• How to fix Truecrypt MBR using Command Prompt or Linux live USB?

  I was playing with TrueCrypt and decided to make a fresh installation of Windows 7 from USB stick. Unfortunately Windows 7 installer: "setup was unable to create a new system partition" My entire HDD has been formatted and is visible as 320GB unallocated space, but no fdisk nor Windows 7 installer nor Windows XP installer could help. (Windows XP doesn't even see the HDD, it sees only USB stick and says "not enough space to install") It may be related to Truecrypt and pre-boot authentification, boot loader and/or MBR. As I don't have optical device I could not have created rescue disk. Right now I need a rescue of some kind, supposingly by erasing/fixing MBR using Linux live USB or using Command Promt. Another approach is to click "repair your comuter" menu from Windows 7 installer then click "restore your computer", then click OK upon error and get access to Command Prompt. Yet another another approach is to start computer without Linux USB I receive this: error:unknown filesystem. grub rescue> Any help would be greatly appreciated as my laptop is kind of not fully operational now. UPDATE: This was asked long time ago, ended up formatting everything (eventually it worked using different bootable USB)...

• Is it possible to trace someone using Google during an online exam?

  I happen to be a professor at a reputed college. I want to design an online exam for over 1000 students via around 50 computers right after the vacation ends. Now the problem is that I have heard that many students use Google on a different tab to find answers when no invigilator is around. I want to know if there is a way to backtrace it after the exams via some kind of history or any other possible way. In our university there is a standard system. I am not good with computers but I will try to explain. Each computer uses mozilla to connect to a server centrally located via an IP. The students open it and enter a unique ID and password to start the exams. Many questions are jumbled and different groups of students give exam in a different time slot. Is there any way to trace it since I want to set an example for students so they won't cheat and give exams in an honest way. Additional details: Since the number of computers are less than the number of students, more than 10 students are going to use a single computer on a single day over a period of 10 hours. After this, if I check the history (and let's say someone even forgot to delete the history and I see it), will I able to figure out who among the 10 has done it? Moreover, is it even practical and feasible?

• Network card shuts down when stressed

  I have a network card that functions fine with light use, but quits functioning after heavy use. I replaced it with a brand new one and still have the same issue, also updated drivers. It is a wired D-Link card. The Internet seems fine for a small amount of web browsing but when I run a bandwidth test it starts out fast and slows quickly until the card completely quits; I have a constant ping of the gateway going while I run this and it starts timing out after a couple seconds into the speed test. The card will stay on and the data light on it still flashes some but I cannot ping the gateway or anything else until the computer is rebooted. When I boot into safe mode I can browse and run the speed test fine with no problems. I am guessing that this is probably some program that is loading in regular mode but not safe mode that is causing the issue? I have very limited software (turned off av and firewall) on the computer but I am thinking that I'll just have to start eliminating start-up programs and see if that helps. This is on Windows 7 if that makes any difference. Anyone had a similar issue or have any other suggestions/ideas for narrowing down this problem?

• Multi-partition USB stick

  In my freelance job as "the dude that fixes your computer" I have an extremely handy tool, a bootable USB stick with Ubuntu LiveCD that allows me to recover and investigate in a known, working environment. Now, I want to reformat this USB stick and reinstall with Casper-RW persistance. I did this a few times before with a FAT-formatted USB stick. It was a horror. The USB drive corrupted constantly, by people accidently removing the USB stick, the computer not properly shutting down, ETC. Now what I want to create a multi-partition USB stick so I can put Ubuntu on a ext partition, but still be able to store some Windows stuff in it, by having a secondary FAT partition. However I read somewhere that Windows will only check the first partition on USB sticks, giving a problem with the first bootable linux partition. Is this possible on some way? EDIT Perhaps it wasn't clear what the problem is. The problem is that I read somewhere that Windows will only recognize the first partition on a USB stick. But I want two partitions, a ext partition and a FAT partition. No issues so far, but in order to be bootable the ext partition must be the first one!

