  • Can I use GPL software in a commercial application

    I have 3 questions about the GPL here: If I use GPL software in my application, but don't modify or distribute it, do I have to release my application under the GPL? What if I modify some software that my application uses. Then do I have to release my application under the GPL, or can I just supply the modified software under the GPLs terms. And what if I use GPL software, but don't modify it, can I distribute it with my application? My case in point is, I have a PHP framework which I use the GeSHi library to highlight some output. Because GeSHi is GPL, does my framework have to be GPL? Can I modify GeSHi for particular use cases of my application if I supply the modifications back to the GeSHi maintainers? Can I redistribute my framework with GeSHi?

  • Dealing with technical debt

    This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

  • Nvidia Driver versions?

    I've looked all over and can't find any reason as to why or how Nvidia names their drivers. for example they have a 330.xxx/340.xxx series that are current but also a 300.xxx and i've found that they aren't always release in order by number. Here's an example on there site with version and release date 331.38 - January 13 334.16 - Feb 7 331.49 - Feb 18 I'm really confused about what driver to actually go with, a few different series versions seem to work adequately and I just want to have an understanding of it and what the best option to work from would be. I really appreciate any information

    I keep having trouble getting the correct monitor resolution - every time I reinstall, I happen to use a newer Ubuntu release and the old tricks I used to know no longer work. Instead of leaving a long trail of questions for every new release, I am looking for a more universal and timeless solution. What's the correct way to set the correct monitor resolution with an Nvidia GPU for a screen that does not send EDID values? Note: This is a "dummy" question -- with the help from the chat, I already found the answer, and I am now going to add my own answer to document a solution that is hopefully universal.

    This is the first in a series of blog posts based around an application called Task-It that I have developed in Silverlight 4. Task-It is real-world application designed for people that need a simple way to manage the numerous tasks that we all strive to accomplish on a daily basis.     Quick shoutout for the Fusion Applications (Cloud Applications to you) Developer Relations blog post about translating Fusion apps customizations using composers and other tools and utilities provided by Oracle. Great to see Fusion help customizations included in the post, as well as software, and it also includes a nice heads up on what's coming to enable customers to make changes to text themselves in Release 8 of Oracle's Cloud Applications. I am proud to say that I logged the enhancements for what's coming in Release 8  to come to life and also wrote a spec for its requirements based on the customer research done internationally through the Oracle Usability Advisory Board). Remember,  copywriting is design and translated versions means reflecting local UX requirements too! Nice post guys!

In addition to the usual chunk of bug fixes, this release includes the following new features: NATIVE authentication, a new authentication mechanism with better support for managing credentials.   • Oracle Service Contracts – Calculate Estimated Tax with Higher Accuracy

    On a Service Contract the tax rate and its effectivity can change over the contract duration.  Hence, service organizations need to provide an accurate picture of the estimated tax that the customer might end up paying.  Prior to Release 12.1.3+, the Oracle Service Contracts application calculated the estimated tax based on the line/ sub line start date.  With Release 12.1.3+ (via Patch 16601269:R12.OKS.B) , new functionality provides users with an option to calculate tax at contract billing schedule level, thereby considering the changes in tax rate effectivity at that level.A new profile option 'OKS: Calculate Tax at Schedule' has been introduced which can be used to control whether the existing or new functionality is used.  If the profile is set to 'Yes' the application calculates tax at the billing schedule level for all lines/ sub lines.  For more details on the implementation steps and functionality, please refer to Doc ID 1676700.1: Oracle Service Contracts – How To Calculate Estimated Tax with Higher Accuracy.
