  I have been dreaming of writing book for really long time, and I finally got the chance – in fact, two chances!  I recently wrote two books: SQL Programming Joes 2 Pros: Programming and Development for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 [Amazon] | [Flipkart] | [Kindle] and SQL Wait Stats Joes 2 Pros: SQL Performance Tuning Techniques Using Wait Statistics, Types & Queues [Amazon] | [Flipkart] | [Kindle].  I had a lot of fun writing these two books, even though sometimes I had to sacrifice some family time and time for other personal development to write the books. The good side of writing book is that when the efforts put in writing books are recognize by books readers and kind organizations like expressor studio. Book Signing Event Book writing is a complex process.  Even after you spend months, maybe years, writing the material you still have to go through the editing and fact checking processes.  And, once the book is out there, there is no way to take back all the copies to change mistakes or add something you forgot.  Most of the time it is a one-way street. Book Signing Event Just like every author, I had a dream that after the books were written, they would be loved by people and gain acceptance by an audience. My first book, SQL Programming Joes 2 Pros: Programming and Development for Microsoft SQL Server 2008, is extremely popular because it helps lots of people learn various fundamental topics. My second book covers beginning to learn SQL Server Wait Stats, which is a relatively new subject. This book has had very good acceptance in the community. Book Signing Event Helping my community is my primary focus, so I was happy to see this year’s SQLPASS tag line: ‘This is a Community.‘ At the event, the expressor studio guys came up with a very novel idea. They had previously used my books and they had found them very useful. They got 100 copies of the book and decided to give it away to community folks. They invited me and my co-author Rick Morelan to hold a book signing event. We did a book signing on Thursday between 1 pm and 2 pm. Book Signing Event This event was one of the best events for me. This was my first book signing event outside of India. I reached the book signing location around 20 minutes before the scheduled time and what I saw was a big line for the book signing event. I felt very honored looking at the crowd and all the people around the event location. I felt very humbled when I saw some of my very close friends standing in the line to get my signature. It was really heartwarming to see so many enthusiasts waiting for more than an hour to get my signature. While standing in line I had the chance to have a conversation with every single person who showed up for the signature. I made sure that I repeated every single name and wrote it in every book with my signature. There is saying that if we write a name once we will remember it forever. I want to remember all of you who saw me at the book signing. Your comments were wonderful, your feedback was amazing and you were all very supportive. Book Signing Event I have made a note of every conversation I had with all of you when I was signing the books. Once again, I just want to express my thanks for coming to my book signing event. The whole experience was very humbling. On the top of it, I want to thank the expressor studio people who made it possible, who organized the whole signing event. I am so thankful to them for facilitating the whole experience, which is going to be hard to beat by any future experience. • Android "Hello, MapView" Tutorial - Map Tiles Do Not Load

  I am new to Android software development and new to this site. I am hoping someone might have some experience with the problem I am having. I've been following the Hello, MapView tutorial in order to not only learn the Android framework, but also the Google Maps library. I've tried my best to implement things exactly as the tutorial has instructed. My problem is that the application does load in my emulator (or even on my phone for that matter), but the map tiles do not load. Searching Google I found a post by someone else on another site having the same issue, but his/her problem was that the important elements added to the AndroidManifest.xml file were not in the right order. I double-checked this in mine, but everything seems to be right. So, I am not sure what the issue is and was hoping others have seen this before. I can provide any snippets of code, if that would help. Thank you.

  I've just started playing with The Django Form Validation Framework on Google App Engine (from google.appengine.ext.db import djangoforms) and I got stuck googling how to customize forms using it. I was wondering whether the following are possible using the package: Add help texts beside/below input/select fields and textareas (e.g. "This field is required", "Example: qwerty123") Add/modify attributes for the input/select fields and textareas (e.g. adding the following attributes: class, id, name, maxlength, minlength, etc.) Add custom validations like checking whether a particular field should be unique or checking a value against a regular expression Modify the error messages Add another column to the table generated by the form Also note that djangoforms.ModelForm is different from django.forms.Form.

• App Engine Authentication Error

  I have an app hosted by google app engine, and I am having trouble with authentication. When I login using my admin account and try to access the admin page or members pages, I just get a blank screen. I can login, and the members only menu shows when I login, but I just can't see any data from the members pages. I'm not really sure where I should start checking? My app is registered with my google apps account and I am using the only admin login that is there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have done this before when I have access to the server by creating a network share and using Google desktop. I currently do not have access to this subversion server box. Any Ideas?   Hi there, I recently edited the robots.txt file in my site using a wordpress plugin. However, since i did this, google seems to have removed my site from their search page. I'd appreciate if I could get an expert opinion on why this is so, and a possible solution. I'd initially done it to increase my search ranking by limiting the pages being accessed by google. Does someone can give me a hint how-to?

