    I have a tree structure in an sql table like so: CREATE TABLE containers ( container_id serial NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, parent integer REFERENCES containers (container_id)) Now i want to define an ordering between nodes with the same parent. I Have thought of adding a node_index column, to ORDER BY, but that seem suboptimal, since that involves modifying the index of a lot of nodes when modifying the stucture. That could include adding, removing, reordering or moving nodes from some subtree to another. Is there a sql datatype for an ordered sequence, or an efficient way to emulate one? Doesn't need to be fully standard sql, I just need a solution for mssql and hopefully postgresql EDIT To make it clear, the ordering is arbitrary. Actually, the user will be able to drag'n'drop tree nodes in the GUI

  • How to keep statefull web clients in sync, when multiple clients are looking at the same data?

    In a RIA web client, created with GWT, the state is maintained in the web client, while the server is (almost) stateless (this is the preferred technique to keep the site scalable). However, if multiple users looking at the same data in their browser and one user changes something, which is send to the server and stored in the database, the other users still have the old data in their browser state. For example a tree is shown and one of the users adds/removes an item from the tree. Since there can be a lot of state in the client, what is the best technique to keep the state in the clients in sync? Are there any java frameworks that take care of this?

  • Best practices to keep up a diverging branch of code

    I'm in a situation where some minor patches I've submitted to an open-source project were ignored or explicitly not accepted. I consider them useful, but more important is that I need the functionality they implement. I don't want to push my ideas and suggestions anymore to the main contributors, because I don't want to turn this into an ego issue. I've decided that my best bet would be just to use what I wrote for my own purposes. I don't want to fork the whole source code tree because I like how things are generally working, I'm just not happy with details. But I do realize that the project will evolve and I would like to use the new features that will eventually appear. I understand that I'll have to merge all new things into my own source tree. Are there any best practices for this scenario?

    Basically Ive written a Parse for a language with just basic arithmetic operators ( +, -, * / ) etc, but for the minus and plus cases, the Abstract Syntax Tree which is generated has parsed them as right associative when they need to be left associative. Having a googled for a solution, i found a tutorial that suggests rewriting the rule from: Expression ::= Expression <operator> Term | Term as Expression ::= Term <operator> Expression*. However in my head this seems to generate the tree the wrong way round. Any pointers on a way to resolve this issue?

  • How do I sync two local file structures.

    Hi, I have two large source trees. One of them has some out of date image files. I would like to automatically update all the old image files (png, jpg, gif) in one source tree with the up to date image files in the other source tree. I am using Windows 7 but I have Cygwin installed. I have tried using rsync so far but with no success. I was hoping I could do something like: rsync -r *.png newSourceTree oldSourceTree Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Reorganising git commits into different branches

    I am trying to reorganise my git tree so that it is structured a bit better. Basically at the moment I have a single master branch with a couple of small feature branches that split from it. I want to go back and reorder it so that the only commits in the main branch are the ones corresponding to new version numbers and then have all the in between commits reside in a separate develop branch from which the feature branches split from too. Basically I'm looking for a tool that will let me completely manually reorganise the tree. I thought maybe that interactive rebasing was what I was looking for but trying to do so in sourcetree makes it seem like it is not the right tool. Can anyone give me some advice on how best to proceed.   • Magento, NGINX, PHP-FPM, APC, MEMCACHED, 16gb Ram CentOS, Spiking PHP-FPM to 100% CPU

