• Mohsen Agsen on C++

  As I already blogged a while back, native code has been on the lips of many since TechEd 2011. Microsoft seems very committed to actually putting the language to use again after all these years of radio silence. Regarding this I urge you all guys to watch this video interview of Mohsen Agsen about C++ Today and Tomorrow http://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Going+Deep/Mohsen-Agsen-C-Today-and-Tomorrow on Channel 9. What I find very inspiring about this interview is that Microsoft has a number of internal projects where they are using C++ and they really understand the value of C++ as a highly performant programming language. He also talks about combining managed code, scripted code and native code to get the most out of each of them. This is something that we are doing a lot in the game industry, since we recognize the need for performant platform code with an easy to write scripting layer on top of that. This is something I intend to blog about in the near future, so stay tuned! Another great thing that I bumped into recently is C++ AMP that was announced at this year’s AMD Fusion Developer Summit. I would recommend watching Herb Sutter’s keynote on the subject at http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/AFDS-Keynote-Herb-Sutter-Heterogeneous-Computing-and-C-AMP.

• Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. We look forward to gathering your feedback on the new adapter design! We plan to include the Observable adapter implementation into the product in a future release of Microsoft StreamInsight. • MSExchangeMailSubmission service is not listed or running; sent mail not working

  I am running a new Exchange 2007 SP1 system. I moved the mailboxes from the old Exchange 2003 server, and incoming mail is working. But outgoing mail is not working at all; even inside my domain. Lots of debugging and searching lead me to believe that the problem is that the "Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission Service" (AKA MSExchangeMailSubmission) is not running. In fact, it's not even listed in the Services list. This document (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998342.aspx) says that this service is installed by the Mailbox server role. My server is running the Mailbox role, as well as the Hub Transport and Client Access roles. How do I get this service to show up in the list, so that I can start it up? Thanks.

  Hi, I have a phone landline connection and I DO NOT have a phone instrument. I connect the cable into my laptop, and want to make calls using my laptop. I have an HDA CX20561 modem. I seem to be able to dial number using dialer.exe, though nothing seems to happen. From Microsoft kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958143, it looks like dialer.exe alone is not enough for the call. Can somebody tell me how to make and receive phone call with whatever hardware I have, i.e. what software will I need. Thanks.

  Quick resolution: Give full permission to AUTHENTICATED USERS in following folders. a) ORACLE_HOME b) Program Files\ORACLE   Check your PATH. You might have installed different clients in your system and your .NET application is pointing to a home with inappoperiate client. What your .NET application should load is OCI.DLL with File version more than 8.1.7. According to the MSDN document Oracle and ADO.NET:   "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle provides access to an Oracle database using the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) as provided by Oracle Client software. The functionality of the data provider is designed to be similar to that of the .NET Framework data providers for SQL Server, OLE DB, and ODBC. "     The MSDN document System Requirements (Oracle) says: "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle requires Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 or later. MDAC 2.8 SP1 is recommended. You must also have Oracle 8i Release 3 (8.1.7) Client or later installed. "   Both the .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle and Oracle Data Provider for .NET are data providers to access Oracle database. The former ships with .NET Framework and requires Oracle client version 8.1.7 or above. The latter is provided by Oracle company and requires Oracle client version 9.2 or later.     The Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) features optimized ADO.NET data access to the Oracle database. • MSDN / TechNet Key Importer for KeePass 2

