• Linux binary built for 2.0 kernel wouldn't execute on 2.6.x kernel.

  I was installing a binary Linux application on Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64. The app shipped with an old version of gzip (1.2.4), that was compiled for a much older kernel: $ file gzip gzip: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.0.0, stripped I wasn't able to execute this program. If I tried, this happened: $ ./gzip -bash: ./gzip: No such file or directory ldd was similarly unhappy with this binary: $ ldd gzip not a dynamic executable This isn't a showstopper for me, since my installation has a working version of gzip I can use. But I'm curious: What's the most likely source of this problem? A corrupted file? Or a binary incompatibility due to being built for a much older {kernel,libc,...}?

• What information do you capture when your software crashes in the field?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those.   Here is the drill, I want to version a database. I have done this before using multiple rows where the table primary key becomes a combination of the row id and either a datestamp or a version #. Now I want to version a table that depends on many other small tables. Versioning each table will be a giant PITA, so I am looking for good options to verion a schema where the data to be versioned spreads over multiple tables. All related tables are properly keyed with foreign key relationships. The database is currently on Sql Server 2005.

  Given I have data like the following, how can I select and group by portions of a string? • Ensuring Updated CSS/JavaScript on Client Side

  I'm trying to ensure that visitors of my ASP.NET MVC website always have the most-current CSS and Javascript (and not some older cached version). I tried to realize this by generating a seed value when the application domain starts, and automatically append it to the CSS and Javascript URLs (so now instead of /Content/All.js the link is /Content/All.js?549238 etc.). Unfortunately I just found out by debugging via Firebug that this causes now a full download request every time (the new "seeded" response is no longer cached at all, but I only wanted the first check to download the 'updated' version, but then cache again/only check if there is a difference). How can I achieve my goal, is there a better way of doing this? I need the client to always request the newest version, but then cache if no change happened. Edit: This appears to be related to the fact that my page is served over SSL. I asked a follow up question here regarding enabling clientside caching with SSL.

• WAMP - phpMyAdmin is loading a blank browser (Firefox)

  I recently uninstalled an older version of WAMP then installed the latest version. The link to the localhost displays the WAMPSERVER home page successfully. However, the http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ returns only a blank browser - it displays nothing. localhost/sqlitemanager/ returns a Forbidden You don't have permission to access /sqlitemanager/ on this server. This seems to be a 403 forbidden error I've looked everywhere for an answer to this. Help please

• How can I rename by CarrierWave file versions?

  Upon the uploading of an image in my application, 4 different sizes are created and saved using CarrierWaves version functionality. However, I am converting all of these versions to JPEG. The source file that is uploaded remains unchanged. So I can upload a TIFF file, and CarrierWave will create :large, :medium, :small, and :thumb versions. My problem is that these files all still end in .tif. Yet they are indeed JPEG files, as I've verified this with the file command. How can I write the filenames correctly for each version, and ensure that CarrierWave will report each version's name correctly?

• GNU Emacs is crashing with -nw

  When I run emacs with -nw option, the emacs really open, but I can't do more nothing. As if the user input is blocked and no keyboard signal is received and/or interpreted. I've tried run without load .emacs file and some other behaviors: emacs -nw -Q --no-desktop --debug-ini foo.c But makes no difference and strangely the GUI-version(using Gtk) is working fine. My gnu-emacs version is GNU Emacs 23.3.1 Any help to help to fix it is very appreciated.

• How to Get SharePoint PowerShell to use .NET 2

  I'm having a couple of problems with PowerShell. First, the PS configuration installed by SharePoint 2010 keeps popping this message: The local farm is not accessible. Cmdlets with FeatureDependencyId are not registered. I've googled that, and given everybody and their second cousin Sharepoint_Shell_Access to the config DB, with no luck. So, I wanted to try some of the PS commands. In this case, however, I'm getting a different error: Microsoft SharePoint is not supported with version 4.0.30319.17929 of the Microsoft .Net Runtime. I get that SP can't use .NET 4.0 or 4.5, but I can't find any suggestions on how to get PS to use the "right" version of .NET. I've found some references for something called PowerGUI, and changing the psgui.exe.config, but I don't have that. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to solve the .NET version problem? • Google App Engine dev_appserver can't find PIL (I've installed it)

  I recently upgraded my Google App Engine launcher on my Mac, running OSX 10.5.8, and afterwards my projects that work with images stopped working locally. It seems to be the same problem that I had when first using GAE locally to work with images, before I installed PIL. Here is the error I get: SystemError: Parent module 'PIL' not loaded I have PIL installed. When I run python normally, I can access it and work with it as expected. I also checked to ensure that dev_appserver.py was running the same version of Python. If I open the interpreter and type sys.version I get this back: 2.5 (r25:51918, Sep 19 2006, 08:49:13) [GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5341)] This is identical to what I get when I display the sys.version from my projects running through dev_appserver. Any thoughts on why dev_appserver can't find the PIL module? I have been banging my head against this for a bit. Thank you!

  Hi all, I am using Visual Studio 2008 and CR XI R2 for a web application built in silverlight. currently I am having a problem with showing a dynamic image on a crystal report. I was told that the reference file added in the project might be old version, so I replaced the reference files to be 11.5x version from 10.5x version. I removed all 10.5x dlls and then added 11.5x dlls, but I see 10.5x dlls are added instead. does anybody how to fix this problem? Please help. Thanks,
