• Best tool to understand source

  I have a source code for a project. I am working on porting it to another device as the current source code is for a linux environment. I am having some error on the newly ported code. So i was thinking it would be best to once again understand the whole source code and this will help me localise the errors. Now the problem is that i tried using 'gdb' for linux to debug the code but it does not help. So is there any tool that I can use to trace the program line by line ? By doing so i can understand the program flow. Please Help !

• Notebook with NVIDIA Optimus not switching video card in games

  I have a Samsung RC720 notebook with Intel Integrated Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M. As you can see it has two video adapters and Optimus is supposed to switch between them. But when I choose dedicated GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel and try to run, for example, GTA IV, it uses integrated graphics and I get very poor performance. I have already installed last NVIDIA and notebook drivers, chose high-performance in NVIDIA Control Panel, tried to execute with "Run with graphics processor..." context option and so on. Thanks for help.

• Need a really simple client manage script to deliver graphics and revisions, please help?

  I am looking for a very simple client management script. The process flow of the script should be: Client orders (paypal etc) while giving specs on what they need given login details and thanked for their order backend for them consists of a 2 way communication. They ask questions we answer. We also upload the graphics here where they either accept them or as for revision. process complete. Now I cannot for the life of me find something as simple as this. It seems all the scripts out there are way too complicated. Does anyone know of one I can use to do this?

• Setting up an SVN repository on a windows server to work with XCode.

  Hi, I need to setup an SVN repository for an iPhone / iPad app that I'm working on. It needs to be setup on a Windows server 2003 instance. We run VSS on it, but it doesn't really work all that well with XCode, so I'd like to migrate ASAP. The problem is, I'm a new graduate and this is the first time I'll be using a souce control software, so any tutorials on how to set one up, configure it to work correctly with Macs using XCode are greatly appreciated! Though it's not a priority, I'd also like to try to get my company to ditch VSS for SVN (Been reading this article yesterday - http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/08/source-control-anything-but-sourcesafe.html). How hard is it to migrate existing builds in VSS into something like SVN? Thanks, Teja

  Is it considered an overkill for console application to be design like MVC , MVP or N tier architecture? If not which is more common and if you can link me to simple example of it. I want to implement a tic tac toe game in console application. I have a solution which hold two projects: TicTacToeBusinessLogic (Class library project) and TicTacToeConsoleApplication (Console application project) to represent the view logic. In the TicTacToeConsoleApplication I've Program.cs class which holds the main entry point (public static void Main). Now I face a problem. I want the game to handle its own game flow so I can: Create new GameManager class (from BL) but this causing the view to directly know the BL part. So I'm a little confused how to write it in an acceptable way. Should I use delegates? Please show me a simple example.

Enter our manager, who requested us to research and possible find an algorithm or existing code that we can use for this very simple approach (like it's easy, source codes don't show up like mushrooms): Always-on app for listening Compare the audio patterns to a single audio file (assume sound is a simple beep) If beep is detected, send notification to server With a flow this simple, do you think acoustic fingerprinting is a broad approach to use? Should we stop and take another approach? Where to best start?   I need to control openfire users and conversations from my own java application, the number of users is more than 1000 , this is what I want to do exactly : Listening for new invitations to chat rooms and accept them automaticly ,listening for new messages for all users and listening for presence staus for all users . As well as I would like to send a new invitation to join a new chat room from specifics users ,send a new message from a user to a chat room and change the presence status of users . To make everything worse, I just started using Amazon's Elastic Load Balancer, so I added the certificate to the ELB and now SSL encryption is happening three times. That's gotta be horrible for performance. What is the sane way to handle this? Should I be forwarding https on the ELB - http on nginx - http on apache? Secondly, there is so much duplication above. Is the best method to not repeat myself to put all of the static asset handling in an include file and just include it in the server?

• How to fix Windows XP from muting sounds on every startup?

  This started to happen few days ago: Every time I start up my computer, the global sound volume ("Playback") is set to muted (from the checkbox), in the sound control panel. So I have to open the control panel every time i start up my computer, and click that checkbox. I have got this bug before, long time ago. I have no idea why is this happening. Any ideas how to fix this or what is causing it? I have SP 3 and most updates installed a half year ago or less.

• Anything to share a printer from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows?

  I've got a printer which only has 32-bit drivers, so it's installed on a 32-bit machine (XP). I need it to appear as a printer (with duplex control etc) on a 64-bit machine (Vista). I can't just share it using Windows printer sharing because the 64-bit client requires drivers to connect to it. There's no 64-bit driver for a similar printer that works (using the new port named \\server\printername). I've tried the ghostscript approach but that doesn't seem to help with the duplex control etc. Printeranywhere doesn't support 64-bit OS yet. Is there another way to do this?

• Good practices in screen states management?

  I wonder what are the best ways to organize different screens in a game? I am thinking of it like this: Inheriting a base State class, and overriding update and render methods, to handle the current screen. Then, under certain events a StateManager is able to activate another Screen State, and the game screen changes as only the current State is rendered. On the activation of a new screen, effects like fading could be added, and also the same goes for its deactivation. This way a flow of screen could be made. By saying when A ends, B starts, allowing for complex animations etc. Toughts?

