• Why does my system slow down or freeze when there is heavy disk activity?

  Im a first-time user to Ubuntu-12.04 with WUBI installation. My NoteBook Information : Dell vostro 3450 : i5 2410m, 3 gb ram, intel hd3000, amd 6630m hybrid. Surfing and playing games works flawlessly, however, I'm having huge problems when installing applications and generally copying and moving files. When doing so, system is significantly slower and freezes quite often (Firefox gets bluish, sometimes even black n white). I would say that Ubuntu allocates too much resources on file transfers and installing, but even these tasks are very slow. Here is very specific example : today, i tried to move 6 GB file from win 7 installation. It was good at first, i jumped to firefox but after a while firefox started to randomly turn bluish and mouse was randomly stopping working. It was gradually worse and worse and it got to a point when firefox black n whited and mouse wasn't working at all. I raged and went for some meal, when i got back screen was black. It probably unlogged me due to inactivity, when i pushed random button to bring screen to life i had to wait few minutes to let it show me only my screen background. No log in screen, just background and working mouse. NoteBook fan was working at 100 % so I assumed that file transfer was going on and I left it to work. Nothing then changed for a full hour so I hard rebooted it. File transfer unsuccessful, It transfered hardly 2 gigs. Is this normal ? What to do in these situations ? It didn't let me load system manager and not even terminal. Thanks.

• How to dual boot Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows XP sp3 on Dell Dimension 8250 desktop using 2 hard drives

  I'd like instructions to dual boot Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows XP (sp3) on my desktop Dell Dimension 8250 (this is old and has 1.5 GB RAM which is maximum). I will be using 2 hard drives. Windows XP is already on a 120 GB drive and and Ubuntu 12.10 will go on a separate 80 GB hard drive. Both drives are IDE using a 80 conductor cable where the 40 pin blue connector connects to the motherboard. The middle connector is gray and is "normally" used for slave (device 1) and the black connector at the very end of the cable is meant for the master drive (device 0) or a single drive if only one is used. First, I do not wish the XP drive to have its boot modified by Ubuntu in any way. It should remain untouched...virgin. Let me know where the XP drive and the Ubuntu drive should be connected based upon the cable I've mentioned above, as well as jumper settings for both during the whole process. I'm just guessing, but should I remove the XP drive and put the empty Ubuntu drive in its place and install Ubuntu? By the way, I already have made the DVD ISO disk. For your information, the BIOS for this machine is version A03. When I tap F12 to get to the boot menu, I have the following choices: Normal (this will take me to a black screen with white type giving me the choice to boot to XP or to my external USB backup recovery drive) Diskette Drive Hard-Disk Drive c: IDE CD-ROM Drive (Note that if the CD Drive is empty, it will then go to the DVD drive) System Setup IDE Drive Diagnostics Boot to Utility Partition (This is Dell's various testing utilities) Thank you in advance for your help. • cookie not being sent when requesting JS

  I host a webservice, and provide my members with a Javascript bookmarklet, which loads a JS sript from my server. However, clients must be logged in, in order to receive the JS script. This works for almost everybody. However, some users on setups (i.e. browser/OS) that are known to work for other people have the following problem: when they request the script via the javascript bookmarklet from my server, their cookie from my server does not get included with the request, and as such they are always "not authenticated". I'm making the request in the following way: var myScript = eltCreate('script'); myScript.setAttribute('src','http://myserver.com/script'); document.body.appendChild(myScript); In a fit of confused desperation, I changed the script page to simply output "My cookie has [x] elements" where [x] is count($_COOKIE). If this extremely small subset of users requests the script via the normal method, the message reads "My cookie has 0 elements". When they access the URL directly in their browser, the message reads "My cookie has 7 elements". What on earth could be going on?!

• My proposed design is usually worse than my colleague's - how do I get better?

  I have been programming for couple of years and am generally good when it comes to fixing problems and creating small-to-medium scripts, however, I'm generally not good at designing large scale programs in object oriented way. Few questions Recently, a colleague who has same number of years of experience as me and I were working on a problem. I was working on a problem longer than him, however, he came up with a better solution and in the end we're going to use his design. This really affected me. I admit his design is better, but I wanted to come up with a design as good as his. I'm even contemplating quitting the job. Not sure why but suddenly I feel under some pressure e.g. what would juniors think of me and etc? Is it normal? Or I'm thinking a little too much into this? My job involves programming in Python. I try to read source code but how do you think I can improve me design skills? Are there any good books or software that I should study? Please enlighten me. I will really appreciate your help.

