• Should I use Perl or PHP or something else for this project?

  I'm about to embark on a project that will need to: Process XML Heavy text parsing of non-xml documents Insertion of data from xml and non-xml documents into a relational DB. Present processed data to user from db using webpages. The website will be subject to short periods of very heavy loads to pages (300+ visitors a minute for several minutes), but most of the time will be idle (a dozen or so visitors a minute). The ability to cache or scale to load will be very nice. I have a very strong background in Java and web services, but I do not want to use Java for this project as I'd like to diversify my skill set. Which language would you recommend and what are some pros and cons that you might recognize from your own experiences?

  I've just begun to explore the PTL and have a design question. My Scenario: I have a list of URLs that each refer to an image. I want each image to be downloaded in parallel. As soon as at least one image is downloaded, I want to execute a method that does something with the downloaded image. That method should NOT be parallelized -- it should be serial. I think the following will work but I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it. Because I have separate classes for collecting the images and for doing "something" with the collected images, I end up passing around an array of Tasks which seems wrong since it exposes the inner workings of how images are retrieved. But I don't know a way around it. In reality there is more to both of these methods but that's not important for this. Just know that they really shouldn't be lumped into one large method that both retrieves and does something with the image. • Handling OPTIONS request in nginx

  We're using HAProxy as a load balancer at the moment, and it regularly makes requests to the downstream boxes to make sure they're alive using an OPTIONS request: OPTIONS /index.html HTTP/1.0 I'm working with getting nginx set up as a reverse proxy with caching (using ncache). For some reason, nginx is returning a 405 when an OPTIONS request comes in: 192.168.1.10 - - [22/Oct/2008:16:36:21 -0700] "OPTIONS /index.html HTTP/1.0" 405 325 "-" "-" 192.168.1.10 When hitting the downstream webserver directly, I get a proper 200 response. My question is: how to you make nginx pass that response along to HAProxy, or, how can I set the response in the nginx.conf? Thanks!

  Here's a nice pitfall I just encountered. Consider a list of integers: List<Integer> list = new ArrayList<Integer>(); list.add(5); list.add(6); list.add(7); list.add(1); Any educated guess on what happens when you execute list.remove(1)? What about list.remove(new Integer(1))? This can cause some nasty bugs. What is the proper way to differentiate between remove(int index), which removes an element from given index and remove(Object o), which removes an element by reference, when dealing with lists of integers? The main point to consider here is the one @Nikita mentioned - exact parameter matching takes precedence over auto-boxing.

  Hi, I am coding up an implementation of Interpolation Search in C. The question is actually rather simple, I need to use the floating operations to do linear interpolation to find the correct index which will eventually be an integer result. In particular my probe index is: t = i + floor((((k-low)/(high-low)) * (j-i))); where, i,j,k,t are unsigned ints, and high,low are doubles. Would this be equivalent to: t = i + (unsigned int)(((k-low)/(high-low)) * (j-i)); Is there any reason I would actually want to use math.h floor* functions over just a simple (int) typecast?

• Unsigned versus signed numbers as indexes

  Whats the rationale for using signed numbers as indexes in .Net? In Python, you can index from the end of an array by sending negative numbers, but this is not the case in .Net. It's not easy for .Net to add such a feature later as it could break other code perhaps using special rules (yeah, a bad idea, but I guess it happens) on indexing. Not that I have ever have needed to index arrays over 2,147,483,647 in size, but I really cannot understand why they choose signed numbers. Can it be because it's more normal to use signed numbers in code?

  I'm having the following problem: I'm using Oracle ADF for the view and controller of my app. With OpenSessionInViewFilter, I intercept the request and open an Hibernate's Session, and it is closed as soon as the bean's method finishes. What I need is to keep the Session opened until the page is rendered, because in my JSP y use the lazy attributes of the object i load from the DB. Is there a simpler way of creating an index with the required structure (ViewA) given a collection of documents (DocA)? FURTHER INFORMATION The issue appears to be that in order to have the index hold the data in the transformed structure (ViewA), we have to do a Reduce. It appears that a Reduce must have both a GROUP ON and a SELECT in order to work as expected so the following are not valid: INVALID REDUCE CLAUSE 1: Reduce = results => from result in results group on new ViewA { Id = result.Id, Name = result.Name, CurrencyName = result.CurrencyName } into g select g.Key; This produces: System.InvalidOperationException: Variable initializer select must have a lambda expression with an object create expression Clearly we need to have the 'select new'. INVALID REDUCE CLAUSE 2: Reduce = results => from result in results select new ViewA { Id = result.Id, Name = result.Name, CurrencyName = result.CurrencyName }; This prduces: System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'ICSharpCode.NRefactory.Ast.IdentifierExpression' to type 'ICSharpCode.NRefactory.Ast.InvocationExpression'. Clearly, we also need to have the 'group on new'. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. (Note: removing the type (ViewA) from the constructor calls has no effect on the above)

• NSStrings, C strings, pathnames and encodings in iPhone

  I am using libxml2 in my iPhone app. I have an NSString that holds the pathname to an XML file. The pathname may include non-ASCII characters. I want to get a C string representation of the NSString for to pass to xmlReadFile(). It appears that cStringUsingEncoding gives me the representation I seek. I am not clear on which encoding to use. I wonder if there is a "default" encoding in iPhone OS that I can use here and ensure that I can roundtrip non-ASCII pathnames.

