  • Online remount btrfs of root filesystem with different subvolume (snapshot) [migrated]

    - by goncalopp
Let's say you have a btrfs root filesystem on an online system. You want to revert the filesystem to an earlier state, of which you have a snapshot: remount /dev/sdaX / -o remount,subvol=snapshots/Y For the record, I've done this in a test system, and it does not work. The command returns with no errors, but the subvolume mounted is the same. If this did work, what would be the consequences? My guess is that open file descriptors would still point to the old subvolume, thus possibly leading to "data loss" on the new subvolume, if one was not careful. Assuming one goes to the trouble of closing and reopening all open file descriptors, does this sound feasible? Or are there other types of problems?

  • cPanel Virtfs won't umount

    - by JPerkSter
    Anyone have any experience with virtfs on cPanel servers? I can't seem to get them to unmount, as they say they are already unmounted: [root@Server ~]# cat /proc/mounts | grep user /dev/root /home/virtfs/user/lib ext3 rw,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/root /home/virtfs/user/opt ext3 rw,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/lib ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/sbin ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/share ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/bin ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/man ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/X11R6 ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/kerberos ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/libexec ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/bin ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/share ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/Zend ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/IonCube ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/include ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda3 /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/lib ext3 rw,nodev,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda2 /home/virtfs/user/var/spool ext3 rw,nodev,noatime,nodiratime,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda2 /home/virtfs/user/var/lib ext3 rw,nodev,noatime,nodiratime,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda2 /home/virtfs/user/var/cpanel ext3 rw,nodev,noatime,nodiratime,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda2 /home/virtfs/user/var/run ext3 rw,nodev,noatime,nodiratime,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda2 /home/virtfs/user/var/log ext3 rw,nodev,noatime,nodiratime,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sda6 /home/virtfs/user/tmp ext3 rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/root /home/virtfs/user/bin ext3 rw,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0 [root@Server ~]# for i in cat /proc/mounts |grep virtfs |grep user |awk '{print$2}'; do umount $i; done umount: /home/virtfs/user/lib: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/opt: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/lib: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/sbin: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/share: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/bin: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/man: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/X11R6: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/kerberos: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/libexec: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/bin: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/share: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/Zend: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/IonCube: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/include: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/usr/local/lib: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/var/spool: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/var/lib: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/var/cpanel: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/var/run: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/var/log: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/tmp: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/bin: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/dev: not mounted umount: /home/virtfs/user/proc: not mounted

  • Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive: Accesing the data in the disk?

    - by JJarava
Hi all! I have an Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive, 1TB, and lately I can't access the data on the drive. The shares (both built-in and created by me) are there, the security works, but when trying to access the data I get a "The network path was not found" message which is worrying, to say the least. I'd like to know if there is a way to get the data off the disks somehow, as some of the data in the drive (ie, pictures and videos of my 1.5 yrs old son) is hard if not impossible to find otherwise. Thanks a lot Javier

  • How do I convert a Linux disk image into a sparse file?

    - by endolith
I have a bunch of disk images, made with ddrescue, on an EXT partition, and I want to reduce their size without losing data, while still being mountable. How can I fill the empty space in the image's filesystem with zeros, and then convert the file into a sparse file so this empty space is not actually stored on disk? For example: > du -s --si --apparent-size Jimage.image 120G Jimage.image > du -s --si Jimage.image 121G Jimage.image This actually only has 50G of real data on it, though, so the second measurement should be much smaller. This supposedly will fill empty space with zeros: cat /dev/zero > zero.file rm zero.file But if sparse files are handled transparently, it might actually create a sparse file without writing anything to the virtual disk, ironically preventing me from turning the virtual disk image into a sparse file itself. :) Does it? Note: For some reason, sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=./zero.file works when cat does not on a mounted disk image.

  • VMware Workstation executes nonexisting and outdated File

    - by RED SOFT ADAIR-StefanWoe
I execute a command line program from a VM (VMware 7.1.1) with Windows XP. The executable file is located on the host machine. If i start a command line in the VM, using a drive mounted as .host\SharedFolders i see the following: D:\projects\myProgram\WinRel>dir myProgram.exe 02.09.2010 21:15 245.760 myProgram.exe D:\projects\myProgram\WinRel>myProgram.exe Processing BuildFeb 26 2009 This is wrong! The whole execution of the program behaves like the version that is outdated more than one year! I triple checked that there is no confusion or anything If i start the Program on the host or if i even start it from the VM using a UNC Path, it shows the last build date and executes as expected: C:\>dir \\myMachine\drive_d\projects\myProgram\WinRel\myProgram.exe 02.09.2010 21:15 245.760 myProgram.exe C:\>\\myMachine\drive_d\projects\myProgram\WinRel\myProgram.exe Processing Build: Sep 2 2010 Can this behavior somehow be explained? There MUST be a cache for the host mounted drive. The program it executes does not exist anymore! If i remove it from the host, the VM can not execute it anymore. If i restore it, the behavior becomes the same again.

