• Ubuntu won't use my nvidia driver

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on a laptop that has both Intel Integrated Graphics and an Nvidia Geforce 540m. I installed the drivers properly, but I can't manage to actually use them. I'm stuck in 640x480 resolution and the drivers aren't detected anywhere. Each time I open the Nvidia settings menu it says: "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (Just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server." ^Doing so does not help. Anybody have any ideas?

• Can I remove the latest ubuntu version without having to reinstall the old version?

  I was using the 2.6 kernels with no problems, but when I updated to the 3.0 kernel, my bootup failed. I can manually boot with ctrl+alt+f1 startx and my login, but admittedly, i googled this and have no idea what I'm really doing. I have been trying to figure out how to go back to the old version, and eventually figured out the grub menu--i booted from all three 2.6 (.8, .10, and .11) editions of the previous version of ubuntu but they all had the same error as the 3.0 kernal. I can get logged in manually once the boot fails, but when i get to my desktop, wireless is not responsive and will not connect, and portable hard drives do not mount and/or are unresponsive. the previous version worked perfectly. I use an asus netbook. it's an eee pc. i don't have two OSs on it. i had to go to another computer to get to the forum... If the solution is simple, i just don't know what it is.

• Ubuntu server 13 hangs on boot

  I formatted my WD30EFRX 3TB SATA HDD as GPT with the following layout: 200 MB FAT32 (BOOTABLE) 50GB EXT4 (Mount point: /) 4 GB SWAP SPACE ~2.9 TB EXT4 (with no mount point) Then i created a Flash USB using Rufus 1.3.3 and the following ISO-image: ubuntu-13.04-server-amd64.iso. I used following configuration to create the USB: GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer FAT32 (16KB) I successfully booted from this USB on my Intel D510MO motherboard in UEFI mode (there were a black and white boot loader menu instead of a colorful GUI) and installed the OS. During the boot loader installation i saw it was grub-efi-amd64 as it must be. After installation i removed the flash drive and tried to boot the system, but just after a BIOS POST it hangs (there is a white blinking cursor at the left top corner of the black screen) and nothing happens. UEFI Mode is enabled in the BIOS configuration and i've updated the BIOS to the latest firmware. What went wrong, how i can confirm that system was installed properly? How can i boot the OS?

• OSD desktop-clock that does not get in your way?

  Hello, is there a clock application, that can be placed on your screen like a widget staying always on top but automatically fades away on mouseover enabling you to click through it on items below, (behaves pretty much like the Ubuntu notifications in that sense). I am aware, that there are screenlets and gdesklets widget apps, but those are buggy, look outdated, and do not comply with the criteria listed above. What I have in mind is a clock that is large, (digital), always visible (on top of all other windows), and does not disrupt your work (e.g. you can still click that scroll bar or button if it is just below the clock, since the clock fades away on hovering). A tool called "OSD-Lyrics" that show lyrics for songs and behaves exactly the way I described above. So it should be possible (and even easier) to do the same with a clock. Thanks in advance, YSN