• Eclipse CDT wont recognize standard library

  I work primarily on my desktop, but I started working on my mac laptop and noticed a problem with eclipse CDT. The standard library was underlined yellow and cout wouldn't work (It wouldn't recognize/find it). I tried restarting the program and that didn't work. I then tried to see if xcode would work, found that the version of xcode was too old, and updated xcode. Eclipse still didn't work, but xcode did. I tried re-installing eclipse to the new version and re-installing cdt. It still wouldn't work. Restarting my computer wont work either. I'm not sure if this helps (or even matters/applies) but when I type g++ --version into terminal, it doesn't work. (I don't know if that matters but some tutorial told me to do that to check if the compiler was working). So, in review, I have: Re-installed eclipse Restarted my computer Re-installed xcode (which I think has all the compilers eclipse uses.) Updated Eclipse Typed g++ --version to test compiler.

• Export files to remote server using TortoiseSVN

  I'm using TortoiseSVN to keep revisions of my code. When I commit changes, I take note of what files have changed and upload them to my server using FTP. Here's my workflow: Edit files on local computer (eg. files in C:\Users\Me\web) Commit changes to local repository using rightclick- TortoiseSVN- SVN Commit. Take the files, open FileZilla (FTP client) and upload the files to a remote server. I was wondering if there was a way in which I could omit step 3 from my workflow. Basically I would like the changed files to be automatically uploaded to the remote server when I commit a version to the repository. Information about my computer environment: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with TortoiseSVN x64 Notepad++ text editor Files edited are PHP, CSS, JS, HTML, etc. Server is running Linux with PHP 5.2 and MySQL. FileZilla is used to upload files. I can connect to the server via SSH if that is needed. Thank you in advance.

• Strange boot problems on 6 month old setup

  I've already exhausted my knowledge on this one, so forgive me if this post is a bit long. I built a computer 6 months ago for my wife and it worked fine until last week. Then it randomly shut down and would lock up while trying to boot on the boot screen. I cleared cmos and it allowed me to do startup recovery, but it "failed to fix the issue" so I reinstalled windows on the HD (moving the old install to windows_old). It worked, so I started installing drivers again, but then when I restarted to finalize installations it locked up again. This time, I took the hard drive and hooked it up to my computer, backed up all her files, and then formatted the hard drive before reinstalling it. (again had to clear cmos to let me boot from disk) It installed windows, I installed drivers, and it worked for a few hours but then died during startup again. So, then I got a new HD, cleared cmos, and installed clean again, with the same result as the time before, it worked for a few hours, installed windows updates, then crashed on the 3rd or 4th time turning it on. I decided next to try reinstalling and then going online to see if there were any updates for the BIOS or drivers on the Motherboard, but now I can't get it to even bring up the boot menu, so now I'm just left wondering was it the motherboard, or is it the CPU, or the RAM? The problem was strangely intermittent so I thought it had to be a software issue, since a hardware issue would ALWAYS fail to boot, right? But now it seems to be a hardware issue, because it's not bringing up anything. Any suggestions? • USB 3.0 ports backwards compatibility problems with 2.0 devices?

  I see some info on the net that suggest that I should be able to get my USB 2.0 devices to work in 3.0 ports. I only have two 2.0 ports on my new computer, and six 3.0 ports. I have installed drives. There's two different drivers, I guess some of the ports are supported by the intel board and some supported by some other chipset on the motherboard. I however have yet to get any of the 3.0 ports to work, and my brother had had the same issue with his devices not working in 3.0 ports on his computer. So I am beginning to wonder if the backwards compatibility isn't reliable for some reason. Maybe manufacturers opting not to implement 2.0 support on the 3.0 ports. I understand that physically the wiring is there, but that is only half the story. Beyond my brother's and my own computers (different motherboards/everything), I have yet to see a 2.0 device work in a 3.0 port. Is there any reason for this apparent device incompatibility? I.e. looking for responses that would indicate what areas to explore for issues or if there is any known cases of manufacturers deviating from spec in hardware or drivers. I am aware it's "supposed" to work :) Update: Does this have any relation to "USB Legacy Support" options in the BIOS? There several options combinations of options with "USB Legacy Support" and "USB 3.0 Legacy Support" and the description for these is a bit confusing, sounds like a bad translation.

• JavaScript settings are on but I still have issues with web sites using JavaScript.