  If you have an MSDN account and, like me, systematically claim keys just as well as you systematically forget which keys you’ve used in which test environments! Well, in a meager attempt to help myself track my keys I created an importer for KeePass 2 that takes in the XML document that you can export from MSDN and TechNet. The source is available at https://github.com/svickn/MicrosoftKeyImporterPlugin.   How do I get my KeysExport.xml from MSDN or TechNet? Easy! First, in MSDN, go to your product keys. From there, at the top right select Export to XML. This will let you download an XML file full of your Microsoft Keys.   How do I import it into KeePass 2? The instructions are simple and available in the GitHub ReadMe.md, so I won’t repeat them. Here is a screenshot of what the imported result looks like:   As you can see, the import process creates a group called Microsoft Product Keys and creates a subgroup for each product. The individual entries each represent an individual key, stored in the password field. The importer decides if a key is new based on the key stored in the password, so you can edit the notes or title for the individual entries however you please without worrying about them being overwritten or duplicated if you re-import an updated KeysExport.xml from MSDN! • Mouse doesn't work & internet connection not made in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Yesterday, Nov 15, 2012, I booted into my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system. It has resided on a Crucial 128 GB SSD with about 90% free space since early summer. I also have Windows 7 loaded on another Crucial 256 GB SSD. Ubuntu has set up a dual boot system for me even though each OS has its own SSD. I have been using this setup without problems since summer. Yesterday, when the boot process finished, my Microsoft Comfort Mouse 3000 did not work and there was a message that Ubuntu was not connected to the internet. So w/o the mouse I was forced to turn the machine off manually. About 4 days ago Ubuntu worked fine and booting into Win 7 also works fine. I have a backup machine with the same style mouse on it so I swapped the mouse onto this system. Same results. But both mice work when booting into Win 7. Today I removed both SSDs and installed my Ubuntu 12.04 HD which has not been used since I moved Ubuntu to the SSD from it. Same results. Between the last time I used Ubuntu 12.04 on the SSD and when I tried to use it again I made no changes to my machine, either hardware or software. My machines specs are: AMD FX-6100, MSI 990FXA-GD65 AM3+ format with latest BIOS (Ver 19.9), Corsair Vengeance 1866 MHz memory - 16 GB (4GB X 4 sticks), MSI N580GTX video card (nVidia 306.97 drivers), Sony Bravia 32" HD TV as a monitor, Pioneer BluRay DVD-RW, DSL connection to internet thru a router (10 mps), Crucial 128 GB SSD (90% free space), Microsoft Comfort Mouse 3000 I try to maintain current BIOS and drivers for all devices. I mostly use my Ubuntu system for programming in GCC and OpenCOBOL, surfing the internet and e-mailing. No games are installed. I'm stumped! If anyone has experienced this same problem I'd appreciate knowing how you solved it. TIA, Dave

  Today is a very exciting day: After the official release of Windows 8 (and Microsoft Surface!) on Friday, and the official release of Windows Phone 8 on Monday, the Build conference is starting! This is the conference in which we will learn all about the developer experience for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. As a partner of Microsoft, I had the privilege of trying out some of the new things early, and this gave me the opportunity to port MVVM Light to Windows Phone 8 (it was already running for Windows 8), and today I am officially publishing this new version. Before you go and update, please not the following: V4.1 (4.1.24.0) only supports Visual Studio 2012 (and Express). If for some reason you are still using Visual Studio 2010, don’t despair! In the next few days I will publish an update supporting these versions as well. But for now, please only upgrade if you are on VS12! • First Experience with Web Services

  When I first started programming with Microsoft .Net (1.0 Framework) I had a strong desire to learn how search engines indexed web sites. At that time I was a working as a search engine spammer creating web pages to generate traffic for specific themes for various clients. One way I attempted to better understand .Net was to build a web spider that analyzed web pages on demand. An example of the spider is hosted at AddLinkz.com. After my spider was built I had no real idea what I could/should do with it until I found the MSN Search API. I used this web service to compare its results with my spider. Additionally, I used the API to feed my .Net web spider new URLs from the API based on specific search terms. MSN’s search API was very easy to use, I just had to request information by calling a web URL with parameters via a Get request and the results were returned in XML. At that time all requests were limited to XML responses and a maximum of 1,000 results per query.   Since then the entire API has gone through several reconstructions, rebranding and new search services.  Microsoft’s new Bing API replaced the older MSN search API and added several new search capabilities. These new features allow search data to be returned for web searches, image searches, new searches, and related search terms to name a few.   I get asked quite a bit about auditing in SQL Server. By "audit", people mean everything from tracking logins to finding out exactly who ran a particular SELECT statement. In the really early versions of SQL Server, we didn't have a great story for very granular audits, so lots of workarounds were suggested. As time progressed, more and more audit capabilities were added to the product, and in typical database platform fashion, as we added a feature we didn't often take the others away. So now, instead of not having an option to audit actions by users, you might face the opposite problem - too many ways to audit! I have windows XP, and i am going to have to have a VM running: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 Sql Server 2008 IIS 7 (8 in a little while) Wamp Photoshop CS5 etc... so i was wondering what should i use to be easier to install and configure, and best performance: Virtual Box or Microsoft's Virtual Machine? Thank you Well i tried Virtual Box, it's always crashing for some reason. I think i'm going to try Virtual PC, just to stick to an all Microsoft Solution.