• What are the signs that a ten days debugging session will not resolve an issue? [on hold]

  Ten days ago, we fixed a bug on a large application and the hot fix has created a disappearing of some data from the user point of view (side effect). Data are not deleted, but have been set to hidden status. It could be possible to get the data back, but the thing seems to be hard: we've already spent 10 days to understand and reproduce the problem (mostly with SQL queries but sometimes it is necessary to update the database to test the application logic). My questions are : is 10 days a normal amount of time for these kind of problems? should we keep on and retrieve the data or should we give up this work (so the customer-relationship person will tell these users sorry for the loss, but your data have disappeared or maybe tell nothing at all)? what can be the signs that shows that we should stop to search for how to solve this issue? Edit about the context : we are a small team(3), users are not the customers, and lost data are not about the users money, bank or vital data. This is a question from a confused developer about development methodologies and business concerns, not about how we should deal with the customers.

• Building MySQL with boost on windows

  As you've probably heard already MySQL needs boost to build. However, in the good ol' MySQL tradition, the above link does give you only the instructions on how to build it on linux. And completely ignores the fact that there're other OSes too that people develop on. To fill in that gap, I've compiled a small step by step guide on how to do it on windows. Note that I always, as a principle, build out-of-source. The typical setup I have is : bzr clone lp:~mysql/mysql-server/5.7 mysql-trunkcd mysql-trunkmkdir bldcd bldcmake -DWITH_DEBUG=1 -DMYSQL_PROJECT_NAME=mysql-trunk ..devenv /build debug mysql-trunk.sln This has been tested to work on a 32 bit compile using VS2013 on a Windows7 64 bit build. Note that you'll need other things too (bison, eventually openssl etc) that I will assume you already have set up. Steps: Download Boost 1.55.0. It's the *only* version that is known to work currently. Extract boost_1_55_0/ from the zip to c:\boost\boost_1_55_0 Go to Control Panel/System/Environment variables and set WITH_BOOST=C:\boost\boost_1_55_0 in User variables. Make sure you restart your open command line terminal windows after this !  If you're upgrading from non-boost build, remove your bld/ directory and create a new one. run cmake as you'd typically do. You should get: -- Local boost dir C:/boost/boost_1_55_0 -- Local boost zip LOCAL_BOOST_ZIP-NOTFOUND -- BOOST_VERSION_NUMBER is #define BOOST_VERSION 105500 -- BOOST_INCLUDE_DIR C:/boost/boost_1_55_0 Build as normal (devenv /build debug ...). It should work.

• How to repair ubuntu or restore my windows 7 installation? Nothing helps

  i had windows 7 installed and I installed ubuntu alongside it. Booted ubuntu and explore it for a while. Turned pc off and went to bed. Next morning wanted to boot into windows but no luck... MBR error... Tried to repair windows using installation disk but it doesn't recognize win installation. Tried console bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot but still same. So I went back to ubuntu and tried with boot-repair, but got a write error. Restarted pc and now I cannot boot to either ubuntu or windows... Tried to recover NTFS partition with hiren's boot but it cannot find partition. Tried every solution there is on the web but no help... Is there any way to fix it because windows installation is very important to me?! btw, i noticed that grub indicates windows 7 to a sdb2 partition that doesn't exists... And when I RUN ubuntu from CD and browse disk, I dont see any files from windows 7. Is that normal or? http://paste.ubuntu.com/6338340/ PLEASE HELP...

• Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal and AMD 12.11 Beta Driver

  I'm using a Quantal AMDx64 install and a XFX Radeon HD5850 video card. I first enabled restricted drivers through additional drivers, but it resulted in breaking Unity and Compiz (I can only see my wallpaper and shortcuts. But the terminal still works and Nautilus too, however, without Close/Maximize/Minimize and slower). Then I uninstalled it and everything went back to normal. Then I installed it via terminal (12.10 version), and the result was the same. Then I downloaded it via ATI's web site (12.11 beta) and installed the .run file using the terminal, but the result was yet again the same. Then I went to the terminal and entered these commands: sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* - It said it had nothing to uninstall sudo rm /ect/x11/xorg.conf - No such directory sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg sudo startx sudo cp/ect/x11/xorg.conf.orig /ect/x11/xorg.conf - Also, no such directory sudo aticonfig --initial sudo reboot Then, I was presented with the log in screen, but when I tried to login (with my account), it flashed a black screen and then threw me back. Guest account still works (without unity and compiz, tough) and I can still use TTY. And I also got the "AMD Testing Only" watermark. Then I figured that I should stop messing with the terminal and get help before I unleashed Apocalypse XD. Side notes: My Ubuntu is installed on a ext4 partition with 60GB, and I dual boot with Windows 7 (at least for now). My internet is a 50kbps 3G-ish, so downloading even small files is a pain, let alone a video driver. I would rather not reinstall the O.S., it was a herculean task to download everything I had in there, and I have very little free disk space for backups. I'm still new to Ubuntu (I know some basic commands), and I don't know how to debug, so please, be patient XD And using Windows, my internet is even slower (is that possible?), so it kind of leaves a torture aftertaste xD. So, if you guys could answer quickly, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. If you need any info, just ask (and explain how to get it XD).