  I have two computers that are the same at home except I have installed Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended on my main computer along with the 2010 Outlook (Beta). I have issues when I log into a website that uses pop up calendars to select the date. I pasted it below. I checked my other computer and it is fine. I've checked the Java setting and they are correct. I am at a loss. Any suggestions? • Can't access YouTube

  I can not seem to connect to YouTube at all. If I connect directly to YouTube (youtube.com) I get this: And if I try to connect via video directly (youtube.com/watch?v=), I get this: Here's how this isn't a web issue: I have malware on my computer I believe. And the question here is, how do I get rid of it, or what possible issue could this be? I can verify this is not a website issue or wifi issue, I've tried to connect on another computer in my wifi, and it worked. It is the local machine issue. I've tried to get rid of malware at my best and also have tried to disable possible virus extensions. All can out as the same result: no help. Also, I am unable to find these hiding viruses. I used malware-bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials. Edit: This is OBVIOUSLY Windows. • Arduino IDE "launch 4j" error

  I have a computer running Windows XP. I am trying to run the Arduino IDE 0022. I double-click on arduino.exe, it waits about 30 seconds on the load up title screen, and then it gives me this error: Launch 4j: an error occurred while starting the application My only choice is to click "OK"; the error goes away, and the Arduino IDE closes. If I try to delete the Arduino files (to try overwriting with some different files), I get an error that doesn't allow me to do so: Cannot delete awt.dll: Access denied Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. The only way to delete the file is by restarting the computer. So something must still be trying to run after that first error. I have noticed in Task Manager that some Java programs are still running: javaw.exe (3 processes) I think this is a problem with Java, but I checked and updated all of my Java software and it is all up to date. I have looked on other forums for this issue and none of them seemed to help. From the forums I have tried: Different Arduino IDE versions Updating Java Opening arduino.exe as Administrator Nothing has worked. Anyone have any suggestions?

• How to stop Vista from auto changing video resolution?

  I have new Acer Aspire Revo R3600 computer with Vista pre-installed. The computer has NVidia video adapter. While connecting 17" LCD monitor (LG L1742S) via VGA cable it works fine, and I can change the resolution of the display from max 1920*1024 down to some other value, and after reboot the settings are restored correctly. But when I'm connecting bigger full HD 1920*1080 display (LG E2250) via VGA cable then every boot I have the same problem: I see boot progress window, then I see MS logo, then I see welcome screen then I start to see desktop and suddenly monitor switch off and show me the message about unsupported frequency of input signal As I understand Vista tries to auto-change resolution and sets wrong parameters. I've tried to boot into safe mode and into low-resolution mode, every time I have the same problem: Vista boot-up and suddenly monitor stops working. I've tried to connect this monitor to notebook with Windows XP and has no problem to work with this display on its native resolution. How can I disable this display resolution auto-changer in Vista? Or maybe there is another workaround?

• Searching SharePoint site with Windows Explorer

  Every week, I manually backup recent versions of the files on my group's SharePoint site. I open the library in Windows Explorer, search for all files modified in the past week, then copy and paste them to a network location. We need this process because our SharePoint site has a quota that we would easily meet if we had unlimited versions, so we keep a history of older versions on the network. Recently I got an upgrade to my work computer and I am unable to search the site using Windows Explorer. When I run the search for files modified in the last week no results are returned. If I run a search with no criteria on the file library, all the files are found but the "modified on" field is blank. So the search results only have the file and type fields. The new computer has Windows XP, just like the old one did. I hope this makes sense. Does anyone have any clue what the problem could be? I'd be happy to provide more info if necessary. It's bugging me to no end and I'm not even sure where to begin looking - it's either a trivial issue or a very obscure one. Thanks a lot.