  Having recently upgraded to Windows 8, my script to retrieve the current desktop wallpaper image has broken. For Windows 7, How could I find out the path to the current desktop image?, this works great. However, that registry key now always contains C:\Windows\web\wallpaper\Windows\img0.jpg What is the new registry key used for Windows 8? I've found two possible solutions. Firstly, this key contains what looks like a Base64 encoded path: HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Wallpapers/Images/ID2 And then there is the "custom theme properties file" which also contains a "[SlideShow]" section which looks like Base64: C:\Users\Scott\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\Custom.theme

  Very slow processing using Windows Server2008 R2 Standard with Service Pack One. Situation: Read a text file using the text data to populate a series of MS Sql tables. The converted data is used to generate monthly PDF invoice files; the PDF files are saved directly to the hard drive. The application is multi-threading with one thread used for the text conversion and three threads for PDF invoice generation. The text conversion is occurring concurrently with the invoice generation. Application Software: C# using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. Crystal Report Writer 2011 with runtime 13_0_3 64 bit version. Targeted platform is x64; also tested as x86, and Any CPU with similar results. Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. Microsoft Sql 2008 Issue: The software is running very slowly. The conversion of the text file is approximately six hundred fifty records per second and generation of the PDF files is approximately twelve invoices per minute. The text file to be converted is six hundred Meg with seven thousand invoices to be generated. The software was installed on three different machines from the same distribution files. The same text file was converted on each machine. The user executing the application was an administrator on each machine. The only variances were the machine and operating system. • Windows 7: How to display the total size of Recycle Bin

  On Windows XP, the total size of Recycle Bin could be seen easily, but I can't see it on Windows 7. Why did Microsoft hide/remove this feature? Am I missing something? REMARK 1: I don't need to see the maximum size that Recyle Bin can contain. REMARK 2: Once you have several files selected in the Recycle Bin, you get a "See more details" link in the status bar, but clicking on that does not display the total file size. Microsoft has apparently changed this.

• Is there a way to enable metro on a 1024x600 netbook?

  Windows 8 Consumer Preview works great on my 1024x600 netbook but, for some strange reason, Microsoft decided to provide its Metro interface only to 1024x768 and up screens. "Strange" because Android can work with as little as 240x320 screens, and I know that Microsoft is presumably targeting smartphones, too, in its upcoming Windows 8. The interface itself is there with all the panels etc. but when one of the rectangles is pressed, Windows 8 just refuses to launch any application (even Internet Explorer), except for Windows Explorer. Looks to me like this isn't a real hardware limitation but some arbitrary flag set in the registry. Is there any way or tweak to enable the Metro interface on 1024x600 screen?

• Replicating EFS encrypted files

  Recently I attempted to configure Microsoft's DFSR on Windows 2008 R2 to replicate a folder which was encrypted with EFS. The setup gave no errors or warnings, but later I read that DFSR does not support EFS in any way. There were also event logs in the DFSR event log indicating an encrypted file was found and wont be replicated. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773238(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_052 My question is, are there any tools that would allow this to occur? Software based preferably.This would be replicating over LAN to destination node for two servers on the same domain.

  I want use windows policy setting to limit access to removable media. This can be done by setting [HKEY_USERS\<uid>\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\RemovableStorageDevices] "Deny_All"=dword:00000001 for limiting a specific user [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\RemovableStorageDevices] "Deny_All"=dword:00000001 for all users on the machine. I'm looking for a method to limit all users, with the exception of one specific local user. However, the limitation appears to be additive - there is no way (that I know of) to define an exception for a specific user. Is there some kind of alternative?