• Recommended design pattern for object with optional and modifiable attributtes? [on hold]

  I've been using the Builder pattern to create objects with a large number of attributes, where most of them are optional. But up until now, I've defined them as final, as recommended by Joshua Block and other authors, and haven't needed to change their values. I am wondering what should I do though if I need a class with a substantial number of optional but non-final (mutable) attributes? My Builder pattern code looks like this: public class Example { //All possible parameters (optional or not) private final int param1; private final int param2; //Builder class public static class Builder { private final int param1; //Required parameters private int param2 = 0; //Optional parameters - initialized to default //Builder constructor public Builder (int param1) { this.param1 = param1; } //Setter-like methods for optional parameters public Builder param2(int value) { param2 = value; return this; } //build() method public Example build() { return new Example(this); } } //Private constructor private Example(Builder builder) { param1 = builder.param1; param2 = builder.param2; } } Can I just remove the final keyword from the declaration to be able to access the attributes externally (through normal setters, for example)? Or is there a creational pattern that allows optional but non-final attributes that would be better suited in this case?

• Repurposing CSS Class Selectors

  I don't know what this technique is called, I've only seen it used. It's a way to repurpose the same selectors with CSS. For example if I create h1 { font-size:18px; color:#FFFFFF; font-family:Arial, Helvetica;margin:0; padding:0; } h2 { font-size:18px; color:#000000; font-family:Arial, Helvetica; font-weight:normal;margin:0; padding:0; } I can repurpose the h selectors with something like .whatever h1 { color: #000; font: 2.0em arial, sans-serif; background-color: #fff3ea; margin: 50px 0px 0px 50px; } .whatever h2 { color: #000; font: 1.7em bold arial, sans-serif; background-color: #fff3ea; margin: 25px 0px 25px 75px; } If h1 and h2 appear inside of a div called whatever, then they will assume those properties. You can do this with ID tags and class tags but I can't for the life of me remember how this is done. Any thoughts?

• Updating to linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic occupies all disk space

  I just ran a normal update through the update manager that wanted to update me to linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic. The installation paused halfway with a message that the root was full. I checked the disk usage, and noticed that one of the newly installed files: /lib/modules/3.2.0-26-generic/modules.ccwmap took up 63GB(!). Compared to the previous version: /lib/modules/3.2.0-24-generic/modules.ccwmap that took up only 4KB it seems like something went awfully wrong! As mentioned the update was paused when i ran out of disk space. There is no option in the update dialog to cancel or perform rollback on the update. Is it asking for trouble to kill the update manager? Any ideas as to what went wrong, and what I can do to remedy it? It's only minimal how much space I can free on that partition (without deleting the above mentioned file). If it is any help, the update was paused after this: Examining /etc/kernel/postinst.d. run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.2.0-26-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-26-generic

• Delete Ubuntu and Grub from PC (and BIOS unaccessible)

  I've really done a mess while upgrading 12.04 to 12.10, or my PC did, or ubuntu did, I can't really tell. The situation now is I have a dual booting machine, Windows 7 and ubuntu 12.10 -When turning on the PC, I can't access boot options, I've tried every thing, esc, f1 f8, f10 (I have a Hp pavilion) but all I can see is a short-lasting screen with three lines reading something like "error:files not found" or "link not found". So the PC turns to the Grub loader screen. This is already a BIG problem. It means I can't change boot order, and I'm diperate, since it doensn't seem that repairing my operating systems will bring my BIOS back. -If I chose Ubuntu in grup, it loades but then frezes on the desktop, I may be having problem with unity3d, or compiz, which was reported to be crashing the first times I started ubuntu. Now, after turning off and on the pc several times, no crash is reported again. Ubuntu just load my background image and nothing else. Not the side menu, not the header, nothing. Althogh the system seems "functioning", when I press the power button on the PC, for example, the normal shutdown dialog window appears. -If I chose Windows, Grubs tells me that something is not found, and to press any key to continue; I do it and then Windows loads perfectly. What I now want to do is 1- use EasyBSD to change boot order and boot Windows partition first 2- delete the ubuntu partitions from within windows disk manager What I except happening is that My PC turns to, or near to factory booting settings: I press the power button and Windows loads without asking me nothing I have acess to all my hardisk from withing windows Is that what will really happen? Are there danger I'm not seeing? What I don't except happening is The BIOS access key return functioning How could I eventually solve this? I would like to reinstall Ubuntu, 32 bit version this time.