• JustCode Provides Reflector Alternative

  If you've been a loyal Reflector user, you've probably been exposed to the debacle surrounding RedGate's decision to no longer offer a free version.  Since then, the race has begun for a replacement with a provider that would stand by their promises to the community.  Mono has an ongoing free alternative, which has been available for a long time.  However, other vendors are stepping up to the plate, with their own offerings. If Not Reflector, Then What? One of these vendors is Telerik.  In their recent Q1 2011 release of JustCode, Telerik offers a decompilation utility rivaling what we've become accustomed to in Reflector.  Not only does Telerik offer a usable replacement, but they've (in my opinion), produced a product that integrates more naturally with visual Studio than any other product ever has.  Telerik's decompilation process is so easy that the accompanying demo in this post is blindingly short (except for the presence of verbose narrative). If you want to follow along with this demo, you'll need to have Telerik JustCode installed.  If you don't have JustCode yet, you can buy it or download a trial at the Telerik Web site . A Tall Tale; Prove It! With JustCode, you can view code in the .NET Framework or any other 3rd party library (that isn't well obfuscated).  This demo depends on LINQ to Twitter, which you can download from CodePlex.com and create a reference or install the package online as described in my previous post on NuGet.  Regardless of the method, you'll have a project with a reference to LINQ to Twitter.  Use a Console Project if you want to follow along with this demo. Note:  If you've created a Console project, remember to ensure that the Target Framework is set to .NET Framework 4.  The default is .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, which doesn't work with LINQ to Twitter.  You can check by double-clicking the Properties folder on the project and inspecting the Target Framework setting. Next, you'll need to add some code to your program that you want to inspect. Here, I add code to instantiate a TwitterContext, which is like a LINQ to SQL DataContext, but works with Twitter: var l2tCtx = new TwitterContext(); If you're following along add the code above to the Main method, which will look similar to this: using LinqToTwitter; namespace NuGetInstall { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var l2tCtx = new TwitterContext(); } } } The code above doesn't really do anything, but it does give something that I can show and demonstrate how JustCode decompilation works. Once the code is in place, click on TwitterContext and press the F12 (Go to Definition) key.  As expected, Visual Studio opens a metadata file with prototypes for the TwitterContext class.  Here's the result: Opening a metadata file is the normal way that Visual Studio works when navigating to the definition of a type where you don't have the code.  The scenario with TwitterContext happens because you don't have the source code to the file.  Visual Studio has always done this and you can experiment by selecting any .NET type, i.e. a string type, and observing that Visual Studio opens a metadata file for the .NET String type. The point I'm making here is that JustCode works the way Visual Studio works and you'll see how this can make your job easier. In the previous figure, you only saw prototypes associated with the code. i.e. Notice that the default constructor is empty.  Again, this is normal because Visual Studio doesn't have the ability to decompile code.  However, that's the purpose of this post; showing you how JustCode fills that gap. To decompile code, right click on TwitterContext in the metadata file and select JustCode Navigate -> Decompile from the context menu.  The shortcut keys are Ctrl+1.  After a brief pause, accompanied by a progress window, you'll see the metadata expand into full decompiled code. Notice below how the default constructor now has code as opposed to the empty member prototype in the original metadata: And Why is This So Different? Again, the big deal is that Telerik JustCode decompilation works in harmony with the way that Visual Studio works.  The navigate to functionality already exists and you can use that, along with a simple context menu option (or shortcut key) to transform prototypes into decompiled code. Telerik is filling the the Reflector/Red Gate gap by providing a supported alternative to decompiling code.  Many people, including myself, used Reflector to decompile code when we were stuck with buggy libraries or insufficient documentation.  Now we have an alternative that's officially supported by a company with an excellent track record for customer (developer) service, Telerik.  Not only that, JustCode has several other IDE productivity tools that make the deal even sweeter.   Hi, I'm having problems with the following while config. my Apache server to Rewrite some urls. SetEnv PATH_TO_DIR /directory RewriteRule ^%{PATH_TO_DIR}/([a-zA-Z0-9_\-]+)/([a-zA-Z0-9_\-\.]+)/?$ /index.php?dir=$1&file=$2 ErrorDocument 404 %{PATH_TO_DIR}/index.php?dir=null&file=error This conf. used to work perfectly fine until I used SetEnv PATH... etc. I need to use this because there are lots of rules, not just those. Can anyone point out my mistake? Apache returns %{PATH_TO_DIR}/index.php?dir=null&file=error when I try anything (www.site.com/foo/bar for instance). Apache returns the ErrorDocument if i just try to fetch the index. I know it's not a problem with the rewrite rules because they work when I remove the PATH_TO_DIR variable and just hard code it. • Ubuntu 12.10 AMD/Intel Hybrid Graphics not working

  On Ubuntu 12.04 my Sony Vaio VPCSE with Intel® HD Graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M worked fine with the Catalyst Control Center version 12.6. Also the switching between integrated and discrete graphic card was working. In both cases, I followed this tutorial. But it is not working on Ubuntu 12.10. I tested the tutorial with the Catalyst Control Center from the Ubuntu Software Center, the version 12.8 and version 12.9. Always the same problem: After installation process I am able to boot in the login-screen. But after entering the password for my username, only the background-image appears. Unity seems not to be starting. I am only able to reach the context-menu by right clicking the mouse button. I also tried his fix, but is also does not work for me. Any ideas what to do to fix this problem?