  I have two lists in python and I want to know if they intersect at the same index. Is there a mathematical way of solving this? For example if I have [9,8,7,6,5] and [3,4,5,6,7] I'd like a simple and efficient formula/algorithm that finds that at index 3 they intersect. I know I could do a search just wondering if there is a better way. I know there is a formula to solve two lines in y = mx + b form by subtracting them from each other but my "line" isn't truly a line because its limited to the items in the list and it may have curves. Any help is appreciated.

  i’m trying to create a url string that works like this: /app/process/example.com/index.html so in other words, /app/process/$URL i then retrieve the url with $this->uri->segment(3); the forward slashes in the URL will of course be a problem accessing uri segments, so i’ll go ahead and url encode the URL portion: /app/process/example.com%2Findex.html .. but now I just get a 404 saying ... Not Found The requested URL /app/process/example.com/index.html was not found on this server. it appears that my url encoding of forward slashes breaks CI’s URI parser. what can i do to get around this problem?

  I have come across a strange problem in one of our applications on win2k8/Vista x64 with UAC enabled. It is a process which hosts the UI for our service and runs in the context of the logged on user. When logged in as a domain user who is a member of the "Administrators" group, writing to the registry under HKLM fails due to UAC with access denied. But when logged in as the local "Administrator" account (non-domain) then writing to the registry succeeds. Both accounts are adminstrators - is there a distinction between domain and non-domain accounts with UAC? What gives?

  My background is only a 6 month college class in basic C/C++, and I'm trying to convert to Python. I may be talking nonsense, but it seems to me C, at least at my level, is very for-loop intensive. I solve most problems with these loops. And it seems to me the biggest mistake people do when going from C to Python is trying to implement C logic using Python, which makes things run slowly, and it's just not making the most of the language. I see on this website: http://hyperpolyglot.org/scripting (serach for "c-style for", that Python doesn't have C-style for loops. Might be outdated, but I interpret it to mean Python has its own methods for this. I've tried looking around, I can't find much up to date (Python 3) advice for this. How can I solve a palindrome challenge in Python, without using the for loop? I've done this in C in class, but I want to do it in Python, on a personal basis. I'm not a programmer, I don't aspire to be one, I just want to learn enough so that when I write my bachelor's degree thesis (electrical engineering), I don't have to simultaneously LEARN an applicable programming language while trying to obtain good results in the project. "How to go from basic C to great application of Python", that sort of thing. 4) Any specific bits of code to make a great solution to this problem would also be appreciated, I need to learn good algorithms.. I am envisioning 3 situations. If the value is zero or single digit, if it is of odd length, and if it is of even length. I was planning to write for loops... PS: The problem is: Find the highest value product of two 3 digit integers that is also a palindrome.

• Django and mod_python intermittent error?

  I have a Django site at http://sm.rutgers.edu/relive/af_api/index/. It is supposed to display "Home of the relive APIs". If you refresh this page many times, you can see different renderings. 1) The expected page. 2) Django "It worked!" page. 3) "ImportError at /index/" page. If you scroll down enough to ROOT_URLCONF part, you will see it says 'relive.urls'. But apparently, it should be 'af_api.urls', which is in my settings.py file. Since these results happen randomly, is it possible that either Django or mod_python is working unstably?

• NSFetchedResultsController not processing certain section driven moves

  I utilize a NSFetchedResultsController (frc) with a Core Data store. I implement all the frc delegate methods. The table is sporadically updated by background threads. All the inserts, deletes and updates work fine, with the exception that updates to the frc's index key for rows toward to the bottom of the table (50 rows), do not result in a section move. e.g. if "name" is the index key and the name "Victor" is changed to "Alex", the victor row now shows the name Alex, but is not moved to the top of the table alongside all other names starting with A. As I noted, this is only for rows towards the bottom of the table. If a row like "Andy" is changed to "Ben", the move is indeed processed correctly by the frc. Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated. I do not use a frc cache. Thanks

  hello guys, just simple question, recently i have setup a web server to build project using zend framework, after setup and see those welcome page saying that you are creating websites powered by zendframework, then i try issuing command, $ zf create controller alert i get the message that saying that i've successfully create controller, view and so on, but when i try to navigate to the page by URL, ex: www.mywebapp.com/alert the page is broken, i've check those tuts but none of them showing this case. can some one define which step i've skip? update: (25/5/2010) so i've found that there is no problem, is just that i've not configured properly my route to my web apps, so i have to type URL like this: www.mywebapp.com/index.php/alert how am I going to change this? i mean i want to explode "index.php" out of URL.