    I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to: pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 12 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 10 pm.max_requests = 500 php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M Problem still exists. I'm running a Joomla main site (which is having no problems) and a Magento store in a sub-directory. My server is a Linux CentOS, running NGINX, APC, Memcached, Full Page Cache and php-fpm. My server has 8 cores and 16gb dedicated ram. My host has shut down my server several times the past week because my php-fpm processes are consuming the entire network. A lot of the individual php-fpm processes are getting over 50% cpu. I've hired several "professionals" and none of them was able to help me, so now broke and stumped, I'm turning to you guys for help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Shouldn't this be set to 80% of available ram? So I have 16gb ram so it should be set at 12G; however, I set it at 10G. What do you think? I made that change and restart everything. Php-fpm is still spiking cpu.     I'm trying to give permissions to a (sql 2005) database app based on AD groups. The general idea is to require a user to have a membership to "app_users" to view anything, and membership to other groups gives them write access to that group. "app_customers" gives write access to the customers module, "app_sales" to sales, etc. I've listed an example below: user1: AD member of app_users user2: AD member of app_users, app_customers For dbo.customers table: app_users - Granted: Select permission - Denied: Insert, Update, Delete app_customers - Granted: Select permission - Granted: Insert, Update, Delete I would expect user1 to be able to view the dbo.customers table, but will not be allowed to modify anything (insert/update/delete) - which works. In the same vein, I would expect user2 to be able to view AND modify the dbo.customers table, since they are a member of app_customers. However, this is not the case. Instead, user2 is denied any modifications just like user1. I seem to remember something about deny permissions winning if there was a conflict, but it's honestly been too long since I've dealt with them. Am I going about this the right way?   • Error 53 - The network path was not found.

    I have a machine in my Active Directory Domain that I can no longer "net view" from other machines in the domain. This is a Windows XP Pro machine. It is hosting a VMWare virtual of my Domain Controller. If I attempt to net view [machine name] I get system error 53, The network path was not found. This is not a DNS issue, the same thing happens with the machine's IP. I don't think it's a firewall issue, I turned the firewall off on this machine. As I mentioned, it has worked in the past, and then stopped for no reason that I can see. I (intentionally) didn't change the software. I CAN get to the VMs hosted on this machine, can connect to their shares, net view them, etc. All other machines can see each other. In fact, the problem machine can see other machines and access their shares just fine. I tried removing the machine from the domain and re-adding it. I tried deleting the shares and recreating them. Not sure how to troubleshoot this any further. Any ideas?

  • Utility to store/cache all web pages and YouTube videos

    I found myself in the following situation. I'm travelling abroad with my laptop. I connect to a WiFi point and do a bit of browsing and play a YouTube video or two. Then I disconnect and hop on either a plane or taxi. Now I want to go back to some of the webpages I was browsing before and continue reading them, or watch some more of that YouTube video. Unfortunately it seems like none of these resources are cached, or if they are, I have no idea how to access them. Here's what I'd like: A utility that starts when my computer boots and sits in the background, silently caching all the web pages that I view. Not only that, but also the resources such as YouTube videos. Later, when I re-navigate to a site while disconnected, the browser automatically pulls the pages from my cache rather than giving me a 404 error. Or I can click an icon in the system tray and see a list of all the pages/videos in the cache and view any that I like. I'm sure Internet Explorer had a feature like this at some point, like "Offline Mode" or something. But these days it doesn't seem to work. Even when I select that option I still can't view pages that I'm certain I downloaded before. So has the utility I'm talking about been developed yet?

  • Windows Explorer slow to open networked computer, fast to navigate once opened

    I open Windows Explorer and enter an IP for a computer on my home network (\\192.168.1.101). It takes 30 seconds or more to present a list of the shared folders. It does not appear to be an initial handshaking/authentication thing; even if I allow the view to load and then immediately load the same again, it is always slow. Once they appear, navigating through folders and opening files is fast. Also, navigating directly to a folder (\\192.168.1.101\My Music) is fast, even if it's the first connection since a restart. Using \\computerName instead of the IP address gives exactly the same results. Pings return in 1ms. net view \\computerName (or \ipAddress) returns the list of shared folders fast. This makes me suspect an Explorer issue rather than a network issue. Suspecting that the remote computer was being automatically indexed or something, I went into Tools-Folder Options-View and unchecked "Automatically search for network folders and printers," but that made no difference. De-selecting the "Folders" icon near the address bar makes no difference. Adding the IP address and computer name to the hosts file makes no difference. Both computers involved are laptops running Windows XP. Both have WiFi and cable adapters. Mine is not connected via cable. The result is the same whether the target is plugged in to the cable or not (although the IP address changes - 192.168.1.101 over cable, 192.168.1.103 over WiFi.) We are using DHCP assigned by the router.