  I have a Linux VPS, DirectAdmin as web panel and already set a domain to it. everything is OK and I can see my website in my browser using domain name. Now I need to have access to my site using its IP address. something like http://86.57.88.29, but when I try to load my site in a browser using its IP I get below message and I have to post-fix my IP with /~admin (http://86.57.88.29/~admin) to get it work. This IP is being shared among many domains. To view the domain you are looking for, simply enter the domain name in the location bar of your web browser. So how can I configure my IP to point to my public_html folder without and ~admin like phrase? Thanks.

• How to hide bottom panel in GNOME?

  I want to hide bottom panel of Gnome in Ubuntu 10.10 so that I would be able to show it again when I want. In the property menu of the panel there is an option for Autohide but not hide totally. The reason I need it, is because I am using Docky panel and it now it is behind the bottom panel and looks like awful. What I am doing right now is I am deleting it totally by right clicking on the panel. And the only way I know to return it back is executing following command in the terminal. rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/panel Any other solutions?

• Bluetooth not really "turning on" on a Sony Vaio VPCEG

  On a Sony Vaio VPCEG, bluetooth is not working properly: The gnome-shell bluetooth indicator (at the main bar) shows the bluetooth is on, but when I try to switch visibility on it simply doesn't turn on. When I open the bluetooth configuration dialog, the on/off indicator shows me the bluetooth is off. And when I try to turn it on it simply does not turn on. • How to install an older version of Java

  I updated my installation of the sun-java6-jdk package today to version 6.24-1build0.10.10.1 after being prompted by the update manager. However this now causes some compilation failures so I'd like to revert back to the previous version that I had installed. I've tried using Synaptic but the 'Force Version' menu command is disabled. I've tried the following command to install the previous version sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk=6.22-0ubuntu1~10.10 But I'm not sure that I have the correct version: Reading package lists...   I have an ACER ASPIRE ONE AO756-Series, equipped with A wifi controller Atheros Communications Inc. AR9462 Everything worked fine on 12.04, but when I upgraded to 12.10 I experimented some issues : * wifi does work ! * still, the wifi icon/menu does not react normally : 1) it is always grey, hence not indicating if connected or not, 2) It does not react to me clicking on it (disconnect, change the network, desactive wifi, etc) So it's not a critical issue because I can change the active wifi connection through control pannel, but it is very annoying. Do you know of an solution around this issue ? thanks a lot antoine

• How can I selectively update XNA GameComponents?

  I have a small 2D game I'm working on in XNA. So far, I have a player-controlled ship that operates on vector thrust and is terribly fun to spin around in circles. I've implemented this as a DrawableGameComponent and registered it with the game using game.Components.Add(this) in the Ship object constructor. How can I implement features like pausing and a menu system with my current implementation? Is it possible to set certain GameComponents to not update? Is this something for which I should even be using a DrawableGameComponent? If not, what are more appropriate uses for this?

  Hello guys. I'm having a nasty problem with the Sound Menu on my Ubuntu 10.10 Installation. What happens is that the sound control icon is blocked, and i can't control the master volume. If i try to get to the Sound Preferences i get a little Pop-Up Window saying: "Waiting for Sound System to respond...". Don't know what to do... Apart of that, sound works great. • Interface is too empty

  I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 0n my PC without any third-party software (cause i havent been able to get my dial-up to work). When i open Ubuntu after reboot, there is absolutely nothing on the desktop screen except for an 'Untitled' folder at the corner of the screen. There is no menu, no taskbars at the top whatever. I dont know why this is happening. The .iso from which i have booted amd installed Ubuntu is fine. I have already conducted an md5sum test and it was all fine. Looking forward to your response.