• Load nsimage from url but only some url's work

  I have some code that loads an image file off the web and puts it in an image view. The problem is it works with everything but Google Charts. This is frustrating because I was relying on this to graph data for my app. Heres the url I need to load: Click to see my test chart. Im not sure why NSImage seems to refuse to load this when it works with everything elese. If you know why or have a work-around any help is appreciated.   Hi, I ran across an odd problem while trying to transfer a project to a windows machine. • GData for my own API?

  Hi StackOverflow! Im currently planning to build an API for my service. I want to use GData because it fits the application scheme and there are libraries for many programming languages available. The first question that rose: Am I allowed to do that? I mean, Google put lots of work into the GData specification and have some sort of copyright. Does anyone know anything about this issue or did that before? You could extend the case if you want to specifically mimic an API which uses GData like the YouTube API to have my API 100% compliant. This is not my case, but I was wondering about that too. :-) Thank you for any input, Malax Edit: Note that i want to use it for my own service. • How do I display a local html file in a UIWebView?

  I have a relatively simple question that I cannot seem to find the answer for. While doing the Google Maps Java API Tutorials, I ran into a problem. I can load an HTML file from the web, but when I try it locally, it just displays the contents of the file instead of running the script. • Update frequency for dynamic favicons

  I wanted to learn how to dynamically update the favicon using the Google Chrome browser and I've noticed that the browser seems to throttle how often you can update the favicon per second and that sort of makes things look sloppy. The test page I've made for this is: http://staticadmin.com/countdown.html Which is simply a scrolling message displaying the results of a countdown. I added an input field to tweak how many pixels per second are moved by the script and I've eyeballed the max to be about 5 frames per second smoothly in Google Chrome and I have not tested it in any other browsers. My question is what is the maximum frequency, are there any ways to change, is there a particular reason behind it? NOTE: I've also noticed that this value changes based on window focus as well. It seems to drop to about 1 update per second when the browser's window isn't in focus and returns to "max" when you return.

• How can I learn a multitouch screen's communication protocol and write a C# application for it?

  I have got a monitor with multitouch overlay on top of it. It works fine with Windows 7 but I want to write a multitouch application in C# for Windows XP which doesn't support touch feature out of the box. There is no documentation whatsoever and I emailed the manufacturer but never got a reply. However the device works with Google Earth, which doesn't natively support multitouch, on Windows XP. So I think it generates many types of messages together i.e. WM_TOUCH for Windows 7, one for Google Earth COM API, and probably its own messages either in UDP or Windows message form. How can I trap all communications and learn the protocol?

This technique has worked marvelously for me - as it has created only one global footprint in the DOM and has given me a very flexible framework to grow each additional feature of the application. However - I am reaching the point where I'd really rather not keep this entire application inside one JavaScript file. I'd like to move from having one large uniqueApplication.js file during development to having a separate file for each feature in the application, featureOne.js - featureTwo.js - featureThree.js Once I have completed offline development testing, I would then like to use something, perhaps Google Closure Compiler, to combine all of these files together - however I want these files to all be compiled inside of that scope, as they are when I have them inside one file - and I would like for them to remain in the same scope during offline testing too. I see that Google Closure Compiler supports an argument for passing in modules but I haven't really been able to find a whole lot of information on doing something like this. Anybody have any idea how this could be accomplished - or any suggestions on a development practice for writing a single JavaScript Library across multiple files that still only leaves one footprint on the DOM?

• Track http domain referer

  Can i track the http referer with javascript, and append a variable to the URL string to store into a dbase? or could i track a cookie that the user gets? (very layman's terms here, sorry) if http referrer is domain.com add to url '&referer=google' which should stay with them during their session. OR when a user clicks my Google adwords ad. they get a cookie with a referring domain in it. try to read that cookie, and append the same variable. any thoughts?

  I am looking for a Chess AI that can be run on Google App Engine. Most chess AI's seem to be written in C and so can not be run on the GAE. It needs to be strong enough to beat a casual player, but efficient enough that it can calculate a move within a single request (less than 10 secs). Ideally it would be written in Python for easier integration with existing code.