• Growing your VirtualBox Virtual Disk

  Don't you just hate it when this happens: Fortunately, if you're running inside VirtualBox, you can resize your virtual disk and magically make your guest have a bigger disk very easily. There are 2 steps to doing this... 1. Resize the virtual disk Use the VBoxManage command line tool to extend the size of the Virtual Disk, specifying the path to the disk and the size in MB: VBoxManage modifyhd <uuid>|<filename> [--type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable| readonly|multiattach] [--autoreset on|off] [--compact] [--resize <megabytes>|--resizebyte <bytes>]   If you booted up your guest at this point, the extra space is seen as an unformatted area on the disk, like this: So we now need to tell the guest about the extra space available. 2. Extend the guest's partition to use the extra space How you do this step depends on you guest OS type and the tools you have available. Linux guests often include the excellent gparted partition editor, whereas Windows 7 and 8 provide the Computer Management tool which can resize partitions. Unfortunately, my Windows XP vm has no such tool. But I do have a couple of other options: Most Linux installable .isos include the aforementioned gparted tool, so I could simply attach, say, an Ubuntu.iso as a Virtual CD/DVD in my Windows XP vm and boot off that. Then use gparted to extend the Windows XP partition, before finally rebooting. But I took another route and attached my resized virtual disk to a Windows Server 2012 vm I had lying around. Then I used the Computer Management tool in Windows Server 2012 to extend the partition of the Windows XP disk, before shutting down, unplugging the disk and reattaching to my Windows XP vm. (Note that if your vm's use different disk controllers, Windows will check the disks on booting). When I finally boot up my Windows XP guest I see the available disk space and all is well. • Working hours for a newbie

  This is not a very related software / hardware question, but it's too related to the Tech world. I started a work 3 months before, and I am about to finish this week, and my boss asked me to do a planning of what I've done so far, I think this is totally ok, but he is asking for what I did each day with the hours I spent in these days. This is a sample of what I sent him M T W T F week 29/06 to 03/07 compréhension et analyse du problématique * * architecture de l'application * * * which translates to first task, I spent Monday + Tuesday on, and the last W, T, and Friday. What he is asking for, is what I've done in each day, with the timing I spent on (obviously, I don't think I remember, and because for a programmer, there are no sequence tasks, I mean I change code in a class, then change it in another to fit with the new one and so far) So my question is: is what he asking normal? and if so how can I detail the planning for the 3 months. [update] I used the email account we use to test our software with the extern servers, and I got a good view of what I was doing in every day :), a generic view but it helped too much (PS: The boss doesn't know anything about programming, for him, it's like writing lines and get results back nothing more )

• What is a suitable way to correct this program? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to deal with huge changes to a data specification? As described in this question, I need to modified a 4800 line c program to fulfill the new functional specification. However I have no idea of HOW to do it. Background: There is a updated version of a header file which the program depends on. I've speculated the changes and found that at least 30 critical changes are present. With the new header file, the c program cannot even compile. The error is too much that the compile said "too much error" and don't list every one. Unlike normal modification which can be easily test, this has no way to test without overcoming the 30 critical changes. For example, there would be no point to run the modified program with the old header file. On the other hand, with the new header file, the program can't run until I've covered every one of the 30 critical changes scattered in the new header file so that I can't even verify the correctness of each modification until there is no more compilation error. Do you have any idea to deal with this situation?