  • EBS full device confusion

I have a 500GB EBS device (/dev/xvdf) mounted to /vol and all data on the box seems to be writing to /vol correctly (see du output below). For some reason /dev/xvda1 is totally full. • How can ShadowProtect SBS backup to alternating external drives?

    - by detly
I am trying to configure ShadowProtect SBS (v. 4.1.5.10129) in Windows Server 2003 SBS to backup my server hard drives to two alternating external drives. What I want is to be able to swap one drive for another every Friday, and have ShadowProtect continue on the same schedule. Ideally, this would require absolutely no user interaction whatsoever, apart from physically unplugging one drive and reconnecting the other. The trouble is, Windows Server 2003 does not allow you to assign the same drive letter to two different devices. So if I plug in drive #1 and assign it drive letter "X:", the next week when I unplug it and plug in drive #2, it gets some other letter. But since ShadowProtect is set to backup to "X:\", it can't find it and the backup fails. The drives are Samsung STORY Station 3.0 2TB drives. How can I configure things so I can just swap the drives over every week and not worry about having to reconfigure drive letters every time?

  • How to edit files directly on webdav in windows.

    - by phazei
I have a webDAV setup with the cPanel webdisk. I can connect to it through NetHood and I can drag and drop files to/from there. What I can't do is simply edit any of the files directly. I need to copy it somewhere else, edit it, then copy it back. That's essentially what is needed with ftp, though smart clients will monitor the file, making it easier than webDAV in the current state I'm using it in. I was under the impression that webdav was supposed to let me work on the files as if it were a local drive. But nothing can actually open the files. How can I go about bringing more functionality around to it? Or is this as good as it gets? I have tried 'net use q:\ https://myserver.com:2078' and 'net use q:\ '\myserver.com@SSL:2078\' but neither work and only throws: "System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found." I ultimately want to use TortiseSVN with the webDAV so I can have my working copy running on the server.

  • pendrive automount not working

    - by Delirium tremens
There are lots of ways to disable pendrive automount. I used one, but regreted, forgot which one and now need to reenable pendrive automount. It may have been a changed setting after pressing a button while booting Ubuntu or a deleted folder named something20090101 or 01012009something or whatever as long as it's a word and a date... If I don't want pendrive viruses, it's disable autorun, but keep automount enabled, right? blush

  • How can I adapt a Dell 2001FP stand for use on newer Dell monitors?

    - by user26453
I find myself really disappointed with how little vertical adjustment newer Dell LCD's have. I retiring a malfunctioning Dell 2001FP. The stand on the 2001FP allows over 6 inches of vertical adjustment. Compare this to my newer monitors, a 2005FP and a SW22209, both of which allow at most 2 inches of vertical adjustment. So while the Dell 2001FP monitor is shot, the stand is not. Is there anyway to fit the stand onto the SW2209 or the 2005FP? The 2001FP stand seems to have an odd plate with three tabs on the top edge. Can I replace this?

  • Mounted HDD not having enough permissions from Apache/PHP

    - by Dan
Piwigo gallery, on apache and php. The root system is a RAID 128GB. /var/www/html is on the root file system. Mounted the 320GB hdd to /var/www/html/320 using defaults, it's an ext4 fs. Put a symlink to it in /var/www/html/galleries which is read by the gallery script so I can upload images to there, then click sync. It gives me the error: [./galleries/] PWG-ERROR-NO-FS (File/directory read error) PWG-ERROR-NO-FS: The file or directory cannot be accessed (either it does not exist or the access is denied) chmod 777 set on /dev/sdb1, /var/www/html, and /var/www/html/320 as well as the symlink galleries too. All recursive. chown apache:apache to everything too. PHP just can't read/write to it. I tried with and without the symlink, I've tried everything I can think of. Nothing. Any ideas how I can give apache/php permission to read/write to this drive? With 777 permissions all around it should already be able to.

  • QNAP NAS 509 (LINUX) - how to unmout busy volume and find physical disk?

