop image which is "adjusted to work properly on Mac systems". http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64+mac.iso Question Which image should I take? Do both of these images offer UEFI boot? I've tried both of them already, but both have setup an install with BIOS emulation. This is quite annoying because of the short battery life and high temperatures which are harmful to battery longevity.

  First, thank you in advance for any help that you can give a recent transplant from Windows to Ubuntu. I have a question that I have been seeking the answer too but I draw a blank at every turn. I design websites, free of charge, for nonprofit organizations that are just starting and do not have the resources to hire a design firm. I am in need of a flash/swf editor and compiler. I had a program that I used with the awful previous O/S, however WINE would not run the program. Thank you in advance for any help that you can offer. Since I do not earn a dime for doing this, I would prefer if the program was open source, however any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

• Is programming or computer science in general, all about algorithms?

  As a grad student, I find it more and more common for prestigious companies (like Google, Facebook, Microsoft,...) to put algorithm questions in their test and interviews. A few startups I applied to also asked about algorithms. I wonder if algorithms fluency is the most important thing for software developer in those companies? If the answer being yes, what are the best method or resources for one to learn & practice about algorithms effectively? I can't seem to get interested in solving seemingly too complicated problems found in most textbook or websites. Though easily understand basic algorithms (like quicksort, bubblesort,...), I find it immensely difficult to remember and reuse them later. Thanks. P/S: If you ask me what I like, it's building good softwares to solve users' problems innovatively. I suppose that does not necessarily mean the software has to be very complicated.

  What should drive the decision behind doing development upon one or more than one framework? For instance, an ERP is (mostly) run on a Windows station. It leverages full access to device's resources, like printers, barcode readers, fingerprint readers and the like. It's usually more responsive and easier do develop with. That being said, some parts of it must be accessed exclusively in self-service mode, by enterprise's customers, suppliers and partners. This could be accomplished with smartphones, tablets, or even desktops running a web browser. What are the economics behind that? Should two team be kept, each one doing work upon its own framework? Or the most permissive framework should be chosen? Should I care something other than HTML technologies? Should I consider native technology for each device?

  I'm currently working as an IT Administrator but I'm thinking of making a slight career change into programming. I want to focus my time and effort into learning some web based languages but feel is it achievable when working full time to expect to make much progress after a long days work? I love to read, but this is sometimes a hindrance. I have read on some resources that you will never make much progress unless you quit your 9-5 and dedicated 6 months to getting a fundamental understanding. Any feedback would be great.   Possible Duplicate: How can I explain object-oriented programming to someone who’s only coded in Fortran 77? My mother did her college thesis in Fortran, and now (over a decade later) needs to learn c++ for fluids simulations. She is able to understand all of the procedural programming, but no matter how hard I try to explain objects to her, it doesn't stick. (I do a lot of work with Java, so I know how objects work) I think I might be explaining it in too high-level ways, so it isn't really making sense to someone who's never worked with them at all and grew up in the age of purely functional programming.   Possible Duplicate: What are some good resources for generating privacy policies and terms of use? I am just about done creating my first web application. Since the application stores some user data, I want to make sure that I can not be held liable should something bad happen to the site. I googled around but I could only find boilerplate T&Cs for websites, not for web apps. Does anybody know where I can find such a boilerplate agreement that I can use? I realize that this won't be 100% security, but it's better than nothing I suppose.

It only actually tells users how to run JS code on page 311, where users are told of the following solutions: "Client-side JavaScript code is embedded within HTML documents in four ways: Inline, between a pair of <script> and </script> tags From an external file specified by the src attribute in a <script> tag In an HTML event handler attribute, such as onclick or onmouseover In a URL that uses the special javascript: protocol." I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

• Can a domain specific language be used to representing the Open SRD

  I am in the early stages of creating an open source C# library that would allow developers to drop in the open SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/) into an existing project. Abstracted it is a complex set of tightly coupled business rules. Having previously worked on an adaptive object model project for health care risk management I began with that pattern in mind. Due to the high coupling of rules it is becoming apparent that the project may require some kind of scripting. Have started researching DSL implementation I am now considering scraping the adaptive object model for a domain specific language. I have not work with domain specific languages so my question is it reasonable to assume a domain specific language can be used to representing the open SRD?

• Why is it good to split a program into multiple classes?

  I'm still a student in high school (entering 10th grade), and I have yet to take an actual computer course in school. Everything I've done so far is through books. Those books have taught me concepts such as inheritance, but how does splitting a program into multiple classes help? The books never told me. I'm asking this mainly because of a recent project. It's an arcade video game, sort of like a flash game as some people have said (although I have no idea what a flash game is). The thing is, it's only one class. It works perfectly fine (a little occasional lag however) with just one class. So, I'm just asking how splitting it into multiple classes would help it. This project was in JAVA and I am the only person working on it, for the record.

• Get and install Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS driver

  Recently, I changed my OS kernel from 10.04 to 11.10 (bugs), but after doing it, the video driver for the 8400 GS disappeared (was there in 10.04). I worked out the same procedure I did to install it in 10.04, mainly, sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-current sudo apt-get --purge autoremove sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -y install nvidia-current but it didn't work even though the commands seemed to install the driver without problems. • Ubuntu 13.10 vs 12.04 LTS

  I am migrating my workflow to ubuntu from windows. I have a macbook pro at home and I really enjoy being able to use the workspaces feature on ubuntu to increase my productivity. As myself being someone that isn't very familiar with doing command line things and hasn't worked with linux a whole lot other than doing basic commands like cd, ls, rm, screen, and sudo. I was wondering what you think would be the best choice for a ubuntu version. I am looking for ease of use as well as stability. I spend most of my time working with eclipse, as well as writing documents. On a side note, right now I have a pretty high end workstation, but I am using a crappy notebook 2.5 inch 1TB hard drive for my system. Would it be worth it to switch to a top of the line SSD, or would the difference not really be noticeable? How difficult would it be for a newcommer to setup the system with the os and important folders running on a SSD and then other folders for storage running on a HD.

Therefore, I am looking for information on what is useful to check before starting the game. As a simple example, Why check for a specific amount of memory? I have signed up at zymic for a free hosting (MySql included). Now please suggest me: the available IDEs for developing on PHP on windows OS and any beginner level resources that you have come across, for a .net/java guy which may help me to quickly figure out the differences would you advice me to go for frameworks like joomla etc as a beginner? or is it better i start exploring these after im familiar with PHP?