• Best Method to SFTP or FTPS Files via SSIS

  What is the best method using SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) to upload a file to either a remote SFTP (secure FTP with SSH2 protocal) or FTPS (FTP over SSL) site? I've used the following methods, but each has short-comings I would like to avoid: COZYROC LIBRARY Method: Install the CozyRoc library on each development and production server and use the SFTP task to upload the files. Pros: Easy to use. It looks, smells, and feels like a normal SSIS task. SSIS also recognizes the password as sensitive information and allows you all the normal options for protecting the sensitive information instead of just storing it in clear text in a non-secure manner. Works well with other SSIS tasks such as ForEach Loop Containers. Errors out when uploads and downloads fail. Works well when you don't know the names of the files on the remote FTP site to download or when you won't know the name of the file to upload until run-time. Cons: Costs money to license in a production environment. Makes you dependent upon the vendor to update their libraries between each version. Although they already have a 2008 version, this caused me a problem during the CTP's of 2008. Requires installing the libraries on each development and production machine. COMMAND LINE SFTP PROGRAM Method: Install a free command-line SFTP application such as Putty and execute it either by running a batch file or operating system process task. Pros: Free, free, and free. You can be sure it is secure if you are using Putty since numerous GUI FTP clients appear to use Putty under the covers. You DEFINATELY know you are using SSH2 and not SSH. Cons: The two command-line utilities I tried (Putty and Cygwin) required storing the SFTP password in a non-secure location. I haven't found a good way to capture failures or errors when uploading files. The process doesn't look and smell like SSIS. Most of the code is encapsulated in text files instead of SSIS itself. Difficult to use if you don't know the exact name of the file you are uploading or downloading. A 3RD PARTY C# or VB.NET LIBRARY Method: Install a SFTP or FTPS library and use a Script Task that references the library to upload the files. (I've never tried this, so I'm going to guess at the pros and cons) Pros: Probably easy to capture errors. Should work well with variables, so it would probably be easy to use even when you don't know the exact name of the file you are uploading or downloading. Cons: It's a script task combined with .NET libraries. If you are using SSIS, then you probably are more comfortable with SSIS tasks then .NET code. Script tasks are also difficult to troubleshoot since they don't have the same debugging tools and features as regular .NET projects. Creates a dependency on 3rd party code that may not work between different versions of SQL Server. To be fair, it is probably MORE likely to work between different versions of SQL Server than a 3rd party SSIS task library. Another huge con -- I haven't found a free C# or VB.NET library that does this as of yet. So if anyone knows of one, then please let me know!

  How do I install SciPy on my system? Update 1: for the NumPy part (that SciPy depends on) there is actually an installer for 64 bit Windows: numpy-1.3.0.win-amd64-py2.6.msi (is direct download URL, 2310144 bytes). Running the SciPy superpack installer results in this message in a dialog box: "Cannot install. Python version 2.6 required, which was not found in the registry." I already have Python 2.6.2 installed (and a working Django installation in it), but I don't know about any Registry story. Update: there is actually an installer for NumPy that works - see beginning of the question. Step 2 Tried to install NumPy in another way. Downloaded the zip package numpy-1.3.0rc2.zip (direct download URL, 2404011 bytes), extracted the zip file in a normal way to a temporary directory, D:\temp7\numpy-1.3.0rc2 (where setup.py and README.txt is). I then opened a command line window and: d: cd D:\temp7\numpy-1.3.0rc2 setup.py install This ran for a long time and also included use of cl.exe (part of Visual Studio). Here is a nearly 5000 lines long transcript (230 KB). This seemed to work. I can now do this in Python: import numpy as np np.random.random(10) with this result: array([ 0.35667511, 0.56099423, 0.38423629, 0.09733172, 0.81560421, 0.18813222, 0.10566666, 0.84968066, 0.79472597, 0.30997724]) Step 3 Downloaded the SciPy superpack installer, scipy-0.7.1rc3- win32-superpack-python2.6.exe (direct download URL, 45597175 bytes). Running this installer resulted in the message listed in the beginning Step 4 Tried to install SciPy in another way. Downloaded the zip package scipy-0.7.1rc3.zip (direct download URL, 5506562 bytes), extracted the zip file in a normal way to a temporary directory, D:\temp7\scipy-0.7.1 (where setup.py and README.txt is). I then opened a command line window and: d: cd D:\temp7\scipy-0.7.1 setup.py install This did not achieve much - here is a transcript (about 95 lines). • wpf window refresh works at first, then stops

  I've got a routine that grabs a list of all images in a directory, then runs an MD5 digest on all of them. Since this takes a while to do, I pop up a window with a progress bar. The progress bar is updated by a lambda that I pass in to the long-running routine. The first problem was that the progress window was never updated (which is normal in WPF I guess). Since WPF lacks a Refresh() command I fixed this with a call to Dispatcher.Invoke(). Now the progress bar is updated for a while, then the window stops being updated. The long-running work does eventually finish and the windows go back to normal. I have already tried a BackgroundWorker and quickly became frustrated by a threading issue related to an event triggered by the long-running process. So if that's really the best solution and I just need to learn the paradigm better, please say so. But I'd be really much happier with the approach I've got here, except that it stops updating after a bit (for example, in a folder with 1000 files, it might update for 50-100 files, then "hang"). The UI does not need to be responsive during this activity, except to report on progress. Anyway, here's the code.