  • Libraries merged folder views

    So I pretty much love the Windows 7 Libraries feature, and saw one use for them that I thought would be perfect, but I can't seem to manage it. Basically, a merged view of different folder structures. Suppose I make a new generic library and add three locations to it: C:\Test\, D:\Test\ and D:\temp\Test\. Now, these may look somewhat okay as long as there are no duplicates in these folders. (It wants to group them based on the included directory, which one can work around by looking on google - I don't have the precise trick on hand I am afraid.) But when you get collisions and, say, two of those directories have a Sub directory in them, stuff becomes unusable (assuming Arrange by: Folder view). You'll have multiple folders listed named Sub, which is pretty useless when looking for data. I want folders to get 'merged', which ought to be possible somehow since it can create these merged views based on artist, album etc in other views. So all subdirectories that are double (and recursively checking for doubles inside those, etc) ought to be merged for as far the View is concerned. If files have a collision, I don't really care what happens - hide one, show both, filter out duplicates, whatever. (Although an option would be nice...) Anyhow, is there anyone who knows how to get such a 'merged folder structure' functionality for Libraries? It would be really useful for me.

    I'm writing an application for storing lots of images (size <5MB) on an ext3 filesystem, this is what I have for now. After some searching here on serverfault I have decided for a structure of directories like this: 000/000/000000001.jpg ... 236/519/236519107.jpg This structure will allow me to save up to 1'000'000'000 images as I'll store a max of 1'000 images in each leaf. I've created it, from a theoretical point of view seems ok to me (though I've no experience on this), but I want to find out what will happen when there will be directories full of files in there. A question about creating this structure: is it better to create it all in one go (takes approx 50 minutes on my pc) or should I create directories as they are needed? From a developer point of view I think the first option is better (no extra waiting time for the user), but from a sysadmin point of view, is this ok? I've thought I could do as if the filesystem is already under the running application, I'll make a script that will save images as fast as it can, monitoring things as follows: how much time does it take for an image to be saved when there is no or little space used? how does this change when the space starts to be used up? how much time does it take for an image to be read from a random leaf? Does this change a lot when there are lots of files? Does launching this command sync; echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches has any sense at all? Is this the only thing I have to do to have a clean start if I want to start over again with my tests? Do you have any suggestions or corrections?

I have a little home server set up, for internet sharing, samba, basic http, dlna mediaserver and what not, and I happend to have a domain at hand, so I thought why not direct it to this computer? I have a BIND 9.8.0 installed, and - afaik - configured it properly. For a few days, the public view did not worked, and I really did not cared, since the local view worked. But now suddenly, even the local view fails.   • Multi monitor setup with a tv as well?

    I have always had a dual monitor setup for my pc's for years now. I am now in the market to build a new PC and get some new stuff. I need some help or advice on how to run 3 monitors WITH a 4th display which will be a lcd/plasma tv. So I am thinking I can get 2 video cards and that will give me all the hookups to run 3 monitors instead of 2. I will mount all 3 monitors in a row side by side and above them on the wall I would like to mount a larger 30-40+ inch lcd or plasma tv. I would then like to hook up my atelite/cable to this tv just as I would normally hook up a tv but I would like to also be able to have an option to view my PC o this tv as well. I know that is possible but would it be possible to view my PC on that tv and also still view my 3 other monitors and have the TV be a 4th display, where I could dock a different app/window in windows in all 4 displays (3 monitors + tv) ?? Please tell me any tips/advice on how to do this including what cables/software if any/converters/ you name it. Thanks for any help

  • Unable to connect to second name of Windows 2008 Server R2 machine from XP

    I used the command netdom computername /add:newname.domainname.com to add a second name to a server running Windows 2008 Server R2. After restarting the server, I had DNS "A" entries for both names. In addition, the second name was added to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\Parameters\OptionalNames, which I believe should have taken care of any NetBIOS resolution. From my Windows 7 workstation, I can ping both names and running net view on both names reveals the same list of resources. From Windows XP, I can ping both names, but net view only works on the first name. Running net view on the second name returns: System error 52 has occurred. You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. Go to System in Control Panel to change the computer name and try again. What do I need to do to make the second name usable from XP clients? Update: I was able to resolve the problem by adding the REG_DWORD key DisableStrictNameChecking = 1 to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\Parameters, then restarting the Server service. However, I do not understand why this was necessary.