• Asus Eee PC 701 4G hangs on boot

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Install Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

• Dealing with "I-am-cool-and-you-are-dumb" manager [closed]

  I have been working with a software company for about 6 months now. I like the projects I work on there and I really like all the people there except for 1 guy. That guy is technically smart, and he is a co-founder of the company. He is an okay guy in person (the kind you wouldn't want to care about much) but things get tricky when he is your manager. In general I am all okay but there are times when I feel I am not being treated fairly: He doesn't give much thought to when he makes mistakes and when I do something similar, he is super critical. Recently he went as far as to say "I am not sure if I can trust you with this feature". The detais of this specific case are this: I was working on this feature, and I was already a couple of hours over my normal working hours, and then I decided to stop and continue tomorrow. We use git, and I like to commit changes locally and only push when I feel they are ready. This manager insists that I push all the changes to the central repo (in case my hard drive crashes). So I push the change, and the ticket is marked as "to be tested". Next day I come in, he sits next to me and starts complaining and says that I posted above. I really didn't know what to say, I tried to explain to him that the ticket is still being worked upon but he didn't seem to listen. He interrupts me in-between when I am coding, which I do not mind, but when I do that same, his face turns like this :| and reacts as if his work was super important and I am just wasting his time. He asks me to accumulate all questions, and then ask him altogether which is not always possible, as you need a clarification before you can continue on a feature implementation. And when I am coding, he talks on the phone with his customers next to me (when he can go to the meeting room with his laptop) and doesn't care. He made me switch to a whole new IDE (from Netbeans to a commercial IDE costing a lot of money) for a really tiny feature (which I later found out was in Netbeans as well!). I didn't make a big deal out of it as I am equally comfortable working with this new IDE, but I couldn't get the science behind his obsession. He said this feature makes sure that if any method is updated by a programmer, the IDE will turn the method name to red in places where it is used. I told him that I do not have a problem since I always search for method usage in the project and make sure its updated. IDEs even have refactoring features for exactly that, but... I recently implemented a feature for a project, and I was happy about it and considering him a senior, I asked him his comments about the implementation quality.. he thought long and hard, made a few funny faces, and when he couldn't find anything, he said "ummm, your program will crash if JS is disabled" - he was wrong, since I had made sure it would work fine with default values even if JS was disabled. I told him that and then he said "oh okay". BUT, the funny thing is, a few days back, he implemented something and I objected with "But that would not run if JS is disabled" and his response was "We don't have to care about people who disable JS" :-/ Once he asked me to investigate if there was a way to modify a CMS generated menu programmatically by extending the CMS, I did my research and told him that the only was is to inject a menu item using JavaScript / jQuery and his reaction was "ah that's ugly, and hacky, not acceptable" and two days later, I see that feature implemented in the same way as I had suggested. The point is, his reaction was not respectful at all, even if what I proposed was hacky, he should be respectful, that I know what's hacky and if I am suggesting something hacky, there must be a reason for it. There are plenty of other reasons / examples where I feel I am not being treated fairly. I want your advice as to what is it that I am doing wrong and how to deal with such a situation. The other guys in the team are actually very good people, and I do not want to leave the job either (although I could, if I want to). All I want is respect and equal treatment. I have thought about talking to this guy in a face to face meeting, but that worries me that his attitude might get worse and make things more difficult for me (since he doesn't seem to be the guy who thinks he can be wrong too). I am also considering talking to the other co-founder but I am not sure how he will take it (as both founders have been friends forever). • Get Rhythmbox debugging info

  I'm having a weird problem with Rhythmbox that no one else seems to have. When I pause on any audio CD, I can't get Rhythmbox to play it again. I've tried various workarounds including trying to play next/previous track, trying to manually move the seek bar, etc. but to no avail. When this happens I've no choice but to remove the CD from my drive and insert it again. There does not seem to be anything weird with my system when this happens, apart from the fact that Rhythmbox isn't playing as it is supposed to. Is there anything I can do to get more info on why Rhythmbox is acting up as such?

• Where do I add boot parameters to use ks.cfg

  Hi, I created a kickstart file ks.cfg and then I have put that in the bootable disk*(Ubuntu 10.04)* and then added the following line to the isolinux.cfg linux ks=ks.cfg and have not removed any other lines from the isoconfig.cfg file and then while installing the installation is not automated, again it is asking for language and all. If i removed include menu.cfg or any other line from isolinux.cfg i am getting a boot error. What should i do now to automate the installation.Where should i add the boot parameters so that installation will start from the ks.cfg . Thanks and Regards Ravi Kumar