• Router as primary DNS server, Server as alternate? (or vice versa)

  We have a very small business network, with a typical cable modem hooked into a DD-WRT router. We also run a basic CentOS server that does a variety of things, including acting as the primary DNS server for the office. The reason we need an internal DNS server is because we do a lot of internal web development and use the DNS server to add/remove various local network URLs for internal website testing (like www.testsite.com.local). It's very important for us to be able to add/remove URL aliases easily to the DNS. The problem with this setup is that if we ever need to restart the CentOS server or take it offline for upgrades or whatever, then internet access for all computers on the network is lost. That's because each computer relies on that DNS server to access the Internet I guess? The router is online all the time and very very rarely has to be restarted. It would be nice if we could setup my router to be the primary DNS server but still be running DNS on my server. So we could still add my local testing website URLs to the DNS server in CentOS, but be able to also take down the CentOS server without loosing Internet access on the network. How would this be setup? Would I simply need to add both router + server IP addresses to each computer's IP settings? Is the router primary DNS and server secondary DNS server? Or vice versa? Or can one of the two serve as a fallback for the other? What (if anything) needs to be configured on both the router and server in order for them to recognize that the other DNS server exists on the network? Does anyone have any newb-friendly resources for setting up something like this?

• How do you permanently disable the 'This Connection is Untrusted' page on Firefox

  I'm going insane. Can someone please help me to COMPLETELY DISABLE the 'This Connection is Untrusted' page on Firefox. Facts: I am running Firefox 23.0 on an Ubuntu machine (downloaded and installed ubuntu today) It is a work computer and I have to use my employer's proxy While visiting Webpages/webapps like Gmail or Google brings up the 'This Connection is Untrusted' page and I have to go through the whole tedious task of selecting 'I understand the Risks' and add Exceptions, etc. etc. The fact is, I don't care about the risks. I would rather this computer melt into the ground than have to see that page ever again. I want to dance naked in untrusted pages and not give a damn about the consequences. I just never want to see that page again. Ever. For some sites (eg. wikipedia), the css doesn't load and I end up seeing them in plain text. As a result these sites are completely useless. Wasted hours trying to solve this for stackoverflow.com. These issues happen on the Firefox on my Windows XP machine as well (also using the same proxy). I don't want to export/import certificates or create exceptions for every site that shows this bloody page. I just want this page gone. I don't want Firefox to tell me what's safe and what's not. Also, my system time and date are correct. I've also tried the lies on this page too with no good results. Edit: I've also tried the whole going into the Advance-Certificates-validation setup page and unchecked 'Use the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) to confirm the current validity of certificates' checkbox. Nothing happened even after restarting firefox or rebooting. I need help. Thanks.

• Mixing both local and nonlocal addresses on three switches

  I have four computers that have nonlocal addresses like 150.X.X.X. Now I also get another few computers that should be only accessible through a gateway (it will be computing cluster) and they addresses are 10.0.0.X. I also wanted to include those four older computers to this new cluster, but I want them to be accessible from internet on nonlocal addresses (so I would like to set up them on both 150.X.X.X and 10.0.0.X addresses - I've set up it as interface eth0:0 since I have only one NIC). Those new computers have their switch and old computers also have their own switch. Both of them are connected to another (third) switch. The problem is that those old computers see each other (I can ping them), and also new computers see each other, but I can't ping old computer from new computer and vice versa. However pinging on nonlocal adresses works as expected. I looked into switch configuration and didn't find anything useful. I have no idea what I missed here. Can somebody help? All computers have Ubuntu Server 10.04

• Shared External Drive Permission Issues

  So, say I share my system (C) drive through windows (E.g. properties -> Sharing -> Advanced Sharing -> Share this Folder). I can then access this drive at \\Comp\C on another networked computer - all is well. However, if I insert a removable (USB) disk, say "E", and proceed to share it the same way, when I attempt to access \\Comp\E (either directly or through browsing) I get an error: Windows cannot access \\Comp\E You do not have permission to access \\Comp\E. Contact your network administrator to request access. Now, the permissions (Advanced Sharing -> Permissions) are set with "Everyone" having read access (same as the internal drive), so this doesn't make a lot of sense. Also of note, I have an SSH server on my computer (through Cygwin) and even through SSH (logging in as an administrator user) I cannot access /cygdrive/e (although /cygdrive/c is accessible). As a final note, the drive is of course accessible on the host machine (E:\), and also at \\Comp\E on the host machine.

• Revamping an old and unstable IT-solution for a customer?