    - by Horst Walter
On my NAS QNAP TS 509 I do have a technical issue. I need to run e2fsck. This works fine for me on md0 (see below), but how can I unmount the busy devices md9 and sda4 in order to do the same. Whenever I try, I fail because the device is busy. [This part is solved, see below] In order to further track down the issue, I'd need to sort out the physical disk to device relationship. How can I find out this, e.g. md0 is a stripped volume on 2 disk (but I need to find out on what physical disk). Remark: As you can easily derive from my questions, I am not a Linux expert, but manage to get along. /dev/ram0 124.0M 94.1M 29.8M 76% / tmpfs 32.0M 80.0k 31.9M 0% /tmp /dev/sda4 310.0M 103.9M 206.1M 34% /mnt/ext /dev/md9 509.5M 39.2M 470.2M 8% /mnt/HDA_ROOT /dev/md0 1.8T 1.4T 444.7G 76% /share/MD0_DATA tmpfs 32.0M 0 32.0M 0% /.eaccelerator.tmp -- Added -- QNAP seems to be based on Busybox. I do not find something like init / telinit / runlevel. At busybox docs it says that I need to run the below. But in /var/service sv is not available. I want to go to single user mode to unmount the devices. # cd /var/service # sv d * # sv u getty* -- Added, thanks A4L -- This QNAP Box runs a special flavor of Linux, so not all SOPs do apply. In my particular case I found a services.sh script, stopping all services. After that the drive could be unmounted. The information passed by A4L is valid and worth reading it, maybe I'll profit from it next time. Links: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/19918/umount-device-is-busy and http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/15024/umount-device-is-busy-why So the unmount issue is solved, still looking for the best option to find the physical to volume mapping.

  • DMG mounting warning message says "it may make computer less secure or cause other problems"

    - by Cawas
When I try to open a DMG file I get this: I'll just transcript the image: There may be a problem with this disk image. Are you sure you want to open it? Opening this disk image may make your computer less secure or cause other problems. What does that mean in fact? What's really wrong with it, and what kind of problem can it cause just by mounting? Someone said: When you download a file in Leopard (and Snow Leopard), it's marked as a quarantined file. This occurs by the OS adding an attribute to the file, tagging where it came from (such as "downloaded by Safari"). This is what causes the user to see prompts when running files that were downloaded from the Internet, you may remember being asked to confirm you'd like to launch program XXX downloaded by Safari on XXX date. As a new part of Snow Leopard, files which are tagged with the quarantine attribute also have integrity checked by fsck, and if that verify fails you will see the message you described, triggered by an unused node in the disc image. But really, I didn't get that. What's quarantine? I've just downloaded a file here on SL, tried to open, and got that warning. Apple have a say about quarantine files, and they seem to work the same on Leopards. Plus I have got that file using Google Chrome while that feature seems to work just with Safari.

  • Run script when a specific disk/memory card is mounted under OSX

    - by Max Rydahl Andersen
How do I run a script when a drive is mounted under OSX ? My usecase is that I would like to automatically copy images from my USB memory/harddrive when it is inserted in my USB card reader, and when a DVD or CD is inserted I would like to copy it for storage in my media center. I've tried using Marcopolo but from what I can see it can only detect the presence of a certain USB device, not the presence of specific harddrive. • Loading and unloading ISO files in Windows 8

    - by Mohd. Ismail
I saw on one site that the new Windows 8 could load ISO images without the help of other programs. Is Windows 8 creating a new drive for every ISO? Or does it have one fake drive to load all ISOS in? How can I know if a file is really an ISO inside? Some PCs use UltraISO to open ISOs. If I just enter the ISO name in DOS, it is loading in UltraISO. How can I load the ISO only in Windows 8 on all PCs, whether they have UltraISO or not? How can I unload ISOs?

  • Force Finder to log in as Guest to a SMB share

    - by slhck
I have a QNAP NAS that offers a few SMB shares. As I'm in a trusted environment, my shares are accessible as guest rather than with a combination of username and password. Problem Now, when I click the name of the device in Finder's sidebar, I get the black "Connection failed" bar, with the option "Connect as...". When I click that, I receive: I can however press ? + K and enter the server's name manually, which gets me to this window: Here, I have to select "guest". Now, I can select one of the shares to connect to, and I'm finally connected to the server. If I select it in the sidebar, I get a list of all shares available, because I'm connected as "guest", obviously: What I need Well, as soon as I unmount all shares, I have to go through the same procedure of manually logging in as "guest" again, which I find quite annoying. Is there any way I could get Finder (or the underlying SMB client) to know which credentials to use? Or should I look for the solution rather on the server side? • Can't delete a directory on external drive (OS X)

    - by Martin Tóth
I have a brand new Transcend StoreJet 25M3 (external HDD) mounted to MacBook (Leopard 10.5.8) at /Volumes/Transcend. I copied some data from my old Windows (XP) machine on it, and now, after cleaning some stuff up, I wanted to delete some directories, but this is what happened: $ rmdir My\ Pictures/ rmdir: My Pictures/: Operation not permitted Using Finder just asks for password, but does not delete the directory (sound of "moved to Trash" is played). I thought it's some permission "thing", but: $ ls -l drwxrwxrwx 1 martin staff 32768 5 jan 16:11 My Pictures/ $ sudo rm -rf My\ Pictures rm: My Pictures: Operation not permitted I re-mounted, rebooted (thinking that there's some file lock), but that did not help. What might have happened here? How to delete it?
