• Cloud computing cost savings for large enterprise

  I'm trying to understand whether cloud computing is meant for small to medium sized companies OR also for large companies. Imagine a website with a very large user base. The storage and bandwidth demands as well as the number of database transactions are incredibly high. The website might be hosting videos, music, images, etc. that keep the demands high. Does it make sense to be in the cloud when you know you need huge volumes of storage, bandwidth, and GET,PUT,etc. requests? (Each of these variables costs money in the cloud) OR does it make sense to build your own infrastructure? I can see the cost savings of cloud computing if you are a small business, but if you were aiming at the next big thing on the Internet, I can't quite see the benefits.

• How do I increase the touchpad sensitivity on Acer Aspire One 532h?

  I got a cheap netbook and put ubuntu on it without even booting into the windows it came with. I am now slightly regretting it since the trackpad is very annoying, it only registers when I press quite hard on it, and even then the motion is so slow that I must drag me poor finger 3 times to get the pointer to move up or down that tiny screen. OK. enough rant. now business: I went into the setting and increase sensitivity and acceleration to high. No difference. the behaviour did not change at all. So now my questions are: Is this a hardware problem? Is there a program I can run to see what input the trackpad is receiving? so I know if it can, in theory, read the light touch and not only the heavy, sandpaper-your-fingertips-off touch? is there some manual setting that the system might not be setting correctly and which I could change from the terminal?

  I need to purchase a single license for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN. The MSDN buy site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb841434.aspx) does not allow purchases from India. It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate?   I want to know if the structure for an ASP.NET website I'm working on uses a design pattern for it's web pages. If it is a design pattern, what is it called? The web pages have the following structure: UserDetails page (UserDetails.aspx) - includes UserDetailsController.ascx user control. UserDetailsController.ascx includes sub user controls like UserAccountDetails.ascx and UserLoginDetails.ascx etc Each sub user control contains a small amount of code/logic, the 'controller' user controls that host these sub user controls (i.e UserDetailsController.ascx) appear to call the business rules code and pass the data to the sub user controls. Is this a design pattern? What is it called?

The complete end-to-end sample application will build a eCommerce website and follows the Java EE 6 design principles of simple and easy-to-use to its core. Its using several technologies from the platform such as JPA 2.0, CDI 1.0, Bean Validation 1.0, EJB Lite 3.1, JSF 2.0, and JAX-RS 1.1.   I'm just about to start a new business which creates niche affiliate sites. I'm curious about the impacts to me from Google of all the urls being hosted with the same analytic tags, webmaster tool tags and server ip ranges. To benefit the most from google's serps should i have each domain within seperate analytic accounts and webmaster tools or is it ok for me to have all of my domains within one account. My issue is duplicate content and the fact that i am building a publisher network and i'm not sure how much google likes them. I'm notoriously bad at searching and as such havent found what i'm looking for yet. Any help would be very much appreciated.

• Is there any way to get faster app reviews?

  I am trying to build a business around an iPhone app. The app will be our main sales channel, and being able to adapt the sales channel faster than the 9-10 days delay cause by the app review times is crucial. Therefore, I was wondering whether there is anything I can do to improve the speed of reviews. I am thinking that the publishers of Angry Birds, surely would not have to wait in line for reviews on the same terms as some obscure free app. So what can I do? Some things I am considering: Would Apple prioritize apps that they earn money on? Could I in some way pay Apple directly? I already know of the possibility of requesting an expedite review, but it seems like one can get punished for supplying a non-technical reason.

• Google App Engine: How to be notified when APIs change or become available?

  I am thinking about writing a GAE app but am a little hesitant because the EULA gives Google full rights to change their APIs anytime they want, for any reason. Obviously, they'd be out of business quick if they just 'upped and refactored their entire APIs, so I have to imagine they have some kind of notification system, perhaps even an RSS feed, etc. to notify developers well in advance of looming changes, or new features coming out in future releases. However, for the life of me I can't seem to find any trace of the existence of such a notification system. Perhaps the Google forums is the only place to get such updates? I guess I'm asking any battle-worn GAE veterans for re-assurance that there are reliable ways of getting notifications about policy or API changes from Google such that I could react and make the necessary app changes without production breaking or impacting any clients.   I was reading a book about SW engineering the other day and it went like: Sources of both functional and non-functional requirements are: law (for specific cases) business and user requirements etc. //what else then? So the question is, what other sources of requirements there are when an analyst is gathering the information? Lets consider a desktop app for mobile operator. As for the comment, I do not think this is a broad question as the books usually mention 1-2 sources. I would like to know more, if anyone can help.

• Reasons to use C++ ?

  I've read here and in other places that learning C++, C or other low level languages are a must to get a more low level perspective on development. I agree with this, but I find it hard to find a reason to use C++ over C# or similar languages. Most of the work I do is web based, so there's no need for C++ there. Other work is windows based, and most things work fine in C# there, so what sort of situation could I use C++? I don't do any high performance stuff, nor do I create games, mostly business applications. I'm looking for an excuse to expand on my C++ knowledge but I need some motivation other than 'because the internet said I should'.