  I've been given the cumbersome task to totally redo the IT-infrastructure for a customer's office. They are currently running Windows XP all over, with one computer acting as a file server with no control over which users have access to which files, and so on. To top it off, this file server also functions as a workstation, which means it gets rebooted every time the user notices some sluggish behavior or experiences problems with flash games. To say the least, this isn't working for them. Now - I've got a very slim budget, but I need to set up a new server, and I wish to run Windows Server 2008 on it. I also need the ability to access the network remotely via VPN. Would it be a good idea to install VMware ESXi 4.1 onto the new server, and then run Windows Server 2008 as well as a separate Debian install for openvpn on it? I don't like the Domain Controller for the future AD to also run a VPN-server, because of stability issues when something goes to hell with either of them. There will be no redundancy though. However, I'm not sure if there is something to gain by installing a VPN solution on the Windows Server itself, when it comes to accessing file shares on the network via VPN. I don't know how to enable users logging in via the VPN to access the remote files, since they will be accessing the network from their own home computers (which is indeed a really bad idea, but this is what I've got to work with). They won't be logged in to the windows Domain, but rather their home workgroups. I need to be able to grant access to files in certain directories based on the logged in AD-user, but every computer won't necessarily be configured to log into the domain. I'm not sure how to explain this in a good way, but I'd be happy to clarify if somethings not clear. Any help would be great, because I've got a feeling that I can't do this without introducing a bunch of costly new rules when it comes to their IT-solution. I'd rather leave that untouched and go on my merry way to the next assignment.

• Can I select which folders the Photos live tile chooses from?

  The built-in Photos app in Windows 8 has a live tile on the start screen that shows photos from your pictures library. It's a cool little visual, even if it's not particularly useful. The problem is that a lot of image files on my computer are not really photos per se -- I have a lot of screenshots, PNGs of technical drawings, graph images, etc. Those all look pretty awkward on the start screen. I look pretty awkward on the start screen too... sometimes photos like resume profile shots show up that I don't want to delete, but they're not really what I want to be staring at when I start my computer up. I'm looking for some way to configure which folders the Photos app should look in for images to display on the live tile. That way, I could point it to some directories of pretty scenic pictures I've taken, and not have to see graphs and my own mug. For the time being, I've just disabled the live tile (right click - disable live tile), but I would ultimately like to have this functionality, just with more control over it.

• Laptop CPU fan not working properly

  My laptop's CPU fan is suddenly acting very bizarre, and I am at a loss for what to do so I am asking for some help. Specifically, the fan is not even starting to spin until the CPU reaches 60 degrees Celsius (checked through HWmonitor). Once it is on, however, it properly stays on even when the CPU gets back to idle temps around 38 Celsius. Before, the fan was simply starting with the computer and staying on like normal. I've checked this for consistency both by allowing cold boots to ramp up temperature to 60 Celsius (the slow climb also causing the laptop to become unreasonably warm near the heatsink), and also running Prime95 immediately to kickstart the fan (this works every time). The fan seems to be stationary when turning the computer on from either sleep or shutdown. The fan will start at POST very briefly, and then stop completely. I've checked the BIOS for a SmartFan setting but haven't found any. I've opened the case to check for dust or debris and have not found anything (I applied some canned air to the area just in case). The laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E430 and the CPU is an Intel Core i5 3210m @ 2.5 GHz. Any advice would really be appreciated.

  Over the years I have found out a good bit of shortcuts, all of which make using Windows that much faster and easier. I was wondering if I had missed any important ones, or ones that just saved any time. I tried to keep these relative to Windows only, as programs such as Mozilla, Photoshop, etc. bring in hundreds of other shortcuts, which do not apply to all users. These are the current ones I know: For the mouse: Scroll wheel - opens a link in IE into a new tab - closes a specific tab in IE when closed on Right click-n-drag - nifty menu to make a copy of a file or create a shortcut For the keyboard: Cntrl + Alt + Del - need this be explained? WinKey + R - opens 'Run..' WinKey + D - shows the desktop WinKey + E - opens 'My Computer' WinKey + F - opens 'Find..' WinKey + Tab - cool way to switch inbetween windows WinKey + L - locks the computer Alt + Tab - switches windows with a simple interface Alt + F4 - closes windows Alt + F - opens 'File' (Handy for things like IE if you have the menubar disabled) Cntrl + F - find text on current document Cntrl + W - closes a window, or current active tab in IE (or IE itself if only one tab) Cntrl + C - copies selected text / image Cntrl + V - pastes selected text / image So does anyone know of any more shortcuts that just make life easier? I would be much appreciative of any, and I am sure that some other users would like to know some too =]