  The area of virtualization saw quite a few enhancements with version 12.2. There's one particular virtualization enhancement that can make a big difference for a lot of people: support for brownfield Oracle VM Servers for SPARC. Brownfield refers to Oracle VM Servers for SPARC that were created outside of Ops Center. In older versions of Ops Center, you couldn't really do anything with them - Ops Center could only manage OVM Servers that it created. If you had OVM Servers outside of Ops Center, you'd have to recreate them if you wanted to manage them. In 12.2, though, this problem is cleared up. You can discover and manage OVM Servers for SPARC that you created outside of Ops Center, so long as the LDom Manager is running. When you discover the control domain, all of the logical domains are automatically discovered and managed and appear under the control domain in the Asset tree. If you want to use server pools and migrate the logical domains to a different Oracle VM Server for SPARC system, you'll need to move the metadata to a shared library and use shared Fibre Channel or iSCSI LUNs for the guest domain storage and add the server to a server pool. What's the best way to handle the case where the lookup fails? One principle says you should avoid returning null values from functions. These lead to mistakes and AttributeErrors etc. later on in the file. Another idea is to have fetch_by_id raise a ValueError or similar if no user exists with that id. However there's a general principle that you shouldn't use exceptions for control flow, either, which doesn't help much. What could be done better in this case?

• Fan is spinning too fast just in Windows - software?

  I've recently replaced my fans (CPU, GPU, and bought a CHA fan). The GPU remained the same, but I've seen it when it was spinned 2 times faster, than it usual... but it is rarely. The problem is, that the CPU fan in Windows (especially 7) spinned too much, 'cos it keeps in under 40°C, and it is spinning with 3300-3600 RPM, which is too high I think. If I swich to Ubuntu, it keeps on ~40-45°C with with 2500-2800 RPM, which is a big difference in numbers, and in noise. I'm looking for a manual fan control solution, or just reduce the Windows' multipliers of fan speed control, somehow... I was bought the new fans because of the lower noise (and it does it, but not with 3.6k RMP). Thank you!

• For a large website developed in PHP, is it necessary to have a framework?

  I am wondering if it is necessary to have a framework or if it is a must-have if I plan to make a large website. Large website could mean a lot of things: in other words, multiple dynamic web pages (40-50 dynamic pages, mysql content) and a lot of visitors (+- a million hits per month). The site will be hosted in a dedicated server environment. I know that it could simplify coding for a developer team, that it includes libraries and a lot of advantages. But I just feel that I don't need that. I think that learning how it works, managing it and installing it would take more time and I could use that time to code. I write PHP the simplest way I could (with performance in mind) and I try to reuse my code/functions/classes most of the time and I make sure that if another developer joins the team, that he won't be lost in the code. I am also planning to use MemCached or another Cache for PHP. As I said, the site will be hosted in a dedicated server environment but will be entirely managed by the hosting company. I am pretty sure the control panel for me to control the basic stuff will be Cpanel. For a developer like me that only knows PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS, MYSQL and really basic server management, I feel that it seems to complicated to have a framework. Am I wrong? Is it worth the time to learn all about it? Thank you for your opinions and suggestions.

• Nifty default controls prevent the rest of my game from rendering

  I've been trying to add a basic HUD to my 2D LWJGL game using nifty gui, and while I've been successful in rendering panels and static text on top of the game, using the built-in nifty controls (e.g. an editable text field) causes the rest of my game to not render. The strange part is that I don't even have to render the gui control, merely declaring it appears to cause this problem. • Acrobat keyboard stealing in Firefox

  There are times when I open a pdf in firefox(which uses the acrobat plugin) and the "pdf" steals control of the keyboard. The arrow keys do not work in other programs. Well, If I hold them down they will then work but it becomes hard to navigate that way. It seems acrobat installs a global keyboard hook in some cases and takes control of the keyboard. This didn't start happening until recently(a few months ago). Note that it doesn't happen on all pdfs and everything returns to normal when the pdf is closed. This seems to be an issue with acrobat... maybe a setting? Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

• Any way I can correct DNS spoofing against our domain

  This morning I found out that our domain and subdomains have been poisoned on the 4.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 DNS servers along with others I think, though I have not confirmed others yet. Using OpenDNS resolution works correctly. I have updated our local DNS servers and cleared their cache which has fixed things internally. The issue is that the domain is public facing and customers are having problems. We are the authoritative DNS server for the domain and all that is under our control. What I don't know how to do is fix the name servers out of our control. Is there something we can do on our end? At the moment the only workaround I can think of is to ask customers to change their DNS to OpenDNS which is not very practical. The other workaround would be to change our TLD, which is less practical.

• Desktop speakers with headphone port and separate volume controls

  I currently use the excellent Logitech X-230 desktop speaker/subwoofer set, which I love for the volume dial on the front which gives me a nice, quick, tactile control of my sound without requiring a remote or keyboard buttons or some awkward software slider. Additionally, there's a very convenient headphone jack right next to the volume dial but the volume dial only controls the speakers, leaving the headphones at full volume. The goal is to be able to adjust the sound in my headphones without having to fumble around and find an inline headphone volume control (and my current favorite pair doesn't even have one). Is anyone aware of a desktop speaker set that has convenient volume controls for both levels?