• Can not connect remotely to MySQL Server on Ubuntu 10.10

  Ok I have searched google for two days trying to get this to work. Here are the steps I have taken so far: Clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 Install mysql 5.1 as well as admin Comment out the bind address in the config file Create a new database Create a new user that is username@% to allow remote connections Grant all access to this user to the new database EXCEPT the grant option Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the localhost Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the server internal network ip Login from a remote computer is ok using this new user and database using the internal network ip Login is not working when logging in with this username and database using the external ip address from the server or the remote computer. I have port forwarding enabled for this port and it is viewable from outside as confirmed by canyouseeme.org I have nmap'd using the following command on the internal ip and get the below result: nmap -PN -p 3306 192.168.1.73 Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-02-19 13:41 PST Nmap scan report for computername-System-Name (192.168.1.73) Host is up (0.00064s latency). PORT STATE SERVICE 3306/tcp open mysql Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.23 seconds I have nmap'd using the following command on the internal ip and get the below result(I have hidden ip for obvious reasons): nmap -PN -p 3306 xxx.xxx.xx.xxx Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-02-19 13:42 PST Nmap scan report for HOSTNAME (xxx.xxx.xx.xxx) Host is up (0.00056s latency). My hard drive has a USB cable and power cord so I can hook it up to any desktop hard drive. Now my hard drives don't like this and I did not know this till now. I am always careful and to wait till it is all finish accessing the USB before I unplug it. Now three of my hard drives can't be seen by Windows, though the others still work. when I hook it up to another computer it works fine. I use the same USB cable to hook up all of my hard drives one at a time. So my USB cable is good. I think that when I unplugged the hard drive this one time, it had a file it still wanted to see and now only this drive does not work only this computer. Then the same thing happens to my other two hard drive after I used it for a week with the same cables. How can I fix this?

• Windows xp blinking under score after bios

  so this is for an older pc I have to repair for a friend. The pc has an hdd of about 60 something gb, It uses win xp and let's say 60-70% of the boots it hangs on showing only an underscore bilking line after bios screen, rest of the times it boots fine or the computer shuts down on xp loading screen. Sometimes if you let it alone while the underscore is blinking, it will boot after a while, like a few minutes, some times it won't boot at all even if you give him more time, like one hour. When it boots successfully the pc seems to work fine. I think it's a bad hard disk and i'm about to suggest buying a new one and switching it but I don't have enough experience and i would hate making him buy a new hdd and not solving the problem. anyone has any tips? I know there are other topics about blinking underscores or cursors while xp is booting but the issues about the pc shutting itself down or sometimes booting really freaks me out. Can't format everything and re install until about 10 days from now, cause the dude has some program for his business on this pc and I have to migrate it when the next computer arrives, however he needs to use it until then. so please advise, thx.

  I want to access the virtual machine using powershell script. For that I used below script, Enter-PSSession -computername sheetal-VDD -credential compose04.com\abc.xyz1 where, sheetal-VDD is hostname of virtual machine compose04.com is the domain name of virtual machine and abc.xyz1 is the username of virtual machine After entering above command , it asks for password. When the password is entered I get below error, Enter-PSSession : Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : WinRM cannot process the reques t. The following error occured while using Kerberos authentication: There are currently no logon servers available to s ervice the logon request. Possible causes are: -The user name or password specified are invalid. -Kerberos is used when no authentication method and no user name are specified. -Kerberos accepts domain user names, but not local user names. -The Service Principal Name (SPN) for the remote computer name and port does not exist. -The client and remote computers are in different domains and there is no trust between the two domains. After checking for the above issues, try the following: -Check the Event Viewer for events related to authentication. -Change the authentication method; add the destination computer to the WinRM TrustedHosts configuration setting or us e HTTPS transport.
